Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come

Hey there,

here's my project for Tom's Slo-Fi class. First of all, thank you Tom for another awesome class! It was a pleasure trying something new! As always, I had a lot of fun!

Here's the final image:

So, after Tom chose a Jazz record, I immediately thought about one of my favorite records of all time: The Shape of Punk to Come by Refused. It's very jazzy, experimental and still sounds fresh although the album is 27 years old now.

Here's the original cover:

What I really like is the dancing couple from the 50s or 60s at the bottom. I wanted to draw something with this 50s/60s Rock'n'Roll vibe. I searched for reference pictures of dancing people from that specific period and drew the sketches:

Although I liked the picture of a woman holding the man, which is unusual, I ended up with the the third sketch which only shows the woman in full and only parts of the man. It felt more dynamic and more energetic.

The next step was a more detailed sketch:

I also wanted to include some more elements from the original cover. So I filled the empty space with the geometrical shapes. This also lead to my color choice with the colors from the original cover. Due to a lack of nice colored markers, I drew a colored sketch with colored pencils:

My first idea was to write the album title into the big letters of the band's name but this looked very restless. I ended up writing the title into the shapes at the bottom and getting rid of the record label logos. Here's the final sketch:

From this, I drew the color separations using a black pen and brush pen:

And finally, I put everything together in Photoshop:

To make it look even more like a nice old vinyl cover, I added a paper texture:

Thanks for looking and reading! And thank you Tom! See you in your next class!

Cheers
Henry
