Dillain is a physics teacher at a university, he has a good amount of competency with this. He is very likable, and gets along with everyone, he teaches in an encouraging and inspiring way. He has a wife who he loves dearly and is pregnant with his daughter. In an instant his life is flipped as tragically, both his daughter and wife die due to complications at birth. At this point he is at his least active in the story as he is being pushed and pulled around and realises he has no control over anything. He is left with nothing and feels cheated.

Because of his great likability, we feel compelled to empathize with him and we struggle with the injustice that he has gone through. He may attempt to commit suicide as he feels he has nothing left to care about, at this point he is ultimately trying to find anything to hold onto in his life. His competency as a teacher can't help him with his internal conflicts, being mental health and deep sorrow from the loss of his family, and an external conflict of possibly losing his job due to being deemed mentally unstable. Everything he loves has been ripped from him and he is not coping at all.

In a thunderstorm he sees a little homeless girl who he continues to protect and care for. As time goes by and the story progresses he begins to love this girl as if she were his own daughter and he is eventually at a point of happiness and a bond has developed him and the girl who he felt sorry for, she trusts him and loves him now as a father.
