The idea here is to enjoy the process in a mindful way.

Throughout the class, we'll cover:

  • How to create an abstract background
  • Color relationships and how they can impact an artwork
  • How working with layers can add depth to your piece
  • How to create textures using day-to-day objects like tissues and vegetables from our kitchen
  • and most importantly, how to be present as you create your artwork.

In my seven years of teaching, I have often encountered students before a session who claim they are not artists but are able to create something truly magical by the end of the session. My job here is not only to teach you my style of painting but help you explore your own expression on this magical path of creativity.

This class is for all levels, especially for beginners who want to get started with acrylic painting, but it's also excellent for more experienced artists who need a little break to stop and enjoy the process of painting. Everyone can enjoy this process to learn and discover that each person is a special kind of artist. By the end of this session, you will be able to create art independently and with confidence, and you will be ready to explore a new journey with every new art you will create using this process.

1. Introduction: In this hectic life, I'm always looking for moments of being with myself. Art gives me that peace of mind and heels my soul. Hi, I'm Teena Khetarpal. I am originally from a town in India called Jodhpur. Jodhpur is also known as a blue city. And you can clearly see how I often unknowingly create artworks using the colors from my hometown. This connection is so deeply rooted. My love for art started when I was a six-year-old kid. Even as a kid, the process of art for me was my movement of connecting with myself. In my college days, I did my three years diploma in art. This has helped me to understand the technical aspects of painting and has led me to become a successful artist. Over the years, I have trained a lot of people in a variety of mediums. In this class, you will create a meditative style of acrylic artwork. You will learn how to create an abstract background, understand about colors and they can impact an artwork and how working with layers can add depth to your piece. How to create textures using D to D, objects like tissues and vegetables from a kitchen. And most importantly, how to enjoy the process in a mindful way. For me, meditation is all about being in the moment. And being mindful is a state when we focus our feelings without any judgment. This is exactly the mantra of my sessions. Creating art without any judgment or any ambitions. This class is perfect for beginners and anybody looking to relax. And if you are looking to create art with all its healing benefits, you are at the right place. What you will learn in this class can be used to create a variety of different artworks. My job here is not only to teach my style of painting, but also to get you started in this magical part of creativity. So let's dive in, in this creative journey together. 2. Class Orientation: In today's class, you will learn step-by-step process of creating an artwork with acrylic colors. Here we will focus on the principles of letting go. Not getting too attached to something is a primary requirement for a meditative state. We will be creating artwork using the style of layering for the colors and Canvas to become one whole unit, we need to add colors in form of layers. Only after a few layers, colors start to become a part of the canvas. Other than that, we will also learn about creating textures. Textures, add depth to an artwork. Texture speaks volumes of emotions. They are often the soul of an artwork. No art of mine is complete without or gives me satisfaction without adding textures to it. Actually, textures are not difficult to create as it looks, but you need to understand the process. Learning to create textures for your artwork for me is a great start as it starts defining your artwork from the very beginning. Also, it makes your artwork looks more professional. In the process of learning, all the focus will be to be mindful and enjoy the moment. You will need acrylic paints of your choice. Brushes, water container, some tissues, and some bottle or pen lids, stamps. And Jesso to prime our Canvas, these are the supplies I'm using in the artwork. Feel free to use what is easily available to you. Use your imagination and let your creative juices flow. Like for example, instead of lids, you can create your own shape of texture using a hardbound paper or cardboard. You can use dried leaves and stems instead of vegetables. At the end of the session, I'm looking forward to seeing your art in the project gallery. Once you finish your artwork, please share a picture in the project gallery. In your artwork, I'm looking forward to seeing your inputs like the colors you like, the vegetables you choose, the artwork you finalize. Everything should depict you as an artist instead of your work being a copy of mine. Learn the techniques and do it in your own style. This will help you develop your own style as an artist and help you in your future projects. I can't wait to see your class projects. I'm already so excited about our session. Can't wait to see you inside the class for a creative Meetup. 3. Gesso Layer: Prep Your Canvas : Before we dive into this journey of colors and textures, let me tell you how to prepare our Canvas. Always apply a thin layer of Jesso on the Canvas ,a night before you start painting. Jesso acts as a protective layer. It doesn't let the colors get absorbed in the fabric of the canvas. When the colors get absorbed in the fabric, they look dull. And we want vibrant colors for our artwork. So it's important to prep your Canvas, but jesso jesso can be as smooth, as textured as required. For this artwork. Try to create a Jesso background as smooth as possible as we will be adding texture in the later layers. Before you apply, Jesso makes sure your canvas is clean. Dry wipe it clean to make sure there are no dust particles on the Canvas before we apply. Just make sure you use an old brush to apply Jesso on the canvas as you don't want to spoil your new brush. Cleaning Jesso dipped brush is really difficult and Jesso tends to make your brushes stiff. Don't forget to protect your clothes and environment when applying Jesso , make sure you apply Jesso in a thin coat as we don't want a very thick coat of it on our canvas as we want it to be completely dried overnight. A thin layer of Jesso it's also easier to work on. Once you are done, leave it to dry overnight. The next day your canvas is ready to get started. Before you move on to the next lesson, make sure your Jeeso layer has completely dried and that's the reason why apply the. Jesso the night before you start painting, once it's dry, the canvas is all set for your creativity. In the next lesson, we'll start applying paint to our canvas. See you there. 4. The First Layer: Adding Paint: Our first layer of the Jesu is simply applying some paint on the canvas. This step is as simple as that. You can start pulling some colors on the palette and start applying it on the canvas. You can also pull some paints directly on the canvas and start mixing them very gently. Here, I'm using these colors, but you must use colors that you are most inclined to. Galileo's most important element in an art. And you must always choose the colors that you like the most. When we use colors for a very long time, they become our friends and we start to understand them. So when hints, you must always, always use colors that are friendly with you. That's so important for the success of your painting. Applying a layer of paint to the canvas before we get started is a great method to give a professional finished to the Canvas. You don't have to mix the colors really well. Just some loose strokes of the colors on the entire canvas. This layer will be mostly covered with the next layer, so don't bother too much about it. Just enjoy the process. Enjoy every stroke you apply. Connecting brush loaded with paint to the canvas has a soothing effect on our minds. Try and absorb the entire positivity. This moment is radiating, soak in this moment of peace and calm. This is such an underappreciated step. Just the process of applying paint on the canvas can be highly beneficial for anxiety, stress, and sometimes even to come down panic attacks, try it and see the magic. Do it in a calm environment with no rush to finish this art. Enjoy this tip. Just enjoy the calming moment. Once you're done with this step, leave your canvas to dry completely. Why you enjoy your tea or coffee. Next up, we'll talk about how to choose colors for your painting. 5. Your Palette: Warm Vs Cool Colors: Before we get started, let's understand a little about colors. Do you remember as a child, every time you bought bright colored clay, do it turned into mud color in the end, you had no idea what happened. Let me tell you what exactly happened to your candles. This is because of warm and cool colors. You never mix warm and cool colors. Typically, warm colors are red, yellow, and orange, and cool colors are blue and greens. That's not just about it as every color has its own warm and cool version. But for now, all you need to know is that warm colors are red, yellow and orange, and cool colors are blue and greens. You don't want to mix warm and cool colors. Otherwise you might end up getting muddy brown color. You mix them only if you want to create a muddy brown color. For the purpose of this artwork, we don't want to mix them. So if for one layer you are choosing a set of warm colors. For the next one, you use cool colors and make sure each layer is completely dry before you move on to the next one, knowledge of warm and cool colors not only helps to keep your colors bright, but it also adds depth to your artwork. Warm and cool colors also helped to make something stand out easily in an artwork. Color difference in warm and cool colors can also help you achieve contrast in your painting. Choose any two or three colors for the next step. Choose colors from either warm or cool colors sets. Understanding, if you choose, for example, warm colors for this layer, you will choose cool colors for the next one. I'm working with tones of yellow and orange as I wish to use cool colors for my layer. After that, once you've understood the concept of warm and cool colors, in the next lesson, Let's get started with adding some textures to our artwork. See you in the next video. 6. The Second Layer: Adding Texture: After your layer has completely dried, it's time for the second layer. That's where we will apply texture to our artwork. This layer is the background of art. What is the background? Background is a space around the object and an artwork that gives more dimension to a subject. In order to create a successful artwork, artist must first create a background. The background is often overlooked in the creative process, but they are actually most critical element of your painting. Adding texture to any artwork, gift, feelings and emotions to the background. Textures add depth to our artwork. Textures also interact with our viewers. Textures make your art more engaging, less flat, and more interesting. The key with the textures is to make sure they are not too smooth or to complete. Otherwise they will not look natural. Perfection is not what we are looking for while creating textures. To create texture in an artwork, did two or three colors different from the one that you took in the first layer. Always remember, warm and cool colors do not mix. Apply these colors at a section of the Canvas and while it's still wet, cover that section with few tissue papers. You need to be quick here. Before the colors dry, you need to do this. That's the reason paint a little section and cover it with tissue while it's still wet. Crumbled the tissue paper and keep it on the canvas. While it's on the Canvas. Quiz it a little to get as many folds as possible. But please be gentle hill, remove the tissue paper and see the beautiful texture underneath it. So beautifully reveals our first layer as well. Let me show you the entire process again. Apply paints on a section of the Canvas, crumble the tissue paper, and keep it on the vet section of the Canvas. Gently squeeze the tissue while it's still on the canvas. And now it's time to remove the tissue to see the beautiful textured effect on a Canvas. Isn't it? Amazing? I have been painting in this style for use, but I still get excited about every single time. It is. So magical, it has this magical impact on me. It's so soothing to do this process again and again. Important tips. Don't leave the tissue on the Canvas for too long as it gets stuck to the Canvas. This is the most common mistake I often see students make. The moment you leave the tissue for too long. It's difficult to remove. As it gets stuck to the Canvas. You have to remove the tissue almost immediately. Secondly, I keep my tissue on the canvas and leave it there for a minute or two and then remove it. I am not dabbing the tissue on the Canvas. Dabbing removes the color from the Canvas. And in this tile we are creating textured effect on the Canvas. Having said that, dabbing is also a grid style for backgrounds. But that's not the effect we are looking for right now. While the Canvas has getting dried, relax and take a deep breath for a few minutes. Anxiety is always related to when things do not go in the right direction. But actually, too much excitement also sometimes makes us hypo, feel very happy with this new learning and in love with a textured effect that we've created. Now it's time to relax office, sit back and take a deep breath for a few minutes to relax ourselves and charge us for the new moment. Once you can this is completely dried. You are ready for the next step, stamping. So let's get started. 7. Textures With Homemade Stamps: Once our previous layer has completely dried, I want you to take a moment and appreciate this beautiful background you have created. It's absolutely amazing. Now, let's move on to the next step. Stamping. Using our homemade stamps to create stamps effect in our artwork. Don't buy expensive stamps from the market. Instead, dawn your fruits and vegetables into artistic stamps. Making your own stamp is a fun way to experiment with patterns, textures, and creating different effects. They can add an extra element of creativity to your painting, fruits or vegetables of your choice, and cut them in half. The Dow, your stamp is ready. You can use a reddish stamp, you can use APA style based and potato stamp. Experiment with a variety. For any artwork. However, larger canvas is, don't take more than two to three different stamps. Ideally for a small canvas to stamps and for a large 13 max. At every stage, we want to maintain the balance of the artwork. Now, take your stamp and apply paint on it and stamp it on the canvas. Try and do it all over the canvas, but remember not to overdo it. Do it all over the canvas. Some small stamps, some big, but don't let them overlap too much. Leave some gaps so that we can see a beautiful background clearly. This surely don't want to hide our background. Stamping. You can use contrast color to your background, or you can use the same color in different sheet here. For this step, I am using contrast color from my background. Once you apply paint to your vegetable, make sure you get rid of all the extra paint from the stand before you stamp it on the Canvas. Too much paint on this time might not give the effect. We are looking for. Use the same vegetable and keep stamping till the paint is completely gone. Do the same thing till you are satisfied with the results. Don't overdo this step. A few stems here and there, a few bright and a few dels times, and you're golden. We want to add a subtle texture to this background to create an illusion of depth. We don't want a stamp prints to look perfect. Please remember that does not apply too much paint on the stamps. Otherwise the paint will be to stock. We want it to be a part of the background. After you apply paint, understand. Take the brush and remove all the extra paint from it. Remove as much as possible. Now print this time on the canvas. A thin layer of paint on it. Share the thick in the gallery of the work you have done so far. I would love to see how it is going so far. Once your Canvas has dried, I will see you in the next video where we will add some shapes to our artwork. 8. Sketching: Practice Some Shapes : Leave your Canvas for a bit and take some sheets of paper and some felt pens. I usually like to do this with black pen, but you feel free to use the color you like. Let's start creating some simple shapes on these papers. I really like to sketch nature, so I'm always catching leaves and plants and flowers. But you can sketch humans or cars or maybe whales chooses subject that you like the most. I always suggest creating art that you like the most. Your artwork is your artistic expression and it should depict that is a great way to keep our drawing skills sharp. Sketching helps us to stay inspired by drawing what's around us. Lots of artists have developed their art. What the time through sketches, throwing our ideas onto a sketch pad before working on the final artwork mix-up process, easier, we see better results. Sketching allows us to be more confident. Take risks, and explore new ideas. Make a few sketches till you find something which you want to paint on your textured Canvas. I am very happy with this one. For a better composition, maybe I can add some circles on the sides. While sketching. Do not judge what's coming out on paper. Let it just happened. Have fun. That's the only way to improve. The important aspect of sketching is that it helps you improve your final artwork as it will help you see your mistakes before you put too much time into them. Sketching gives you control of your pencil and your art. You are an artist when you doodle, draw and create anything before you move on to the next step to click a picture of your artwork so far and shared in the picture gallery for me to see your progress. Once you are ready, I will see you in the next video. 9. Painting: Adding Your Subject: I'm textured Canvas is all dried and ready. Sometimes I feel at this stage my canvas is ready to be hung in my home. It looks quite complete to me right now, but let's go ahead and understand in case if we want to paint on this, how will we do that? Once my subject is ready, I quickly copy this sketch on my canvas. If you aren't confident, you can happily trace it on the canvas while sketching in case if you make a mistake, please don't panic. Mistakes of creativity's best friend. Nothing to worry. Keep creating with confidence. Once your sketch is ready, you are ready to paint it. You can simply use black paint to paint it. But here I am mixing equal quantities of my red and blue and mixing it to create my dark tone. I always like to create my dark tones. Creating my own dark tone, also add additional dimension to my artwork. Then using a store what color? It is also a kind of a satisfactory thing for me. Now, for painting your sketch, firstly, use a thin brush like I'm using a Taylor and now treat your brush like a pen or a pencil. Try to paint with the tip of the brush. Don't lay it flat on the surface. Paint with the tip of the brush this way. This way you have control over the thickness or thinness of a line. Continue and finish your entire sketch. Fill in larger areas and if you are comfortable, go ahead and do some line work in some of the sections. Keep working on it till you are satisfied with the results. In the next lesson, you will add final touches to your artwork before we call it Finish. Once you are satisfied with this stuff, I will see you in the final touches. 10. Final Touches: Creating Balance: Two main elements required to call an artwork finished, balance of shape and balance of colors. If any of these two is missing, the artwork isn't as appealing to I in case you feel any section needs some shapes. Now is the time to go ahead and balance your artwork. Add some extra lines or shapes only if required, do this step. I'm very happy with my shapes here. And secondly, you need to balance colors. To balance colors, you need to see that your artwork has a midtone, dark tone and the lightest tone. If any of the tone is missing in an artwork, the artwork loses its impact on the audience. Now here I feel we have a mid tone or entire background is done in the mid tone. Darkest tone is our subject. What is missing is the lightest tone. For the lightest tone, I'm using white. But you can use the lightest form of any color, like lightest blue, lightest pink, or lightest orange. Experiment with different tones and see the results. Here. I'm dipping my lid and white color and stamping on my Canvas. Don't overdo it gently at a few places. That's it. We don't want to focus too much on a light color. The purpose of the light color is just to balance the entire artwork, bringing all the elements together. A balanced artwork grabs more attention. It is one of the most important elements of art and you must never neglect it. I hope you enjoyed creating this artwork as much as I did. Now. Go and create a lot more artworks. But don't forget to enjoy the process. Being in the moment is the key element and create without thinking about the final results. What's most important is this moment. The next video is a little recap of the entire process. See you there. 11. Final Thoughts: Congratulations, we did it. Firstly, sit back and enjoy this creation of yours. Feel happy about what you have achieved. Find a perfect spot in your home to display it for family and friends to appreciate it. That's it. That's a wrap. Just go ahead, find a perfect time of the day when you are excited to create an block it for creating a paintings. Keep creating. Remember the importance of layering and keep in mind, adding texture to the artwork can be a simple process, but it gives a whole new dimension to your art. You don't need to buy expensive stamps from the market. Just use simple day-to-day items as stamps. When you have time in your office at home while waiting outside your kid's soccer piano lessons are waiting for your turn in for a meeting. Just carry a sketchbook and sketch for future use for your paintings. A quick recap. In this class, you will have learned all about creating art using layers. You learned about using just so and it's important in an artwork, you understood how to get textured effect using simple day-to-day things like tissue or vegetables before finishing an artwork, what are the important elements to consider? If there is one thing I hope you take from this class, it's to enjoy the process and being in the moment is important for the success of anything you do. Go ahead and create beautiful, creative dynamic paintings and do share them with me in the project gallery. I can't wait to see your magical creations. If you like the session, please do leave a comments. I look forward to your comments. Each and every common truly means a lot to me. And please do follow me to know about my future classes. See you next time.
