About This Class

Welcome to this comprehensive art tutorial, students will embark on a creative journey to explore the vibrant and ornate style of traditional Indian art, with a particular focus on depicting the peacock, a significant and revered symbol in Indian culture. This lesson is designed to help students develop a deeper understanding of the unique elements that define Indian artistic expressions, such as its vivid color palettes, intricate patterns, and symbolic motifs.

As the tutorial progresses, students will be guided through the process of creating an artwork that combines these traditional elements with modern artistic practices. The focus will be on integrating an abstract background, which will involve experimenting with swirling patterns and abstract shapes to complement the detailed rendering of the peacock. This background is not merely decorative but is designed to enhance the thematic depth of the artwork, reflecting concepts such as beauty, spirituality, and nature which are central to Indian art.

Practical demonstrations will include techniques such as layering, color mixing, and brushwork to achieve the rich textures and depth characteristic of Indian art. Students will also be encouraged to interpret these elements in a way that reflects their personal artistic style while staying true to the traditional roots.

By the end of this tutorial, students will have not only created a visually stunning piece of art but also gained valuable skills in blending traditional and contemporary art forms. This lesson aims to not only teach art techniques but also to inspire a greater appreciation and understanding of Indian cultural heritage through artistic expression.

1. Introduction: Creating intricate art is my favorite style of creating art. If you are anything like me, then dive in with me in this creative journey of colors, textures, creativity, and loads of fun. Hi. I'm Tina Kerpal. I'm a professional acrylic artist and an art instructor based in Dubai. Welcome to my creative place. I sell my original paintings and art prints, and I also do exhibit my artwork and art exhibitions. I'm really passionate about teaching art to my students. The joy of seeing happy faces after an artwork is priceless for me. My job as a teacher is not only to provide art lessons to my students, but also to provide a sense of happiness and satisfaction that comes with creativity. I have been painting with Acylyc for a long time now, and my love for Acylys has only increased. The acrylic medium is an ever changing art medium. With all the variety of medium eels and all the extra elements available in the market, I always loved painting with acylate. The process is so satisfying. It's almost like cooking. You start with one thing and add a little of this and a little of that until you get what you're looking for. Another thing I love about acrylic painting is how much scope I have to play around, especially when I'm working with textured background. Today, in this class, we will learn all about palette knife, how to create background using this versatile tool, how to add contrast in your work using layers, adding texture to your artwork using leaves, creating intricate artwork using simple lines, and how to make an artwork stand out. To create quick backgrounds for your art, using a palette knife is easy to create. Other than learning about backgrounds, you will also learn how to create texture using leaves. And we will learn simple techniques to paint your subject on the background. This art style is quick to create and helps me when I want to disconnect with the world. I want to create something which doesn't need too much attention. The background is easy to create. It's a fun process and it is extremely relaxing. The intricate details are for me to calm down. It's done with some simple lines. This class is good for bigners who want to create art eventually become a professional, as well as anyone who wants to create art to relax and enjoy the process. You can be in any profession, but at the end of the day, you need to create art to unwind your day and channelize your thoughts. If that's you, then this class is also for you. This quick art style is easy to create to give to a family member or a friend or to be displayed on your wall. If you are as excited as I am, then let's get started. 2. Class Orientation: In today's session, we will paint a traditional style peacock on an abstract background. In this artwork, I'm combining two of my favorite art styles. One, creating an abstract background and second to create intricate art. Working with lines gives me a sense of satisfaction. This is quite meditative for me. The best part about creating art in this style is a process is really enjoyable, relaxing and distressing, and it feels great to create these abstract backgrounds. I'm sure you are all excited about today's session and can't wait to get started. But first, let me tell you all about today's session. At backgrounds are a great way for Big nurse to start learning. But if you don't follow instructions or do not understand the process before jumping into it, you may end up creating something which wasn't your goal. For this reason, I have carefully designed each and every step to make you understand the process and all that it takes to make an artwork successful. For this lesson, you will need some acrylic paints of your choice plus black and white colors. Golden paint, water containers, some brushes, palette knife, and some leaves. In case you don't have a palette knife, you can use dried brushes or an old credit card to add your texture. But remember, the results will vary with all the different supplies you will use. Try experimenting. In case if you don't like the look, once the acrylics have dried, you can start over. Acrylics are an extremely forgiving metium. That's one of the reasons why I love to paint with them. They give me a freedom to experiment without any fear of spoiling my artwork. If I don't like the results, I can paint over it once it's dried. Remember, to click a pick of your artwork and upload it to the project gallery so that I can see it and give you feedback. Once you are ready with your art supplies, let's get started with our foundation layer in the next lesson. See you there. 3. Gesso Layer: The night before I start painting a canvas. I always apply a layer of Gesso on my canvas. So gives a professional finish to my canvas and also adds a protective layer between my canvas and paints so that the paints do not get absorbed in the fabric of the canvas. In case, if Gesso is not easily available, you can use thick white paint and wait for it to dry completely. 4. First Layer: For this layer, you can use any light color paint. You can use two or three shades of any color. We don't want our background to be really dark. This might be seen underneath the top layers. Colors you use for this sets the mood of the painting. This base layer makes a whole lot of difference to the tone of the painting. Like if you decide to use dark colors of the painting, it will add more depth to the overall feel of the art. If you choose cool colors, it will add something soothing effect to the painting. I like to experiment with different colors as my first layers and observe what kind of mood it sets for my canvas. Observation is the most important skill in art. I have over the years realized that students who observe carefully what colors have what kind of impact on an artwork are able to create a lot better artwork as they eventually are able to set the right mood for your painting. To practice observation while creating art, firstly, slow down and step back and start analyzing your artwork. A lot of thoughts will appear in your mind, start interpreting your thoughts at every step. This will make a huge difference to your art. For this artwork, just take any color, add it to it and create different tones and apply to the canvas using a bruh. Try to get a smooth finish, blend all the shades together properly. Once the entire surface is covered with our paints, leave it to dry completely. In case, if you want it to dry faster, use a blue dryer. Palette knife painting is a style where you create an artwork using palette knife instead of a brush. The artwork created using this technique is heavily textured and expressive. Now let's understand the process of applying colors with palette knife. Palette knife painting gives a lot of confidence to artists. You don't feel at a big level when you apply paint using this tool. Okay. Things to remember, before you start painting with palette knife is not to mix any water or medium to your paints as we may want a thick consistency of paints. Do not use fluid paints. Use the pain that you can squeeze out of a tube without mixing them with water. Otherwise, you won't be able to see any textured effect created using palette knife. Another thing is to use palette knife with a strong handle. It can be a plastic or a wooden handle, but it has to be firm. Use palette knife and thick pole stroke to get the desirable effect. Thick paint once applied helps to maintain the shape of the effect. Once your previous layer is completely dried, you can take different colors on your palette. Here, I'm using different shades of blue, some light and some dark. Now I'm picking my color with my palette knife and applying it on the canvas. I'm trying to spread the color as much as possible. Every time I'm spreading the color, it gives this unique texture on my canvas. Just keep going using different colors till your entire surface is covered. You can overlap these layers for extra texture, take colors on your life and apply it just using the side of the knife. Apply paint on the canvas with the palette knife as you will apply butter on the bread. Take the paint and spread it on the canvas and flatten it as much as possible. Dragging it to pull out all the colors. Each time you pick a color, use a different blue to get the variation. Use only the back of the knife for this effect. Flatten the knife on the canvas and spread it. This way, you get the textured effect, we are aiming for. Someday try creating this texture on a large canvas. The effect will be absolutely mind blowing. But for now, hold the brush handle firmly while spreading the pains. Take a lot of paint on your knife before pressing it on through the canvas. If there isn't enough paint, you might not get the proper effect. Okay. Though we are flattening the paint as much as possible, it still takes longer to dry than when you apply paint using a bruh. So keep it aside so that it's not disturbed till it's completely dried. Once it's dried, move on to the next step. In the next video, we will apply textured effect using leaves. I can't wait to see you there. 5. Leaves Texture: I am already liking how this artwork is turning out. You can see the beautiful colors in harmony with each other. The texture created by them is giving extra dimension to our art. Now is the time to add some more texture to our artwork. This time, I'm using different types of leaves from my garden. To create this texture, just take your leaf and add contrast color from your background and apply it to the leaf. Don't add too much color. Otherwise, you won't get a nice texture. Remove all the extra paint from the leaf. Now, press the leaf onto the canvas, paint facing towards the canvas, press it firmly from all sides, and then lift it up to reveal this beautiful pattern underneath. Don't you think it looks truly amazing. Let me show you again. Take your leaf, gently apply some paint on it, press the paint side of the canvas, gently press from all sides and remove it to see a beautiful pattern. You can press with one leaf a few times as well till all the paint is completely. Keep going till you have leaf pattern all over the panel. Don't overdo it. It's not our main subject. Instead, it's just a part of the background. Once you are satisfied, leave it to dry. 6. Peacock Sketch: For this artwork, I'm planning to create a peacock sketch. You can paint anything you want. Or maybe for this artwork, create the same one with me. For the next artwork, create some sketch of your own. Drawing is the backbone of any artwork. We need to make sure that all the lines are smooth and in connection with each other and convey the same mode as our artwork. The movement of lines, they flow, the thick and thin lines altogether, speak about the artwork, gives character to your art and adds emotions to it. Firstly, I'm using my pencil to sketch this on my canvas. You can trace it if you want. Once you are satisfied with your drawing, use a thin brush and black paint to outline the sketch. To get thin lines, use your brush like a pen or a pencil. Keep the tip of the brush as straight as possible. Don't bend it flat on the surface. Practice this on a rough paper before doing it on the canvas. Drawing a few lines and marks on the paper will give you the confidence to work on the canvas directly with the brush and paint. The reason I paint with brush instead of a marker is that with the brush, I get variation in my lines. I get lines, I get thin lines. Also, my lines break unevenly at certain points. This also adds character to my artwork and makes my artwork look alive. When I create these lines with a marker, I get a uniform look. As an artist, I do not like that uniform look. I'd like to add more life to my artwork. Using a brush to create a line makes my artwork look more lively. If using a brush is a stugle for you, initially, you can use a marker to make it easier, but keep practicing with a brush, and when you are confident, paint with a brush on the canvas. We need to practice enough as we don't need to get thick lines. Otherwise, we'll not be able to get intricate lines in our artwork. We will make our work. It will make our work clumsy. To avoid that, we should make sure that our brush is thin and we are practiced enough on paper before we move on to the can. Once you're confident get started on the canvas. Keep doing it with patients. Don't break your line too much. Try and get straight smooth strokes as much as possible. Don't get disheartened if you don't get it. That's Keep practicing till you get it right. Once the entire piccock is completed, time for some detailing. The next video is all about detailing. See you there. 7. Detailing: I absolutely love to do small detailed work while creating art. To work on small section with all minute detail is meditative for me. I can spend hours working on a small segment of a painting, working minutely on every detail. It is quite therapeutic for me. I deeply enjoy this process. Working on intricate details gives me immense satisfaction. Mm. For this artwork, I'm using thin brush, but you can use fine tip pen if you aren't very comfortable with the brushes. I want you to keep this step simple because once it is simple, you can enjoy its meditative effects. I'm using lines in various directions to fill the entire sketch. You can doodle inside this peacock with various types of lines and shapes. But I want you to keep it simple. That's why I am just using lines and changing the direction of these lines inside every now and then. Using lines in the same direction doesn't add depth to my artwork. It looks monotonous and boring. For any artwork to look eye catching and appealing, it needs to have the variations. Too much uniformity in a section can make an artwork lose its appeal. When we add an artistic element to it, the same object can be seen differently by different people. In a realistic drawing, a pickock remains a pickock for everyone. There isn't a hidden meaning to it. But in an abstract structure, each and every element of art speaks. It speaks to the audience in the way they can see it. I have often found this experience absolutely amazing when people came up with different meanings of the same artwork. Keep going till you finish each section of your drawing. Don't be in a rush to finish this step. Take your time, fall in love with every line you create. Slowly and gently finish the entire detailing. In order to add dip to our detailing add thick and thin lines, the variation in lines add extra dip to our artwork. Keep going till you are satisfied with the results. Once your piccock is completely ready, it's time for some golden paint. Let's move on to the next video for this step. See you there. 8. Let's add some golden: Our artwork looks complete now, but to add some extra element to it, I'm using my golden color to paint the face and the tips of the pickok We have our abstract background ready. The background is full of colors and textures. There is a lot of shades and emotions in the background. On the top of the background, there is a pickup with flowy lines and a lot of details. Now to bring all the elements together and to bring out the subject from the background, we will use this golden paint. To get the bright golden look, we will need to do at least two coats of golden paint. When the first coat is completely dried, we will add another layer of it. The golden color is a warm color and adds contrast to a blue background. In any artwork by using different colors, we add individuality to it. You may use a different color instead of golden. You may use a red or a yellow or an orange, but I choose golden as it represents magic. This is not a realistic pickock. This is my artistic expression of a piccock. It's abstract and it's magical. That's why I used a golden color to express my feeling for this artwork. It also makes my artwork look attractive. I wanted to add an eye catching element to it and hence I chose the golden color. 9. White highlights: To finish this artwork, we are trying to pull out the subject a little more from the background. We are doing that so that people look at my subject before getting lost in the background and all the details and all the emotions of this artwork. We want the pickok to stand out and make it visible even from the distance. We want to do that so that the picker gets the first attention from the audience. An important element of art is called eye movement. We are doing this to define the eye movement of our audience. When we see our artwork, it's the artist who decides which element of his painting we should appreciate first, and he decides the order of our eye movement. Here in this painting, we want the audience to see the pickup first and then focus on the details and then move the focus towards a background and then slowly, slowly discover the different elements of background like the different shades of blue and the texture created by the palette knife. Eventually, we want the audience to discover the textured effect of the leaves. So in order to bring out the pickock from the background, we are simply giving a white outline to the entire picco. Using a white paint and a brush, we are gently and smoothly going around the pickock covering each and every section of it. Take your time to finish this step. Don't be in a rush to finish it as we want to give the outline as smooth finish as possible. Once you are done with this step, your canvas is ready to be displayed. See you in the next video for a quick recap. 10. Final Thoughts: Congratulations. Your artwork is ready to be displayed, someplace where it can be appreciated. I hope you had as much fun creating this artwork as I did. In today's artwork, we created art using a palette knife, learned how to create abstract backgrounds, learned to create textures, using simple objects, learned about eye movement, and also understood how to bring contrast to our artwork. The key takeaway of this class is to enjoy the process, fall in love with every line you create in slow smooth movement. Make an artwork enjoyable using colors that bring happiness to you. I'm so happy that together we achieve this and I'm excited about your creations. I can't wait to see your magical creations. Please share your artworks in the project gallery for me to see your creativity and to inspire your fellow artists as well.
