Repeated Sunset Practice

Repeated Sunset Practice - student project

I came to this class after finishing Brent Eviston’s Drawing Laboratory course, but before I planned to take some landscape drawing classes - I was really looking for some repeatable practice that will help me with my watercolour paintings.

My key takeaways for this class were
- start small - it was usually easier to do a larger sunset if I had studied some of the elements in isolation
- repeat - ever since Brent made me draw 1000 circles, I’ve been a big believer in repetition, and repeating sunsets helped me work out of of the strokes of combinations that were more or less compelling
- technique - I’ve gotten a copy of Mastering Atmosphere and Mood in Watercolor and am doing my best to apply the Watercolour Clock to my work, with some success

The pictures I chose to share were some of the more successful ones.

After a few days of obsessively painting sunsets, my plan is to cycle through some other watercolour classes that cover finer line work and wet-into-wet techniques and then come back to sunsets and try to apply some of what I’ve learned. I love watercolour for its looseness and unpredictability, and I’ll practice embracing those qualities, so that I can combine watercolour with other, more precise art forms.
