Plein Air & Urban Watercolor Artist

Teacher

Hi, I'm Efe Arabaci -- an award-winning watercolor artist and plein air painter based in Oslo, Norway.

I love painting cities the way we experience them in real life: through changing light, shadows, atmosphere, people, and those small moments that make a street feel alive.

My work has been exhibited internationally, including a selection for the American Watercolor Society (AWS) International Exhibition.

But my goal here isn't just to show you my paintings -- it's to show you how I make them.

I believe watercolor doesn't have to be intimidating. In my Skillshare classes, I break down complex subjects into simple, practical steps so you can understand why a painting works, not just copy what I'm doing.

1. Introduction and Class Project: Come to class. I am a an urban and finer Mocolor artist based in Norway. My work has been exhibited internationally, including with prestigious organizations like the American Motor Cult Society. In this class, we are taking our precious authors for an authentic tenner experience. This entire lesson was recorded live on location at Kovzabta along the Oso pio. Painting planaries where my philosophy through the shines. It's all about spontaneity, but also some planning, fast and loose pressure, and capturing the fleeting mood of nature rather than or thinking the details. Everything from the rich green orange to subtle both reflection was painted right on the spot. In this class, you will learn how to approach a complex natural landscape on location or from a reference. We will cover how to simplify dense foliage into big value shapes, how to paint soft water reflections, and how to use dry brush and splatter techniques to add texture and life to your shoreline. For your class project, you would paint your own version of this coastal scene. You can paint along with me using the Osa footage or take your easel aside and paint a local spot near you and focus on lose brushwork and capturing the atmosphere. Once finished, upload your painting and any field sketches to the project call below for personalized feedback. All three resources, including high resolution reference pot of from Copa Bukta and finish painting are in the resources tab below. For more daily ten year studies and life process videos, how you Instagram F RBG At. Let's now head outside and start painting. 2. Material: We have sponge here. This is basically to take my water from my brushes. We have some water spray, and there's taking some kind of to show off the first layer of the painting during the second layer. So I have some weasel, square hair brushes, and some synthetic hair. S hair brushes for detail. This is my palette. No need to talk about every paint here, but let's talk about the paints that I will use. So sorry, Cadman orange, yellow walker, sepia, burn tamber. This is burn Sienna. So we have dentrmblue, cobot blue, and lavender. This will be paints that we will use. Maybe we will not use most of them, but this is our plan now for sure we have here a bit cadmium yellow. Paper is arches, 300 crown. 3. Drawing: Okay. Let's draw. I have a light drawing here, but I will make it stronger now, but let's talk about this planning of the painting. So as you see, there is a light sky, kind of, we can maybe use lavender cobble blue and beautiful clouds. We can just suggest a few clouds as well. So in the background, there are some trees and maybe we can and use some cold greens. Then after that, on the left side, we have a foliage. I will suggest some bright yellow the first layer. And then you see this is foreground. Let's make it stronger now. This is foliage on the left. And then this is a tree. There's a tree here, but I will not show all of them. So the background, I am changing it a bit, like a diagonal, you know, you see. So this is water. This part is water. This is a kind of path. Maybe we can suggest some gray here. Okay. So here people are sting so on, but I will not put any people here, just kind of sand. Then even though there is no bot here, I will put a bot here and this will be our focal point. Actually, there's always a bot here, but today we don't have it. So I will just imagine and throw. This will be our focal point. 4. First Wash: So we moved a bit undersand because there was some shadow and light part from the tree on our paper. So this is better for you to see what I'm doing. So we'll start with some water on the sky. Then after that, I will make some cloths wet on wet. I am coming under this background trees. So I want some cobalt blue and lavender. More cobalt blue. David songs in it. So then just touch on the sponge and start. I'm just going around this glass. Okay. Maybe one here and one here, and maybe then one. Just some small clots here as well. Then it's come. Okay. Then now more dense, more lavender and c orange. But this time is stronger. But this is too much. Then touch a sponge, then I don't have much water. Then just under the cloths, some grase S? Here and here. And then here's a Yeah. So our sky is done. Now lavender and it from Sienna. I will suggest some pecram here. The first wash more so then we can now introduce some cadillloTuch of cobalt blue and lavender as well. This is our first layer. Now, I am also painting this foliage on the left. Again, this is more cad yellow and a bit cobalt blue. Yeah. So now I add a bit sperm sienna to the mix and mark cover blue. This should be stronger because the second wash, we are not planning to touch the foreground. Maybe just a bit maybe just a bit shadow on me. Here Let's have it spray. And before it's gone, let's put This is just warm gray. Mix of cobalt blue and burns. I need to quicker because sun is directly on the paper and straying very quickly. So that's why I am using spray bottle a lot. This is basically footpath. So since it is still damp, I need to darken the bottom side to have some depth. Closer to us should be darker like this. Maybe they water splat. Let's some texture and maybe a bit watery venter but this is not lavender, this one. So the first layer is done. 5. Second Wash: So let's start for the second layer. So this is lavender, such as some buildings in the background. So I am mixing Cboblue and cad yellow for the background trees, but it should be a bit cooler. Start now. We need to leave some greens as well. So maybe then leave this white and this green underneath. With this, we need to do that a bit abstract way. Um, So now I am adding Indian trim blue to make it maybe here, cat yellow, covered blue, and Indian trim blue. This is this is dark green, so I will use it for the bottom of the background trees here. Skin the eye. A um when we get to the bottom, we should make it a bit stronger. So that's why I'm using this indian tremble. So now what's important that this part, we should keep some first layer of greens like we did here. So the weather now is overcast. We cannot change our plan, so we will keep what we have started. Sunny day. Now, we are getting the foliage on the left. So what we are going to do we keep this apart like this. Maybe you can also connect a bit like this. Yeah. We don't want to dry very quickly because we have work here. So this is light, very light. It should be much darker. So then we are now using indention blue, even maybe burn timber and cat yellow a bit. We need to make it darker here. Yeah. Much more darker. Like ann Blue Lantern blue touch of Kent Yellow, much darker. It's spray a bit. Yeah. I think I should make it much more darker. I am using also a bit sepia and from blue. So just bot more. Yeah, like this. Maybe like this. Yeah. So maybe we can also suggest some, shadow. I already have dendrimblue here. I put a bit pearl maroon. You can use Alizarin crimson. That should be cooler. I like this. 6. Texture: So to have some texture, let's water splash and also maybe, suggest maybe a few flowers. And also maybe even some yellow, yellow, cut yellow directly from the tube. See, even maybe pairing a maroon directly. Also, let's do the same for the foreground. To suggest some rocks and things like that. No. Some of them big like this. Maybe. Some of them is big. Especially in the foreground. Again, maybe get your love directly from the tip just splash. Lastly, maybe we can soften some edges here. Some peeling a maroon. By flowers. Mixing natromblan sepia. So now time for the very abstract way of tree. Like this. Then quickly. Get yellow, pa blue. Dry brush. But we need to keep this first layer off. Green. Just dry brush. But don't touch everywhere. Not all of them. Maybe it's stronger. Which part should be stronger. Mm. Yeah. This part is done. 7. Water and Boat: So now for water, I will use lavender, but here there was some bunsen and cobaonson. So let's say this is called gray. My intention here is to have some sparkle on the water close to the boat. So it will enhance our focal point. But that's part we can put all the way. So spray. And maybe darker close to the bottom. As we need to and use some green graze. Yeah. So now we will paint the boat. Well, this is a mix of cobot Blon Bncena let's say this is called gray. So yeah. Like this. This part, let's soften the edge this. Then we need to dark it a bit for the bottom of this bot. I added dentin blue. Now directly, we will do this reflection. So we need to leave some words. And then it will be muscles and this as well. So this part, maybe we can make a lavender. Practice. Then this is time for the mass. This should be a bit dark sepia. And then this Since we painted as part as Lavender, let's put it Lavender ear to suggest. Mm 8. Details: But this is cadmium orange. We will use it for our boat to have more interest. Maybe more. So that's some mass, but should be stronger. Sienna and dentrnblue sepia maybe with Yeah. So then also, we can put some turks also here, maybe some boats and some, maybe even some affections. Just some tucks. So this is white quash. We will make some highlights. Some things here, you know, And there taste like this. And also, we have this part and this shining, let's say, this part also shining this part is some shining masses. You know, so maybe there was a building here. Maybe this is a roof, you know. I'm not afraid of putting some highlights here since this is our focal point. Maybe one more here. Maybe maybe some reflections as well. Just some splushesF trees. Much more. 9. Signature and Final Talk: Painting is ready, so I just need to sign it, then we will take the tape off. So time to take your tape off. This is, you know, this tape has a function of passpartu. So when you take it off, then you are able to see the painting better. So this is the final result. So we have come to end of this session. So you see now we have a sunshine, but 1 minute ago, we didn't have it. So that's why we have to keep our mind from the beginning. Should be the same always. So what we have done here, like light wash of sky clouds and in the background, some cooler greens. And after that, we kept you see some first layer of greens. Here, here, here, here. Then after that, we come to the left part foliage. We kept the screen as well. Then we darken it up. After that, we splash water and some opaque watercolors. Then also splashing foreground to have some texture like rugs and anything flowers. This a path. After that, we have this wash on the water. We left some white marks here, and then we painted the spot. The fictions and at the same. Then after that, the masses, then some dark parts in the background, you see. Then some highlights. That's all. I hope I hope you like our session today, and I hope to see you next time. 10. See you again!: Congrats on finishing this plenary session.
