Introduction to Fundamental Knowledge (Ocarina): Hey friends, welcome to the first video of the cost fundamental knowledge. This section is for anyone, whether you have an Ocarina or not, I'll cover everything you need to know before buying an Ocarina and provide cultural contexts about different types of Ocarina. However, I still recommend you watching videos in this section. Thank you so much for taking the course. I hope it will be useful in your journey to learn this amazing instrument. 3. Introduction To The Ocarina and How To Properly Hold It: In this lesson, I'll provide a brief history of the Ocarina and demonstrate how to haul it. The Ocarina is a small wind instrument that has been around for thousands of years and is believed to have originated in Ancient China. It has gained popularity in recent decades due to its unique sweet sound and references in popular culture and video games. A little known fact is that the Ocarina played an important role in World War one. It was used as a communication tool by the French, Italian, and British soldiers to signal for 8.1 of incoming artillery shells and gas affects the Ocarina is not just a solo instrument, it can be played in ensembles with other Ocarina players. These ensembles have become increasingly popular in recent years to clean the Ocarina, rinse it, but do not submerge it in water. Made sure to dry before playing it again. Now let's practice holding Ocarina and covering its holes. Place your left hand on the fatter part of the Ocarina and your right hand should be placed so that the sharp tip of Ocarina points away from you. Start by placing a thumbs behind the greenness and the left index finger on the first hole here, followed by a left middle finger on the second hole. And your left ring finger on the third hole, and your left pinky finger on the fourth hole next covered a host if a right index finger over here, right middle finger over here, right ring finger over here. And right pinky finger. Note, if you have a tough whole ocarina like I do, ignore the mini holes and assign those are used for advanced modes that we won't cover in this course. So make sure you don't cover them. Now, do this exercise in the opposite direction. Remove your right pinky, followed by a right ring finger, so on and so forth. Take note when you lift the right pinky finger from the bottom hole of the Ocarina and lifting or right ring finger off the Ocarina. Practice this habit of putting your right pinky onto the Ocarina at a site for support. When you lift your fingers from the bottom, two are coronal holes like this. Now, this is a bad example. This is a good example. Mainly spec this instinctual when handling this ocarina and avoid lifting both right pinky and ring finger off your Ocarina because there would be enough support. Think of it like a seesaw. Down, up, down, down, down, down, down. We'll cover more on this later in the course. That's it for this lesson. And I'll see you in the next video. 4. Types of Ocarinas To Know: In this lesson, I'll share six types of entrepreneurs for you to know. There are many different types of the instrument. So be sure to buy the correct ones for this course. Once you learn one type of Ocarina, you can easily learn the other types of Ocarina as they're all pretty much the same transverse Ocarina, also known as the sweet potato or greener, due to its shape, the transverse Ocarina is the most popular types among all are coroners. You played by a holding it horizontally, blowing into hole on the top and covering finger holes on the bottom. It comes in various sizes and keys. And we'll be using this type of Ocarina for the costs in line or Karina, similar to the transverse ocarina, The inline or Ocarina has finger holes arranged in a straight line. It's more compact and easier to play due to its smallest size, multi chambered Ocarina. This type has multiple chambers of ring, a wider range of notes, although they are challenging to play that design for professional players, pendant Ocarina, this small and lightweight or Karina is one around the neck on a core, making it great for playing on the goal of those who prefer a more compact instrument, double Ocarina, this type has two chambers, each with its own set of finger holes allowing for wider range of notes and more complex harmonies. Triple ocarina, The triple Ocarina has three chambers and it's typically used by professional players. It is the most complex of all our coroners. That's all for this lesson, I'll share five tips for buying an Ocarina online in the next lesson. 5. Tips on Buying Ocarinas Online: One, look for reputable seller and avoid overpriced or coroners when purchasing an Ocarina final shot with plenty of reviews and purchases, expensive operators may not be woven as the more you spend, the only slight increase in sound quality you receive as a beginner, opt for an affordable options starting from ten onwards. Tip to consider the material of the Ocarina. Entrepreneurs can be made of clay, ceramic, plastic. I prefer the clay and ceramic or coroners because they have a warmer and richer sound, but be careful as they are fragile. It can break if dropped. If you're clumsy and callous person like myself, a plastic or coroner may be the better option. Tip three, the tuning. Most entrepreneurs are in the key of C, but some may be different keys like G or F major. The key is important as it affects the music that can be played. For beginners, I recommend an Ocarina in a key of C. Unless you have a specific piece you want to play in a different key tip for choose the right shape and size of the Ocarina. Or coroners come in various shapes and sizes. Avoid soprano entrepreneurs, as they may be small and high-pitched. Instead, choose a normal size ocarina that is suitable for teenagers and adults. Tip five, ignore fancy titles in browsing online shops, you may come across or coroners labeled as constant greed or professional. These are simply marketing tactics. Most entrepreneurs ranging from $10 to $30 are suitable for beginners. That's all for the tips on buying an Ocarina online. I hope you find a perfect one before continuing with the costs. In the next video, I'll cover a proper breathing technique, which is the number one most important aspect of playing any wind instrument. I'll see you in the next lesson. 6. How To Properly Breathe When Playing Any Wind Instrument: Hey friends, welcome to the second section of the course, fundamental techniques. The first thing we need to learn is how to breathe properly. It sounds ridiculous. But this is the most important aspect of playing any wind instruments. For this video, we don't need the Ocarina. We need a comfortable chair. If you want to stand, that's better. Most people who don't play any wind instruments don't breathe properly. And we need to fix this before touching the instrument. It is the act of fully breathing in into your diaphragm or ensuring your shoulders don't pop up like this. Here's an example. I'm breathing in and breathing out. Your stomach and diaphragm area should be expanding and contracting. When you're full of it should look like you have a very big summer as if you just eat a buffet when you have no annual diaphragm and stock, your stomach should be contracted and very, very skinny. You want to struggle pushing on the last bits of a you have in struggled just a little bit when approaching your limit, breathing all the air, you can make sure that you don't overdo it. Expanding our capacity within our lungs and diaphragm will take time. The mistake most beginners make is they don't breathe enough. And if you don't breathe, you get dizzy. And we don't want that follow this exercise with me now. I'm going to breathe in as much as I can for 5 s, hold it for 3 s and breathe out. Make sure your shoulders don't pop up at all and don't dance. Breathe in, in 321. Breathe in. And revolve. You should try to believe everything. Get. This exercise forces you to breathe properly. When you're breathing the Ocarina, this needs to be unconscious and instinctual. It's similar to meditating, but the emphasis is on your breath the next time you're waiting for q, standing in line or just waiting at a traffic light, do this simple exercise, you build your capacity. We shall go a long way to not only help you in plane the Ocarina, but in life too. If you're able to do this, plane nodes on ocarina should be very easy. One caution to note. Don't breathe into your shoulders ideas. That's it for this lesson, and I'll see you in the next video. 7. The Secret To Producing The Nicest Sound On The Ocarina: In this lesson, I'll share the secret to producing the nicer sound on the Ocarina. Create a small opening with your lips and blowing using a fast, cool air stream. Similar to how you upload to cool down hot food. Practice. If a long steady air stream, make sure that ASPE is stable. So the pitch and tone are the Ocarina remains steady. Now, introduce to you the sustainable exercise, which is the secret to getting the most variable sound on any wind instrument. If I may go off topic for movement, people say that meditation is the most important thing anyone can do to improve their mental well-being and state of mind. Many ways to meditate. The easiest is to simply do nothing, also known as effortless meditation. The same is true for the sustained note exercise. To be honest, it's boring, unexciting, but it produces amazing results. This technique involves play each note on the Ocarina for fixed duration of time across all nodes. As a recap, before we pay each node, remember to do the breathing exercise I shared earlier. Breathe deeply into your diaphragm until it's full and make sure you don't breathe into your shoulders where shoulder pops out. We'll start off by playing anymore or coroner, for this demonstration, I'll use this fingering and covering a two holes at the back. Make sure you don't cover any of the mini holds. Here's a good demonstration. Here's a bad demonstration. Also introduced to you the two technique. Imagine yourself saying to every time you play a note on Ocarina, this is a node with the two technique. This is a note without the two technique. Notice that if you don't use the two technique, it doesn't sound nice. Remember, for most nodes we play on a greener. We must always use the two technique. Think of every note play like an athlete running a 100-meter race, it needs a good start. The two techniques helps us have a clean and clear song. Paste your airflow evenly over the next 5 s. Remember to start with the two technique, like a flowing tap. You don't want to blast all the a out in the first 3 s, you have too little. In the last 2 s. You want an even and sustain over 5 s. The following is a bad example. Similar to mitigating, your mind should only focus on the sounds of the Ocarina and nothing else. Well, a is flowing out of your body. Feel the sensation of your body reacting to this action, and keep a focus on a song you're producing. It should be a clear, pure song and should not shiver. Let me demonstrate it one more time. The longer you can play each note, the better overtime capacity will definitely increase the patients and give it time. That's a forest video, has patients with this exercise, both meditation and sustain exercise has made me calm and relaxed. I hope it can help you do the same. In the next lesson. 8. Ocarina Fingering Chart and Music Scales: In this lesson, I'll teach you how to use this ocarina fingering chart. After this lesson, you'll be one step closer to play almost any Ocarina to download the fingering chart I've attached as a PDF and print it out because this course is for beginners, I won't go too deep into teaching you music theory is stay or tissue or shortcuts to bypass all of that in music, that music alphabets which are a, b, c, d, e, f, g, and back to a. I've highlighted the most important notes for you to learn in this fingering chart will now play them in chronological order for the occasional fingerings as shown in the fingering chart, exactly. Black holes simply mean you cover them and white host means you leave them open. I'll first start with a node C. Remember to use the two technique at the start of every node. This node is C. Be sure to cover the two holes at the back of the ocarina. The next node D, the next node E. Remember what I said earlier about alternating your fingers to provide support to the ocarina, The key moments, or when you play the note D to E, D to E. D to E. Make sure when you play the note E, do not do this and lift your right hand pinky. The moment you lift your right ring finger, be sure to put down your right pinky to support the base of the Ocarina like this. Think of it like a seesaw. The action of it needs to be automatic, instinctual. The next note is F. The next note is G. The next note is a. Start lifting off your left hand pinky, by your left ring finger to play. Now for the next node, B, makes sure that left index finger is up for the next node. The next node, Heidi, when you play this note, make sure your left thumb shifts the position is suppose or greener from the bottom to prepare to play for higher notes. Pay attention to my right hand, where I have two fingers here supporting a base of the Ocarina. Lastnode, high F. What I've just played is called a musical scale, which means musical alphabet is going from one consecutive notes to another. Wanting to take them off is to remember not to move your fingers too far away from the Ocarina like this. This will lead to an unstable or cranial base. You want to make sure that your fingers are close to the Ocarina so they can support or greener and not drop it. For beginners, ignore the notes that I didn't highlight in the fingering charts. They are used for more intermediate players, but no worries are still teach you how to use them when teaching you a song later in the third section of this course, there are two things you need to practice for this video lesson. First, memorize the Ocarina fingering of the keynotes I've highlighted in the Ocarina chart. C, D E, F, G, a, B, C, D, E, and F. You need to remember all of the fingerings here to test yourself randomly choose any note and change your finger into debt, all the Ocarina, let's say E. It'll be this. Let's say g, Let's say f. This, let's say high C. I'll remember, it's this one day my hand is the memorize the music alphabets in chronological order. C, D, E, F, G, a, B, C, D, E, and F verbally say to herself, after playing every node, C, D E, C, D E C D E F G a, F G, a, F G a, B, C, Heidi be IC, Heidi, be high. See Heidi. Hi, E and F. E and F. The second thing to practice is scales. Play the notes in chronological order. Here's a slow demonstration to practice. He has a fast demonstration you should eventually reach after practicing for a while. Be patient and take your time to practice this just 5 min a day for a week and you'll see tremendous progress. If you have mastered these two packages, you can pretty much play almost any Ocarina deals moving forward. One last thing I'll mention is to add the sustainable exercise to the scale your play here. Challenge yourself to play each note for 10 s and play it for every single note on the adrenal or demonstrate this at full length in the next video, and I'll see you in the next lesson. 9. Sustained Note Exercise Challenge and Demonstration: In this video, I'll demonstrate the sustains not exercise. Your skills are not play each note of the scale for about 10 s each. It doesn't have to be exact. Just count to ten. In your mind, if it's your first time doing this fight against is good enough. Progressively get longer if possible, and try our best and have the proper breathing technique makes sure the patient is stable and not wobbly, cut off keenly wants you don't have any air. Be sure to remember their breathing lesson, thought earlier and breathe into your diaphragm. Made sure our showed us don't pop up and dance. I'll now do a food demonstration. This sustainable exercise is still very difficult for me, but the secret is to practice it as often as they can. I guarantee if you use this, you see improvements in your playing. 10. Ocarina Piece 1: Mary Had A Little Lamb: In this video, I'll be teaching you a simple tune. Mary Had a Little Lamb. Download the music sheet as attached in a course. You can see that I've listed down the music Latin notes here, E, D, C, D, E. I've also listed down the fingering on ocurring itself just for guidance, as mentioned in the previous video, you should try your best to memorize what are the ocurring of fingerings of C, D E, F, G, a, B, C, D, E, and F. I know that is a lot. But you must be familiar with that's to learn occurring or thesis fast. The most important thing when it comes to learning Ocarina is just pattern recognition or OCR enough English hot. I've shown you the sheet music for Mary Had a Little Lamb matched or queen of fingerings to each node and then play accordingly from left to right and all three-second rule to complete a piece, remember to use the two technique. Now, demonstrate it. The difficulty of learning this piece we're coming from you being unsure what the fingering is for each node, E, D, C, As mentioned earlier, also remember to use your right pinky as a support are occurring now and playing between notes D and E, D, E, D, E, D E, D E. Do not do this, as mentioned in the previous videos, once you are familiar or which you should be able to play this piece with. No problem. And I'll see you in the next lesson. 11. Ocarina Piece 2: Arirang (Korean Folk Tune): Hey friends. In this video, I'll teach you how to play Arirang, which is the most famous for deal in Korea. Notice in the score here, there are some lines around these are called slurs. What this means is you have to use the true technique when you see a start of the slurp. I've also colored it in light yellow for your reference. Offers, demonstrate the piece. Singing it. 2 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2 2, 2 2, 2, 2, 2, 2 tu tu tu, tu, tu tu, tu tu, tu tu, tu, tu, tu. Next, you need to learn the notes. I've listed them down as letters to help you. And I've also listed down the Ocarina finger patterns for every single node. Simply refer to them for each node one-by-one, to play this for you before even playing the Ocarina, I'll recommend just saying the music alphabets and changing your fingering on the Ocarina to ensure you're familiar with where to put your fingers. Here's a quick demonstration. D E D E G a G a B a B G E D E D E G a G a BAG a D E G, a G, G. The speed at which I'm singing, it might be a little bit fast. You can slow down based on how familiar you are with the Ocarina fingering. Don't be afraid to just check and make sure you're covering a host properly. This is to make sure that you're fingering is correct. I'll now demonstrate the first part of the song on the Ocarina. One thing I can give is to make sure that transition between each note is key and not muddy. This is a bad example. This is a good example. To achieve this, make sure your fingers are lifted away from the hole. Also makes sure you don't leave your fingers too far away from the Ocarina, just in case you lose support and draw Ocarina If possible to play this first section in one entire breath. If you can't do that, be sure to practice the sustained note exercise as shared previously, so that you can train yourself to store more and your diaphragm signal a button. The transition between high D and B might be difficult, making sure to practice this separately on its own if you have difficulties alternating 22 fingerings like this. This is a bad example. For this lesson. I'll demonstrate the whole piece. 12. Ocarina Piece 3: Amazing Grace: In this lesson, we'll be learning the popular song, Amazing Grace. The first thing you'll notice about this sheet music is there I have not included the Ocarina fingering. I hope that by now you can practice and try your best to remember the OCR enough fingering for each node if you still have difficulty doing so. Put the fingering chart next to the music sheet and playing one note at a time from left to right, the gist of learning any piece is to match the Ocarina fingering to the music nodes. Given this is a beginners class and not a music theory costs. I've helped listed down all the nodes in the music sheets. But in the case, if you want to learn how to identify nodes, pattern recognize, and just referenced the Ocarina fingering sheet I provided earlier. It looks the same. Then that is the queen of fingering for the particular nodes. Whenever you see something, highlight that in yellow on the music sheet, it means that you shouldn't use a two techniques on the start of debts or demonstrate this. Now. This is what this video, I'll see you in the next lesson where we'll learn my Hunt who go on for the movie Titanic. 13. Ocarina Piece 4: My Heart Will Go On (Titanic Movie Theme Song): In this lesson, we'll be learning a popular song from the Titanic movie. My heart will go on similar to Amazing Grace, I've omitted the doctrine of fingering. We'll have left the music alphabets for every single node. The only thing I want to highlight here is that it's a special note we haven't learned yet called F-sharp. Let me demonstrate the first three boss. Pay attention to the node here, G, G, G, G, F sharp, G. The fingering of g Is this on Ocarina. The figuring of action is This is the additional note you need to learn or demonstrate this piece. Be sure to always use the two technique on the stock of some notes. I have not included West specifically to use a tooth. And in here, as long as you feel the transition between those script, feel free to omit using the two technique. This is where you can start bending the rules and use the two technique when appropriate. It apart, like to highlight is from bar 18 to 19. The transition between D and Heidi might be difficult for beginners. I select in practice this separately by alternating between D and Heidi. Make sure the transition between the nodes are clear. Make sure the support of the oxidized state bar as well. We have come to the end of the course. I'll share some concluding thoughts on what you can do in your next chapter of learning the Ocarina. And I'll see you in the next lesson. 14. Concluding Thoughts: Hey friends, welcome to the end of the course. In this lesson, I'll share tips to help you learn faster and be more motivated in your journey in learning the Ocarina Tim one. Learn the pieces. You wants to learn. The instrument is just a medium, but it can play all types of music. Choose pop songs or any of your Freeman music to learn the Ocarina on, we have to offer enough fingering chart you should be able to match to occur enough agree to any song that you want. Simply half a quick Google search of the piece you want to learn, an attempt to try it, tip to practice technical exercises. There are two key exercises I've shared in this course. We shall exponentially improve your skills. It is playing a sustainable exercise and practicing scales for all nodes of the Ocarina. If you can master these two exercises, I can pretty much guarantee you'll be a better player. They are more intermediate to advanced techniques like vibrato and double it or any technique that lets you pay, not super fast. So I may cover them in future courses if it's helpful to anyone out there. That's it for this entire beginners course on a transverse Ocarina. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did teaching this as the final project for this course. Record yourself playing the single tiny exercise and sustained mental exercise to see how long you can pay them for. Feel free to upload your performance of Arirang. Amazing Grace, all my heart will go on frog, Titanic movie. Post a link to your video in the comments section and I'll reply to them as soon as I can. Send me an e-mail for any additional questions and comments or feedback that you have. Thanks so much for attending this course, and I'll see you in the next one.
