1. Welcome & Class Overview: And Hi, friends. I'm Jenny K, also known as Living Pattern, and I'm thrilled to guide you through painting an all time favorite the recapam in watercolor. In less than 10 minutes, we'll capture the graceful elegance of this popular tropical using a simple wet on dry technique. This method will allow us to create those distinctive feathery fronds that make the recopom so recognizable. We'll paint our palm frond one leaflet stroke at a time. And as a fun finish, we'll add some paint splatters to give our painting that extra touch of tropical energy. So grab your brush, and let's bring some lush speckled greenery to your day. 2. Essential Materials & Supplies: Let's walk through all of the materials you're going to need for this project. I'm using a ceramic daisy palette, some extra scraps of watercolor paper for swatching. Watercolor tubes in sap green, olive green, hookers green, and Vidian. A quill brush I got from Jackson's that I absolutely love. It's a 30 Arches watercolor paper with a nice hand torn decled edge, 140 pound cold press and a rag, two ns off jars, and a squirt bottle. That is all the supplies you'll need for this reca Palm project. 3. Step-by-Step Areca Palm Watercolor Tutorial: Okay, now we are all set up and ready to paint a beautiful little reca palm. They are known for their long wispy feathery leaves and are one of the most popular indoor houseplant palms. I've got my Jackson's quill brush. I'm going to load it up with a nice medium, dark green. And the first thing I'm going to put in is the stem. If you notice, I have a very, very light sketch on my paper of just one line, and that's all I'm going to have. So I'm going to build my raku palm out one leaflet at a time. I'm holding my brush in a perfect vertical hold, and I'm letting the tip just kiss the paper. And every now and then I'm going to press a little bit harder in some areas. Coming from the stem out just to give it a little bit of depth and a little bit of character. Don't overthink this. This is kind of why I recommend not using a full sketch with every leaflet drawn and kind of just building one little leaflet at a time. If you'll notice also, I'm using all different greens as I work. I don't even have a specific green in mind when I'm going into my palette. I kind of just grab one at a time as I'm working. And some of those little leaflets are curving to the left and some are curving to the right. I'm very careful about the points. If you're going to be careful about anything, it would definitely be the points. You want them all to remain the same. The reca is kind of feathery. And if you notice the leaflet is the same width towards the middle, and then it tapers to a very sharp point on the end, and that is truly what makes it look like an raka palm. So just keep on building out. Different pressures, curving the leaflets different ways, using all your different greens from your palette. And we are coming right along. See how quick this painting is. I just love it. It's a great little exercise. It is a perfect gift for a plant lover or to hang in your house. And yeah, some of those little lines are teeny, tiny, and some are a little bit thicker, and I like that because nature's not perfect, and it just keeps it a little bit more organic. And this is kind of the point where I look at it and think, do I add more? Or do I pause? And I think it's a pause for me. Now, for the fun fun fun part, I'm going to add in some splatter. If you did my bird of paradise class, then you know I do like some splatter. I think it gives it some cool character. Everyone loves the effect. I'm gonna load my brush up with some of the mid greens and just kind of tap it. Just tap it a little bit like that. Now, if some of the leaf is still a little bit wet, it'll make a cool effect where some of the paint splatter will seep into. And don't do too much, but just enough. So I'm just picking, you know, three different greens to do a little bit of this splatter effect. And that is just about it. In under 10 minutes, we made a fun little reca pom painting using multiple greens and a couple of really cool techniques. 4. Share Your Areca Palm: Conclusion: If you've been painting along, you've created your very own Eureka palm watercolor. We've captured the grace and lightness of this tropical beauty using modern watercolor techniques. Remember, every painting is unique, just like every palm frond in nature. We all have our own style to embrace and appreciate. I'd love to see your paintings in the class project gallery, so please share. If you enjoyed my mini class, a review would mean a lot.
