About This Class
Mastering Loose Figures for Urban Watercolor: Paint People, Cars & Rain
Have you ever felt intimidated by adding people, vehicles, or atmospheric conditions to your watercolor streetscapes? Getting bogged down in precise anatomical details often stifles the energy and movement of a vibrant city scene.
In this class, you’ll learn how to break away from complex details and embrace loose, simplified fundamentals to capture dynamic figures, umbrellas, cars, and motorbikes with confidence—all built around the Key Approach explained step-by-step throughout the lessons.
What You Will Learn:
-
The Key Approach to Simplification: My core method for reducing complex human anatomy into bold, expressive watercolor shapes.
-
Capturing Vehicles & Motion: Easy, structured techniques for painting cars, motorbikes, and wet-street reflections.
-
Fluid Brushwork: Applying single-pass strokes and managing wet-on-wet/wet-on-dry edges for a painterly feel.
-
Integration: How to seamlessly place people and elements into a streetscape so they feel part of the environment, not pasted on.
Who This Class Is For:
This course is suitable for intermediate watercolor artists, urban sketchers, and enthusiastic beginners who want to move away from overly detailed drawing toward a loose, painterly style. No prior knowledge of complex human anatomy is required!
Materials Needed:
-
Standard watercolor paper (100% cotton recommended)
-
A basic set of watercolor paints
-
Medium and small round brushes
-
Water container
Meet Your Teacher
Hi, I'm Efe Arabaci -- an award-winning watercolor artist and plein air painter based in Oslo, Norway.
I love painting cities the way we experience them in real life: through changing light, shadows, atmosphere, people, and those small moments that make a street feel alive.
My work has been exhibited internationally, including a selection for the American Watercolor Society (AWS) International Exhibition.
But my goal here isn't just to show you my paintings -- it's to show you how I make them.
I believe watercolor doesn't have to be intimidating. In my Skillshare classes, I break down complex subjects into simple, practical steps so you can understand why a painting works, not just copy what I'm doing.

Hands-on Class Project
Your Project: Paint a Dynamic Urban Scene Element Using the Key Approach
Put your new skills into practice by painting a loose urban micro-scene featuring at least two key elements covered in class (e.g., a pedestrian holding an umbrella next to a moving car or motorbike).
How to Complete Your Project:
-
Pick a Reference: Choose a busy urban street photo—either your own or one of the free reference photos provided in the Resources tab.
-
Apply the Key Approach: Sketch the main figures and vehicles using minimal structural lines. Focus on proportion, silhouette, and movement rather than small details.
-
Apply Bold Washes: Paint your figures and vehicles using loose, confident brushstrokes based on the lesson fundamentals. Remember: let the watercolor flow and keep your edges soft where needed!
-
Share Your Work: Upload a photo of your finished study (or your step-by-step progress) to the Project Gallery below.
What to Include in Your Submission:
-
A brief note on how applying the Key Approach helped simplify your painting process.
-
A photo of your final piece.
I’ll be dropping by the Project Gallery to provide feedback and answer any questions. I can’t wait to see your loose streetscape elements!
