1. Course Introduction: Hello and welcome to Japanese for Beginners, the online course where you will practice speaking Japanese from day one. My name is Andy and I will be your instructor for this course. Learning a new language requires practice. It's no different from learning an instrument or playing a sport. Too many language courses and textbooks out there focused on learning about the language and don't give enough opportunities to actually use the language. Could you imagine showing up to basketball practice and spending the entire time on the bleachers reading the rule book. Of course, it's important to have a basic understanding of the rules. But in order to become fluent in Japanese, they will need to actually experience the language. In this course, you'll be speaking Japanese from lesson one. This speech bubble icon on the bottom right corner of the screen will be your cue to speak. So make sure you're in a place where you're able to speak out loud. You can also pause the video if you need more time to think of a word or phrase. I also recommend that you go through the lessons in order as each new lesson builds on the previous lessons. After each video, you'll find a summary of the lesson, a review exercise, and a list of additional vocabulary. Before we dive into the first lesson, let's take a moment to talk about the Japanese writing system. The Japanese writing system involves mixing and matching three different types of alphabets. You're not gonna cut the canal and Kanzi. In addition, we have Rho g, which is a representation of Japanese using the Roman alphabet. Most Japanese learners start by memorizing Hiragana, then cut that and then Kanji. In this course, we'll write Royal Navy under the Japanese so that you can practice speaking even if you don't know how to read Japanese yet. Learning a new language is a fun and rewarding experience, and Japanese is no exception. The more Japanese you learn, the better you'll be able to experience the rich and unique culture of Japan. Thanks for watching this video and I'll see you in lesson one. 2. Lesson 1 - Greetings: Hello and welcome to Japanese for Beginners, the online course where you will practice speaking Japanese from day one. You're watching level one, less than one greetings. In this lesson, you'll learn how to greet people in Japanese. By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to take part in the following dialogue. Ohio goes, I must make son Ohio because I must consensus. Before we begin, let's talk a little bit about Japanese vowels. There are only five vowel sounds in Japanese or E. Let's practice saying each 1ee. Boot. In addition to these five vowel sounds, you'll encounter long versions of each vowel. When pronouncing a long vowel, you would simply extend the valve for an extra syllable. See if you can hear the difference between a short arm and a long Obasanjo. Obasanjo. In this course, whenever you see a double vowel, you'll pronounce it as a long vowel. Note that an EI combination often creates a long s sound and an OU combination often creates along all sound. The first phrase will learn in this video is good morning, which in Japanese is Ohio. Ohio. Remember that an OU combination usually creates along all sound in Japanese. Listen closely and repeat. Ohio. Ohio. Ohio is a casual way to say good morning to close friends and family members. A more polite way to say, good morning is Ohio goes I must. Ohio cosine must. You might notice that we don't really pronounce the final vowel sound at the end of Ohio goes I'm us. When speaking Japanese, it's common for the e and e vowel sounds to get dropped. Or hyoglossus, famous Ohio cosine mass. The name Mike in Japanese is pronounced my goods, my good. When referring to others in Japanese, we usually add a title to the end of their name to show respect. The most common title is sun. Sun. Sun is similar to the titles Mr or Mrs in English. So we could refer to Mike as Mike son. My son. What would be a casual way to say good morning to Mike. Ohio. Mike son, Ohio, my axon. What would be a polite way to say good morning to Mike. Ohio goes, I must make son. Ohio goes, I must make son. A common last name in Japan is Tanaka. Tanaka. The word for teacher in Japanese is sensitive. Since it, again, in Japanese, whenever you see an E combination, you'll usually pronounce it as an elongated S sound sensor. Sensor. Since it is used as a title for professions like instructors, doctors, and authors. So if you're Japanese teachers, last name is Tanaka, you would refer to her as Tanaka? Tanaka sensei. Let's say you're walking into Japanese class. What would be a polite way to say, good morning Tanaka sensor. Ohio goes, I must. Tanaka sensei. Ohio, Kusama's Tanaka sense. To say Hello or Good afternoon in Japanese, we would say community. Need to make sure to clearly pronounce the sound in the middle. If you already know, you're not gonna notice that we pronounce the heart character as one at the end of cognitive. How would you say, good afternoon, My son. Community. What? Mike son. Community what? Mike son. How would you say good afternoon. Tanaka, census community. What kind of cosines? Cognitive tenant cosine, say, good evening in Japanese is combined. Combined once again, we pronounce the heart character as one at the end of combat. Just like with continuity. Let's say you run into mic on the way home from work. How would you say, Good evening. My axon combined. Make sense? Combined what? My exam. How would you say good evening. Tanaka sensor combined what? Tanner cosine say? Combined what? Tanaka sensei. Let's talk a little bit about borrowing. The word for bowing in Japanese is or Ziggy. Boeing is a way to show respect to those around you. It's often said that the deeper the bowel, the more respect to show. Here are some of the different types of bows. And when you would use them, simple head down, about 15 degrees that you would use when politely greeting someone. Kid, it is about, about 30 degrees that you would use in formal or business settings. Scikit, it is about, about 45 degrees that you would use in a formal apology or to show the utmost respect to someone. In professional settings, men usually bow with their arms to the side, and women usually belt with their arms in front. Lastly, with close friends and family members, you can greet them with a wave instead of about. We learned how to say three different Japanese greetings. Let's review the dialogue from this lesson. What would be a polite way to say, good morning, my axon. Ohio goes, I must make son. Ohio goes, I must make sun. What would be a polite way to say, good morning Tanaka, Tennessee. Ohio goes, I must. Tanaka sensei. Ohio goes, I'm us Tanaka sensor. How would you say good afternoon. My axon, cognitive, my son. My son. How would you say good afternoon. Tanaka sensor, community. What can a cosine say? Continuity. Tanaka sensei. How would you say good evening. Mike son combined. My son combined mike sun. How would you say good evening, Tanaka. Homebound. What kind of cosine say? Compound. What kind of yogurt? Thank you. Must stop. 3. Lesson 1 Review: What would be a polite way to say, good morning Tanaka, sensate. So we would pronounce R0 as the low dose group. You would Oscar. Oscar can be used in a variety of different situations, making it a bit difficult to translate. In a self-introduction, it usually means something along the lines of, I look forward to working with you. Jurafsky on its own, is rather casual. We can make the phrase more polite by adding those are in front. Those €1 scoop. Those are your Oscar. Remember to elongate the 0 vowel sound in dorsal. Those are, those are your Roscoe. Alternatively, we could add omega extremists, the end of year Roche group, your raw score on a guy's mass. Your raw score and the guys must. Both. Those are your Oscar and Jurafsky.
