This is a from-zero-to-hero, crash-course in Sketchnoting!

Mauro Toselli (aka @xLontrax ) is a Sketchnoter since 2012, he lives and work in Italy and he use sketchnote in almost any aspect of his life and work. He will guide you through all the steps that we will take to create a complete, useful, sketchnoted, Sketchnote Cheat Sheet .

This course has 3 main goals:

  • Introduce you to the basic concepts of Sketchnote
  • To actually make a few sketchnotes
  • To inspire you to keep going

It is a very practical and straightforward class: for each lesson we will introduce the topic and we'll do some practice together, then we will explain the assignment and give you and example to follow.

At the end of the class you will get your own, beautiful sketchnote!

Although we are aware that we will just scratch the surface of the immense world of Sketchnote, we believe this is a quick and fun way to start to understand the terrific power of visual note taking.

Very easy!

Just grab pen and paper and... see you in class!

Teacher

Born analog in 1963, naturalized digital in 1994. Lifelong learner. In my professional life I have been a shop assistant, a shop manager, an IT teacher, a Technical Director of an IT private school, the italian Berghaus Brand Manager and today an IT Director.

I do love a lot of things. The love for mountains is hardwired in my DNA, I sketchnote for love and for work, I do love cooking as well as coffee and pizza. If you ask me to depict myself in 3 words I'd say Enthusiasm, Passion, Empathy.

In 2016 I did learn about #the100DayProject on The Great Discontent website and I did it. Once finished, I had a bunch of tutorials and I found myself going back to them to draw inspiration and ideas. It was natural to think to consolidate everything in a book. So I did. See full profile

1. Introduction: Welcome toe sketch. Not for everybody. My name is Model Roselli. I miss Kiss Notre and from Milan, Italy, and I'm ekes Laundry Peaks and I'm a visual pirate and disease. A crash course in schedule. When I started in 2012 higher the blast and I started drawing like crazy without even knowing what really sketch. Not was it took a while to understand that what is gets on and what is not in a natural schedule per in is not just drawing. It is not toe embellish our our notes. It's, uh, a methodology. It's a methodology that engaged the visual system in our brain. As you can see here, the visual system engaged the 50% off the cortex and 70% of their new rooms. Things is not invented. You can google it. You can find these this figure by yourself while you sketch. Not you will get a better retention off the concept off the meaning off. The idea you're you're drawing sketching up is also a trigger, and it's faster their normal notes. A soon as you see, they sketch not old ideas, all the meaning, the concept you have drone. They will come back easily and quickly in your in your mind. No, I have free main goal for this class. The 1st 1 is to give you the Benny Basic knowledge about schedule. The second is to create with you we will draw a longer, uh, some scheduled. And at the end of the off the class, the final result will be a beautiful cheat sheet schedule cheat sheet. That will be your first, your first castle. Third, to inspire you to keep going. If you are new to scarce, not I think this could be a very good class for you. If you are an experienced gets Notre, I'll be so hard, nerd tohave you in reviewing glass? Okay. Okay. Okay, Don. And from time to time, I will jump in tow, give to spice up the less some off that very serious and focused. It's Notre and yeah, come on, it will be fun. See you in class. 2. Structure and Flow: Welcome back in the lead, we lose some worker. The topical off this lesson is structure inflow Structural floor are some of the fab rates subject off conversation among sketch note because there is a wall, world and world universe. I told you, if you're gonna pay attention, this guy is so serious. Is drug you in East Los off? He's about structuring flow These mainly because every sketch not has a limit. It can be the piece of paper you're drawing on or the size of your of your wife of your bada no matter what, you must deal with it. And that now is where structure and flow comfortably. Um, when an experience case Notre see a white piece of paper e he can foresee how toe combine all the drawings, all the writing, Everything he can see At the first glance, this car folding off is a scheduled international. The structure is the positioning. Okay, the juiced oppose the juxtaposition ing off your writings illustration of yourself to it and all the old elements off the scheduled and the flow is the path that the readings has, along with all the elements in the infrastructure. OK, normally the's ease the usual structure. We will see every their books, magazine, Onda slides, empower point and whatever from top to bottom and from left to right for for reading, scanning and the I'm anticipating the structure off the schedule we're going to do. And this is it. And I suggest that you to use a piece of paper, a four or letter size in port right orientation and divide in 55 areas. The 1st 1 in a small area at the top for the title, then three blocks of information. Because we are talking about trimming subject in the third class and then another is more part for the for the food. Don't worry. You will put your senior, sir, and some notes for for for a wrap up. But we want our sketch not toe be interesting. Mysterious to spice up our castle toe. Give it some read. Um, so I would like to suggest a trick off mine I love to use. And they called t and I I anti. What does it mean? It means tea and I is topic, and that is the main subject. I'm skits. Nothing about It can be something I'm listening from a broadcaster or a video or the title of the chapter or the book I'm reading or my main I e. My main idea, that is that the general description off the charts subject then notes the notes are what I'm capturing. Okay, What? The letter is saying what they say, or I see in a video as he's want one. Okay, And then the ideas, the ideas is what spark from what you're capturing. Okay, The epiphany. The spark of genius. The ideas. OK, The trick here is to start with the first element of with the first block drawing writing the topic, then note, then ideas the next. For the next element, you start to draw topping notes idea, but in the reverse order from writer to left, as you can see here in the in the picture. So you have a very nice flow with the rhythm. You may think this is confusing, but I I ensure you when you will go back and to see your sketch, not at the first glance. The fifth thing is that you need to put a bit of a station on. You need to focus to understand what's going on? Why this? OK, maybe at the beginning is not really clear. And you you need to read it to understand. But in the moment you understand how to flow works, you will have what they say They are hot moment. You obtain that the reader really focus on yours, Castle, and try to understand, OK. And a Z told you in the production. This is priceless because, uh, it's the Scots not triggers the attention. And after after a second is faster, everything you put there, just jump out and come back in your, uh, in your mind in a second. Uh, okay. This is the war lesson. And now the most disappointed for you. I'm I know. And I'm sorry for that part. Off these off this class, you need to draw the first block in your in your question. Are you kidding? You told nothing about sketch, Not a barter structure and floor, and that you want now we to draw something. Sure. Be patient. These will make sense and the end of the at the end of the class. So go in the project, that resources section of this class and that you will find the link to download these example and use it. You can copy it for this time. It's OK to copy the end. The creator The first information. Block off your of your schedule. Once done, do not forget to share with the with the glass. I will do my best to see every each one of your works and leave and leave comments, suggestion or may complement If is the case. Yeah. Well done. Five. Uh, okay. At work. See you in the next lesson. 3. Drawing Objects: I know you are disappointed about the previous lesson. You back. I know, but now is where this glass start to become juicy. Okay? Yeah. The topic is illustration. I can hear you. I know what you're thinking. I can draw. Or if I had No, it was going to be so hard, I would never start things. Class and bull beep is not the case. You don't need to know how to draw. It's a promise. Follow the guy. Here is the most quartered same things from the sketch note handbook. The scheduled AM book is the first book about the sketch, not bike. My friend and mentor, Mike Rohde. Micah is the guy who in 2006 calling the the terminal skacel. And he actually is the father off schedule se this book out because is the absolutely this gets not Bible back on track ideas, not our east perfect sketch map is about idea and not art. Okay, so don't struggle too much to make your perfect a masterpiece. What? You need easy resemblance. Okay. Not, uh, not fidelity. Not at the stage e mean assed. Mike teach in his booker all start with the basic five figures. Okay. Square psycho triangle a week line lying, sir. And the handouts with these five. Basic figure, you can draw everything. We'll start with the with the object. And, uh, I want you toe do an exercise end to draw what's in your bag. If you don't want toe draw what's in your bag just to draw what's on your people top or what? You see. I say what's in your bag? Because, uh, moral Hesse There are very simple things. Toe. Very simple things. Toe draw. Okay, it zvehr e is very easy. This is what I did. Very, very, very quickly. Let me do something together and new. Okay for these exercise that I use a a campus with with agreed that is very is very helpful . And let me start to draw what's in in our bank. The wallet. Very easy. Okay. For the for the man on the wall, it can be something. Let this Okay, this is this is a wallet. Four women that maybe a different, more stylish wallet. Okay, You see, I know. Struggling it all. He said the result of a semblance. Okay, These are wallets and the form Very easy to. This is a phone, the car keys maybe with the being a car key with the the buttons for opening day. The wars here. It's a car key. Maybe we have ah, camera. Very. You know, if you have your phone, maybe you don't need the camera about anyway. And nice camera can be helped. That's the camera. All right. Resemblance. Resemblance is everything. You is everything you need. So take your time. Take your bag looking side and draw what's in your bag. Very simple, not struggle. Toe fidelity. Just resemblance. Have fun. Keep going. And do not forget to share your work with the class. See you in the next lesson. 4. Drawing Icons: icons. We talk about tycoons. Icons are the secret weapon for every sketch. Notre, they are so flexible. You can do anything with with icons. And they are mandatory in any decent toe released. Okay, let me stop. These are if you example off of icons. You can create your own set off own set off icons. And each one of them has a complex meaning that if you write in words, it take ages to do. He's always so excited about icon sender. I can second him. I concern microcosm. And the in a few trait you can summarize AWOL speech. A war concept, I hope. Way Show us something rather than just chatting. Okay, let me do it. The most simple use off of icons is in the inner released. Let we try this one on this to three. You can just add some cycles. And then when you start working on the task, you can you don't just one. When I stopped us one and I stopped maybe through the dusk to add thought when I finished the task one I can take it there or I stop a eliminated task to I can cancel. Eat. Okay, and you can do whatever you whatever. Whatever you want. I have a favorite set of, uh, of Eichel's. Uh, they are five more or less. These is I mean, so Ben Big Ben Deasy's the one I use the most. That means attention. Okay, these element that require attention, okay? Or he's one very I know very important, And that it can be very important here. These or this one. When I used these sick. When I take knows during meetings, if there is something I don't understand that have toe toe come back later or Alaska. I used these, the's icon, and then I'll add an arrow. And the outcome when I get the answer, the the outcome that can be Mm mm doggy. Okay. Or it could be as above accident, okay. Or whatever. And the this one a magnifying glasses to be true. I always throw these inclined this way. Okay. When there is this icon, I need toe google or a to go or to go more, uh, more in deep. Okay. Anyway, I called our microcosm off information. I already told that Go on, please. Is that simple? OK, now for you, there is an exercise. Just goto process resources and unload these least okay. And try to draw a set of icon for each one off these statement. Beware. It is not that easy as it seems. You may need toe attract a few times toe, find the right icons. I really look forward to see what you do with this. A. I'm extremely excited and there's always share with the class. Thank you. 5. Drawing People: Oh, okay. Now we talk about people drawing people. Those small guys is the my by far my favorite part. Er in any in any in any Skechers and with people you can express verbs, action and summarize. Oops. Sorry. Summarize a AWOL speech, but let me see something. Oh, okay. Here. Uh, you may notice that I don't dro faces. Why, this is This is very simple because okay, deface a track. Attract all the organization. If you draw a face, all the rest very often bus unobserved. But I think it is better that I show you how to draw fun in beautiful leader people. Just for this exercise, a piece of paper with great there would be tremendously helpful. Start by drawing six equidistant lines. And so you get five spaces that are the perfect proportion for your little guys. With the this reference at mind, you can start to play with the position first had and neck. You can incline Ah, the head or the neck or both toe achieve different FX. Then you have arms. Very important. The most important part for the body expression. You can use the curved line for a smoother effort Or you can draw angles for the elbow, Sephora and more inches cheeseburger expression. Or you can combine both as you prefer. Then we have the body. Ah, the secret year is the relation between shoulder and hits and decide the lines that connect the two off them straight. Oh, band, You can, uh, give that different character different expression to your body to your guys, then here in the one. Okay, I am very anxious. No, we have the legs, same as the armor. You have three articulations to play with hips, knees and ankles and ah, also with the legs. And you can you can have a tremendous effect off the meaning of your of your character. Look at this. Smooth curves and straight arms and pay attention toe defeat that are extremely important toe. Determine the orientation off your character. Look at these. The one looks up the first on the left caps and the other looks down now is time toe put everything together and, uh, I use a double line toe. Announce the defector again. Here is this stiff, very hashes a bit angry guy waiting. Then there is this one we was thinking with basing, walking, immerse in. He's so and, uh, with all the joints, the articulation you have you can really reproduce a lot off effects. Look at this shoulder. Very bend shoulder and the cross it legs and feet. Now a smooth criminal that the London terror and then terra on Deng. Okay, next one. And that you can also produce very precise position. This guy is doing Ah, Tai, Cheech one and particularly these position in 108 young form disposition is called done. Deal. Very precise. Okay, now, the the last one is for you. These guy is slightly bending toward you. Very friendly bent knees not aggressive. And give you a pencil is turn to do your homework. Okay, then going the resources and the download the slide and draw your little guys. This that express these words and action. Once done. Please share with the class is so we will have fun together and we can commend and give you nice feedback. Thank you. See you in the next lesson. Child. 6. Arrows are the Queens: I would like to introduce you to arrows and rose. Are the queen so easy to use? So easy to draw? They connect elements in your scheduled and give direction when the structure and the flow are not so perfect and that you can always rely on a on an arrow. Give the right the direction and also you can use them to drive attention on a particular piece of your of your schedule. They are always happy toe help End is really a large family. Any shape, any day mation, any style a rose. We'll come at hand in the next lesson where we put everything together and we create a sketch be. 7. Sketchipe: It's timeto put a worker. We have seem so far. Ah, now we draw a sketch P what is this? Ketchup e is a sketch. Know that recipe? Okay. And I want to create a silence sketch. Not Do not use words. Just drawings, object and icons and arrows. AZM or fear more people and everything we have seen so far. Um I'll draw along with you and do not please aim for a masterpiece. He is right. Don't struggle too much. Just stay lose keep going. And that here You need to understand how to put everything together. He will do the same. And you will see quick traits and not much fidelity just resembling. And the user off a structure and flow in the on the under paper. You know the same. Please. My recipe will be how to make coffee with the market bought off course I'm Italian. Let me start. These was actually fun. I did the same. And now you drove your sketch be and poster share with the class along Take occasion. Toe ask question. Tell us war that you found harder. What was more finer? What you do not understand? Whatever. Okay. Mm. Yeah. Boast ship. See you in the next lesson. Don't 8. Update your Sketchnote - second block: probably you're wondering what happened? Who? Our main scheduled The main topic of Discuss the chip. Good question here in these. Ok, now it's time Toe at the end of the second block to our to our schedule. And the second block will be what we talk about in the last lessons and which is drawing figures, growing frustration. Remember, this time you have to drop. You have to draw in the reverse order. Remember that he and I i nt So you start from right drawing the topic off the lesson, then going the middle and adding your note. And then on the left your idea, your personal insight. I bet this time e it looks more easier. And maybe I say maybe you would like Toa start over and redraw also the first part. Because now you have more an idea off what you're doing. It's up to you. Do whatever whatever you want do it is a good practice. Yeah, Go for it. Okay. You can go on the resources and don't know that these this example complete the second block off the off. This gets note and Aziz usual share with the class. See you in the next lesson. That will be next would be fun. Don't 9. Text and Lettering: Okay. We are now at the third and last topic off these class, which is next text. The like illustration is a very important part. Off the is the counterpart of illustration in a in A schedule. And four, those lucky ones that are natural are a beautiful handwriting disease. No brainer is no problem it Or but for the rest of us, like me, that was, um writings. Looks like chicken scratch. These can be really a heart park. Okay, let me show you something. This is how I used to work when they started the oh, not stop. But a couple of years later, I started skating anything. My God, that's really awful. Those letters looks like insect. It's mush it on the windscreen of my car after a long creep on the motorway. Something like that. That beautiful the there is no really secret. It's only brought this and also brought these. And maybe you can practice. It's on Lee about practice and feel pages or in pages and pages off. Text off, being lettering. Try different styles, tried different forms off letter lettering. And writing is very important because you need your schedule is readable. Okay, it can have. Ah, beautiful illustration. Perfect. It can be art and no problem at all. But if the text is not readable, it's a really or readable just to you because you can read your own chicken scratch. It's it could be it could be a program. Okay, also, you can work with the texter to create a visual higher, clean. You can create really D information architecture and the feature off the off the text you can work with Are these three the sites they wait and the case Let me try something together. Okay? Mr. This is working with great here. They are very helpful and that with a practice that you don't need it anymore. But for now, it's okay to have it. I'm writing this world in different style. The 1st 1 is very quickly, which is terrible. And you see, I change in the size of the pan. I playing with the with the eight. Now I'm trying to write just the walls in lower case. That's is nice. Give Ah, dynamic look atyour you're writing and you can pay with the dimension to create an hierarchy and the architecture off information almost more and now my favorite ever What I call calm a case I do mean to maximize the effect. I love it. I love toe. I love to draw in the in the style is a playful and nice looking Not boring Give it a try And now is the practice time and for the practice I suggest you toe make a simple exercises toe Draw your family tree using a different style different hate and lower case K za and to create your hierarchy off the off the family tree. Off course for the sake off privacy. Judy Pierre Baba. Don't put the name just to use Grandma. Grandpa, Mom, Dad, siblings Their stuff like that and I not me. He show you you an example off what to do then you do it and share with the class big. Why? Because he's fun. Enjoy a good way to practice. These are heroic. A is to draw your family structure for the sake of privacy. Here, hide them right names and ah, well, you get the idea. As you can see, a k I use different styles from for a moment that branches and, uh, you will find I'm using a consistent double line feature for the women in Ah, my family. Okay, Grandpa. Grandma. Okay. Here. My dad, My mom with the double line. Well, I forgot the uncle and don't. And now change the size of the pan. Me, my sister with the double line you then high ever nada system sister for my niece and nephew. Okay, Of course, brother. And low for my niece. A nephew is a different story. They are my heart. They are important and they deserve a different style. I add a few arrows for clarity and very thin. No, nothing very bold. And here it is, crisp and clear. 10. Update your Sketchnote - third block: is no timeto draw. The last part that was block of information of our sketch, not the main outcome off discuss. And, uh, it's as usual. You may find urge toe put at work your new lettering skill. So if you want to redraw everything, modify something in there what you already did Please feel free to do it and to redraw and modify your text. Whatever it is, please do not draw the heather, the title area and the photo because we have a couple of things more toe to say about it. Okay, Once done, do not forget to share with the with the class. See you in the next lesson. I've actually nothing to say about this. Do as he said, Thanks. 11. Complete the sketchnote: Title and signature: before we finish our schedule toe a couple of more things. The first thing about the title of a schedule the title is the first thing that we and our look at and it must be Ah, harnessed is must be trustworthy. And the the title in discussing is not a a quick bite tool. Okay, you must think about your title and put the right one and thinking about the title in not just the topic and that you think in the moment he is them, right? And the title must be meaningful and the only comprehensive. And give an idea off what the sketch map is about. Just imagine, toe, have your book off your father recipe and you flip the page and that he's that last that Buster Buster, It doesn't work. If you look at the recipes, there is pasta carbonara by star. I love my three China passed a common Ghoula born on years and they're just from the title , you know, almost exactly war what you will get And now I'm hungry. I got to eat to make Buster. The second thing is about the food. Please remember toe put every single time on every single work of yours. The senior chur, okay? And the date where when you did this case motor or you published the discussion that is important. You are starting to schedule. Maybe other people are already accomplished this case, Notre and once, particularly when you publish when you poster your work. Uh, it's out there. You never know what what's happening from that moment that moment on and we are or nice people, respectful and harness people. But it can happen. It happened to me that some particular piece of your work can be stolen or miss used and or use for other things. Maybe also not related to the topic of your of your sketch. Not again, is it? He's right. The the copyright is a birth right over your schedule. And, uh, it Z not just to be not hoping the not against it the Opel culture, all these things that is the Internet is feel that one season line us to be free. And of course, well, in your schedule you're putting your thought. You are maybe putting your precious idea, your family jewels. And he's, uh you're right. He's normal to protect. You're work so rich. Something about copyright. Here is a slide they made ages ago about the cooperate. And you may look at creative call most just Google to learn more about the open license. I'm I'm been receiving us about about that and that. I believe you may need to Just going to learn more a longer with your signature in the Indeed, in the in the food or of your obvious cancer, I think is good to create, inhabit and to put in license. Okay, Yes, We are covering our butts. It's important. So last part. Complete your sketch not. And, uh Well, uh, we will meet again in the project area to see the final outcome extremely excited. 12. Wrapping up: We did it. We did it! We did. We did it! Oh! Oh, We did it. We did it! Well done. You did it. Are you happy? Off course you are. You must be and off course. Now that you think you to your scheduled here is mine. The one I did with you. And you see small things away. Off the details you can can be improved. It's absolutely normal. Okay, now it's all about practice. And I really hope you will keep going if you don't have ideas, O r. Whatever. If you want and help on how toe what will be the next step you may find in the resource is the link to download the these least these are ideas about what you can do with your new skills. No, Before we we go. As usual, I have a couple of more things toe to say. Did I mention I published toe books about visual drawing sketch? Not, maybe. No. The 1st 1 is these Small guy is a small book. Almost it's inexpensive and that you will find 101 tutorials to draw every day everyday object. Okay, just about doing the 2nd 1 he's this Deasy's My legacy is what I think and I believe about sketch not in Hey, we're for matter Each single piece, each single page off this book has been has been drawn by hand This is the the some off three years off work If you want to check them out I There is the link in the resources off course. No pressure at all. The last thing if you did that your homework meaning that you posted the final sketch map at at least one interaction and to exercise I will be more than happy to send you this original, hon. Written and free Yes, free statement of accomplishment with your name and the sign by me If you are happy to receive it and just drop me a line Get in touch with me I'm or active on Twitter and Eastern Remember, If you don't have a twitter or instagram, you can go on my website model Gisele dot com Go on the contact form and send me any mail. I e really hope you had, uh, fun. And you found this class interesting. A useful despite my acrobatic English and they're sometimes not perfect. Ah, recording off off the video and the audio. Whatever. I really hope you make a good user off what you learn here. Uh, I'm planning toe create other other class about the users of visual in problem solving and project management. Drop me a line. Get in the staying touch. I hope you to see in the next class. Thank you very much indeed. I had a wonderful time. Oh, my God. It's over. Thanks. God, keeping government That guy's sometime is very is very odd. I'm exhausted. Okay? And some. I bet some of you think why I do not run. The less sun and I live in to allow the talking.
