1. Welcome - A Podcasting Masterclass: Hey everyone and welcome to my skill share class. I'm Dylan, I'm a YouTube it with 43 thousand subscribers. And off the side of that, I run two successful podcasts. And now I completely understand how hard it is to go from not having a podcast that creating one. And in today's class I'm going to be teaching you all about how to record a podcast, how to edit a podcast, how to get it up and running online, how to build an audience, what equipment you need. And it's just going to be great for anybody who wants to start a podcast. And trust me, running a podcast is very fun. You learn lots. My podcast is currently called the in my twenties podcast. I'm so dependent on my phone from my work, my communication for arranging stuff. And I just feel like it's gonna take Overland. My brain is just so come tuned by electronics and technology. And you know, it's so funny because I basically talk about everything relevant to being in my twenties. I got my friends on, I guess special guests on and is currently going really well. So I do want to share some of that knowledge that I've gained from doing my own podcast and the insights in the stuff I'd wish I know that the star before I made the podcast, I want to share that with you now so you guys get a headstart. So if you do enjoy this clause, please do leave a review and without further ado, let's jump into class one. 2. Choosing your Podcasting Topic: Close one, choosing a topic. Now, the topic of your podcasts can literally be very ambiguous. It could be a random chat with friends. It could be signed specific, it could be age specific, it could be industry-specific. There's so many different factors that you have to account for when choosing your podcast topic. And the main thing that I did was I realized the people that I can relate to most of the people who are of the same age as me. So people in their twenties, because when you're young you have the same ambitions, you have the same sort of drive, the same interests as such. And I figured if I could really tap into that and get my friends on board with that, we could just share our experiences we could give of use, which are likely going to be similar to other people's views of our age and make it really connect with them. So when I chose my topic for my podcast, I've really focused on relatability of my kind of pre engaged audience from YouTube. And then the, the, the reliability of the podcast with that considering the age demographic. Now, the reason why I did this is because if you have something that's very relatable to a group of people, the likelihood is they're going to be more engaged with what you're saying and start following the podcast. Whereas if it wasn't relatable and I was just doing dotted random topics here and there and here and there. People who follow my podcast and listen to it, they might think it's a great podcast, but they wouldn't know what to expect from future episodes so they might not follow it. Whereas if they know the other content's gonna be relatable and about similar stuff to what we're talking about in our daily lives. They're going to follow that podcast and subsequently be engaged with it and enjoy it. That's the strategy I took. Now there's several podcasts which are very random, which are very funny, and that's how they draw people in. And there's no secret formula to determining the correct podcast topic is something that you have to think about, sleep on and truly fail. What could I keep talking about? An engaging, passionate way week after week after week after week. Some people that can be anything and other people that could be just relatable stuff. 3. The Best Podcasting Equipment: Class to the equipment you're going to need to slow your podcasts. Now, I feel is if the key things for your podcast is a good microphone, there's no point in my opinion, starting a podcast when you don't have a good microphone. So right here, I've got this microphone here, which is a road NT USB, and it's a very good start a microphone for starting a podcast. And the stand is also a great stamp for podcasts because Eclipse onto desk drawer amount. And then you can literally move it around like so. And it's really good for comfort and speaking into like disks. I don't have to lean forward, I don't have to lean back. So the most important equipment you're going to need to starting your podcast, a good microphone and a good Stan, making your guest or yourself or comfortable in a podcast with a great stand is honestly very valuable. And secondly, a podcast is all audio. And for that reason, if your audio isn't good enough, people just straight up bone listened to it. Now, other equipment you're likely going to need is a toll on your computer like GarageBand, which comes pre-installed max, or any sorts of audio music editing software. So the ones you record, the two video channels of your microphone and audio, you can kind of piece them together and then put them in podcast format and export them. We're gonna talk about that later on. But yes, so you need some sort of software on Windows or computer just to edit the audio, you can get o Udacity. I like doing it in GarageBand, but that's used to chuck out and you can get lots of free ones online. I would definitely recommend investing in a tripod and or a camera just so you can record the whole podcast setup like law say Joe Rogan or in this case. And you can export the highlight clips to YouTube, to Instagram. And it really does well to promote everything you've done in your podcast. And finally, you just need a nice table so that you and your guest or you yourself can, can kinda lean on, be comfortable per drinks, on having a few drinks around for the podcast is great. Just all stuff that makes you feel relaxed and comfortable so that you have a natural, very natural chat. And that is the only equipment you'll need to style your podcast. 4. The Set Up...: Class three, the setup. Now in this class we are going to be talking about how you can set up your podcast in your room. Now I'm gonna roll the clip right now from my podcast, which is basically in my room and my top room. And you can see the MIS sets up. We've got two microphones and a camera is able to capture us both. My desk speaking about the topic. Now the camera setup here is so great because it's very minimal in terms of editing, because I've got both of us in one shot. Now when you start Are your podcast, you really are going to have loads of time to edit the videos as well as the audio. So really having a one-shot, both of you in the intake is a great way I find to create video from your podcast. Now to achieve this, I mean, it's fairly self-explanatory, or you have to do is set up a camera on a tripod in the back of your room and have a look at the screen on the camera to see if both you and your friend are in the shot. Now, also the thing that makes the show quite interesting is you can see in the background I've got a whiteboard, a picture, some fairy lights. They're just kind of give that bit of added color to the video. And I've made sure that both me and my friends, you can at least see half of offices. No one is turned away and we're both facing each other to the point where you can kind of see our faces and our dialect, and we can see each other at the same time. This was just a very quick bonus class I wanted to add in, but let's move on to the next class, the Meta classes. 5. How to be a GOOD Podcast Hoster!: Alright, so welcome to class for this one is all about Holocaust hosting. Now there's a few things that you can do in terms of hosting your podcast to become better hosted and to give an all-round better experience to the listener. Now, obviously, during our earlier classes, we talked about how making your guests than yourself feel relaxed by having a table, by having a stat, but having a good microphone, but having drinks is really a great thing to do. But in times of your podcast itself, there's a few rules you can say to your guest and a few rules to abide by yourself before you start the podcasts. Now, this is just the help is flow very smoothly. And if you watch the lights of the podcast, goats like Joe Rogan, they're very good at doing this. So firstly, listening and waiting in a podcast, The worst thing you can do is consistently interrupt each other. You really have to let people finish their sentences and you really have to make sure that you don't try and talk over each other. Because as soon as you do that, the flow is gone. So it's worth and I always thank my guests. Alright. Yeah, just make sure we don't talk over each other, less each give each other time to speak. And after a while, after the first ten minutes you get to a natural rhythm and is really good. And secondly, as a host, you always want to have a certain amount of topics on a piece of paper just in case the natural conversation falls flat. And you can always defer and go back to these topics on the paper. And then the conversation sparks up again, making sure you're super far away from the mike because you're super far away from the mike, the quality of the order is going to be a lot less life on this, the quality is not as good, but if I come a bit closer, the quality is better. And the same applies for a podcast. Being close to the mike is a lot better than being further away. It really does capture the detail in the voice. Another thing that I find really helpful when hosting a podcast is to, you know, just have a think about the night before, how you want it to go, what you want to talk about, what's the style? Is there any burning questions or sensitive topics, et cetera, et cetera. And really if you want to laugh in the podcast, is something love, don't feel constricted to. I've got to be an interviewer. I've gotta do this. I'm going to do that with a relaxed and chill out. 6. How to Record your Podcast (KEY!!): Welcome to class five. Now this is where it's going to get a bit more technical because we're going to talk about setting up in GarageBand ready to record your podcast. Now obviously, and other programs that will be similar, but it might not be the same. But for now I'm just gonna give carriage bandits and example. And it's a roughly similar process for any other podcast recording softwares. Now once you've got your two mikes, obviously, there'll be two leaflet plug-in to each of the mikes. You plug them in, and then you plug the other end in from your mind to your computer via USB. And you can see here this is my lonely for the one right here. So once you plug in, let's say your leads and TOO mikes and your pizza. Your computer will recognize that there's two microphones connected to your computer. And today I'm going to be showing you how you can set up GarageBand to record your podcast and how to record two microphones or once in GarageBand. Firstly going open garage band right here as you can see. And so once you've opened GarageBand issue come up saying choose an empty projects. We want to select, choose an empty project. And then it will bring up this menu on screen right now. And you can see that there's plenty of different options here. And assuming you've got both of your microphones connected to your computer, which you should by now, you then want Hicks command and Spacebar on a Mac and such. Now this will bring up the audio and midi setup, and you want to double-click on the audio Amity sat midi Setup. And then I will bring up this menu right here. Now, there's lots of Copenhagen combined menu, but, and you also probably a lot clearer by essentially what you want to do. And what I would do is scroll down press plus creates aggregate device. This will bring up a new one here. Let's call it, I'll call it YouTube or two mikes. And we want to take our two microphones that are currently plugged in to our computer on this menu right here. So both of my microphones are rodent, USB and you can see and you can see that the only road NT USB microphones with an input which is IN this one right here, and this one right here. So once I've selected these to, I'm done with this menu. I'm now going to leave it. And essentially what will happen is on GarageBand oh, popup saying, do you want to use the audio device YouTube to mix? And you want to say use, and you want to say use again, and it will finish. And what it will do is we'll initialize the core audio. Here. My instrument is connected with to U22 mikes. And if it doesn't do this automatically, basically just changed the input device manually like so. And your menu will pop up here. And then once again, you want to make sure this is selected on input 12, not just one, not just two. And then we want to go ahead and create, record a microphone or input and press Create. Now once this menu comes up, we want to make sure we create another audio channel because each audio channel is represented by different mike. And you can see for one, we have the top unless I will select YouTube to Mike's wants to. And for the Sakmann who selects you shoot, to mix three to four. And now we're basically, they are both Mises said out, but however, they're not recording at the same time. So what you need to do is basically the very top I know you can see on my screen, but there's GarageBand menu. You want to press track and then show track composition or configure track header right here is the track configure track header. And then we want to select Recording enabled and now pop up on the screen. And then we now want suppressed the Shift key, which is the output arrow. Click on the fast record, click on the second record. And now both channels are going to be recording if and when you hit the record button. And then you can start record both channels recording. We have one like one like here, you can see that they're both different. And you can see that both of them are according, both of them recording at different levels. And boom, you're ready to start recording a podcast. Once it's done, you suddenly hit pause. So to recap so far, we've talked about the equipment you're going to need, how to be a good host, how to set up the podcasts very nicely. And now we know how to start recording in GarageBand, ready for the actual podcast. 7. Editing your Podcast! (KEY!!): Welcome to class six. Now in last class we talked all about how to get to the point where you're ready to record in Garage Band or some other software, your podcast. And in this class we're going to talk about recording it and then editing it subsequently to make it flow very nicely. Or if there's anything you need to take out the podcast just so you don't get in trouble essay. So to record, once you've done what we discussed in last episode, you literally click the record button and you then you're off and going, you're recording, you're speaking for the whole essay 40 minutes to an hour. And then you press the stop button and then you'll see the along a tube audio channels. There's a massive audio file to audio files. And that is your podcast. Once you've recorded a podcast, if there's anything you want to take out, 70 Got To Get You want to take out, right-click on air on both audio channels and then trim that section that you want out of the podcast. And then drag and drop the two new audio channels back to where to fill the gap, essentially. And then you may want to adjust the volume of the audio channels within your podcasts or you can do, you can see the control menus open right here. You can play around with that to get a nicer sound if you'd like that. And you can also go up to you on the left bar next to the audio one and audio to an increase the volume upto six deaths MOOC decimal gain. And you can do that for both channels or you can lower your next steps. It just play around and yet it with the audio to make it sound crisp, To make it sound clean, to get the volumes of both the speakers. And that is truly how you edit the podcast. I know it sounds very simple because it is. Holocausts are great and simple. Also, it's worth noting that it is key to trim both audio files. Noticed one of them, because if you just trim one of them, then you audio and podcasts will become out of sync later on. So then you have two different voices talking at different times. So make sure you follow exactly what I did in today's video, in today's class and trim both of the audio files exactly the same. Trust me. Trust me. I saw it at the end of this video because I've got to say it during the class. And yeah, thank you. Keep watching. You're doing great. 8. Adding Intro&Outro Music + Exporting your Podcast!! : Welcome to class seven. In this class we're gonna be talking about adding some introductory music to your podcast. Just a view as goat up. Oh, is this person's podcast stores this podcast because I recognize that intro music. So what you can do is go and find some or crazy random drumbeat or go on YouTube and find a no copyright intro track. And you can, assuming that it's all right to use that, download it and then add it into your podcasts at the very start. Like so as I'm doing on screen right now, adding an intro and outro music is really great, in my opinion for satisfying as your podcast. And it really is a simple thing to do that's a lot of value to the podcast, as well as the music having a sort of thing where you go. And ladies and gents, where live. Welcome back to the in my twenties podcasts. Really having a signature sort of intro, I think is very identifiable as well along with the music. So it's really a great combo to have unique intro music. And unique intro was plus. And then in the edit to export your whole podcast, once you've made the changes, you literally head over to the Share menu at the top of the screen, click Export song to disk. Even as a podcast song is fine. And then just choose the.mp3 or.wav format, export it. And then it's a file on your desktop and you're ready to upload it. So all these distribution sites filling a Georgia I'm feeling loose after that run. Yeah. So we just did a six kilometer run and we both got probably I'd say close to our personal bests coming in at 23 minutes and nine seconds for a 5K and then about a seven minute, 26 or 23 minute miles. So it's a pretty good day and where I'm yes, I'm joined by a good friend of mine, georgie, Welcome back to the in my twenties podcast. We basically come on here and talk about all things to do with being in our twenties because we're 20. 9. How to put your Podcast on Spotify & Apple Music etc: Welcome to Class a, the most important class, in my opinion. Now, this one is all about how to distribute your podcast to Spotify Apple podcasts, these all of these different sites. Now, this is a very, very simple but hard to discover process. So that's why I'm going to basically tell you exactly what to do in this class. Now once you've got your audio file, what you want to do is to go on a website like anchor, which is a podcast distributor, and upload your files and follow every single step that they give you on Anquetil FM.com. Now, literally the way it works and the way you get your podcast online is you simply sign up to a site like Anka, upload your files and you put in the title, the description, the tags, and explain your podcasts. And they literally do all of the work for you. And it's such a great tool. Now there are several different podcast host is out there. But the reason why anchor is the best for when you're starting out is because it's free. They charge no fees. You'll find a lot of other podcast host is, it's free for the first few episodes, but then you have to start paying, or you have to pay from the very young. And for this, getting your podcast out there to begin with and start growing your podcasts and get your friends and people around you to listen to it. You don't want to be paying money because it's not going to be earning you money. So really starting our uploading your podcast on anchor is the best way to go about it now, could walk you through the title in the description process, but essentially so Podcast specific that I'm better off showing you the website and then you following the steps. That's literally how you get your podcast on line. 10. Podcast and Audience Growth Strategy 1: Welcome to class nine. Now, class nine is gonna be all about how you can start to develop and grow an audience for your podcasts. Now, obviously in the previous episodes, I've kind of talked to you about how you can go from no having a podcast to starting one, creating one editing here, being a good host, and then uploading it. But now is where the hardest work comes in and hard work and my advice is really going to help you. Now, the thing with Spotify and Apple podcasts, you don't really discover new podcasts, that it's not a search engine is where you go to, in my opinion, find your favorite podcast and listen to it. So really just putting them online on Spotify and Apple podcasts, you really struggled to grow your podcasts and built up an audience. However, one should I'm promoting it to your friends and family. Putting the highlight clips of your podcast on YouTube, which is a search engine, will really help you develop and grow your podcast. So for example, with my podcast, I put all the funny highlights on my second channel on YouTube, which subsequently you start getting about 80 views on this highlight clip. And people are so intrigued to see what the full podcast is light because the highlight clips, the best bit of your podcast and people are like, well, I really enjoyed that highlight clip. Let me go listen to the full podcast and suddenly your audience size starts to grow so you can see them recently. I've talked about pirates are real threats. A cruise ships technology in 2020 means you don't have to walk what daily life on a cruise ship is like. And then the highlights that I chose for my friends, for my podcast with James to upload to my channel to help intrigued people who watch my listened to my full podcast. And you see, people would search for what daily life is like on a cruise ship. And they would come across my video and be like, oh, I want to know more about crucial because that's what I'm searching for and YouTube. And they would subsequently go and click the link in my description to my podcast, really generating traffic on YouTube, your podcast, in my opinion, It's such a great way to grow. And that is why I talked about setting up a camera and the side of the room to film your, your, your podcasts so that when you come to uploading as YouTube, you have good audio and you have good visuals. And other key thing about podcasts is that in times of growing your audience, you really have to make sure that once you get somebody to become part of your audience, you have to make them stay. And the way to make them stay is to basically constantly push our quality content and to listen to any suggestions that people may have in the comments. And that is Podcast growth strategy one. 11. Podcast and Audience Growth Strategy 2: Welcome to class ten, podcast growth strategy to, in last class we talked about growing through the search engine of YouTube. And in this class we're going to talk about growing through social media, the likes of Instagram, Facebook, Twitter. I made a whole class dedicated to social media, Instagram, Twitter and editing videos all sketch on my channel if you're interested in, you're still here, essentially on here. Skill Share platform growing through social media is also great because your friends are really going to listen and want to hear about what you've got to say. So by promoting, let say, your new podcast episode on, on an Instagram story and then leaving a link to it in your bio is a great thing to do because your friends will be intrigued. And then subsequently they'll go and click the link in the bio and your podcast will start to grow. It's the same with Facebook. If you post a status about, I've started up this new podcast. I've got a Facebook page for now. I'm going to put my podcast link on the Facebook page and funny clips on the Facebook page. Get all my friends, the light, the Facebook page get into shared Eclipse, really using social media to build up traffic for your podcast is another great growth strategy. If you have any friends who have got a large following on Instagram, on Facebook, on YouTube. Really try and get them on your podcast because they've already got a small name for themselves. And when you do post about your podcasts with their face on social media, people are gonna be intrigued and want to click on to podcast. So really another growth strategy is really racking your brain for who you know, who could come on the podcast. And then ensuring that when you promote your podcast on the social media sites, use their name, Ukrainian engaging posts, and you get your friends to like and, and share the post by the end of the day. A good podcast with quality content is the key feature and the main thing that will sell your podcast. 12. Branding and Marketing: Welcome to class 11 branding. So when it comes to branding your podcast, in terms of titles, name of the podcast image for the podcast, I'll pop up my image on screen right now, and you can see that the image, my podcast basically says, well, my podcast, it's about a sprite, is a bit funky. It says it's a podcast, it's got a mic. It's got to him, my twenties. So straight away, you know, there's a young podcasts for people in their twenties. And it's got a bit of a funky by the edge to it because of the photo. So I'd really say when you're deciding what you want to cover image of your podcast to be. Really think about your podcasts in general, I definitely recommend getting an image that relates to your podcasts, whether it be yourself or something your podcast is about. And having the name of the podcast within the image is great. Please do that. It really helps people understand. And once you click on your podcast and make sure it doesn't look too tacky, and make sure it looks professional so that when people discover your podcast, they enjoy looking at the image while they're listening to it. And that image on the, on the screen really has to tell them something about you and the podcast. And obviously once again, there's no secret formula, but just a few elements to think about when you're doing it. Now when you start your own podcast, you'll have to give you a podcast and name. And we discussed that in previous episodes. You'll also have to give a podcast description. Now what this means is that whatever is in your description, if people are searching for, let's say, a podcast about being a young adult in their twenties, then my podcast would come up. So basically, what you wanna do is you want to label your podcasts description as an exact explanation of what your podcast is about. So I'm saying I'm living my twenties to the max. I'm I'm talking about young adult things with young adults, which I'm kind of my friends. And there's nine is the shorter meaning. So it's very concise and short. And you'd wanna do the same as the explaining what your podcast is about. Now when it comes to each individual episode, once again, you really want to talk to them in a way that's going to draw viewers in and explain what the episode is about. While also thinking about what view is going to be searching for our generation's future. And then it's a rough idea overall, topic discussion of what we're talking about in this episode. And then I've narrowed it down to working from home, Space Mining and influences. So I've got three little small subsections that I've used in this episode and I've put them in and title.
