1. Welcome: Hello everyone and welcome
to the Procreate series, these tutorials that will help you to start
lettering digitally. So I just want to let you
know that I've recorded these video lessons with
caligraphy in mind, so there are so many more
tools that you could explore. But I think that's often
a problem that you know, you kind of get overwhelmed. There's so much to learn
and you don't really know. You don't need to know at all to start creating
beautiful caligraphy. And in this lesson, I'll cover everything you
do need to know. Even by just going through
these few lessons, you'll be able to walk
away feeling confident and knowing where to start
with your digital calligraphy. And you'll be able to create your workbooks, PDFs, you know, you'll be able to use them
for your own practice or sell them or just use them for your business and especially
for teaching calligraphy. This can be so, so helpful because obviously
it'll just look so much more professional when you're teaching a class and
you're able to offer a work. Yeah, I hope you're
excited to be here. I hope you're excited to
learn and please please now. I'm so happy to offer you
more support if you need it, ask me questions, E mail me, tag me an Instagram
message on Instagram. I'm always always here. If you have any questions, good luck with your
digitizing journey and I hope to see you
soon. Let's get started.
2. Brushes: The first thing we want
to make sure is that you do have procreate on
your ipad, of course. I've got my ipad here. I've got my Apple pencil. That's nicely charged. Make sure it is charge. You can plug this in to your usual charge point basically and give it a good
charge before you start. If you don't have
procreate app just yet, head to App Store, open it up, just
type in procreate, you will need to purchase it. The good news is that it
is a one time purchase. You won't have to do it. It's not like a membership. I've got it already. Here we go. So you just purchase it, download it, that's how
you get it to your ipad. Go ahead and open it
up from your ipad. This is the page you'll see. Obviously, I got some
projects here already. I love this. One's
by my Tod Love. Anyway, I've got some
of these here already. When you want to
make a new project, it's quite straightforward. We are going to head to this
plus icon here on the right. So we're going to click
here and it's going to offer you a lot of
different sizes. I love to work with four size because it's just like a
standard, standard page size. Unless I'm creating something
that I would use on my website or like an Instagram
graphic or like Facebook, or like a Facebook post. I'll probably use square or
screen size in that case, But because I'm used to
using a four day to day, but I'm practicing calligraphy, I just love to keep it to a 44. There we go. I'm
going to click here. The first thing
we're going to talk about today is brushes, because obviously we want to
do some lovely calligraphy and we need to make sure
it's using a good brush. You'll find your
brush settings here. If you just click on
brush al right there, we find this little
window pop up. That's called Brush library. Now in this brush library, you obviously
already have lot of building brushes and
there's so much fun there. So there's a soft pencil
that looks like this. There's also
something for drawing that quite textured
painting brush. I love this one, It's
called a acrylic, it's quite nice, obviously. There's a lot of
brushes already. I'm just going to get rid of this and stick to black For now. I'll talk about colors
of course, as well. But there are also some
calligraphy brushes. If you click here, let's say you just select Script from
here at the bottom. Just select this
and give it a go. Just try lettering something
and see what happens. Okay, I'm just using this and I wonder if I've tweaked some settings in there
already. I don't remember. I'm not 100% happy
with this because I can see some like it doesn't
feel smooth to begin with. My lettering just
looks a bit odd. I don't know. Maybe
you feel the same. If yours is really
big or really small, you can always refer to this slide and you can change
the size of your brush. This is where we would
change the size. Really important, you can do
this for any type of brush, this is really small. While this is really big, you can definitely choose
the size you like. I'm just going to keep mind
somewhere here for now. The second slider here is for opacity of your brush at 100, obviously it's going
to be nice and opaque, whilst at zero it's
going to be zero. It looks a bit fuzzy almost. It's really strange.
You can always play around video settings. Of course, I'm just
going to keep mine at 100 Here again, give it a go. Notice how you can control the pressure on your
thin strokes look thin. In your thick
strokes look thick. But there's just something
not right about it. Let me know if you agree. Now, let's say that's
one of the brushes. What else have we got here? We've got a brush pen as well, so I'm going to click
onto here again. I'm going to give it a go again. I have a feeling that I've tweaked some of the
settings already. Yours might look a
little bit different, but I remember seeing
that there was a lot of low opacity on my connection. Strokes again, this feels fine, but there's just something
about it that I don't like, it doesn't flow properly. Remember the first
time I tried it, I was like, I'm giving up. I'm not going to do
this. I don't like it. But then I discovered that
you can customize brushes. You can make your own brushes. I'm just going to get
rid of this layer. We're going to talk about
the layers to please, don't worry, I'm going to
do everything step by step. The good news is, as I said, you can customize your brushes and this is the first thing
we're going to talk about. Again, if you just click on your brush and open
up a brush library, you can then click this
plus icon here at the top. There'll be some options here. Let's say you've
purchased a brush, that's something you
can do if you go net or if you just Google
procreate brushes. There'll be like lots and
lots of calligraphy brushes, watercolor brushes, all
brushes you can buy. In that case, if you do buy
one, you'll get a file. Make sure that it's
not a zip file, that you zip it, you'll be able to import it if you just click on Import here. You'll then be able to
find it wherever it is on your device. I don't have any board brushes because I prefer to
customize them myself. I'm going to show
you how instead of buying a clicker fee brush,
we can make our own. And I'm going to show you
what settings are now. You'll see that there's
this little drawing pad. You can, you can letter on this and you can try
your brush out as you go. If you want to clear
your drawing pad, you can take three
fingers and just scrub. Just scrub it with
three fingers. I love these shortcuts. There'll be a lot of them.
This is the first one. You can letter something here and then you can just scrub it. We're going to go through
all of these settings and we're going to just
toggle a few things. We're going to change
some things around. We're going to go ahead and
reduce spacing to zero. I'm just going to
do a little dawdle here so we can see
what's happening. I'm going to reduce
the spacing to zero. And you can see how if
you increase spacing, it just creates the stroke into these like
individual stamps. We want it to look
solid like this. So we're going to move
this all the way to zero, that's the first setting. We're going to go into stabilization and
we're going to change the streamline amount to 100. You can see how your stroke just becomes a bit more
smooth, I would say. Again, I'm going
to scribe it out. We're going to keep the
taper settings as they are to change
anything here at all. But we're going
to go into Shape. We're going to go
into Shape Source. If you click on
this little circle, you will open this up. Now if you click on Import, if you go to Source Library, it will open up all of these shapes and
blotches and marks. We want to scroll down. I'm using my pencil
to scroll down and we want to open the oval one. It's somewhere here. You need to scroll a little bit, We get this oval
and we're clicking. Done. Okay? Because we know the calligraphy is
all about ovals, isn't it? When we do a bit of flourishing, maybe it'll be just
so much easier to create those lovely, lovely curves that look a
bit more oval naturally. Yeah, that's a really
good setting to use. Go head to apple
pencil settings. Here again, you'll be able to
change pressure or opacity. And all of these, we
want to change pressure. Let's increase pressure to somewhere about 50% You can see how my stroke
changes at zero. It's all the strokes are quite similar and as we start
increasing pressure, the strokes start to
look a bit different. We're going to keep
it somewhere at, I'd say 50% and we're going
to reduce the opacity. We're going to keep
it at 1% I would say. We keep the color
consistent, I think. And it's just quite nice. That's what we want.
Okay, there we go. Really. That's our brush. I'm quite happy with it. You can test it here again. Always test it here
before you click. Yes, I'm quite happy with this. If you just click
about this brush, you'll be able to name it. Shall we just call it I'd
say my calligraphy brush, because I'm using it every
day. That'll be the brush. So that's the one we
created ourselves. There we go. There it is. Now shall we test it out? I'm going to change
my brush size to, let's say, some, around 20. Let's give it a go. Just apply pressure as we would when we're using a brush pen,
or even a dip pen. You want to go slowly pick
up your pen as you would normally when you're doing
lettering on papers. You just do it as you do it. Remember to go slowly though. There we go. I'm really
happy with this brush. It feels so different
comparing to the built in one. It's just nice that it gives
you a bit more flexibility. Now I just want
to show you again a few little short cuts that you can use if you've
done something wrong. I think that's a good
one to start with. Let's say I've done
this stroke now and I made a little
mistake there. You can tap your ipad
with two fingers. Every time you tap
with two fingers, you go back a step. I'm back at the beginning. Now again, let's just try it
out. I'm writing something. I'm lettering something here. Now I want to go back. I'm just going to two fingers
at a time to go back. Let's say if you
want to go forwards, you tap with three fingers. Something to remember. Okay, I got back with two and I go forward
with three fingers. Oh, it's fun, isn't it? Now, if we want to just
get rid of all of this, you can click on layers. Your layers are hidden
behind these two squares. You can click on layer, you have layer one here. We're going to talk
about layers separately. I'm just swiping this
to the left and you can your layer, now
the layer is gone. Remember when we use the
scrub scrub gesture, you can also if
you've done something wrong or you just want to
raise the whole thing, just again with three fingers, you want to scrub, okay. This will erase everything
on your R boards, so no matter where
it is, you can literally scrub anywhere. Yes, I love those options. There we go. That's
a fast lesson. This is how we create a
custom brush, super useful. I love this brush so much. Definitely very different from using a built in
calligraphy brush. It feels so much more natural. Again, just comparing it to
the brush pen I have here, it just does not feel
and look the same. This is definitely
more natural for me. I hope you enjoy
this brush as well. It's definitely a
good starting point. As I said, you can always
change some settings in it. You can just play around. Use your drawing board and
explore a little bit more. It's a wonderful way to
create your arm brushes, but this could be your
starting point, right? I hope you enjoyed it, and I'll see in the next lesson where we talk about color.
3. Colour: In this lesson, we're
going to talk about color. As we all know, it's
super fun when you can make your lettering look
colorful and pretty. You'll be able to do it again. Make sure that your
calligraphy brush is selected. You can any brush
I'm going to use, the one we've created. It's quite straightforward
to be honest on here. You just go into
this circle here. You can use your
finger or your pen. You'll see this color wheel. All of these colors here on the color wheel are the actual
colors that we call hues. These are all the hues, but then if you
choose a certain hue, let's say this red, you can then choose
its tones and shades. A tone is a color
mixed with white, and a shade is a color
mixed with black. If you want a bit
more terminology in terms of color theory, now that we've chosen red here, we are able to adjust this
little circle inside of this color wheel and pick the color like
let's say I want pink. Now I've got pink here. I can just use my
pink to letter with. Let's say again, I want
to change the color. I'm going to go into
blue, that's my hue. But then I'm going to find a nice shade of blue
or tone of blue. There we go, I'm using
a different color. That's how colors work. That's really useful to know. One thing I'll say that if you ever want to fill in
a shape with color, I'll show you a little trick. You can draw your shape. Let's say I'm doing a heart. Let's say you want to fill
it with a different color. Let's say all you
have to do is drag this little circle into your
shape. Looks a bit funky. All you need to make sure that, you just need to make sure
that your shape is closed. Let's say I'm leaving
like a little gap there and I'm going to try
and drag it into here. It just does my
whole background. Just remember that you
want your shape to be. There's actually
a real fun thing you can do with your brush. Let's say you're
doing the letter A. Your stroke is a bit of oblibe. If you just hold it down, it will straighten it out, but it's not always the
best shape that it creates. Again, if you do a circle and you hold down at your end point, now it makes a perfect oval. Because remember, do
you remember when? Remember when we
imported a shape and it was an oval,
that's what it does. It just automatically
creates this lovely oval. This could be useful
if you want to make your U shapes super smooth. So I'm finishing the shape, but I'm not picking up my pen,
I'm just holding it down. You can see how it
just smooths it out. Okay, Yeah, that's about color. You can change the background
color of course, as well. We'll talk about
layers in a minute. When you click on
your layers you, when you click here, you'll see that there are two layers. There's a back layer and this
layer which we can hide, make visible, that's literally everything on top
of this background. If you click on background, we'll be able to change
its color again. You can just choose
whatever you want. It'll just show up here. It's really up to you
for you to play around. Oh, this looks fun and explore, and when you're happy,
just click Done. And there we go, that's
your background, color. Play around with this a
little bit experiment before we carry on
with the next lesson.
4. Layers: The next thing we're going
to talk about is layers. You can find your layer panel here. Mentioned this already. Once we've got the layer panel here where you see
these too squares. When you open this panel, you'll always have
your background layer, which is usually white. But you can always
change the color. You can change its color by
just clicking on it with your pen and then selecting
whatever it is that you like. Okay, let's say I just
want to keep it white. I thought I did
white that already. On top of your background layer, you have your layer one. You can have as many
layers as you'd like. You can always add a new one. You can also swipe, I'm just swiping to the left. By swiping, you can lock
duplicate or delete. Okay, You can also click here. If you just click
on the layer here, you'll find this little wind
up where it says rename. Let's say we could type
in the calligraphy. You'll get to this
little wind up. You can just click on keyboard and then
select Show Keyboard, and you can now
type calligraphy. Let's say, there we go. So we've called our
layer calligraphy. Yeah, you can always
explore these options here. Clear is a good one. If you do something on it, you can always go here, click here, and Clear, which is good, instead of
scrubbing with your fingers. Yeah, very helpful. The
layer panel is super, super useful if you want to create things on
top of each other. This can be really
helpful for background, so you can do like
different colors and you can control how they're
being displayed. So what's on top of what? I'll give you an
example in a minute. I personally love using
layers for lines. When I do a calligraphy quote, for example, some of
them can be quite long. I would normally do one
line and then I would start another line
in a new layer. Because this way I can
align them easier. I find it easier.
This is how I do it. Let's just give you an example
just for the fun of fit. Let's say we want to have a pink background layer and make sure that you do click on your layer when
you're working on it. Let's say I have two layers now, I'll just add another one. But because I'm working
on the calligraphy layer, this needs to be selected. Whatever I do on screen now is going to be under this layer, not the layer two, which we don't need
right now anyway, so there I will make
my brush color white. Let's say I'm doing a quote. Let's do something here.
I'll just do keep. Okay. I've done one
line of my quote and the last wage R is shining
on the second line. But let's say now that
I've done my one line, and we're going to talk
about alignment and centering your letter
in the next lesson. But I'll just touch base on
it because we do need to use one tool to make this line. If you go into here,
there's a little arrow. You'll now see that you get this little rectangle
around and you can, you can drag it to the
left or to the right. I have this center line here. If I drag and I see this
orange line pop up, I know that this is
right in the center. If you're not seeing that line, I just switched off
of the setting. You're doing this,
holding your pen down, and you're going
from left to right, but nothing's happening.
Nothing's popping up. You want to go into snapping. There's this tool here
that says snapping. And you click on it and you
just change the toggle on. It's on. Now if you
try doing this again, you'll see this line appear. And you'll see that
if you go down, it'll show you where the center point of
the page is as well. Just super helpful so
you get the two lines. Yeah, let's say I want this
to be in the middle here. You can also resize from your From this setting,
from this arrow. As soon as you click on here, there'll be all these options. And you'll get this
rectangle where you can drag your pen to make it
smaller or bigger. But if I do this now, now it is what's happening. So I'm just going to go
back. It's stretching it. I don't want it to be
stretched, obviously. I want to keep it shape. So let me just go back
to keep it shape. We're going to select uniform. Now. Do the same thing, now that I resize it, it keeps it shape,
which is what we want. I might make it a
bit smaller and I might just align it so there. I think I'll leave
this layer here. Now, I'm going to
de, by clicking on this arrow again, I'm
just deselecting. I have my first line
very nicely arranged. I'm quite happy with it. Let's go ahead and create
another layer now. And that's going to
be the second line. If you have a longer quote, you can just keep going until
you have your full quote. Let it out. I'm going to
click here, New Layer, and I might rename
it if you want to, you can do it with me. That's going to be the
second line of my quote. I'm going to make sure that
this layer is selected, not this one, but this
second line layer. I'm going to pick
up my brush again. I'm just going to
do another line. I'm just going to do
the word shining. I love this because I'm
not really worrying about alignment at the moment, I'm just lettering my word. I know I can make it bigger
or smaller if I have to. I find it really helpful because we all know that aligning your words can be really tricky. Now I have my second line which
is a bit too to the left. I would say I want it to
be a bit more centered. We know that click, If we select this arrow here, I'm just making sure that
uniform is selected. That snapping is done. Now, I'm just going to hold on anywhere on my lettering
and just slide it to the right until I
see the center line appear and then I'll know that
it's right in the middle. Actually, I like
it size. I'm not going to resize this time. I'm going to click on the
arrow again to let it go. Beautiful. This is what I aimed
for, two beautiful lines. Now we can still see that lettering is at the top
of the page, which is fine. But there's something
fun you can do. If you ever want to merge
your layers together, there's this fun command
that you can do. You pinch them together,
you just grab two. And then with your two fingers, pin them together like this, then it just becomes one. I can also hide
it or show it by, by unticking or ticking it. And now it acts as one layer. So both of these lines have
been matched together. Now this is one layer which
I can again, move around. If I want to just select the arrow again
and I can move it around, I can make sure that it is right in
the middle of my page. I have these two lines appear. That tells me that
this is the center. There we go, There, I'm
going to leave that. This is how we work with layers. This is what I do for
calligraphy specifically. But there's also something
really fun you can do when you're trying
to do background. For example, let's
say I'm just going to hide this calligraphy layer
for now on ticking it here. Now I'm just going
to hide this layer. And I've changed the
background color to white. Let's say I'm going to
create another layer to draw on top of this
background layer. I've selected this brush on the painting and I've
selected wet acrylic. You can use any brush you like. I made it quite big. I'll size like 50, 51. I've got this layer
two now selected. I'm going to go ahead and do
a bit of coloring like this. I might actually make
my brush even bigger. I'm starting with
this like a wavy line and just coloring
in a little bit, making like a fun texture there. Okay, now I'm going to
create another layer. We got layer three,
now just click plus, I'm going to select a different
color, let's say pink. Now with this layer selected, I'm going to carry on using
my acrylic brush and just go. Everywhere. Again, we can see that now pink is
on top of purple. That's only because
our pink layer is on top of the purple layer. But the fun thing is
that you can move them if you hold down on your layer and you drag it down or up whatever
it is that you want to do. I'm going to position it
under the layer two now. It is what happens now. My purple pink, it just creates this
nice transition line. This is something you can do. This can be really helpful when you want to just add
in different elements. We can go in further, we could create another layer. I might just use
something like yellow or orange, quite this color. I might just do
some yellow here. I'm not seeing much
right now only because my purple is
on top of the yellow. But if I drag the yellow on
top, that's really bright. I get, I now get yellow
on top of purple. The last thing I want to
mention about layers is that you can change the
layers transparency. At the moment, this
is really opaque. But let's say I want it to
be a bit more translucent. I'm going to select
the layer by just tapping it with two
fingers like this. And we'll see the opacity
slider appear at the top. You can drag this
opacity slider there, I've put it to 54. And you can see how
my yellow changes. I might just leave it at 53, maybe a bit more like that. It looks a bit softer. This is how you can
change the opacity, which is a really
helpful tool to have, especially when you're
creating bark books. And we're going to
talk about it later, but I just want you to
know this feature there. We have our caligophy
layer which is hidden. I'm just going to take it now. It shows again, but because
it's right at the bottom, I can't actually see
anything because we have all of these colorful layers on top. I'm going to go ahead, hold
down on calligraphy layer. Move it all the way
up. There we go. Now it's on top of all of these, which is great and I can choose to hide or show
some of the layers. Actually really like
this version as well. I just love experimenting with it and seeing where
it takes you. It's definitely a lot of fun and you can get really,
really creative. This is how you would use layers to align your lettering or create beautiful
backgrounds like this. The possibilities are
endless, and I highly, highly recommend that you do experiment before you jump
into the next lesson, because this can be so much fun. Although it can look a
bit difficult at first, I promise it clicks and
the more you do it, it just becomes
your second nature. That's all I'm going
to cover about layers in this course. It is a beginner course, obviously there are
more things you can do. But I'm going to here and I
hope you enjoyed a tutorial.
5. Aligning your calligraphy: In this lesson, I'm going
to talk about, again, lettering alignment in a bit of a different way
than using layers. There are a few
more tools that I want to show you specifically. Let's say I'm going to
use a paper pen now. It just let us something. I'm going to do it
all in one layer. This time it's all going
to be in one layer. Let's say I'm just doing this little quote as
I would on paper. And of course, there might be some misalignment which is very normal and you might want to change a few
things on specific, certain lines or certain words might just do
something like this, you strong, and B, I'm doing it quite quickly. Just for the sake of keeping
this video fairly short. In a way, there,
it's 100% perfect. I would ideally want to move the word brave a bit
more to the left. Let's say there is this
really nice tool you can use. We're going to head here,
just next to the arrow. I'm going to click
on this icon here. And we're going to, it
looks like the letter. We're going to select this.
Now with this selected, you can actually go
ahead and use your pen. Use your pencil to draw around
the word you want to move. To actually move it, we need
to select the arrow again. Now I've drawn around it and I'm going to go
ahead and select the arrow. You can see how it's
only selects this word. And now I can either align it, move it up or down. I can resize it. It's super, super handy. I really, really love
that it's available. Now, I'm going to deselect it by clicking on
the arrow again. Yeah. If there's anything
else you would like to align, you can definitely use
this tool to do that. Let's say I wanted to do
something with this word. I'm going to draw
around it again. Click on this arrow. Just move it around and then select when
I'm happy with it. Let's say I want to do
something with a fast ward. Want to resize it a little bit? I think I do,
actually. There we go. You can also rotate it, which is super handy. It can make this a bit smaller and again center it properly. Now I can go into my layer and I can actually select
the whole layer. I've selected it
and I'm going to click on this arrow again to either it again, align it to the
center of the page. The waiting for two orange
lines to appear like this. There, there we go. We can always change
the background color as well. So many options. I'm just going to keep
it white for now. That's what I wanted to show. Have enjoyed this to till
this is just a really, really helpful tool to
know when you're trying to align your words and edit
individual part of the quote.
6. Saving your document / exporting: In this short lesson,
I'll teach you how to export your project. Let's say you've just let
this on this, a four page. You want to go ahead
and have it on your laptop or upload it
somewhere else or print it. There are a few options. You're going to go
into settings here, it's the first little icon here. There'll be an option
to share your image. You can also choose a file type, let's say PDF or Jpeg or PNG. I think these three will be like the ones
you use the most. I'd say PDFs are
great for printing. J Pegs are really good
for social media, PNG's are also really good for marketing and
things like that. But if you're creating bog books that you'll want to print, you'll definitely
want to go for PDF. Let's say I am exporting
this as a PDF. You can choose the quality here, Obviously you want to
have best quality. And here there are
a few options. So you can drop straight
to your device. I usually a drop to my laptop
and I print from my laptop. I just find it easier. You can e mail it,
you can message it. There are so many options, you can print it straight from your appropriate app.
I'm not a fan of this. Sometimes I do it sometimes
but I don't like it doesn't give you enough options
to adjust my print. In that case, I would
just save it to file. I would airdrop it to my
Macbook or your computer. But let's say you want
to save it to files. Here's my messy desktop. I want to save to download. I'm just going to click
Save just to show you if you wanted to change
the name of your file. Because let's say you're
going to do work books, you probably want to
number your pages. You want to name
them as page one, page two, page three. You can go in here into action. Then you can head to
Canva over here here. It will give you all of these. But then if you
look at the bottom, it'll say canvas information. You'll see about this artwork. And you can then rename it. If you just tap here
with your finger, you can type in
whatever you want. Let's say this is
a poster for me. I'm just going to type in
poster and then click done. Yeah, this is how we export our projects and make them ready to print or save on our devices. Just to recap, remember you
would head into Actions, which is here, and
then click on Share, and then you have
all these files. Remember to be careful
not to select layers, not to share layers if you don't want to share
individual layers. If you want to share
everything as you see on the screen head here, you'll have all these files. Then it'll be up to you how
you want to export it or where you want to send it
to or even print from here. I hope this lesson was helpful. I think it's a pretty
straightforward process in a way. I think it's a bit harder in a Derby illustrator when
it comes to these things. But just remember you
could use this to export social media graphics. You could letter something
and use it for Instagram, for example, as well to
promote your lessons. Or if you want to make like a
post to print or a leaflet, of course, you can use your apple pencil
for that as well. Yeah, this can be really handy. I hope you enjoyed this lesson.
7. Workbook Creation Part 1: In this lesson, I'll be focusing specifically on
workbook creation. Because we've covered
everything you need to know to kind of do your lettering and be able to create
your workbooks. But there are just a couple
more things I need to cover when it comes to like file sizes and things like that. So, but to create something
that you'll want to print, and obviously your workbook
will be a printable even, you know, if you sell it or if you print it for your class. Let's say we want to
make sure that we select the right
canvas settings. We're going to go ahead
and click plus icon, just like we did before when
we were creating a new file, But this time we're going to
click on this sub plus icon. So another one here that
you'll find in a corner here, you'll be able to customize your canvas fully,
which is great. I would recommend always using a four size
because it's like a standard page size that people can print
from any printer. And I'm going to select
millimeters here. I'll add in the measurement, it's 210 millimeters by 297. I can never remember. I
always need to look it up. I'll change the DPI to 300. If yours is in 300, I highly recommend having it at 300 just to ensure a
good quality print. Another important thing we
want to change is the color. You want to select CMYK because prints the color
setting we want to have. Yeah, make sure that
this is selected. And then just click
Create and you'll get this document that once you export it into PDF you'll
be perfect for printing. Yeah, that's what we
want to start creating your work book are the plan
that you could follow, starting with a warm up sheet
and doing the alphabet. Maybe doing some
connection lettuce, doing some phrases, or maybe even starting
with the short words and then doing phrases. I'll just show you
everything you need to know. But then you can create
each worksheet on your own. In because it will be so individual and you'll want it
to come from you of course. But I'll give you like a
general plan to follow that you could find just
below this lesson. Just to show you a
couple of things that might be really useful for you if you ever want
to import anything, let's say your logo, or maybe you've got
some guideline page already that you want to use. You can head into
actions here and you can insert either
a file or photo, so you could find your logo. Let's see if I can find mine. Actually, there it is. And I just click on it. And it's importing and now
I can resize it, I can drag it. You don't have to tap your actual graphic to
move it around you. You just need to
position your finger or your pencil anywhere in
the background to move it. I might just place
it into the corner. If you ever want to see your full screen and
settings out in a way, just fingers on your screen and it will make
everything disappear. And this way you can clearly see where the corner of your
page is, for example. Yeah, it's really
helpful to go back. Just tap four fingers again and you'll see
all the settings again. Right. Let's say we want
to add some text as a heading to our
page, head to action. We're going to click Add Text. And this little
keyboard will pop up. Or if you can't see, just
click here and it'll show. Let's say, make sure
you select black color. Am I just say warming up up? You always change the font. There's a lot of settings
here, you can explore. Let's say I like this
and you can always it. Just make sure uniform is selected again so we
don't stretch it, we will just center it. I want this to be quite small
on the top of the page. I'm just centering it
by dragging it around, by using my finger like this, and then select it. There we go, That looks good. We got a logo, we've
got a heading. Now let's say you want
to do some guidelines. For guidelines, you will
probably want to use a monoline brush If you
go into calligraphy, when you open your brush library and you select mono line, you probably want to
select black color. I want my brush
size to be really small here because I want
the line to be really fine. Let's create a new
layer as we continue. Is your oneline brush selected? Just go ahead and draw a line. It doesn't have to be super straight if you tap and hold at the end.
So let's do this. Again, drawing, I'm just, I'm not picking up my brush. After like half a second,
it becomes straight. Now, I'm still holding it down, just to show you one last
time. So I'm drawing a line. It doesn't need to be straight. If you just hold at the end, it creates the straight line. Now if you want to align it properly, I'm still
holding down. Just place your index finger
off your left hand on screen now you could move your line in this
intervals of 15 degrees. This is straight. I'm
quite happy with it. I'm just going to let it go. Okay? This is how you could
create some guidelines. While this brush is
still a bit thick, you can always make it smaller. Let's just start
from the beginning. Let's say I want some
guidelines here. I made sure that my
brush is quite small. I'm drawing a line
I'm holding still, holding down, placing
my index finger here. I'm just making sure that
I'm straightening my line by making sure that
it's that it's right. Um, this is the right angle. If you're not sure that
it's perfectly straight, click on this arrow here, you'll be able to see if it's
a 90 degree angle or not. You can just make
sure that it is 90 degrees and I'll just make sure that it is
perfectly straight. Let's say you want to copy
this line, head into here. Okay, let's say we're going
to select this line now. If you just swipe down
three fingers, click Copy. And then swipe down
three fingers again, and click on Paste. You'll see this
line appear on top. You just need to move it down. There we go, Move it down. And then click on this arrow again to let it go.
Now we have two lines. Let's say we wanted
another line again, I'm going to select this line. Swipe, tree fingers, cope, tree fingers down Again, paste. And there's another line. All of these are now
on separate layers. All you have to do is
pinch these layers together, these two as well. Now there will be on one layer, if you tap it with two fingers, remember you'll be able
to change the capacity. That's about the guidelines. But I'll do, just to make
it easier for you guys, I will add some guideline cheese that you can use to
import into your work. They will look
like this. You can use these for your workbooks.
I'm more than happy. I'll add this file as a PDF
and you'll be able to head here into action and
then insert a file, find it on your device
and open it up here. From here, what you want to do is probably lock this layer. We can spipe it. Lock it so we can
then work on it. Yeah, you can either draw your
own lines or you can just have something like this already imported
into your document. And you can then add
a bit of text here. You can add your logo. I'm more than happy
for you to use these lines for your
workbooks if you like. Yes, just continuing
with calligraphy. Let's say you're doing
your warm up sheet. Literally, just grab
your brush here. This is where you'll
get creative and do it as you would do it. Let's say we're
starting a new layer and you want to do some
warm up exercises. Again, I'm doing this up stroke and then I'm holding
pen at the end. It creates this perfect stroke. Let's say this will
be up strokes, then if you want
to grade them out, you can head into your layer. Remember, tap two fingers, toggle the opacity to
let's say 30 or 20. I would recommend
going lower than ten. Yeah, this will just be good for tracing if
people were to trace, Yeah, that's really handy. And even continue working
on the same layer and everything is going to be
grade out, which is great. You might just need to obviously adjust things as
you're starting shape. You might want to start
a new layer so it's easier to control
everything you can do. All of the shapes here that
people will be able to trace. All the calligraphy shapes, all the U shapes, shapes the sender sends. These lines are
quite good for that. They're fairly
good size as well. Yeah, go ahead and just
experiment really. This is the first thing
you'll probably do. Create a warm up sheet, have maybe some
elements that are black or some are grayed
out for people to trace. That will be a first page.
8. Workbook Creation Part 2: In this last lesson, I
just want to talk about the alphabet as I covered
in my master class. So you want to have
your warm up sheet, then you want to
have your alphabet. Your warm up sheet can be
really, really simple. As I said, you can just use some guidelines
you've done yourself. It's just for the sake of
not drawing them yourself. When you print a page like this, it's just super helpful to have some lines because we all know it's easier to
practice with lines. Yeah, once you
have your warm up, and it can be really simplistic, you then want to
create the alphabet. I'm going to head into plus
here to create a new file. And I'm going to custom create again. I'm going to click here. This is for print. I'm going to type in the
measurement again, so we're doing a four. You can also use
your previous page, but just hide layout. You won't have to
do this every time. I'm making sure that
this is millimeters 210.297 that's 4300 DPI. We have a color profile
selected, the CMYK. Just making sure
that everything's correct before I hit Create. Okay, Let's say we want to
do the alphabet page next. Again, I'm going to start
by naming this page. I'm going to click on Actions, and then add Add Text. This pops up, and I
might just do alphabet. If this doesn't pop up here, you need to click
on keyboard here, there you get your alphabet. I'm going to now select
it with the arrow. Now I can it. You can of course, changes. Just deselect it
now by clicking on this arrow again and then just
clicking on this as it is. It'll give me some font options, so I can click here,
change the using. Before I remember, I
might just do this. I love this fund. I use it often actually. You can even change the size, actually, to make it readable, it wants to be minimum of 12. That's like the rule in design, But I like making
it 14 or something, somewhere around there.
I will leave it there. We have our alphabet page here and you can
import your logo. Again, I'm going to head
to action inside of file, I'm going to search for my logo. I'm going to search for my
logo like my logo position. Remember? Tap four fingers. Tap four fingers so you can see the whole screen and I'm going to position
it in a corner. You don't have to
do this every time, because you can just work
with one file and then hide its layers when you're
creating a different page. But just for the sake
of it, I'll show you. Tap fingers again to bring
me back to this page. There we go, I have a heading. I've got my logo here. Now I'm just thinking about
the guidelines for alphabet. Actually, you don't need guidelines if you
are able to draw, if you are able to letter
in like a straight line, but maybe you do want
to have one line. Might just head into brushes and select caligraphy and
monoline brush again, make sure that its
size is very small, maybe 4% I remember how
we were drawing lines. Let's create a new layer. This will help us to have it separately from
everything else. I've got my monoline brush selected and I'm just going
to draw a simple line. Remember it doesn't have
to be super straight. But we're tapping and holding. I'm going to do it
again. A little glitchy. I'm tapping and holding
and it becomes straight. I'm doing a line, I'm
tapping and holding, and it becomes straight. I'm going to put my
index finger down. I might make it a bit longer. That looks good, but now I'm going to select
this layer and tap two fingers to
change its opacity. 214, let's say. I just want to check that it is 90% is perfectly straight. Sometimes it actually
doesn't look straight. If it says that it's 90% it will be straight on your page. You can check that by
selecting the arrow here and just using this
green circle moved around. Now I'm going to create
a new layer again. I'm going to start doing
calligraphy on this layer. I'm going to go ahead and
select my calligraphy brush, which is calligraphy,
my calligraphy brush. Make sure I got black
color selected. You can start doing
your alphabet here. I'll just use this line as a baseline and that's all
you need pretty much. Or as I said, you might
make it a bit bigger. You don't to have any
guidelines for alphabet. I didn't when I taught
my first class. I'm just going to do depending on what it is that
you're teaching. If it's brush lettering, you want this to be thicker. If it's dip pen calligraphy, you want this to be thinner. Let's say this is for dip pen. I'm just doing each letter, My brush looks similar now
to the nib I'll be using. Let's say I've
done the letter A. And then also add in some lines. You could show that this is an upstroke and this is a downstroke. And
people love that. I find sometimes
they can find it hard to see which
direction they need to go. Doing like some lines around
your letters might be nice. Sometimes if your screen moves, you can just tap it
with two fingers. You can move it, you can zoom out, or you can make it bigger. But if you just do this
like pinching motion, it will jump back
at being straight. I find it annoying.
Sometimes may happens, I might do the letter
B for example, and then do the same thing. I'm not going to do
the whole alphabet, but you get the idea, this is how I would do it. I think I need to position the text layer a bit higher up. That is better. My screen
moved a little bit. If you want to see
the whole screen, remember four fingers, then you'll be able
to see it properly. There are a lot of commands and it might look like I'm doing
everything really quickly. But I just want you
to cancel. I'm sorry. I need to stop my four
fingers back so I can see everything I'm
marking in this layer. There we go. You might take a bit of time to get
familiar with everything. You might need to
watch these tutorials more than maybe you'll find it. I'm saying something quickly. It's only because I'm not
trying to be too quick. It's just it does become second nature
the more you do it. I'll be honest, I have not
been using ipad for that long. I only bought it around
Christmas, I think. Well, now now it's only March
because my laptop broke. I had to procreate and I had to use ipad for all
my designing needs, for all my workbook creation, for everything I have
been using this only because I had to
learn really quickly and I found it really
hard at fast as well. But now it's just
become so much easier. And again, I'm sharing
all the things you need to know
for calligraphy, but there are so
many more options and things you could do on it. Yeah, that's just good
to know. Let's say I finished my first line. I'm only going to show
you the first line. I'm just doing each letter as I normally wrote in calligraphy. Just imagining that I'm
doing it on paper lines. I'm not being very accurate here, but you can
take your time, of course, to make
them nice and neat. But it is helpful to have
this line, isn't it? I do think it's
definitely helpful. Let's say I've done
this first line now, it's all in one layer so
I can hide it or show it. But remember we want
it to be grayed out. I'm going to tap two fingers, and I'm going to slide
this to 920, Let's say. There it is now. Now
I can select it all. I can center it a bit more. I can maybe make
it a bit smaller. I'm just clicked on this arrow and the selected
again. And that's it. You can just continue
doing this again, create a new layer, you
can draw a new line. Or you can copy this one by
heading to the line layer. Let's just do that
actually, line layers here. I'm going to remember,
three fingers down. Now I'm going to head into my new layer that I've created. Three fingers down, Paste. Now if I click on here, it created it on top. I need to drag it down. I could do my next
line somewhere here. You might need to do
two pages or three. If you can fit a alphabet
here, that's great. Maybe you want to do
upper case or lower case. Suddenly I just need to make this layer a bit
more transparent. So two fingers drag in the opacity again to
whatever it was, 20 or 20. There we go. This is it. Carry on like this, and
that's all you need to know. And then you can create your
letter connection worksheet. You can also letter
a few words and make them grade out for
people to practice. You can also do a few phrases. If you're teaching a seasonal
class you want to do like Merry Christmas or
Happy Holidays, you can just letter
those phrases, print a worksheet for them to trace before they
do it on a card. There we go guys. I hope you
enjoy these tutorial series. I hope they have been helpful. As I said, feel free to re, watch them as many times as you need until you feel
like it clicks. If something doesn't work
out the fast time you try just now that that
was the case for me too. And I very often had to
like tried a few times, all of these comments as well. Sometimes I will get frustrated because something didn't work, but it's only been a few months. And now I'm feeling really
confident about ing procreate. So I believe that it can
be the same for you. So good luck with everything. Enjoy the process and please
let me know how you get on. And if you have any questions, drop a comment or e mail me. I'm always happy to help.
Take care everybody.
