1. Introduction : Hello, my name is Hilda. I'm a Dutch fashion designer. A few years ago, I started my own fashion brands, called [inaudible]. It means people, inspiring people. I love to inspire you to make your own timeless products by using your creativity. I believe that every person is creative and it's so satisfying to make something yourself. It is my desire to take you step-by-step into the process of making something beautiful for your little one. In this class I teach you how to make this dungaree. This is a really good beginner project and you only need to know the basics of sewing. I really hope you enjoy this class and that you will be amazed at the beautiful result. Let's get started.
2. Grap Your Tools And Gather Your Materials: The first step, grab your tools and gather your materials. What you need is the pattern. To make it easy for you, I uploaded the pattern in the link below. In this template, you find the exact dimensions of dungaree. In the video about the pattern, I will show you the right way how to print this one on scale but I will also show you how to get the different pieces. Cherish your fabric. The fabric I use is from 95 percent of cotton, 5 percent from spandex polyester. This means it stretches a bit. You only need 90 by 90 centimeters of fabric. This is about 35 by 35 inches. You also need sewing threads. As you can see, I use got certified sewing threats, gases, a textual certification, and they can throw factories on raw conditions and the ecological standards. Of course, this is way better for the environment and for the people who make the frets. I would also preferred to use Gulf certified fabrics. This is a bit more expensive. You will notice that the quality is also a lot better. You need two buttons. I use wooden buttons because this matches the fabric I use.To sew the buttons, you need a needle, and of course, sewing pins are always useful. You also need scissors. I use two different kinds of scissors. One is for paper and the other one is specially made to cut out the fabric. You need a sewing machine. Normally, I also use my lock machine, so if you have one you can of course use this one. But because this is a beginners class, I also show you how to make this dungaree by only using your regular sewing machine without having to use other complicated machines.
3. About The Pattern : I uploaded a template for you, and you can find it in a link below this video. Open this file. There are four pages and it's very important that you print this file on 100 percent, so it's exactly on scale. Make sure you print the page with the settings exact same size. I made two black boxes on page three. The first box needs to be exactly one centimeter, and the second box one inch, so check if the dimensions are correct. On the second page, you see a thick line at the top, you can cut away this area above the thick line of page 2. Now, let page 2 overlap page 1 so it becomes a pattern. Both lines need to be lined up. I repeat this with a third page, so cut away this part and let it overlap page 2. Now your pattern is ready for use. The size is suitable for a newborn from 0-9 months old. Cut out the size she would like to make. I make size 74 because this is the size of my six months old baby boy. Maybe you might have noticed if you use this pattern for the back and the front of the dungaree. For the backside, you use a whole pattern, but for the front side you have to fold the paper at this line. I will explain this later in the video, laying out a pattern and cutting out the pieces.
4. Laying Out The Pattern And Cutting Out The Pieces: Cutting out the pieces. At the end of this video, you have six pieces in total. I have divided this pieces into A, B, C, D, and E. You start with the back of the dungaree. This is piece A. On the template. I show you how to place the pattern on the fabric. You'll also see the line where a fabric should be folded. Now you cut out the entire back. Now we started peace B. This is the front part. On the pattern you see a folding line named guideline B and D. With the size of the dungaree, you have to fold the paper at this line. Fold the fabric in half as indicated on the template and attach the pattern on the fabric. Now you cut out the front part. Now we start with part C. Fold back the paper by folding line named, guideline B and D. Cut out the line named guidelines C and D. Fold the fabric in half again and cut out B, C. Part D is almost the same. But just like Piece B, you have to fold the line with the name guideline B and D backwards again. Cut out part D. You are almost ready. Now we only have to cut out the strips. You don't need to fold the fabric in half for this piece. Cut it out twice. Now you have all the pieces you need to make the dungaree.
5. Sewing #1 : Sewing Step 1, making the strips. Now we start with the most fun part, sewing. First, we will sew these two strips. For the right sides, the fronts, on top of each other and attach them. We are going to sew the long side and one short side. Before I start, I set up by sewing machine. I use a straight stitch with a distance of 2.5. Now we start sewing. Of course, we want to see the good side, so you have to fold the strips. It's normal that it takes some time. The two straps are ready so we can use them in the next video.
6. Sewing #2 : Sewing step 2. Now we are going to sew the pieces C and D. We hem the bottom of both pieces. Pin the two bottom sides and sew on the sewing machine. For this I still use a straight stitch with the distance of 2.5. When you are done, cut the remaining sewing thread. Now that the bottom sides of C and D are sewn, we can start with pieces A and B. This is the back of dungaree. We start to attach piece C to piece A. At the same time we attach the strips in between the pieces. Place piece A with the right side up, and place piece C with the right side on top of this. Grab the two straps and place them between piece A and C, leaving two centimeters in between the fabric. You can choose to fasten the straps two centimeters from the sides. This is 0.8 inches. This is how the strips will fit nicely around the shoulders. You will now sew piece A, C, and E in one go. Pay close attention because we are not sewing this little pieces yet. On the pieces where the stripes are, I sew it trice and make sure they are strong enough. Cut the remaining fabric of the strips neatly and fold the dungaree, so the right side will be turned outside. Check the edges and make sure everything is strong enough. Now go ahead to take piece B and D. This will become the front of the dungaree. We will sew them together the same way. Place piece B right side up, and place D neatly on top of this, so the right sides are facing each other. Pin the two pieces together and sew them neatly under the sewing machine.
7. Sewing #3: [MUSIC] Sewing part three. Well done. Now you have finished the front and the back from the dungaree. The next step is to sew the front and the back together. Place back of the dungaree with the right-side-up, and place the front with the right side neatly on top of this. Again, the right sides are facing each other. It needs to fit exactly like a puzzle piece. Pin it from the top, so under the armpits and work your way down to the legs. Do the same thing on the other side as well. [MUSIC] This way you're attached the pieces C and D together. Also here you have to fold this inside out. [MUSIC] Now you are going to sew everything in one go under the sewing machine. [MUSIC] Cut away the remaining fabric neatly, about 0.5 centimeters from sewing line. This is about 0.2 inches. Make sure that everything is properly put together as strong enough. You are already starting to see the shape of the dungaree.
8. Sewing #4: Sewing part 4. First we are going to hand the bottom of the legs. Fold the fabric inwards twice, two times two centimeters, and pin them together. [MUSIC]. I place needle of the sewing machine one centimeter away from the edge, so 0.4 inches. [MUSIC]. When I'm done with the first line, I'll sew this again, but then with 1.5 centimeters from the edge, so 0.06 inches. I will do this because I will end up with two lines with a distance half a centimeter between them, so 0.2 inches. [MUSIC]. Now we are going to sew around the inside of the two legs. Again, place the pins, assert pieces together under the sewing machine in one go. [MUSIC].
9. Sewing #5: Sewing Part 5, the buttons and the button holes. The size of the button holes, of course, will depend on the size of the buttons you are going to use. My buttons are 12 millimeters, so 0.74 inches. This means that the button holes also have this size. Take the pins and measure the distance of the button holes. Place the button hole about one centimeter away from the bottom of the straps. All right. Because we are going to sew a different pattern than a straight stitch, we have to change the settings on the sewing machine. I put the sewing machine on the 6 set stitch, position 2. Now, I carefully, I sew a rectangle shape around the line I have created with the pins. After that, I carefully cut open the middle section. Now I only have to sew the bottom buttons on the dungaree by hand, one centimeter from the top and the side. Make sure you fasten the wooden buttons as good as possible. Use enough threads and stitches, so it will stay in its place because a baby naturally wants to put everything in his mouth. Check this very carefully before you put on the dungaree. Now the dungaree is ready. Make sure that all pins are removed and finish everything by cutting all loose threads.
