42% of law students feel ready for real-world practice
Here's what they're doing right
Dear Friend,
If you're like me, then you probably stress occasionally about your future as a lawyer. The legal profession is daunting. It's hard from the start, and it only gets harder.
It makes you worry about your future, doesn't it? Well, you're not alone. In fact, 58% of law students feel unprepared for the reality of legal practice.
And while it's comforting to know you aren't alone, it's unsettling to think that the remaining 42% are, by implication, better prepared than you are, considering the competitive nature of the profession.
What Are These 42% Doing Right?
While it might be fallacious to make overly generalized claims, it would be prudent to consider two individuals I know personally.
Bright and Ben were both brilliant students in secondary school and later attended the same university as law students.
Ben was an introverted bookworm, focused solely on lectures, textbooks, tests, exams, and assignments.
Bright, on the other hand, was outgoing. He visited law firms, skipped lectures to attend court trials, interrogated seniors, lecturers, professors, lawyers, and learned more than he saw in school.
In the end, they were both great lawyers, but one was better prepared for reality, and thus more successful.
Exposure is Key
While it's not advisable to adopt Bright’s rogue lifestyle, you shouldn't be as closed-up as Ben either.
The legal profession is broad, deep, and intricate. It takes time—a lot of it—to learn and adapt to it. And when the time comes for actual practice, it will be even more difficult to adapt.
You'll be clumsy and confused. You'll have to make mistakes and learn. How long until you stop losing cases? How long until you've lost all your clients? How long until you've failed enough? How long until you start losing value?
You need to start now to get exposed to the realities of the law and legal profession. But not Bright’s way… especially if you're an introvert like Ben.
Too risky.
