Building a Learning Path Toward DaVinci Resolve Mastery

For my class project, I created a structured prompt asking ChatGPT to act as an experienced DaVinci Resolve mentor.

My goal was to use the six-block prompt formula of persona, context, task, format, examples, and tone, to create a personalized learning path that could take me from having little experience with DaVinci Resolve to becoming a confident and capable video editor.

I included information about my current experience level, what I want to learn, how I wanted the answer organized, and the type of teaching style that would be most helpful to me.

"Act as a professional DaVinci Resolve editor and patient mentor who has experience teaching complete beginners.

I am new to DaVinci Resolve and have limited video-editing experience. I want to learn the program properly rather than jumping randomly between tutorials. My long-term goal is to become confident enough to edit YouTube videos, short-form content, gaming videos, and more advanced creative projects.

Create a complete learning path that takes me from beginner to advanced DaVinci Resolve user. Explain what I should learn first, what order I should learn the different tools in, and what skills I should practise before moving on.

Organize the learning path into the following stages:

  1. Getting comfortable with the interface
  2. Importing and organizing media
  3. Basic editing
  4. Audio editing
  5. Transitions, titles, and effects
  6. Colour correction and colour grading
  7. Fusion and motion graphics
  8. Exporting and delivering videos
  9. Intermediate and advanced editing techniques
  10. Building a portfolio

For each stage, include:

  • The skills I should learn
  • Why those skills matter
  • A small practice project
  • Common beginner mistakes
  • How I will know when I am ready to move forward

Use recommendations in this style:

Basic Editing — Practice Project: Import several short video clips, arrange them into a 30-second sequence, trim unnecessary footage, add music, and export the finished video.

Use a patient, encouraging, and practical tone. Explain technical terms when they first appear and do not assume I already understand editing terminology. Avoid overwhelming me with too many advanced features at once."
