1. Welcome to the Class: When we talk about watercolors, it's a very good art medium to explore for painting. In this class, we're going to paint a beautiful serene pine landscape with water colors. We are going to use a minimal color palette and some basic easy painting techniques to create this entire painting. Pine trees are the major element in the entire painting, which we are going to paint using different colors. Hey everybody, myself, Rothwk Patel. I'm a self taught independent artist and an interior designer by profession. I personally love to explore different art forms and styles and not stick to one particular thing. If you're joining me, you'll find a variety of classes that I create. We're going to start by talking about all the art supplies that you will need for the entire class. No need to worry at all. In case you're missing out on any particular art supply, you'll find it very easily in any nearby local art store. Then we're going to talk about the minimal color palette that we're going to use, which will help you to understand the color palette in a better way. Then we're going to start by painting the background trees, which will definitely have a lighter saturation of color. So we'll start with ocher yellow, then we are going to have a beautiful green pine trees, which is also going to be in the background. The entire process of painting these pine trees is really satisfying. Then we're going to add this minute detail of creating a beautiful bridge in between to create some aesthetics, and then we're going to have these beautiful foreground solid black pine trees. Using basic watercolor techniques, you can complete the entire landscape, which will not take a lot of time. You do not have to worry about the output, enjoy the process of creating. You're also free to explore and experiment with the entire painting. The class is absolutely suited for beginners and also intermediate and advanced level artists can try it. So without any delay, grab your art supplies and join me on this creative journey. 2. Art Supplies: Everybody, now, let us talk about all the art supplies that you will need for the entire class. I have placed all my art supplies on the desk surface in a systematic manner so that I can give you the details. In case you're missing out on any particular art supply, you'll find it very easily in any nearby local art store, or you can go for any good alternative. So the first art supply is a simple glass container in which you can observe there is some clear water. Then the next art supply is a simple masking tape that we are going to use to place around the watercolor paper so that when we are done with the entire painting, we get a beautiful white border around the entire painting. Then next up, I have a simple tissue paper. It is always good to have a tissue paper while you're working with water colors to dab your brush and remove excess amount of water or color. Then next up, I have a simple color palette in which you can observe these little sections where you can take out water colors in it, and it is also having a separate mixing place. So you can make sure that you have a color palette which is having enough space to mix the colors well. Now, let us talk about the brushes that you will need for the entire class. So you will need two quill brushes, which are also basically known as mob brushes of size four and size two. Using these brushes, we can apply watercolors in a very comfortable manner. Now, apart from the quill brushes, you will need a round brush of Size four. We can also call it as a detailing brush. This will help us to paint the pine trees in a very detailed manner. Then next up, I have a simple pencil that we are going to use to create a basic reference line before we start painting the pine trees. You can also have an eraser side by so that you can erase the pencil lines in case you make any mistakes. Then I have a simple pair of scissors that we are going to use to remove some extra portion from the watercolor paper to make it completely square. Now let us talk about the watercolors. The first one is Sab green, black, dark green, light green, and ca yellow. These are the five basic colors that you will need for the entire class, and I have also placed them in the color palette. Then I have a simple ruler, which is having dimensions in centimeters. We're going to use this ruler to convert our watercolor paper into a perfect square. Now let's talk about the main art supply, which is the watercolor papers that we're going to use. I'm using watercolor papers from Cansen. It is A five size, and it is 300 GSM. You can take care of the GSM, which is basically the thickness of the paper so that you can apply heavy washes on it. No need to worry about the brand. You can go for any good alternative. So these are all the art supplies that you will need for the entire class. No need to worry at all in case you're missing out on any particular art supply, you'll find it very easily in any nearby local art store, or you can go for any other good alternative as well. Now, let us move towards the next part. 3. Color Palette: He, everybody. So now, let us talk about the color palette that we're going to use to create this beautiful serene landscape. So I'm having a simple scrape of watercolor paper in which I have labeled color palette and all the colors that we're going to use in the bottom portion. These are five basic colors, and I'll be showing you these colors one by one on the paper. So here is the entire painting. You can observe three basic colors that we have used, which is cayello, green, and black. There are multiple shades of green that we're going to mix together. That's why we are having five basic colors on the color palette. So it's really great that we're going to use only five basic colors and you'll be able to create the entire painting. Let us start with the first color, which is solid black color. I'll be using my quill brush of Size four. Take a little bit of water and mix it well in the color palette. Apply a small patch of solid black color onto your color palette sheet. You might be wondering why we are doing this particular step. It is really important for you to know the exact application of the color onto the paper. Because once the watercolor dries, the saturation of the color decreases, so you'll get an exact idea of the color that you're using while you're working with the painting. Now, I'll take the next color, which is dark green. Just add a little bit of water and mix it well in the color palette again. Whenever you're working with water colors, you should always take care that you need to mix the colors well with water. No need to hurry, mix them well in the color palette. In case you want to make your dark green color a little bit more darker, you can add a little bit of black in it as well. Now, similarly, we have three more colors to add, which are sap green, light green, and co yellow. So we're going to repeat the same steps. You can observe them carefully. I'll be cleaning my brush in water, and I'll take some sap green, mix it well in the color palette, and apply a small patch on the paper. Now, it is not at all compulsory for you to create the same color palette in case you want to explore with the entire painting and choose your own color palette. It is completely fine. You're free to explore. In case you want to use the same color palette, that is also completely fine. I'll be applying the last co yellow patch onto the watercolor paper, and we are done with the entire color palette. Now, let me take a little bit closer so that you can observe all the colors carefully. These are five basic colors required for the entire painting. You can keep the paper nearby while you're working with the entire painting. This will help you to choose the colors in a better way. I hope that you got an exact idea about the color palette. Now let us move towards the next part. 4. Lets Place the Paper: Hey, everybody, now let us place the watercolor paper onto the desk surface. The watercolor paper that we are using is basically in a rectangular form, which is in a size of a five. We are going to convert it into a perfect square. So I'll be using a simple ruler. The short size of the rectangular paper is 15 centimeters. Let us put one end of the ruler at 0 centimeters and put one dot on 15 centimeters onto the paper. Similarly, you can add one more dot to get two basic points so that you can draw a straight line. Now, simply use your ruler and draw a straight line. Now you can observe that we've got a perfect square. We're going to remove the extra part. I'll be using a simple pair of scissors. You have to be a little bit careful while you're working with a pair of scissors. Simply follow the pencil line and cut the extra portion. Now, it is not at all compulsory for you to convert this rectangular sheet of paper into a perfect square. In case you want to do the entire project on a rectangular paper, it is completely fine. Now you can use this extra piece of paper to create your color palette. It is completely fine. So we are ready with our square paper. You can place it onto the desk surface wherever you want to paint. Now we are going to use a simple masking tape to apply it onto the borders of the entire paper. The reason behind applying a masking tape is so that once we are done painting and we remove the masking tape, we get a beautiful solid white border. I'll be taking a simple piece of masking tape, be a little bit careful, align it with the paper line. Make sure that the masking tape and the paper line is parallel. Try to have a little bit of portion of the masking tape onto the paper and a little bit of portion of the masking tape onto the desk surface. Now, similarly, we'll be adding the masking tape on the remaining four sides as well. Let me start with the bottom portion. And when you're applying the masking tape, make sure that you apply a little bit of pressure using your finger or your thumb. Now, I'll be placing the masking tape on the left hand side, and similarly, I'll be placing one last masking tape on the right hand side. I hope that you've got an exact idea how you have to apply the masking tape on all the four sides. Once you're done with the painting, removing these masking tape will be very satisfying, and you'll definitely enjoy the process. You'll also get a beautiful white border. We're done placing the entire paper. Now while we are painting, the paper will not move from the surface as well. Now let us move towards the next part. 5. Background Trees: Hey, everybody, now let us start with the first step, which is painting the background trees. So you can observe that we have placed the paper onto the desk surface. We are ready with our color palette, some water, and a tissue paper. I'll be using my quill brush of size four and just add a very little amount of black color in water so that you get a very less saturated gray color, and we are going to apply a nice coat of this entire water onto the paper. No need to hurry at all. Try to apply an even coat of water on the entire paper surface. Make sure that there is no space left on the entire paper. Also make sure that there is no space left between the masking tape and the watercolor paper. Try to apply an even coat in a slow and steady manner. This is basically known as a wet on wet technique in which we apply an even coat of water initially, and then we apply the color so that the color will automatically spread on the paper surface. Now in the color palette, you will observe that I'm mixing co yellow with a little bit of light green to make the co yellow look a little bit more dense. Now, using my same quill brush, I'll just apply these vertical strokes in a very random way. No need to worry about perfection. You can observe the vertical movement of my quill brush, and you'll also observe that the color spreads automatically. Since we applied a nice coat of water in the background. Using the tip of your quill brush, you can add these little vertical strokes on the topmost portion as well. Now, this is the first player, and we are going to use our round brush of size fo and just simply use the same occur yellow color from the color palette. You can make it a little bit more saturated by having less amount of water and more color in it. You can also check it on a scrape of paper. Now simply create a small vertical line and start adding these little strokes from the topmost portion, and as you move towards the bottom area, just increase the size of the strokes that you're making. This is the first layer that we have created for the background trees, which are basically pine trees, and it's a very satisfying process of painting the pine trees. You'll definitely enjoy it. Let me repeat the steps once again for you. So you just have to create a simple vertical line using your round brush of size four. You can apply very less pressure on your round brush, use the tip of your round brush carefully. Then once you apply the vertical stroke, just start adding these little strokes from the topmost portion. As you move towards the bottom area, you can simply increase the size of the strokes that you're making. There is no specific way to choose the position of the pine trees. You can decide the position of the pine trees according to your convenience. Also, you can play with the shape and size of the pine tree as well. You'll observe that the background color and the pine trees that we are painting right now gets a beautiful blend altogether. It's basically ocher yellow mixed with a little bit of light green. Since these trees are very far, we are not creating a lot of pine trees. Now let this particular layer dry for a while. Once the entire layer is dry, let us use a simple pencil so that we can start painting the green pine trees. Do not create a very dark line, just a light pencil line to get an exact idea of where you have to paint the pine trees using the green color. Now, I'll be mixing light green, sap green, and dark green together in the color palette. While you're mixing the colors, be very much careful, you have to mix them well. Try to have a highly saturated color, try to have less amount of water and more color in your color palette so that you get a beautiful, saturated, solid green color. We are not going to apply the color directly towards the painting. You can use a rough scrape of paper and apply the color patch on that to check whether you have created a beautiful shade of green color or not. I find that the color is good, and our first layer of occur yellow trees is completely dry. Now, start using the same quill brush of size fo, creating these vertical strokes in a very random and natural way. You can follow the pencil line that we have drawn initially, and start adding these vertical strokes. You can start from the left hand portion, slowly move towards the right hand side area. You can observe the way I'm using the tip of my quill brush to create these beautiful vertical strokes. Now we'll cover the entire portion in the bottom area with this particular green color only. Just make sure that you do not leave any space between the masking tape and the watercolor paper. Now we're going to repeat the same steps, but this time we're going to have some more pine trees. So I'll be using my round brush of size four again, which is basically a detailing brush only, and we're going to repeat the same steps of creating these beautiful pine trees. So take the same color, the green color that we created in the color palette. Create a simple vertical line and just attach it with the green color that we have applied in the bottom portion. Now, start creating these little strokes from the topmost portion, and as you move towards the bottom area, just simply increase the size of the strokes that you're making. It's a very simple and easy step to paint pine trees. You'll definitely enjoy it. And as we increase the size of the strokes that you're making while you're moving towards the bottom area, blend it with the bottom green color that we have applied. Now, it is not at all compulsory for you to paint the pine trees in the same way I'm painting right now or in the same position I'm painting right now. You can decide the position of the pine trees according to your convenience. You can make a cluster of three to four pine trees together, and you can also play with the shape and size of the pine trees as well. It is important for you to know the steps of painting it. A from that, you're free to compose and decide the composition of the entire painting. Now, you can simply follow these steps and create some more green pine trees using the same steps. This time, you're going to have variation in the size of the pine trees. Apart from that, these steps are absolutely same. H As you can observe, we are done creating a lot of green pine trees in the background. This time we have a little bit of more pine trees than the co yellow pine trees, and you can also observe a beautiful color combination in the background. You can add a little bit of vertical lines if you want to in between the pine trees. I hope that you got an exact idea of how you have to create these beautiful green pine trees and occ yellow pine trees. These are the pine trees in the background. Now we'll move towards the foreground pine trees, which is going to be solid black. But before that, let the green pine trees dry for a while. 6. Foreground Trees: Everybody, now let us paint the foreground trees. So as you can observe, we are done with the background pine trees. And once the entire green pine tree, which is basically the second layer is dry. I'll be again, using a simple pencil to draw a reference line for painting the foreground trees. So you can observe that the pencil line is not that much visible. So what you can do is you can use your round brush of size four. Take a little bit of black color and create a simple rough line. Make sure that it is not that much saturated. It is just to give you a reference line. So this time we have this deep cavity in the center portion where we are going to create this beautiful, detailed bridge. So now we are going to paint the third layer, which is going to be completely solid black. I'll be taking my quill brush of size two, and we're going to create a highly saturated solid black color. Make sure that you mix the color well with water. Try to have less amount of water and more color in your color palette. Before we apply it to the painting, we'll check it on a rough scrape of paper. So that's why it is important to mix the water color as well. In case you find that the brush is very dry, you can add a little bit of water in it. It is completely fine. I think that the composition of solid black color and water is absolutely fine. Let us start with the left hand portion. Again, it is going to be the same steps. You just have to create these vertical movement. Just follow the reference line and apply the solid black color in the entire bottom portion. You can use the tip of your quill brush to create the area near the cavity to paint in a very perfect manner, and then you can apply the solid black color in the remaining portion. You can observe that the entire landscape using this solid black color in the foreground, creates a beautiful contrast with the background trees. It is the third layer as you can observe, and all the colors are looking really nice. It creates a beautiful effect. Now, similarly, we are going to add pine trees using solid black color as well. Before that, you can use your quill brush to create these little vertical strokes on the topmost portion of the entire landscape that we have painted. Now, if you observe carefully, I have created a nice cavity in the center portion of the entire landscape. We are going to add a nice bridge element using our detailing brush of size four, which is basically a round brush only. Take some good amount of solid black color in it, apply a simple horizontal line, connect it with both the landscapes in the either sides and the cavity in the bottom portion. Now, simply create these vertical lines with a lot of patients. You just have to use the tip of your round brush and apply very less pressure on it so that you get this little thin lines which basically acts as the support to the entire bridge, and the bridge looks a little bit more in detail. I started from the left hand portion. Slowly, I'm moving towards the right hand side, and you can observe how beautiful the entire bridge is looking with the green color in the background. The solid black color basically creates a nice contrast. Now using the same steps, we are going to paint the pine trees. Again, I'll be repeating the same steps. Let me tell you once again. It is a simple step of creating a vertical line, attach it with the landscape in the bottom portion. Now start adding these little strokes from the topmost portion and slowly move towards the bottom area. As you move towards the bottom area, you have to simply increase the size of the little strokes that you're making. Then as you move towards the bottom area, completely attach the strokes with the background solid black color. So we painted a huge pine tree over here. Similarly, we are going to add few more pine trees around it. I'll be creating a vertical line, and I'll be repeating the same steps again. No need to hurry at all. When you're painting the pine trees, you'll need a lot of patience. Try to add these little strokes in a detailed manner so that your pine tree will look a little bit more attractive and aesthetic. You are free to play with the shape and size of the pine tree. It is completely fine. And you can also decide the position of the pine tree. You can add these little vertical strokes just on the topmost portion of the solid black landscape that we have created to make the entire forest look a little bit more dense and in detail. Now, you can carefully observe these steps the way we create a few more pine trees using the same solid black color. O As you can observe that we have painted a few more pine trees on the right hand side as well with a bit of variation in the size. The more little strokes you'll apply, the entire pine tree will look more in detail. That is how you have to paint the pine trees. We are done painting the four ground trees as well. Now let us add a little bit of more detail into the bridge that we have painted in the center portion. Use the same round brush of size four and create a nice horizontal line just below the first horizontal line so that the bridge will look a little bit more in detail. Now we are almost done with the entire painting. I'll be adding a little sun in the sky area. I'll be using my round brush of size four, and you just have to create a small circular shape. No need to hurry at all. Just apply very less pressure and use the tip of your round brush. Try to create a circular shape. You can keep the circle in a small portion only. And you can observe the way it creates a beautiful contrast with the background. So we are done with the entire painting. I hope that you enjoyed creating the entire painting and got to learn something new. The last step is to remove the masking tape so that we are completely done with the painting, and you get a beautiful white border. Now let us move towards the next part where we will remove the masking tape and observe the entire painting and talk about the class conclusion. 7. Class Conclusion: Everybody, you are most welcome to the class conclusion. As you can observe, we are done with the entire painting, and the last step is to remove the masking tape, which is very satisfying step. You'll definitely enjoy it. Try to remove the masking tape in an angle, pull it outwards so that you do not end up tearing your beautiful painting, and as you remove the masking tape, you can observe a beautiful solid white border. Now let me remove the last masking tape. So we are ready with the entire painting. Let me take you a little bit closer so that you can observe all the details carefully. While I was creating this particular class, I made n number of mistakes, and that is something I tell my students never to be afraid of making mistakes. It's a part of learning. Do not forget to add your projects into the project gallery. Feel free to ask any questions or doubts you have related to the class in the discussion section. It would be really great if you leave a review for the class as it encourages me a lot, and my class can reach many more students like you. At the end, I would like to say, keep learning, keep practicing. Thank you so much for joining the class and happy painting.
