As interest in Japanese concepts like Ikigai and wabi-sabi has grown, I noticed how often these ideas are misunderstood or oversimplified. That's what led me to create these classes -- to offer an authentic, culturally grounded introduction to Japanese wellness.

Drawing on my bilingual, cross-cultural background -- a New Yorker mind with a Japanese soul -- I share these principles as practical, everyday wisdom rather than abstract philosophy.

My Skillshare classes are designed as gentle, introductory explorations into Japanese wellness. We focus on selected concepts, such as Ikigai (beyond the Venn diagram) and Japanese ... See full profile

1. Introduction: What is Japan's secret to longevity? If you've ever been curious or wanted to learn about Japanese wellness and why it's considered one of the longevity nations of the world, then this course is for you. Icky guy is a key concept that is often referenced as one of the principles of why Japan has the most centenary is per capita in the world. Roughly translates to your reason for being. However, if you have seen or have been referencing the Venn diagram, unfortunately, you have been misguided. Guy is not a framework. Thank you guys. Not a concept that can be deduced with the mind. If you are using the Venn diagram, your unfortunately starting off on the wrong foot. If you want to learn the true simple and expansive definition of Nike guy and how it can empower you today. Then this course is for you. Nice to meet you. My name is sorry okada. I am the founder of a Japanese wellness company, monogamy, which uses simple yet effective Japanese walnuts principles that can empower individuals to achieve sustainable personal wellness lives. In this course, we will first be exploring the origins story of the Venn diagram. Will then be talking about the true authentic definition of Iike guy. Using the characters and concepts that are hidden within the word itself to help guide us. We will then be noting the importing gaps that we want to be mindful of. If we do end up using this incorrect Venn diagram. Then we'll wrap up with simple get actionable takeaways that are important to be mindful of. That can empower you and your, your well-being today, where you can live a life of the true authentic definition of each guy. 2. Introduction to Japan's Ikigai "reason for being": Hi everyone, My name is sorry, and I will be your instructor for today's video. And today we will be understanding a key guys, authentic definition and meaning and how it can empower you to achieve your personal sustainable wellness journey. Today. Let's get started. So what is inky guy? Icky guy is the Japanese concept, which roughly translates to reason for being. Currently, you may have seen that inky guy is often referenced with this band diagram. However, this is not how Iike guy is defined. And in Japanese culture, such a framework does not exist. 3. The Ikigai Venn Diagram Origin Story: Now let's take a look at where the achy guide Venn diagram comes from. There are three main components that we want to consider in terms of its origins story. The first one is that there is. Alright, now let's take a look at the origins story of the IQ e-guide and diagram. There are three main components that we want to consider when taking a look at this Venn diagram origin story. The first one is this purpose UDL framework. This purpose framework was actually created by a Spanish astrologer named Andrew says Nonaka in 2011. He created this Venn diagram, which is where purpose is the intersection between what you love, what the world needs, what you can be paid for, and what you are good at. In 2011, irrespective of the Japanese concept IQ guy. This is the first component that we want to be mindful of. The second part is that in 2011. The second part is that in 29, there was a TED talk that was given by Dan Buchner, who is a National Geographic writer and explorer, who studies the world's longest looped people. This included Okinawa, which is a part of Japan. In his TED Talk, he describes this Japanese concept called achy guy. And how the people in Okinawa expressed how leaky guy is a key concept that helped them live for longevity. The third component is that a blogger, wave finder, coffee shaman, mentor and advisor named Mark when in 2014, Saul Dan button or his TED Talk, he wrote a blog about it called what is your Iike guy? He essentially changed the purpose to icky guy to share his own interpretation of this Japanese concept. You'll see here that you will see that purpose framework that was created by Andrew NACA now has the geeky guy as the center of it. Now that we've explored the origins story, now let's think through whether Marx interpretation holds some truth. The first thing we want to be mindful of is that this can be someone's IQ. But it does not have to be. Dan's TED Talk actually reflected this. He shared that one. Centenarians Iike guy was to hold her great, great, great granddaughter. If you use that reason and you try to overlay it with the Venn diagram that we're seeing here. Which is again, the intersection between what you love, the world means, what you get paid for and what you're good at. You could see how her geeky guy does not overlap and it does not align with this framework. I will share that as a Japanese walnuts coach. An individual that grew up in the culture. This is not how leaky guy is approached and it's actually a very limiting framework that I do not recommend. People use. 4. What ikigai is vs. is not: What we want to understand is that guy is not something that is coach to you. It is not something that is given to you. Icky guy is not found. An icky guy is not a framework. Icky guy is however, unique to that person. My Iike guy can be different and will be and should be different from yours. Guy is also flexible, meaning your reason for being can change over time because we change and evolve over time. Next, it is nuanced. You will explore next the true definition of geeky guy. But because it is nuanced and different, that is why it is not in this framework. In terms of their approach. Last but not least, it is multilayered. This is because icky guy, as many beautiful nuances that will next explore in terms of the true definition. But it is not simply the intersection between these four factors that will help you understand your reason for being. While I say these factors are needed in terms of understanding EQ guy. Guy in truth is very simple. Now we will explore what exactly that means. 5. Ikigai's Authentic Definition: All right, so what is the authentic definition of icky guide, like I mentioned, is the concept that which roughly translates to what makes your life worth living. What's beautiful about Japanese language is that it shows us through the characters that it's written what it means. So icky guy is actually the combination of two main words. And guide. Iike is the character of life, which is on the right-hand side here in dark green, refers to this idea of worth living. Which is why when you translate it to English, it essentially means what makes your life worth living. This is why it's a very simple concept. Now let's take a look at the deeper nuances of each character. Now that we've explored the key guys overall definition, explore the nuances. Geeky guy can be understood by breaking down the concept in greater detail. While a key, which is the first portion of IQ e-guide, means like overall, of course, like many words, there's nuances that we want to explore. There's three main definitions that we should be mindful of and can give us hints in terms of understanding each guy's true definition has three main definitions that are applicable to this concept. First, to be alive. This is the definition of a key where meaning we are alive in this world today. This is different from deaths. So this is essentially the opposite of death. Life and birth. This is another word that is used when we want to express life and when birth. So when there's a new life in this world, this is a character that we use as well. Three, daily living. This is a really key concept here that I want to make sure our b one pays attention to. So Iike, the character is often used for words such as sick or things that are related to Japanese words that reflect the daily living component. This is more about your everyday life, which is something that we want to be mindful of. Now that we've explored. Iggy, let's take a look at Guide. Guy, like I mentioned, is the second part of IQ e-guide. And it is on the right-hand side here in dark green. Overall, this word means worth living. Now let's explore the nuances. One, when we say worth living in Japanese, there's also this added to a description that the results and evidence of your actions is going to be worth living. This is really key here because we want to understand that what makes our life worth living is the evidence of your actions. I want to pause there because it is so key to understand that it is your actions that show us who we are. I don't know if you have this where you have many thoughts in the day and you want to do this, you want to do that. But how do we assess whether we have done something? It is really through our actions. And that is this component that guy can help us understand. Next, worth the anticipation and hope. This is such a beautiful component of guide that I think is really important to understand. It's worth the anticipation and hope. What does that mean? That means that we don't know for certain whether our options are going to be worth it. However, we hope and anticipate that it will be. This is such a key component of Iike guy because we understand that we may not know for certain, but we hope and do it anyways, this is the key component of geeky guy that we must understand. Keeping that in mind, we can now see that the authentic definition of the key guide is that it is a journey, not a destination. It is not something you find with a Venn diagram. It is actually the outcome. Being able to live as your authentic self in your every day life. So here we've explored that icky guy in many ways is simple because we understand that. Okay, let's break it down to the everyday level. What is it that you could be doing today that's going to help you be your authentic self. That is exactly why it is challenging. The things that are most simple in life are yet the most challenging because it's harder to do things when you understand that it is simple. 6. The 7 Ikigai Venn Diagram Gaps: I would like to do now is jump into the gaps that the Venn diagram has so that we can understand how we want to take action on the true definition of geeky guy. Now let's explore the seven gaps and the e-guide Venn diagram that it's important to be mindful of. One, it limits the scope to our professional lives. What does this mean? If we look at the Venn diagram, it talks about what you love, what the world needs, what you could be paid for, and what you're good at. We've seen is that a key guy is much more expansive, meaning it includes your personal and your professional life. And Iike guy, in truth, it has nothing to do with your professional life. It is more about who you are individually, and it really starts with you versus your professional life. It ties a reason with money. The Venn diagram notes that your reason for being is what you can be paid for. Of course, it is important to mention the importance of making a living and you do need to make money. However, this notion that the Japanese concept of reason for being is a framework they use is what you can be paid for is not true. Three, it fails to highlight the daily component. We explore that the authentic definition of achy guy includes that daily aspect. Important. Because we understand now that it's not necessarily these great grand goals that could give us a reason for being. But it's more about the daily actions that we take. This framework does not address that. It's based on external labels. You see here that what you love, what the world means, what you can be paid for and what you're good at. These are all external aspects and do not touch on the true essence of what He Qie Gei is. What I am good at, is very subjective. Perhaps I'm not necessarily the best singer in the world, but it brings me so much joy and it gives me so much happiness in my life. Being able to do that in my daily life can absolutely be Mikey guy. But this Venn diagram does not account for that. It is fixed. Well, we look at frameworks. They could be helpful in understanding certain situations, but it doesn't explore this nuance that we've seen in the authentic definition that it can change over time. You saw that someone's IQ guy was their great, great, great granddaughter. Of course, this wasn't her Aikido when she was 20 because she didn't have her great, great, great granddaughter. But these are all both true facts. You could have different inky guy in your lifetime limits or self-exploration process. Icky guy is not something that can be understood by the mind. What do I mean by that? Frameworks are often very powerful tools to help us understand and make sense of the world through our mind and mental processes. The self exploration process of Iike guy, however, not necessarily something that we use a framework on. It's more about being expansive, about having the ability to launder about question who you are. This framework actually limits that for us. Seven, it's a different purpose model. So I do really think it's important to give credit to analysis and NACA, who created this framework? 7. How Ikigai ties in with our well-being: Now let's explore how icky guy ties in with your overall well-being. Icky guy is very much an important part of who you are and your life's journey. Hawaii, I like to explain this is Iike guy and the last piece of this puzzle. The puzzle being your own life puzzle. Because we don't know however, the shape and size of it. It is important to recognize that it is there. But what we want to do actually is look at the other pieces of who you are. 8. The Japanese Wellness Puzzle: This is the puzzle that we want to take into account when we are looking at and understanding our AKI. Like I mentioned, achy guy is the last piece of the puzzle. However, we do not know the size or one. That's going to be. What we want to do is actually take a look at the other pieces of your holistic well-being that will guide us. The first being, presence and mindfulness. This is really important in terms of Japanese Inspired baldness. There are three traditional Japanese arts. This is subtle, cuddle and shuttle. So this flower and Japanese flower arrangement, Japanese tea ceremony and Japanese calligraphy. And these 2 thousand year Arts said to help us understand what it means to live a meaningful life. Being the moment. I've had about 15 years of training in Japanese calligraphy. And I am reminded of this every day. There are so many beautiful simple practices and principles in Japanese calligraphy that help us understand what it means to be fully present. And it is through this experience that you're able to apply and understand what it means to a near everyday life be present. Next, body and soul care. In Japanese culture, there is this idea that each human has a body and a soul to take care of. There's different ways and different needs of both. Let's take a look at body care. Body carries this idea that you want to take care of our bodies. It does so much for us every day. There are four main factors that we want to take care of when we're looking at our bodies. The first being nourishing food. How are you taking care of your body by feeding it nutrition and nutritious healthy food. Movement. This refers to this idea of daily overall movement. So this includes exercise, walking, your overall daily component that we want to consider. Rest, getting adequate sleep. Are you taking the time to rest your body? That is the third component. The last component is healthy relationship with our bodies. Know how do we work with our bodies to make sure that it comes from a loving place. That is a key component of quality care. Next, soul care. So when we talk about our soul, we're referring to this idea that each individual has three needs in terms of connection. The first bank personal connection. Do you feel as though you're taking the time to connect with yourself, doing things that bring you joy and taking that time for yourself. Next, the connection for community. Do you feel as though your personal relationships with your friends, your family, and your community are meant. Do you feel as though you can be fully connected, authentic, and have a deep sense of connection. Last but not least, with nature. This is this idea that take care of our souls. We have a longing to connect with nature. Japan has the principle and practice of Indian yoga, which is forest bathing. But it's really this appreciation that we come from Mother Earth and that it is important for us to be connected with nature by taking time for walks, to going on hikes, or to see the water, to see the ocean. And it really is this connection need that we must be mindful of. Next authenticity. This is this idea that your well-being is tied to being able to be your authentic self. However, what does that mean? In Japanese culture? We lean on this idea of Bobby's Hobby. Lobby Sabi is often used in a design contact, but it actually is more of a philosophy that is really tied to our overall well-being. Bobby Sabi is this appreciation that we are from mother nature and that it has three main principles. Nature is in permanent, it is imperfect, and it is incomplete. Because we are part of nature. We follow the same principles. In permanent. What does this mean? In nature means their seasons. There's also things that come to an end. For example, cherry blossoms, they blew, and then they fall after a week. That is part of nature. Humans. In terms of well-being, we follow the same principle. Meaning we are impermanent, where we have a life and death. And that it is important to recognize that. It is also important to recognize that because we're impermanent, we evolve over time, that we change over time. What holds true of who you were ten years ago can change and to change. This actually allows us to understand and appreciate how we can change over time. Second, imperfect. This is such a great one because I know from experience I've definitely was very much a perfectionist growing up. While it could drive you to excellence in many ways, in the long-term for longevity, it is not going to serve you. So nature is imperfect. Meaning, is there such thing as a perfect tree? Or is there a tree that is more perfect Over the next tree? No. Nature in and of itself. Everything is unique and everything else is as it should be. We don't necessarily say that there is a perfect, a flower that's more perfect than the other. It is this idea that to be authentically ourselves is to understand that we're not meant to be perfect. And that is what makes us authentic. Last but not least, incomplete. What does this mean in nature? To be complete in nature? So this is really this idea that there are seasons in nature. There's fall, spring, there's winter. And so it's always moving, always evolving process. And so to be authentic, it's not necessarily mean that one I achieve this, I will be enough. When I achieve this milestone, then I will be authentically good to go. That is not what it means to be authentic. Be authentic is to accept yourself for who you are, where you are at this moment. It is through this acceptance that we're able to understand what it means to be ourselves. Because in truth, authenticity comes from within us. And it is this appreciation that will help us understand that we are enough just as we are. Last but not least, Iike guys. So like I mentioned, the AQI is the last piece of this puzzle. But what we learned is that the true definition means that it is something where we could be authentically ourselves. And it is through our daily actions that makes us feel or life is worth flipping. What we want to do here is you cannot focus on your icky guy. That will not guide you to understand the key guy. It is actually about looking at the other pieces of the puzzle. First. Because this is going to help us understand who we are. 9. The 7 Ikigai Truths: So now let's take a look at what you can do today. Understanding the true definition of the Qie Gei. Xiang Gei is simple and expansive. I wanted to end this course with seven key takeaways that I would love for everyone to consider when understanding the true definition. First, it alleviates the pressure that we have to know and gives us permission to try. We explored that the second part of the key guy, which is worth living, has the explanation and definition and nuance that you anticipate and hope that your results will be worth it. This is key because you do not have to know that what you are doing is going to be worth it, or is your purpose or your reason for being. And it's actually meant to be like that. We want to do, however, is take action on it and try. That is what is the true definition that you could apply today? It gives room for you. Start with your core values. This is really great because we saw that in the Venn diagram, it really does focus on external labels and it starts us off in the wrong foot. The true definition of geeky guy is where you are the ultimate puzzle. It starts by understanding who you are. One thing I do want to be mindful of is that it does not mean that we're meant to be selfish. When we explored the puzzle, we saw that the soul care aspect of your overall well-being includes our connection with ourselves, with our community and our nature. This is simply the appreciation that you are not evaluated based on external labels. But it's more about starting with you at the center. Three, it gives us permission to evolve and innovate. Here we saw that you can change over time. We noticed that similar to nature you evolve. We are impermanent and we're meant to change over time. This actually gives us permission that are icky guy and the reason for being can change and will change. It helps us understand how our work and job can be different. This is really important because while there are often used interchangeably, your jaw and your work and stuff around. Perhaps your work that you do at home. Cleaning for cleaning your apartment, cleaning for your family. This is work, but it's not necessarily a job. However, perhaps you find it really important to you that you put in the work because you will care for your family. This is a 100% of part of the keychain that the Venn diagram does not address. This helps us give us a better framework and understanding that we should also assess our work as well as her job. Next expands or liked to personal and professional. The Venn diagram is typically use exclusively to explore your job. Your reason for being and doing for things and doing what you love in the context of work. What He Qie Gei. And truth is more than that. You're lucky guy uses you as the center, meaning you are so much more than just your professional career. You have a whole personal life and that it is important to see yourself holistically meaning your well-being is tied to not only your personal accomplishments, for your professional accomplishments. And it's really important that we take a lens. Both of them when expanding and exploring a reason for being. It connects us to our holistic well-being. Like I mentioned, we're so much more than our personal and professional life, but we also have that added component of body and soul care. So qi chi is all part of this bigger puzzle of who you are. And so by being aware of the fact that your life is worth living, then we can explore the other aspects of your puzzle. Then it breaks it down to the daily level for us. So we saw that achy has the added nuance that it often is used to explore and define daily actions and daily things. This is really important because it breaks it down and makes it much more achievable for us. 10. How Ikigai Can Empower You Today: All right, so now that we've explored this symbol and expansive definition of the seven key takeaways of what the true authentic definition of the key guy is for your project. What I would love for everyone to do is take a look at that puzzle of your overall well-being. An outline where you want to focus on. Then from there, outline one small action that you could take for yourself today. Because this is in true alignment with what He Qie Gei means and how we can empower you today. It is not the Venn diagram. It is through the action that you take at a daily level. I would love for everyone to outline it, to write it down into post it as part of their project for this course. 11. Wrap-up: This wraps up our course on Understanding API guys, authentic definition. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to explore this beautiful concept with you all today, I truly believe will empower you for the long term. This course, we first explored the origins story of the achy guy Venn diagram. Next, we looked at the authentic definition of geeky guy by taking a look at the hints that are hidden within the concept itself. We then explored the seven gaps that we want to be mindful of. If you have ended up using the EEG guy Venn diagram and wrapped up with the seven truths of Iike guy, as well as how it can empower you today. For your project. I'm very excited to learn which actual takeaway you will be taking today that will help define who you are through action. As this will help guide you to live a life of Iike guy.
