About This Class

A very short class that will teach you how to create a title animation to use in your own videos. The only thing you will need to follow along is Adobe After Effects. This is a very short and straight to the point class where we will jump right into animating. For a more comprehensive class explaining how to use Adobe After Effects check out my beginner classes such as Basics of Motion Design: Start Animating in Adobe After Effects  or The Easiest Motion Graphics Class you will Ever Take - A Perfect Intro to Adobe After Effects

In this class you'll learn:

  • How to animate using the position property
  • How to animate a line using a trim path
  • how to use a matte layer
  • An easy write on animation technique
  • How to export without a background

You’ll be creating:

  • A title animation using the techniques taught in this class

1. Introduction: Welcome to Learn and FV, where my main goal is to teach you how to animate something in under 5 minutes. And this episode will animate this title animation that you can put on top of your own videos. Can't wait to see the animations you create. 2. Getting Started: To get started with this class, the only thing you need is Adobe Acer ffex to follow along. Your class project is to follow along and create your own title animation. I'll make a completed version of the project file on the project and resources page. Feel free to post your projects to the Project Gallery. I love seeing the animations you create. 3. The Main Lesson: First thing we're going to do is get our type tool and type out some text. You can copy my font or use any font you would like. We'll center to the middle of the composition with the align panel. Duplicate it with Control D. And I type out some new text. I'll change the font. Align it to the center of the composition. Now I'm going to draw a line with the pen tool. I'll turn the grid on to use as a guide. Always remember that holding the Shift key will allow you to draw a straight line. We'll change the stroke up to ten. We'll get rid of our fill because we don't need it. Change the name of the layer to line, toggle down the contents. Under stroke, I'm going to choose round cap. We can turn our grid off. Now we'll align this line to the center of the composition. Turn the text off so we can see it better. Align our anchor point to the center of the line. Now, under AD, I'm going to add a trim path, and this is how we're going to animate our line. I'll change the start and end to 50%. Press the stopwatches, move over on the timeline to 15 frames. We'll change the start to 0% and end to 100%. Select all our keyframes, press F nine to add some easy Es. Now we've got our line animation finished. Now we'll animate the text. We'll turn our learn text back on. And at the end of the line animation is when we want our animation to start. Going to use arrow keys to nudge the learn text under the line. Bring up the position with Control P and press a stopwatch, move over maybe 20 frames on the timeline, or subtract 100 from the Y position. Press F nine to ess, head into the graph editor, like this handle to the left. Now we're going to create a mat to make our learn text invisible under the line. Draw a rectangle. Make sure there's a fill. I'll turn the stroke off, rename the layer matte. We'll move the matte layer under the learn layer, and we'll use the track Mat Pick Whip connected to the matte layer. And this is important. Make sure you click on the Invert MT button. There we go. Now we're going to do the same thing for the five. Go to turn the in five layer back on, and we're going to nudge it above the line. Bring up the position, press the stopwatch, move over on the timeline. This time we're going to add 100 to the Y position. Easy Ease, head into the graph editor, drag this handle to the left. And now we're again going to use the track Mat pick whip connected to the matte layer. This time we do not need to press the invert Mat button. But as you can see, we have a little bit of an issue. We can see some of the text popping out. So we're going to have to adjust the position on our first keyframe using the arrow key, I'm going to nudge it. Nudge it up until we can't see the text anymore. There we go. Problem solved. Now we can turn all our layers back on. Preview our animation. Now we'll grab our Pen tool, make sure our text is selected. Now we're gonna draw a series of lines over our text. Now we'll search for the stroke effect in effects and presets. Make sure we change the paint style to reveal original image. Make sure all masks is selected. Now it's a matter of refining our settings. Your settings might be different depending on the font you're using and the font size. Once we've dialed those numbers in, we'll animate it using the end property. Change our end to 0%, press the stopwatch, move over on the timeline. Change the end to 100%. We'll easy ease our keyframes, go into the graph editor, drag this handle to the left. I think I'm going to offset the key frames a little bit from our position keyframes, just so we can see the write on effect a little bit better as it animates in. There we go. I think that's better. As you can see with this method, things can be a little bit messy sometimes. So it's a matter of going in, refining it, refining our lines, changing the brush size till we get something that looks good. As you can see, this is not the most sophisticated way to create a write on effect, but it is the easiest, and it'll be animating in so fast that most people won't even be able to notice sloppiness. See, let's zoom out in preview. 4. How to Export Without a Background: To export your animations to use in your own videos, the first thing you want to do is make sure you have no background. To make sure this, we can press the toggle transparency button. If you see the checkered background, you're good to go. One thing I forgot to mention in the original tutorial you will need to trim your work area to how long you want your exported animation to be. Go up to File, Export, add to Render Q. We can leave Render settings the way they are. We're going to want to go to Output Module. We'll click on this high quality button. Now, the option we want is under channels, and we want RGB plus Alpha. The QuickTime format doesn't have this option, and neither does the h 0.264. So what I usually do is I export as AVI. I will go back to Channels and we'll see that our option is available now. We'll select it. Click Okay. And under output two is where you would name your file and where you're going to export. I'm going to leave mine as the default. We'll go over here and click Render. There you go. Now you'll be able to upload your file into your video editing software and use it in your video. 5. Outro: Congratulations, and thank you for taking this very short motion graphics class. Now you can post your projects to the Project Gallery. I would love to see the animations you've created.
