Basil Sour

Basil Sour - student project

I started with gin because it's refreshing and complex. With that in mind I looked throughout the house for inspiration. I decided to make an infused simple syrup but otherwise stay with a simple 3 ingredient concoction.

THE BASIL SOUR

INGREDIENTS

2 oz Gin

3/4 oz Lemon Juice

1/2 oz Basil-Lemon Simple Syrup

(Mix 1c sugar with 1 cup water in a medium saucepan over low heat. Add 5-7 fresh basil leaves
(chopped) and the zest of 1/2 Lemon. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Let sit for 30 minutes and then strain.
Let the syrup cool before using.)

Cucumber slices and basil leaf for Garnish

DIRECTIONS

Put all ingredients into a shaker and add ice.

Shake until very cold (15-20 seconds)

Strain into chilled coup or rocks glass.

Garnish with cucumber slice and basil leaf.

THOUGHTS

I really like the way this drink came out. I was worried about making the basil component sweet but it works great. Plus the fragrance is incredible. This would work great as a pre-dinner drink because the savory elements increases my appetite. I may try it with some club soda to lighten it up a bit and maybe a pinch of salt.

Happy concocting.
