Sam slumped on the couch dropping his backpack on the floor. His eyes barely stayed open as he stared at the ceiling feeling the night shift draining all of his energy.

He had driven a battered Honda Civic handed down by his aunt to his older brother who had used it as a live-in condo until he got a job that offered housing quarters.

The last time he had seen Grandma was on a beach vacation when he was five. But in the last twenty years, the only time he saw her was at birthday dinners or evening parties. Whenever he visited during the day, her caregiver would tell him she was sleeping and to return after sunset when she'd be bright and cheerful.

In a room littered with crumpled paper that he used to play wastebasket ball, week-old pizza boxes, and clothes dripping with sweat and grease from his restaurant job, he couldn't even find his girlfriend’s cat, Mr. Bigsby amidst all of his mess.

Usually a deserted alleyway only used by the ones like him brave enough to navigate the catcalling while clutching his keys like weapons, today it teemed with people yelling at each other while guards tried to break the argument with words instead of weapons.
