About This Class

Do you want to learn Japanese? The first thing you'll want to learn is the alphabet. This course covers the katakana alphabet. You'll learn how to read and write some everyday words in Japanese. You'll find videos with explanations, example words, and practices so you can memorize katakana quickly and efficiently.

The Japanese writing system has 3 different alphabets - hiragana, katakana, and kanji. Most people start by learning hiragana, then katakana, then kanji. If you haven't learned hiragana yet, check out my hiragana course here on Skillshare!

1. Course Introduction: Hello and welcome to cut the panel basics online course. My name is Andy, and in this course, you'll learn how to read words written in Katakana. Katakana is one of the three alphabets in the Japanese writing system. Most people start by learning Cato gonna Katakana, Kanji. So if you haven't learned yet, I highly suggest you check out my dog on a course before taking this one. Qatar canal follows the same pronunciation pattern as Hiragana, and it follows most of the same rules. However, we use katakana forwards are originated from other languages, e.g. pisa, which means pizza, bassoon, which means bus, and neck good acid, which means Nicholas. We often refer to these words as loan words. You'll also see foreign names and places written in Katakana. Like Tomer for Tom Petty, for Paris, and Canada. For Canada. You may occasionally see copper can I use to emphasize words in a sentence similar to the way we would bold or italicized words in English. Lastly, you may see Japanese words that have very difficult Kanji written in Katakana. For this reason, you'll often see animals and insects written in Katakana, e.g. cheating and higher. Here's a quick read through of each Katakana character. E, Wu Qi Qu K. C to say so. T to the top. Now Ni Nu naught high, he who hear me? They're more. Yeah. You your dy du the door. Or believe it or not, there are a ton of loan words that sound similar to words in English and are easy to memorize. Learning katakana will help you expand your vocabulary quickly. Over the next several lessons, we'll practice reading each individual character. Good luck, and I'll see you in the next video. 2. a i u e o | アイウエオ: In this lesson, we'll learn the Katakana characters for the five vowel sounds in Japanese. The first character will learn is R. R is for icecream. Which of these characters is? The next character will learn is e. E. E is for ER home Internet. Which of these characters is e? E, i, i. I don't, I don't. The next character will learn is woo. Woo hoo is for the good at it. Which of these characters is who could edit? Who could edit? Outdoor? Outdoor? Reduces, reduces. The next character will learn is, is for a bit alkaline. Which of these characters is at rest? The final character will learn is all. 0 is for unmuted too. Orangey. Or which of these characters is Biodesign? Biodesign. We learned the characters who bought. In the next lesson, we'll learn the characters Qi Qu care. See you in the next video. 3. ka ki ku ke ko | カキクケコ: In this lesson, we'll learn the characters car key k. Before we begin, let's talk about how to create a long vowels in Katakana. Hiragana, we would create long vowels by adding a vowel to the end of a character. In Katakana, we would add a line to the end of a character to extend the vowel sound. E.g. Saqqara, which means soccer. K key, which means cake, law, which means rope. The first character will learn is cop. Cop. Car is for Comdata card in the car. Which of these characters is Caudal? Caudal or gardener? Ocarina. The next character will learn is key. Key. Key is for q. We teaching key. Which of these characters is key? Qe, QE, T-shirt, t-shirt. The next character will learn is could. Could. Could, is for cookie. Could easily master. Which of these characters is crazy? Crazy. Make me. The next character will learn is cat. Cat is for k, K ketchup. Which of these characters is k? K, k, K, k. Care. The final character will learn is called port is for Coca-Cola coin. Which of these characters is called? Coca-cola? Coca-cola. Ocon? Gone. Key, key, caught. Caught. We learn the characters, car, key k. In the next lesson, we'll learn the characters. Good day. When writing sheet, you'll want to make sure that the first two strokes are horizontal and the third stroke is written from the bottom up. Which are these characters? Is she? She? Nausea, nausea. C2. So note that the characters so looks very similar to the character when writing. So you'll want to make sure that the first stroke is vertical and the second stroke is written from the top down. Note that the character looks very similar to the character sheet I'm writing to. You want to make sure that the first two strokes are vertical and the third stroke is written from the top down. When writing, you'll want to make sure that the first stroke is horizontal and the second stroke is written from the bottom up. Which of these characters is tornado? Tornado. Hand gutsy. Hung gutsy. In addition to the small, yeah, You and your characters, you will encounter words with a small e. In katakana. Small vowels function similarly too small. Yeah, you simply replace the previous vowel sound with the small e or 0 sound. Let's take a look at some common small vowel combinations. To review. What is this character? What is this character? The small, isn't used very often, but you may occasionally see these combinations to to, to do. You may also come across with the duck then. Perfect. You may also see a small air after, represent the English w sound. Where? Where? Wedding, wedding. Sweden. Sweden. What is this character? A common combination that uses a small 0 is for for photo. Photo. For Q. For Q font, the font, you may see a small or after to represent the English w sound. What words do that? Once stood at? Now that you can read Hiragana, Katakana, you can study Japanese without relying too much on a goldmine. If you want to continue to improve your reading and writing, you can begin studying Kanji. You can print out a katakana test sheet in the project section of this course. Consider uploading your worksheet to the project section when you're done, being able to read katakana fluently will take time and practice. As you practice reading words and sentences, reading katakana will eventually become second nature.
