Pique Assiette Style

Pique Assiette is the French term for Mosaic. Literally "broken plate". :-) The project was very well presented. It was really smart to have us do 4 small test projects and then follow up with a final. I was a wee bit discouraged by my first 4. Two of them I ruined tearing the paper when I removed the tape. I also realized I don't have any good markers and I found it hard doing mark-making on the small projects with acrylic paint.

I decided to do a larger piece as a final as shown in the tutorial and used my initial frustrations as information to inform my approach. I leaned into what I do have rather than what I don't. I don't have markers, but at the larger size, it was easier to paint marks, plus I used a "color shaper" rubber tipped stylus to draw into the wet paint. I also tried to both push myself but remain closer to my own style. The 2nd project I used the tape to mimic and play off the organic blocky style of the painting.

I used Schmincke Gold Powder Bronze - the oil based version. Paints were Ara Artists Acrylic. Derwent Inktense Blocks and a Color Shaper rubber-tipped "brush".

In the 2 I ruined, I found that it's a mistake to try to tape off too much. You miss the intent of the style and it seemed to make more problems for the tape.

Pleased with the final project.

Final project with 2 of my surviving 1st tries. I might go back into the smaller ones to put mark making when I get some markers.
