Yuki Hemmi – Dyeing and Creating Artworks with the Theme “LUCENT LIFE”

I mainly dye silk and create patterns, then design and sew garments, stoles, and other items using traditional Japanese dyeing techniques such as Yuzen-zome, Roketsu-zome, and my own original methods.

I hope my art brings light to those who experience it, to their loved ones, and to the world.

I also have experience as a wedding videographer, filming in beautiful hotels and gardens, and collaborating with many editors.

This tour was inspired by my cinematic techniques and storytelling approach from bridal videography.

1. Intro ∞ Let's Embark on our Journey!: When we create artworks how does our imagination come to life? Let's embark on our journey to bleach, wash, cut, shape and dry dried flowers. Amazing! The color has changed. This class is for everyone at all levels. While bleaching flowers traveling through time and space around the solar system feeling the reincarnation living on the Earth we create a White Dried Flower Universe. I create artworks on the theme of LUCENT LIFE with my Japanese traditional Kimono dyeing techniques. Also, I have experience as a bridal videographer. This film was made using only iPhones. So, I harmonized my dyeing and filming skills to play a beautiful white space cinematic story. What kind of art do you love? You are alright to express your universe freely in the way you love. 2. Earth ○ Departure to Space: Traveling to White Dried Flower Universe Filming, Editing, Recording, iPhone SE3 Our Mission Creating a Universe with Bleached Planetary Plants It's 3 o'clock now. I'm back it's time to prepare for our mission. I change into my space suit. Let's begin our journey! - Earth - Departure to Space Nice to meet you. I'm Yuki, a tour guide for this space travel. Thank you for joining our tour. On this tour, we will look for dried flowers bleach the flowers turn them white and finally create a beautiful White Dried Flower Universe. We will visit Mercury, Venus, Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Are you now looking forward to traveling the solar system and creating a new white universe. If you have the curiosity to explore space anyone is welcome to join! I hope you enjoy our tour from now on. Before we leave for a space we prepare the necessary belongings. PACKING CHECKLIST Dried Plants We can find many types of dried plants in different colors. Also, dried flowers grew in nature. Kitchen Bleach Lidded Container Tweezers Tweezers with pointed tips are useful for picking up small dried plants. Scissors Small size scissors are easier to cut flowers. Bowl Actually, a plastic bowl is more suitable for bleaching. Shifter Wet Wipes Paper Towel Plastic Wrap We are all set for our space travel. Let's board our white spaceship! We are now taking off and departing. It's time to travel through the White Dried Flower Universe. 3. Mercury ○ Bleaching Flowers: We are flying through space now. - Mercury - Bleaching Flowers Our first mission on our first destination Mercury is to bleach dried flowers. I corrected these dried hydrangeas on Mercury. Many mysterious plants grow here that are not found on Earth. Just kidding! I bought them at a nearby shopping mall. But don't worry there are plenty of beautiful flowers on Earth too! You can go looking for them outdoors or find your favorite dried plants in online shops or nearby stores. As you can see, these hydrangeas are a bit creamy in color. So, I'm going to bleach them for a perfect white. And these are natural dried flowers I found outside. Actually, I don't know what kind of plants they are. I'm going to bleach them too. This is an ordinary household kitchen bleach for dishes. Please read the instructions before use. If you have rubber gloves I suggest to you wear them for your safety. I wasn't wearing rubber gloves because I needed to touch my iPhone for this video shoot. At this time I put bleach in the jar until the entire flowers were soaked. I add two or three times the amount of water as the amount of bleach. Let's see! It looks like a little universe. It's better to cover the bleach with the lid to prevent the chlorine from evaporating. If there is no lid plastic wrap can be placed over a jar. Let's wait a few hours. The ratio of the amount of bleach to the amount of the water depends on the type and color of the dried plants. For strong colored dried plants we can increase the amount of breach and soaking hours. I'm happy, you're joining our special tour. Have a nice tea time while we wait. We are now departing Mercury to move on to our next planet. 4. Venus ○ Whiteness Survey: We are now heading to the brilliant yellow planet! - Venus - Whiteness Survey It's night outside. 7:00 p.m. now. Three and a half hours passed. Those hydrangeas look so white and beautiful. It's like a magic of withered flowers revived with freshness. Let's proceed with our whiteness survey. When you bleach, please use a plastic container. Actually, the instructions say not to use metal for bleach because it'll tarnish it. I use the small jar this time because a plastic container is opaque and I can not show the flowers inside well to you. Also, I use my stainless steel shifter and bowl. But these are for creation, not for the kitchen use. I don't think they'll rust if I just pour a low concentration bleach for a short time. But plastic container might be a good choice. Let's put water in the bowl! Babbles are dancing. And place the shifter in a bowl filled with water. Then open the lid of the jar and put the dried flowers soaked in bleach. By using tweezers to hold the dried flowers very little bleach goes in the bowl. So, it helps to keep my metalware in good condition. We can use the tweezers to make to dried flowers swim in the water gently. I cut a piece of plastic wrap and lay it on the sink. On top of that plastic wrap two layers of paper towels are placed. 1, 2, 3. I'm going to pour out the bleach washed water. And fill the bowl with fresh water. At this point, pour water between the sifter and the bowl. This will keep the fragile flowers from losing their shape by the water flow. When thoroughly washed pour off the water again. I place the sifter on the prepared kitchen papers then pick up the flowers and place them too. The hours of whitening depends on the type of flower. So, it's good to check from time to time. The haze grass is delicate and has collapsed. I should have taken it out more beforehand or not washed it much. But with a shifter, not swept away. The hydrangea seemed to have turned white but there is still cream color on the petals. So, I put them back again and soak them in bleach for a few hours. The brown dried plants I found outside are also turning white. I put them back in the jar too. Containers can also be separated according to the type of plant. If you bleach multiple types of flowers in one container you can take each flower out when it turns white. We can also dry the flowers on the shifter. Leaves are gradually and slowly changing color, naturally. Our mission on Venus is complete! On to the next planet! Look! Delicious looking yellow fruits are out there. Oh shoot! We should have picked them before we flew away! 5. Moon ○ Botanical Exploration: Left Venus and came to the moon. We are landing on the moon. - Moon - Botanical Exploration 10:30 at night. It's been three and a half hours. Dried hydrangea turned perfectly white like moonlight. I pick up the tiny haze grass flowers that have been drying on the shifter. So tiny. It is as if I'm collecting white stars from the silvery universe one by one. Let's rotate the galactic lid. Watery flowers appear really white. Now the time has come for flowers. As before place the shifter in the bowl with water inside. The dried flowers were soaked in bleach for about 7 hours in all. I put the flowers in the water. There is still a little brown on the stem. But I want to use the flower part so it's okay for me. Petals are beautifully translucent white. I pour off the bleach rinse water. And fill water between the bowl and the sifter. Pour off the water and shake the shifter to drain. I'm glad dried plants are now clean and purified. It's mysterious dead plants that have ended their lives seem to have come back to life anew. We are now in a universe of white flowers. Now let's explore other plants found on the moon. Well, would you say? I bought it at the nearby shopping mall again? Hmm. Please be quiet! Imagination makes our world deeper and wider. You know... Will the violet flowers found in the lunar crater turn white? I cut it short so that it will fit in the small jar. This star-shaped petal plant is already white but I try it too. Shooting stars are flying. We put the cut plants in bleach infused water. If you want, you can replace the bleach infused water especially if you are bleaching strong colored flowers. I didn't replace it at this time. Or depending on the type of plant a longer soak for a few days would make plants whiter. Cover and let the little universe mature. Moonlight reflected on the bottom of the grass jar Illuminates the floating flowers. We did great! We missed out on eating on Venus. So we have some Moon oranges! What? You say, it looks like a supermarket orange? Umm, would you bleach yours? Then it'll be a mystical white orange! But you won't be able to eat yours. Let's eat Normally. We soak the dried flowers in bleach infused water overnight. So fresh and tasty! Let's depart for the next planet! 3, 2, 1, Go! The moon is getting further away Thank you. 6. Mars ○ Drying Plants: Look out! Meteor showers are streaming through space. - Mars - Drying Plants The hydrangeas we washed in the moon are flowing in silver circle. Here, we prepare to dry the flowers. I'm going to cut the hydrangea flowers using tweezers. Place the flower on a paper towel laid on a seat of plastic wrap. Press the flowers lightly with my fingertip. I cut flowers and stems to separate them. It's depending on your use you can dry the flowers as they are if you want to display them in a base as is. Light reflects off wet petals. If you want to use your flowers as little pieces of discrete it is better to shape now before they dry while they're still wet as it is easier to shape each flower. This is a brown withered flower I found outside. The color has changed to translucent. These flowers are also cut to remove the brown color that remains on the stems. Some flowers have already turned entirely white. If the stems are hard scissors can be used instead of tweezers. Like floating on white cosmic waves. The haze grass has mostly decomposed. So fragile. I'm picking up all the little flowers one by one. Then I press the flowers I collected outside with my fingers to flatten them. The reason why I am doing this is because I want to put these tiny flowers in thin resin and create small parts. It goes something like this. They are very thin only a few millimeters thick. So, I want the flowers to be fairly flat. Petal feathers soar through the universe. I am looking forward to creating a semi permanent transparent universe in resin. Turn the hydrangea flowers upside down and press them lightly with my fingers as well. This is my snowy smart phone ring made of hydrangea. Flowers can be placed face down to reduce petal flipping. This small process creates ease of use later on. And I shape the stems of the hydrangea by stroking them with my fingers. This is because the shape of the stem hardens as it dries. Lastly, place the sifter over the flowers I wanna flatten. I placed it over half the hydrangeas and the flowers I corrected outside. Maybe a book will flatten too much. Let's dry overnight. It's done. We can relax drink a cup of tea rest our body and mind well. Now, our white light spaceship is ready to fly out. Our mission on Mars is complete! Hold on. We are going to warp into space. 7. Jupiter ○ Flora & Methodology: Our white spaceship came to the next planet. We are landing. - Jupiter - Flora and Methodology Morning sun illuminates dried plants. Petals are now transparent white. Violet faded away. Let's see the flowers cut off and dried on Mars. The hydrangea flowers on which the shifter was placed are flattened. While those on which the shifter wasn't placed have a three-dimensional appearance. These look like this. And the flowers I found outside it looks a little clover. We can see the difference in color. Light cream color turned white. I compare them also on a white table cloth. The white flower appear to assimilate with the lace pattern of the table cloth. Now, let us wash the statice flowers we soaked in bleach at the moon. Fill the bowl with water and place the shifter open the lid of the jar. Petals appear to be whitened. Soak the statice flowers in that water. I think both the violet and write flowers belong to a species called Statice. Although, the names were not mentioned on the package when I bought them. Peaceful time flows washing flowers floating in water swimming slowly and calmly. Statice stars are streaming through the galaxy. Now, let's look at the flowers. Petals looked white but still has a yellowish tint. However this time, I will proceed with this because the petals can be resoaked in bleach or dyed after they have been separated. I find it very hard to pull the petals out with my fingers. So, I cut the petals with scissors. I suggest you try different ways to separate them for each flower. Petals are now like this. I separate the petals with my fingers as they dry the layered petals stick together and are hard to remove. I haven't tried many different kinds of flowers but when I bleached teazel flowers I soaked them in bleach for three days and I replaced the bleach twice. I think these are also statice flowers. They were originally white and hardly changed color. If I bleach for a few more days the stems and the flower calyxes may turn white too. I try to leave the calyx of this flower. It's done. I pick up the small flowers that remain on the edge of the shifter. It is wonderful that these little flowers have life. We can see how the colors change. Congratulations on completing our mission! Let's eat a white geometric apple that grows on Jupiter. Does it look like a styrofoam net? No! This magical apple can bleach and purify itself! Wow, very magical, isn't it? Come on, eat and enjoy our happy time! It's windy on Jupiter. Now we can get on our spaceship. Just as planets revolve around the sun plant life also cycles around. We are frying to the next planet! 8. Saturn ● Cosmic Reincarnation: Blowing amongst the endless stars... our next planet is in the distance. Lots of icicles are flying around! Don't let them hit our spaceship! We're getting closer. Going through the jet stream! - Saturn - Cosmic Reincarnation We are approaching on a planet of silent shadows.. There are hardly any leaves left on the trees... As if a planet lightyears away is the only light coming here... As if a planet where the color of life have withered away... Even so, our spirit and imagination can travel through a space-time continuum... Even in the darkness we can envision color and light within our spirit. Feel the wind feel imagination. Flowers trees leaves are circulating universe. Planetary plants. Even after death the souls around the universe will come back to the earth as living seeds. From a dead tree flowers are sprouting. Our imagination takes wing to next planet! 9. Uranus ○ Sky Winging: We come to the world of lively sunlight. Birds are flapping their wings in the trees! A sound of new life sprouts and echoes. - Uranus - Sky Winging Finally, small planets were born from bleached planetary plants. Let's see! These are hydrangea flowers I previously soaked in bleach for three days. All three types are made from the same dried hydrangea flowers. After prolonged bleaching it turns into a leaf-like appearance. Withered flowers that have ended their lives. Now, new hope blooms! Let's fry high into the sky! We are in the air swirling in the wind. Rise more! We become a wind. A light flower is shining. More up in the sky! Now we can see the entire magnificent Uranus below us from space! White cosmic flowers snowfall through the universe like flowing wings! We fly to the next planet like one cosmic bird of light! 10. Neptune ○ Creating a Universe: We're going down to our last planet. - Neptune - Creating a Universe We have landed on the fertile soil. Plants of various species, shapes and colors are born from beneath the earth. Your final mission on Neptune is Creating a Universe with Bleached Planetary Plants. Let's walk the ground looking for dead plants to breathe life into your universe. Good luck with your lovely dried plants collection. Now, look back at the missions we have accomplished on our journey! Packing Preparation Bleaching Flowers Whiteness Survey Botanical Exploration Drying Plants Flora and Methodology And I, as a tour guide expressed the great flow of the universe with white planetary plants. In the dark dead souls through the cosmic reincarnation will come back as living seeds. In the sunshine become a wind soar more appreciate from space. Sky Winging How do you feel? Throughout this journey? The earliest fossils of the first plants were found in rocks formed 3.4 billion years ago. The succession of plant life is very long and old. The distance from the sun to Neptune is about 4.5 billion km. The word 'Universe' is one of the widest words in the world. Everything in this world is contained within the universe. So, you are free to create your universe as you like. You can take photos or edit a video of white dried flowers. You may compose a song or write a story about your universe. Through your rainbow of life experiences I look forward to seeing your one of a kind universe come to fruition. Now, it's time for a Neptune fruit punch! New planets will be born from here. In the vortex, the gas is cooled and becomes fine particles that clump together. Micro planets are attracted to each other grow larger as a planet. We are so lucky to see the birth of a planet! Falling leaves break down into the soil and support new fruit growth. We're going back to our water planet! 11. Father Sun ∞ Mather Earth: Look! The vastness of the ocean below us! Our spaceship is plummeting! We are finally coming home to our planet. FATHER SUN MOTHER EARTH Plants, animals and people live together with the river. White flower planets orbit above water. Warm sunshine and clear water give energy to the plant life. Father sunlight illuminates our water planet Mother Earth in the universe to sustain the cycle of life. The flower I met that day seems like most of the seeds flew away. Dusk turns to night. As temperatures cool snow is falling from the clouds. Melting snow slowly seeping into the earth. Sunlight gently shines on the watery acorns. From Mother Earth A new planetary life is given. Now let's share your universe with the astronauts on our tour. Any art expression is alright in our project gallery you can complete our mission Creating a Universe with Bleached Planetary Plants. Well, this is the end of our tour. However our imagination traveling and the cycle of life continue endlessly. In this natural world our new imaginary sun begin to shine with Mother Earth. Thank you for joining our tour Traveling to White Dried Flower Universe. I appreciate you very much. See you next time. 12.
