1. Introduction: Hi everyone. My name is Robin. I'm 28 years old and I was living in Switzerland. I have studied business administration in Switzerland as well. And because I was looking for a challenge, during my studies at university, I had learned basic Chinese. So H has k2 and Russian A1. That's quite the same level. And each within 30 days, more or less. And so there are a few learnings or shortcuts and so-called language hex from this time that I would like to share with you. And I hope that you can gain something from it. You will learn the most in this class if you put the content directly into practice and please experiment on your own, That's very important. Because I can say that from my own experience, whenever I have actively taking care of a matter, main muscles responsible for my success. The results have always filled me with choice and they were quite good. So I recommend you through the class if you are actively learning a new language or one, just to start with it, right now, you can watch the lesson at your own pace and please take as long as you need. I mean, that's awesome of Skillshare write. In this class, I will show you how I have used Anki and I talked to learn a new language in a very efficient way. So let me give you a rough structure of the whole class here. At the beginning, we'll look at how polyglots are learning a new language and how we can use the very same principles. For us. We talk about general goal setting and our so-called y, right? And discover polyglots, favorite tools and on can I talkie the very same tool, MS, we will use as well. In line those technologies or tools are so good for learning language of debt. We will take a closer look at each of the two tools. So we know how they work. Perfect, cool to have you on board and let's start with it by.
2. The System Inspired By Polyglots: Hi there. In this lesson, I want to show you how polyglots learn language and how I came to this system. At first I thought to myself, Hey, go and see if there are any professional language learners, right? And in heat, there are, there are so-called polyglots, some of whom speak more than ten languages fluently, and even with an accent. So those people know how to learn a language very quickly and quite sustainable. I mean, they can speak it quiet, good. I didn't spend countless hours reading up on polyglots who speak a variety of languages and their learning techniques. I already knew the famous author, thin fairies and read his blocks. His blog articles about learning languages. Also very helpful is anything by Ben Lewis. He is known throughout the learn language learning community as the Irish polyglot. And this famous for his many, many online videos. That document is language learning adventures around the globe. That's very interesting and I only, I can only recommend you to the Typhon on his content. It's very cool. Another great source of knowledge is Steve Kaufman, who is also called lingual and speaks over 20 languages. I mean, wow, 20 languages. Being able to speak so many languages quite fluently. Well, the astonishing. So you don't have to reinvent the wheel, right? These people seem to have figured out how to learn language was quite systematically. Why not just do the same? So I did just that. The first key message was that you need some kind of input before you create your first output. Meaning the end. You need to have something to talk with or with what content we wanted to have a conversation, right? So we need to learn the fundamentals of every language, the vocabulary, diverts, menu, then know the first words, like, let's say a restaurant meal and to order something, you can then start forming your very first and very basic sentences out of it. Like and like the order and this and that. Or I'd like to order pizza. So very basic stuff, right? When you know your first basic sentences, you can then arrange them in a meaningful way. So you agreed, for instance, a person in front of a restaurant or order something in a restaurant. So wallah, you have your very first basic conversation. Sure, it's all still super artificial end a cure. But you can already conducted dialogue in a protected setting. I mean, that's the whole goal, right? From getting from only words to our dialogue. Even if it's super artificial, we do not care at this stage. As you can see, the principle is very easy. Going from Mertz, two sentences, and then to a discussion. The majority of polyglots mentioned spaced repetition as the most effective methodology or a way to get a receive such an input in the most effective way. Anki is the best spaced repetition tool for that. So that's a tool for the spaced repetition with no other tool you can learn so quickly and in such a systemized way as with Anki. After some initial difficulty, I started learning with Anki and I can confirm it. It's awesome. It's quite difficult to get started or how to save it as a learning curve. But anyone who learns with Anki doesn't want to change again. It's before the best for memorizing stuff like vocabulary and even whole sentences. With Anki, we now get input the most effective way in the form of learning language basics and implement the first key message we got from the polyglots in the beginning, right? So we have to get input in the form of words, sentences, et cetera, and on Keystone, most effective way to do that. The second message is steady need to completely surround yourself with new language and use it actively. Use different touch points and senses. I mean, speak, write a read, listen anyway, in a new language. So be creative. For myself, for instance, I then read comics or books in many real and followed other polyglots on YouTube who are learning Mandarin and watched her progress. Or less than two thousands of podcasts about Chinese pronunciation. I mean, I was super motivated and can still remember how much fun ahead at this time. My walls were full of Chinese words like the names of the days or a month or trust the number from one to 20. I made very good progress. Back then. I could read the Chinese books though, added quite a basic level, but fault of having a real world conversation may be quite uncomfortable. I mean, being able to read passively or having a real conversation. That's a big difference. I mean, let's imagine you're sitting in front of your desk. And imagine you are in a Chinese restaurant and mainland and wants to order something. That's a little bit of a difference is net. And far too many people spend far too much time behind the textbooks and simply speak too little. This is by far the most important point. Really. Speak as early as possible. That's so important. Now, It's time to put all those, are all the accumulated knowledge into practice and apply it. I'll polyglots agreed that it's best to live in a country where the language is spoken daily, the immersion is simply much greater. But since I still had face-to-face classes at the university, I had to stay in Switzerland. Besides that, I was all it was also financial aspect. I mean, I was a student at this time and had simply no money. And other people like you may have different or the same problems. And also I have to stay at home. I don't know, but I couldn't go to China. So China had come to me. My main goal was to talk to native Chinese people as much as possible. And small disclaimer, I do not have any colleague or friend or whatsoever who is our native Chinese person. So I had to find another way. So I looked for ways to surround myself with a native person as quickly and as cheaply as possible. That's how I found I talky of doing my own research. It's one of the best language learning platform worldwide that bring students and teachers together very easily and quite cost effectively. I mean, it's quite cheap. Wished I talkie, we can take our learned words from Anki into practice and implements the second key message. So let's sum it up. The goal is to first build this broad foundation of words and sentences with honky, right? Then we have, i, i talkie. We tried to move from an artificial and safe environment to a more natural and open one by speaking directly and easily with native speakers. That's the goal here. Those two key messages, input and immersion. Input in the form of Anki. And immersion with talking to Chinese people or whatever language you are using, right? And just talking because I have edited with Chinese. But whatsoever, in any language you are learning, with time, you will remember the most common combinations of sentences and will not only be able to repeat isolated sentences, but also to combine them skillfully. Have simple conversations. And I have not said anything about grammar right now, right? I mean, grammar plays a subordinate role in this system at the beginning, since you do not focus on perfection, That's very important, that the focus is on the two key messages, input and immersion. Or input and talking grammar should help us to achieve those two key messages. It isn't the sole purpose, it's just assisting us. That's important. But of course, we need a certain grammar to be able to use the words at all, right? We have to build a meaningful sentence. And usually you do it a little bit more, or usually you do a little bit more grammar in the beginning. And then Adrian, less and less. So with grammar, it's as much as necessary and as little as possible. Perfect. That's it for a system. And in the next lesson, we will look at how you can best adopt this system. We have just looked at two very specific needs. Thanks a lot.
3. Adapt The System To You: Hi there. So there is no one size fits all solution, right? Each person has different conditions, different prerequisites. So on key or I talk, you may not need to be used to the same extent. Maybe for one person. The focus is on Anki, for the other person. More on ice hockey. Depending on the prerequisites and call the goal set one has. So we need to understand, is to make the best use of Anki and I talkie. For instance, if you have an exam at the university, you should know what the exam looks like, right? What are the question types? Closed, open. Very teachers focus, very important. Oral, written, grammatical emphasis, content, so on, so on. We fight diversity. It's often a measure of very standardized tests, which includes grammar, speaking, writing, and listing, right? However, if you only want to improve your language skills for traveling or holidays, you don't need to learn the same things as at university, right? For traveling. It may be enough to work on your pronunciation. And you may not care about grammar and writing at all. The first tool, Anki, is very good for memorizing words while I talk is excellent for listening and speaking. So if you're, if you already have a good vocabulary in this or in this, or in your target language. The focus will be more on ice hockey. If all the andra Author hand side, you don't have much of a vocabulary yet or you want to expand your existing vocabulary, it's best to work with the normal and combination of K9 talk you. So we would just use both tools to the same extent. Nothing special about it, right? So take a moment and think about what exactly you want or need to learn in very focus will be, is it more on Anki? Because you would need to have some kind of fun fundamental or basics. Or is it more an italic? Because you have to learn stuff about pronunciation or just the general speaking ability, right? So think about it, and that's very important. So in the next lesson, we will look at Spaced Repetition. Do you remember that's the first key message of the polyglots built up your input as efficiently as possible with spaced repetition. But why is spaced repetition so good? Let's look at this in the next lesson.
4. Why Nothing Beats Spaced Repetition: Hi there. In this lesson, we talked about why nothing beats spaced repetition. Basically, every student, knowledge worker, or more generally speaking, are spoken. Everybody who wants to learn something new and benefit from using a system for memorizing things much easier. And spaced repetition is one of the best solutions for that. As previously mentioned, Spaced repetition is a system which makes memorizing things quite easy. It's a lot more efficient than traditional study methods. And you can either Greek greatly decrease your time spent studying or greatly increase the amount of, you are dumb and that you learn, right? So you can use it to learn a language like we're doing right now. Or you can study for medical and law exams, mastering long poems and much, much more. I have used this kind of system for myself, for various aspects of my life like learning languages or even terms for my sailing exam. But what exactly is spaced repetition? Space repetition is an evidence based learning technique that is usually performed with flashcards. It has been used for several decades, decades, and has been proven to increase the speed of learning. But how does it work? So, newly introduced and more difficult flashcards are showing more frequently, while older and less difficult flashcards are shown less frequently, frequently. So you learn the flashcards at different times depending on its difficulty. For example, difficult word comes more often and at shorter intervals. Make sense, right? With Anki, It's quite the same. Basically, when you see a flashcard in Anki, you actively recall it. Test yourself on what it is, and then you see the answer. And then you can rate whether you find it easy, medium, or hard. Based on whether you click easy, medium or hard, it automatically figures out what this be. Spaced, repetition intervals should be. So if I found something easy, Hilton ask me again in three days. If I found it hard. Adult ask me again five minutes. So if you can do it if we can do Anki everyday or at least regularity, every day or every few days. We can basically trust the algorithm, but we shouldn't throw anything into Anki or into a spaced repetition system. Anki is very good for a specific tangible effects like what capillary city names, anatomic dates, so on. So fact, It's not that great for understanding concepts like Western philosophy or theoretical physics. The way that I think of ANC is that donkeys or that Anki functions as a Second Brain. And you can upload data from Anki into your bread minutes. That good, it's very effective. You will see Perfect. So let's take a look closer look at Anki in the next lesson.
5. Brief Overview of Anki: Let's dive into Anki. We will only go into the basics that you need for this class. In this class, I focus on the combination of Anki with I talk in terms of learning a language. So I don't want to go too deep into Bobo both tools. This will be too much and this beyond the scope of the class. If you want to learn more about Anki at a later date, I have linked everything in the resources down below. Anki is a powerful and intelligent flashcards software, which was a spaced repetition software. So it's quite similar to Quizlet. But the technology behind is much more sophisticated. Simply put, you learn and retain things much faster. And Petra with Anki, as you heard in the previous lessons, Let's check the official website. So it's called apps dot Anki, web.net. So you can just Google the verb Anki and to obey the first and our result on top of the search results. Let's go to our apps, dot Anki, web, dotnet. Remember anything, remember anywhere, remember efficiently. That's exactly how it is. So anki is completely free and open source. That's quite cool. Besides the three versions for Mac, Windows and Linux, you do have to pay, though, a little bit of money for the iOS app, an Android, it's free. You could use something like Quizlet. That's true. But I have also used crystal in the past. I mean, it's pretty and that's the one thing about Anki. Anki is not very pretty. Sometimes it feels like It's not very intuitive. So there is a bit of a learning curve here. With Quizlet, on the other hand set, there isn't any learning curve. It's very easy, but that's very important. But Quizlet, quizlet is also a lot less powerful than Anki. Overall. You really can't customize it. It also means you can't customize, customize it. And if you're serious about using flashcards and you know how to operate a computer proficiently, then you will have no problem with Anki. Trust me. If you know how to, if you know how to run a computer and watch this series here or this class, this shouldn't be a problem at all. Therefore, you want to do this properly. You want to use Anki rather than Quizlet. Learn on key once and use it again and again. No one has ever told me that day regretted using Anki. But people keep saying that they regret getting to know Anki late, including myself. Okay, So let's dive into Anki. I have downloaded it from Anki web.net and installed it. I mean, it's pretty simple. Afterwards you will see the screen have 10 multiple elements. You have the deck, you have Browse, you have statistics and think. We will go into that later. What, what is it all about the different texts there? So OK, so-called deck is similar to a folder. There. You can find all the flashcards in it. You can sort manage whatever you want. So let's first create a deck. After we have created the deck, we now create a flashcard. Type in all your details of the flashcard and hear you. So you can either create a flash card or you can download a flashcard. And that's where Anki is. Power is, because there is such a huge community behind Anki and that's very valuable. So on Anki web.net slash, shared slash decks, you can now not a lot of tax shared by the huge community of Anki deck or more precise to study some flashcards and a new window opens. It's quite intuitive. Here we can browse all our existing flashcards. So it's like a database. Statistics is nice to look at, but it's not very important yet. Later on, It's quite motivationally. But I would definitely recommend you to create an Anki account so you can save all your data. That's important because you can also access all your flashcards from your mobile phone. But you will have a lot. So it's very important because you will have a lot of flashcards, right? And in the unlikely case of a broken PC or losing your laptop, you can just restore all the data. So explore Anki by yourself and check it out. Play around with it. Created deck, create flashcards. Explore shared texts on the internet or the web. I have just told you. Check it out. Search for relevant texts for you. So get inside the Anki, reverse them. So that's a brief insight or a brief overview of Anki. There is so much more to discover later. So special types of flashcards are tailored to your needs. Importing from spreadsheets. I mean, that's, that's huge and you can save so much time. With such things. There are dozens of settings and much, much more. So it's pretty cool. But do not get, do not get lost in the details that cells are important because Anki can be tricky and you can't get lost. First, familiarize yourself with the system. And then on K9 Talkie in special. Perfect. Now we have covered the first part of the system and how to build up and learn the words, right? We have discovered Anki, you know how to use it in a very basic manner. But that's all. Now. You have to study, study, study all the words and all the vocabulary, cities, and all the sentences. Let's discover the second part in which we talk about the importance of immersion, especially about speaking as early as possible. Thanks a lot. See you next time.
6. Why Speaking Is That Important: Hi there S in the beginning mentioned. The goal was to build a broad foundation of words and sentences with Anki. Now, with AI talkie, we tried to move from an artificial and safe environment. Like we had a donkey to a more real world like and open environment, right? Imaging sitting in front of your PC or desk in New York or London. But in a Chinese mainland restaurant, and you would like to order something spicy, that's a little bit different, isn't it? So, as I said, far too many people spend far too much time behind the textbooks and simply speak to a little. This is by far the most important point. That's why all polyglots, I agree that it is best to live in a country where this language is spoken daily and to expose yourself and interact with as much of your desired language as possible. You will learn much faster. But oftentimes that is not suitable option, right? And we have to find other ways to simulate this kind of immersion. So if he couldn't go to China or whatever contour target language is spoken, this country has to come to us. That's exactly what we are going to do with AI talky putting all the accumulated knowledge into practice. Now the question is, when is the best time to start? Is terror? Best time to start? Should you build an up? Should you build up an extensive, excessive vocabulary and start with, I talky after two or three months. I could talk about this topic for a long time. Short story. Yeah, as quickly as possible. As soon as you notice that you can build your first sentence or you start to feel comfortable with Anki or the language in general. Use I talky. After how many days or weeks you feed the Redmi depends heavily on your commitment. For example, at the time at university, I was studying for about 10 hours a day, so I was able to learn quite quickly. But this is the normal Right? If a person studies for ten minutes a day, for example, he would make less progress than me, right? So it's all about, and the idea was to deliver right now, if you work more, you can expect better results. So therefore, you would use, I talked a little bit earlier. That means I would use, I talked a little bit faster than that person because I could form the sentences are a little bit earlier, right? Just for the simple reason that I invested more time. So don't compare yourself if another person, because in my opinion, comparison makes you unhappy to your own thing and you will know when it's time. But the rule of thump is and remains to start talking as early as possible. It sounds much more motivating. I can still remember when I was able to speak the first sentences or when I was able to introduce myself in Chinese to those around me. Into a supermarket waiting to see TMS, lover of my friends. That was so cool. It was really cool. I also could order a meal in a Chinese restaurant in Valencia in Spain. And tells us very cool experience. And so that, that paid all the efforts of and sometimes it also helps to set yourself a certain deadline. I mean, if you have an exam, normally you have a deadline. And maybe you don't have any deadlines for reasons like you want to learn the language for traveling or for holidays. I don't know. But the deadline is something that they could help. Something like if then or in 30 days I want to start, I talk gave out ifs and pots. Or as soon as I know, 200 Earths in Anki, I will start with I talking something like that. I think that learning from the beginning can be unfamiliar, but very motivational, as I just described, with ordering food in a Chinese restaurant. And let's be honest, a lot of us give up on learning a language. And I think the only reason is motivation. Even for those who say that they don't have the time. In the end, that means that other things are either more important or you're more motivated to other things. When it's important, you always find time speaking with people, seeing the results, seeing small achievements. This I think is something very powerful and can really motivate you. So don't forget your motivation and start the font rewarding part early on to not Nicollet neglected and speak as early as possible. And that's true. So perfect. Thanks so much. And let's see you in the next lesson where we explore I talkie.
7. Brief Overview of italki: Hi there. Let's explore. I talky. I talking is the biggest global language learning community that connects students who want to learn language with a teacher who can teach his language. So there are over 5 million learners and over 1000 teachers. So you can learn pretty much any language there. There are hundreds of languages. The lessons are private only, so one-to-one lessons. There are so many teachers for every Beecher schedule and learning needs. So you will find that that works for you and can help you practice. Before we start, you can use a special discount and which you get $10 in. I talky credits for free after you buy your first lesson. I talked credit is just the internal currency. You have two exchanges, exchange those. But nothing too complicated. So we have those $10 usually get about two or three lessons on I talked for free. So just type go dot.com slash Skillshare and continue there. So don't forget to use this discount men registering. Okay, perfect. Click here on Get started. Now, you can create new account by using your email or your Facebook login. Keep in mind that this 10 percent dollar discount is only for new students. Now, we want to find a good teacher who can support us in practicing the language, right? So here you can search and filter for teachers in different ways. And I will cover topics like finding the best suitable teacher for you or other very useful tips in other classes. Because there are so many tips and tell you all the tips and tricks I have learned over the last three years and over 1000 lessons, Lincoln resources and below. However, the current basic level of detail is far enough for the purpose of this concept. So there is an important thing to understand. Talky splits sir teachers into two different teacher types. You have the community and you have the professional teacher. So if you just want to have general chit chat with somebody, so just practicing on your pronunciation for instance. So let's say in French or German and you are not too worried about any grammatical stuff or anything too formal. A community tutor or teacher will probably be the person for you. Now, professional teachers, on the other hand side, are actual certified and qualified teachers. So if you have learned languages before, then you probably know how you learn. And you will want a teacher who is more flexible, who is open to you teaching yourself. So being kind of a coach or a guide, something like this. So it's much more, it's, it's free with more free space, right? But if you don't have much experience and it's new for you learning a language. And you will want to have a teacher who is really systematic and methodical approach and we will hold your hand a little bit more. Now of course, the different soil common costs, but will come that later on. We will cover that later. But that's just an important thing to note from the start. Community teacher, professional teacher, right? Once you have a teacher that you have a good impression of, then look at the teachers availability. It shows you the availability of the teacher as well as yours, so that you don't double book yourself if another teacher, something like this. Those times are always in your local time zone. So you don't have to calculate the time. So it's very helpful. Once everything is confirmed, you will get a message and you will also choose your mood, mode of communication. So for instance, I chose to do it by Skype. But you can also do it by FaceTime, Google Meet or Zoom or whatever tool you are using, right? You can do whatever you do really. And there aren't any restrictions some people had problems with. I talk is classroom. And so that's their solution. I mean, it's cool. You can try it. And if it doesn't work, then just switch to another client, like Skype or something like this. So I really recommend trying not just one teacher, but many more, something like 45 or even seven. But you get the ID. Try different teachers. You might like a teacher and you might think, hey, they're cool. But if you don't have a lot of experience with a lot of different features, then you know, you might not realize that, but maybe it's a cool person, but this is actually not the approach you would need. That's very important Really. That's one major learning I had. You really have to go through a bunch of different classes to already see for yourself all these different teaching styles and approaches. If you're planning on sticking with the teacher for several weeks or even months, then you want to make sure that your teacher is somebody who will enjoy having class with. If you don't like them, then you know, we are going to get burned out on seeing them. Or you're going not want to jump on the sky with them because, you know, it's just so much work to talk to them. So in the long term, it's much better to try different teachers than just one teacher. Really. Try different teachers to even get three trials. F of 3 if you are new user. So you said, perfect. Let's assume you have booked your first lesson and want to know what the lessons are like. So actually an ice hockey lessons, Barry, completely depending on what you want and what you and your Keyczar agree on. So there is not at a specific set of having a lesson or any requirements, you're completely on your own. And if your teacher for, for sure. So essentially you can learn whatever you want with your teacher by her side. You can now practice real conversation situations. So that's the whole goal of using AI talky, Right? We used Anki to build up the foundation with the words, have those super artificial discussions. And now we can practice with ice hockey teachers. That's the whole goal of this. So explore, I talky on your own. Look at different people or teachers profile, compare them, have several lessons. Get your experience that's important and try different lessons. Thanks a lot and see you in the next lesson.
