About This Class

This is the first in a developing series called: Illustrator for Pattern Design.  It is perfect for the beginner student, as well as the more intermediate.

Each pattern type, Chevron and Cloisonne, starts with a complete walk-through of the Motif creation, ending in multiple variations of pattern repeats. 

I will be covering a lot of tools and techniques in Illustrator, but here are some of the things I'll be covering specifically:

1. Intro: Hi, everyone very excited to bring you a new class in a developing Siri's called Illustrator for Pattern Design. This particular class will cover the fun and popular pattern types Chevron and closing A for each category. Otto build out the motifs step by step, create variations for each, which will all be used to create multiple repeating patterns. Thes is, some of the things will be covering in these tutorials plenty of tips and techniques with a lot of emphasis on the live paint pattern maker and re color artwork tools. So come check this out. You're gonna love making these patterns. 2. Chevron: Artboard and Guides: The first thing I want to do is change my current our board to a specific size, in this case, four inches by four inches. When I select the airport tool for my tools panel, I can see the dotted lines around it, and at this point I can click into the width and height boxes in my control panel and manually entered the exact measurements. This is not a necessary step to create the elements for the Chevron, but it allows me to explain some useful features I want to take advantage of, in this case, using rulers to create guides. So with my rollers turned on, I can clearly see that the top left corner of my art board is set to zero at both the horizontal and vertical axis. At any time, you could manually place the syrah reference by dragging from this top left corner down, and you'll see how that changes here now because I'm going to be creating guides at the one inch to inch and three inch marks vertically and one inch and two inch marks horizontally. I can very clearly and easily see these measurements and have a nice, well defined area toe work in knowing that I want my final motif to only be four inches wide. Another way to do this is to switch to the art board panel. You can click on the Icon for Art Board one to open the art board Options Dialog, where here you have even more controls and you can manually enter the new size. Here I'll demonstrate a couple different ways to set up guides. First, I want to create a new layers that will only be for my guides. I'll name my first layer guides in this new layer motif. This is really useful because you can either hide them or lock them at any time. If necessary. You can drag a guide out from the side or top ruler, in this case from the side to set my first vertical guide because I wanted precisely at one inch. As I get close to the one inch mark, I need to hold down the shift key, and it will snap to that tick mark. If I open my transform panel, I can see the exposition is exactly one inch at any point. You can also double click on an area in the rulers to place a guide with that guide selected, Open your transform panel and you can manually enter the exact measurement. Then repeat these steps to place all your guides. Once I have all my guides set, I'll be using the pencil to create the motif for my pattern. 3. Chevron: Pen Tool and Stroke: So now I have my pencil selected and four do anything. I want to make sure I have a stroke. But no Phil. So my stroke is set to black, which is fine for now. But with my fill box selected, I need to click none. And what's great about having guides is that when I hover over the area where I want to place my first anchor point, smart guys will say Intercept for each anchor point. I want a place. I'll click at that Intersect point, and I'll continue across the art board until he reached the right edge. Once I'm done, I can either hit, escape or go back to my selection tool before moving on. I want to talk about colors real quick. I always have a set of colors. I like to use my favorites, so I already have those colors in my swatches panel. But in a later video, I'll be using re color artwork tool, and before I can use that, I'll need these colors to be in a color group. To do this, I'll select me first watch, shift, click my last and choose this new color group icon, which places them in a folder. If you don't have a group of colors to work with already, you can come up to window color themes. Click the Explorer tab and type in any search terms you like. If you see a group of colors you like, click the three Ellipses and choose Addis watches and Illustrator puts them in a folder for you. So now I can select my motif and pick a stroke color. Next. I want to change the stroke. Wait now because I don't know what measurements you are stroke increments or set to. I'll show you quickly how to change that in preferences in case years are not set two points with preferences. Open click on units and here's where you can change the measurement setting for strokes. Now just click the drop down from the stroke on my control panel and choose eight points, so it's much thicker. I also want to convert this from a stroke path into a filled object because next I'll be offsetting this path, so I'll open object, expand and say OK for Phil and stroke 4. Chevron: Offset Path and Pattern: this element alone would make a Chevron, but I want to add to it by creating a larger version of the shape around it. To do this, I need to offset the path while it's still selected. Go to object path, offset path. The dialogue box pops up and you want to turn the preview on. Click into the text box for offset, and then you can use your up or down arrow key to change the increment. With preview on, I can determine how much space I want around the first shape. And here I went up 2.1 to 5, and that's where wanted. When you click off, it may look like nothing happened, but if you switch to your direct selection tool or white arrow and you hover, you not only see it, but you can select it independently. You can definitely choose another color for this nested shape, but for this demo, I want to create a tense of my original color Instead. Before you create a tent, you need your swash to be a global swatch. If your swash does not have this little white triangle in the bottom corner, you'll need to convert it to global for these colors I grabbed from color themes. I can see they're not global. So for each one, I'm going to double click to bring up the Swatch Options Dialog and click into the box next to Global Next. Repeat this for each color you might use. Once it's a global swatch, you can open the color panel and you will see this tint slider where you can see a preview . 5. Pattern Maker Tool: Now that my motif is finished, I want to create a repeat pattern with it while selected goto object pattern make to enter the pattern editing mode. Once you click OK, you'll see a parents watch was created for you in your swatches panel. The first thing I want to do is change the spacing. To do so, you need to slug this icon called the Pattern Tile Tool, which will give you a bounding box. I'll grab this top right point and dragged down to tighten the space. Next, I want to zoom in pretty close to where these two edges meat again. I'll grab that top point and drag to the left this time until they're overlapping. It may not be perfect, but so long as the side edge is straight, it will look good. You can see from the preview what that looks like. We're not done making this a clean repeat yet, but I'm going to click done to show you what I have so far. I'll drag out a rectangle to the side here and choose a background color. The pattern itself will have a transparent background, so I'll copy and paste this background. Edit copy paste in front and fill that copy with my new pattern. Swatch. You can clearly see there is a problem with the repeat because of this nested shape being a different color. So in the next video, I'll show you how to fix that. 6. Chevron: Fixing the Pattern: First, we need to re enter this pattern swatch, which I'll do by double clicking the swatch itself. Next. I want to point out the section called The Overlap by default. This is set toe left in front, so I need to make a copy of this nested shape with my direct selection tool. I'll select this necid shape. The far left edge and option are all. Drag it over to the right while holding shift. Until this shape overlaps the dimmed copy. I'll spend some time trying to readjust the placements, so it appears to sit on top of the dimmed version. Now, when I click done, you don't see the gap. I'll go back and show you what happens. If you were to copy and move this to the left instead of the right, you'll still see that gap unless you changed your overlap to right in front. I'll demonstrate this again. Reenter pattern Edit mode. Select with direct selection tool option. All dragged the copy over until it's left edge overlaps with the adjacent left edge. You may have to fiddle with the placement of the overlapping areas, but you'll know when it looks right from this dimmed preview 7. Chevron Variation 1: I'll be using the same motif from the last tutorial, So I still have my guides to work with. I want to create different segments within this shape so I can add different colors to different areas. I'm gonna grab my line segment tool and using this first guide on the left, I'm gonna click and shift drag down along the guide. Next, I'll hold down Option or Ault and shift to drag a copy of this line to the other guideline . Select both lines and with the stroke box active. Change the stroke, wait to two points and expand the strokes to filled objects with object. Expand for this next part, I want to zoom in so I can see just of section with the guides in the lines. Now just make sure to select everything and grab the sheep builder tool. With this tool, I'll be able to delete the parts of the lines sticking out. To do this, you need to hold down the altar option key and then click. Repeat this for each portion sticking out, you may need to zoom in a little closer to make sure there are no little pieces still sticking out next to be using the live pay NITEL, which is located within the same tool group as the Shape boulder with this tool. First select a color and then click on one of the areas to make it active. I wanna have these two sides the same color as well as these little pieces. Dump this new color into this area on either side, and one more color will go in this last middle section. Again. I want to expand everything. This time I'll choose object, live pain, expand, and the last thing I want to do is merge all these little pieces, so it's a little more compact For this. I'll switch to my direct selection tool, selecting each piece with this color and in the Pathfinder panel, choose this first option merge. 8. Chevron Variation 2: The Motif: for this next variation. Ah, once again work with this previously created motif, with the guides already set up. I'll use my pencil this time with a stroke and no Phil and click once on the first guides somewhere above and click the next point at this intersection again. I'll change my stroke way to two points. You might have to de select and select again. Now, instead of copping this line over to the right, I'm going to rotate it. First, open the rotate tool click at this intersection to place the reference point and dragged the line to the left holding shift to constrain angle to 45 degrees. Now I want to reflect this angled line over to the opposite side, and again, my guides will be very useful. Switch to the reflect tool and this time option were all click at the Centre Guide interception. The dialogue box will pop up, and the settings should be a vertical reflection at 90 degrees and hit copy quickly. Walk through the same steps is the previous variation. First, I'll expand everything so there are no strokes anymore. And to remove these pieces out, grab the shape builder tool and with the option or all key held down, click on each one to remove it, I'll switch to the live pain tool to add color. You can experiment with different colors for any of these segments that are highlighted, although for this particular Matif, I want this inside shape to be the same all the way across. So at this dark red to the entire strip to match the example I have below, I'll add green to each of these side edges and this tan color to each segment above and below here to finish, I'll first zoom in a bit and focus on the remaining black line that divided these segments . This little piece in the middle needs to be the dark red color, but for the other pieces, you can either choose green for both or the tan color. I'm gonna choose the green color in this case with my life paint tools still active. I want to stay is doomed in and get over to the opposite side. So if I hold down my space bar, I'll get my hand icon and I can click and move over. Once again, I will repeat those previous color choices to quickly zoom out. You can choose Commander Control zero to jump back, and once again I need to expand this life pain object. This time I'll choose object life paint expand. 9. Chevron Variation 2: The Pattern: creating repeat pattern with this motif will be very similar to the original Chevron pattern. This time, instead of having to move a copy of this entire inside strip, I'll only have to move this small segment so once again, select all an object pattern make to enter the pattern editing mode, Select the pattern tile tool and dragged down to close the top spacing and move the left corner point towards the left to overlap the edges. Take your time with this and check the above preview to see what it will look like. - Then you can switch to the direct selection or white arrow. Select just this one little segment an option or ault. Drag it over to sit on top of the stemmed area. And remember to use the preview above to make sure it looks lined up. Because it's so much fun to create even more variation. We're going to take this pattern and use the re color. Are work tools again? You need to have swatches that are already in a color group. If you pull colors from the color themes as we did before, you'll be ready to go, so I'll select everything, including my background color and click the icon in my control panel for the re color tool . Once this opens, you'll see on the right all your color groups that wish time. You can click on one to apply it. My favorite thing to do now is to click this randomize button, and you can keep clicking to see all the numerous variations. When you like one, just click OK, and it will create a new swatch with those colors. One thing to keep in mind, though, is the background color will not be saved with the patterns watch, so you would need to apply that separately. You can repeat this is many times as you like and get multiple variations. 10. Cloisonne: Live Shapes: first thing I need to do is create a square with the rectangle tool selected. I'll hold option or all and shift as I drag to confine the shape to a square. I'm also going to remove the Phil and keep the stroke black for now, because this is what's called a live shape. You can see there are these little circles and every corner called widgets, which allow for quick shaped transformations. When I hover over any widget, you'll see a preview of a corner variation by default is a rounded corner. So when I start dragging, I can convert each corner to a rounded shape. That's not what I want for this motif those So we need to change the corner type setting. At this point, when you have any shape selected, you have a couple options available to make changes. The first is this Shape Properties panel You can open from the control panel, allowing you to easily change your corner properties. And if you switch your direct selection tool, white Arrow and clicked anywhere in this shape, you could select any or all points and access this live corners dialogue and make additional changes. But I'm going to use this shape properties for this motif. So will open that dialogue box and a couple of things to point out. If you're starting with the square and you haven't even touched the widgets yet, you will see this type of preview. Even when you change the corner type, it stays the same. So I suggest you drag a tiny bit with any widget, making sure all four corners drag together so that the shape becomes activated if you will . Now, in the preview, you will see the preview of the corners change, and you can now pick a different style for each. I want to change each corner to this option called the Inverted Round, and you will see a preview of the new shape. Now all I have to do is continue dragging widget, changing all four corners together until it snaps to this final shape. To finish the actual motif, I'll grab my lips tool and drawing from the center, point out, holding shift an option or all draw a circle that snaps to the edges again. I want to remove the Phil and just keep the stroke 11. Cloisonne: Live Paint: Now I have my motif. I want to add color again. I'll be using the live paint tool with the whole motif selected. Choose a life pain tool. Pick your first color and click anywhere inside to activate and dumped the color. At this point, you can have fun choosing as many as five different colors for each closed segment. You can also change the stroke color at this point. First, you need to switch to your stroke box and pick a color. Once you have the stroke box active, you can hold down, shift and hover over stroke until you see this brush icon, and then you can click to change the stroke color. Also, if you don't feel like having hold shift down every time you change your stroke, you can double click the tool and click on the paint strokes option in the dialog box. Once I have established the colors I want, I will expand this so it's no longer a lot of effect. Object life paint expand once it's expanded its no longer live pain object, but you can still change the colors. One way is to click each color segment with your direct selection or white Arrow and choose another swatch. But you can also drag and drop colors from the swatches panel onto each segment of your motif. I'll do this now with a new set of colors that I chose from color themes from a Moroccan theme. Next to change the strokes. I'm going toe ungroomed this a couple times, so when I can just click the strokes independently, I can choose a new stroke color. 12. Cloisonne: The Pattern: I'm going to use the pattern maker tool again to create a quick pattern with this motif selected choose object pattern make. I like the grid option for this, and I don't even need to change the spacing. But what I would like to do at this point is add in a background color, so it's not transparent. First, I'm going to click the draw behind Mood located down here, so whatever I add next will automatically go behind this motif. I'll pick a fill color that I want for the background, and I will change the stroke to none, grabbing my rectangle tool and zooming in a little closer, I'll shift drag to make it a square from where it says intercept down to the right edge of the boundary box, releasing when it says intercept. And so long as the entire area is covered, there will be no gaps. If there were a small gap, you would just manually dragged the square over to close it. So when I test my pattern by dragging out a rectangle and choosing my new swatch, it will already have background color. I do think this pattern is too large, so to scale it down a double click my scale tool unchecked transform objects leaving on lea transformed pattern. And in this text box, I'll use my down arrow key to make it smaller. 13. Cloisonne variation 1: I have a couple fun ways to create some variations on additional complexity. Using this same motif. The first involves adding additional colors. And to start that off, I first need to copy my original motif a couple times. I'll scale this down a bit to copy this first. Wanna hold down the option all key and drag over until it snaps in place. Then I'll hit control or command D to duplicate that same action. Now select all three of these motifs and turn them into a live pink route. So instead of having five segments to add color to, I have a total of 15. There are so many ways to go about this, so I'll just show you some examples of different options and then feel free to go and play with the variations. So here are some examples of repeat patterns using those different coloring options and staying with the default grid layout. Next, they'll demonstrate how easy it is to change the look of the pattern. By changing the rupee type from grid to buy row, you can either double click and existing swatch, jumping you into the pattern editing mode and change this pattern type two brick by row, replacing that previous watch were. While you're in pattern editing mode, you can first choose. Save a copy, say okay and okay and then cancel. You will now have created a brand new swatch, which is a duplicate double. Click this duplicate and make your changes, so you'll now have a swatch for the grid layout and the brick pyro. You may just want to adjust the spacing for the brick by road to tighten any gaps. 14. Cloisonne Variation 2: The Motif: This next variation definitely adds to the complexity of this pattern. Again, I'll start with the same motif from before, but this time I'll be breaking it apart with the whole motif selected. I'll open my Pathfinder panel and choose the divide option. Next, we need to ungroup this and de-selected. Now when I click on this section, for example, I can remove it from the rest of the motif independently. I'm just going to take this one piece and delete the rest. I'm going to straighten this piece by Shift, dragging it up is that will constrain the angle to 45 degrees. I'll select my Rotate tool and option or Alt click into the center of this element. I want to type in 90 degrees and choose Copy to get this effect. I also want to add a little flower element into the center of this motif. I'll start by drawing out a circle and swapping the fill and stroke so it only has a fill color. I'll switch to my Direct Selection Tool and drag just this bottom anchor point down for a bit. Then while this point is still selected, I'll change it to a corner point for my control panel. I also want a little circle below that. And instead of the ellipse tool, I'm going to select my Blob Brush, increase my brush size using the right bracket key and click to place it. With my smart guides, I'll be able to line this element to the center of the petal. This time, I will use my Reflect tool to add more petals. With this petal selected, I'll choose the reflect tool and option. Click in about the center of this dot. I want a horizontal reflection. Now I'll select both of these. Click the reflect tool again, put the reference point in that same spot while holding down option again. And I'll manually type in 45 degrees. Select all, and group these together, and then reduce the size. I'm going to make this element a little larger because I want to place this little flower inside. I'm going to center it first selecting it, then selecting one of these pieces, and clicking again on that same piece to define it as a key object. Now, I'll center this by selecting the Horizontal Align Center and Vertical Align Center from my control panel. 15. Cloisonne Variation 2: Add Color: Once again, I'm going to use live paint to add color to this motif. In order to get the particular look I'm going for, I need to keep everything except the inside flower, the same color. Again, I want to expand this so it's no longer a live effect. Next, I want this motif to have two strokes. And for that, I'll be working with the appearance panel. Before that, I want to ungroup everything until I can select the stroke independently. If I were to keep everything grouped, it would affect the inside flower strokes as well and I don't want that. So go to object, ungroup a couple of times until I can select the strokes only. And you'll see the stroke color and the stroke box. At that point, I'll open the appearance panel. Click down here on add new stroke, which will bring up the stroke options. I'm going to pick a new color and change the weight to two points. I again select, Add New Stroke, which will be placed under the first one. I'll pick a new color, and this time I'll choose six points for the weight. This will be the stroke behind the first one, and you will see the extra weight on either side. 16. Cloisonne Variation 2: The Pattern : Once again, I'll use this motif to create a repeat pattern with Object Pattern make to get the look I want for this pattern, I do want to rotate this on a 45-degree angle. So selected, I'll hover my cursor at the corner for these little arrows and holding Shift, I'll turn it once. Next I need to close the gaps by clicking the pattern tile tool and dragging the handles to the left and down until they're touching. Now to test it out, drag out a rectangle and pick a background color. Then edit, copy paste in front and select this new swatch. If you want to make the pattern repeats smaller, just double-click the scale tool, uncheck the Transform Objects box, and lower the number either with the down arrow key or manually type lower percentage for this particular pattern, It's really fun to use the Recolor Artwork tool and to really see the kinds of variations you can get. Firstly, make sure your colors are in a color group. When you pick colors from color themes, they place them in a folder for you. So you could go grab a whole bunch of different color schemes and test these out. Make sure to select both the background and the pattern first. Then in the control panel, you can select the re-color artwork icon, bringing up the control center. All your color groups can be accessed over here on the right side. For each one you select the colors will be applied. My favorite option for cycling through these colors is with this randomly change color order option. Just click to change things around and keep clicking to see lots of additional options. When you see something you like and you click Okay, a new swatch will be created in your swatches panel. It won't save the background color with that swatch, but the colors and the pattern will be saved. I was especially interested in getting an effect like this where you can really see all these circles. It helps to have a pallet with more contrast going from light to dark. And you may have to click many times to get to one that really fits the look. But it's really fun and there are so many options to choose from. 17. Final Project: the class has come to an end, but now it's time for a final project. This is where you get to show us your beautiful patterns with your favorite colors. This project has a couple options. You can either watch the walk through for creating a mock up phone case. Or you can choose to work with the attached template, which has three cases ready to go. If you want to use the template, just skip the next video and jumped to the pattern fills. 18. Final Project: Mock Up Template: start by selecting the rectangle tool and clicking once on the art board. I'm gonna enter these exact measurements here, making sure this link icon is off 2.64 inches for the with and 5.44 inches for height. I'm just going to start dragging a widget in for an approximate amount of roundness. Really? Not very far. Next, I want to manually set my zero reference point tow line up with the left edge of this case because I want to place one guide for the next step. First, I need to have my rulers arm you continues control, command are or view showed rulers. I'll drag out one vertical guide precisely at this 0.5 inch mark holding down shift to snap it in place. Using this guide, I'll select my rectangle tool again and with my cursor hovering over that guide. Ah, hold down option or auld and draw little rectangle. If you prefer the whole to be on the other side, you can set your guide to two inches instead of 20.5 inches. Once again, we'll around the corners of this shape first, zooming in closer. Just grab this top rate widget and dragon all the way to the point where you can't drag any further. I'll remove my guide by selecting it and hitting delete. I'm gonna add a stroke to my case. Black is fine and I'll choose two points. Right now, this little shape is just sitting on top of the larger shape. If I draw a rectangle in back, you'll see that. But I really want this shape to punch a hole through the larger shape. Instead, before I could do this, I'll lock this rectangle. So with both of these selected, open the Pathfinder panel and choose the second option called Minus two Front. So now you can see through to the background. The last thing I want to do is add a drop shadow, and I'll be using the appearance panel for this. Open your appearance panel. Click the F X button for effects at the bottom and style eyes Drop shadow. Make sure your previews turned on. I'm gonna make one tweet to the default settings so it doesn't look so harsh.
