Watercolor Portraits: Techniques for Creating Light, Depth & Emotion

Over the past year, I’ve really fallen in love with painting portraits. There’s something enticingly challenging and rewarding about trying to capture not just how someone looks, but how they feel through watercolour. It’s become one of my favourite subjects to teach, and I’ve been genuinely touched by how warmly you’ve received my portrait classes so far.

One of the things I enjoy most is seeing all the beautiful interpretations from students, each painting with its own unique style and personal touches. It reminds me just how expressive and individual watercolour can be.

If you haven't already taken this class, it’s about finding the beauty in looseness, simplicity, and emotion. I’ve designed it to help you paint portraits that feel soft, luminous, and full of life, even if you’ve never tackled faces before.

In this class, we explore:

  • Building skin tones with soft glazes and gentle transitions

  • Painting expressive features without overworking them

  • Using loose brushwork and wet-on-wet effects for atmosphere and depth

  • Finding the balance between structure and flow in your portrait work

More than anything, this class is meant to feel fun, freeing, and inspiring. There’s no pressure to get everything “right”, instead, I encourage you to paint with curiosity, listen to the advice and insights I share throughout, and allow yourself to experiment. The techniques and ideas I go through in this class are the kind of things that can quietly but powerfully transform how you approach watercolour, even beyond portraits.

Thanks for being here and for continuing to explore watercolour with me. I’m truly grateful to be part of your creative journey!

Warmly,
Will
