About This Class
This is the first class in my Marker Basics series — and in it, we’ll focus on one of the most essential skills for alcohol marker art: blending and gradients. In this easy and completely beginner-friendly class, we’ll explore how to work with alcohol markers and create a bright, realistic illustration of a shiny blue balloon.
You’ll learn how to sketch the balloon step by step, create smooth gradients using wet-on-wet blending techniques, and understand how to place highlights, shadows, and reflected light to give your balloon a three-dimensional look. We’ll also practice a simple one-color gradient, a two-color gradient, and a multiple-color gradient exercise to help you master smooth transitions before starting the main project.
This class is broken down into clear, easy-to-follow lessons — from gathering materials and sketching to coloring and blending — making it perfect for anyone new to markers or looking to improve their blending skills.
Whether you’re just starting your marker journey or want to add more fun, playful illustrations to your sketchbook, this class will help you gain confidence and create smooth, vibrant marker art.
Note: I’ll be using Bristol paper, but you can absolutely use any marker-friendly paper you prefer.

Meet Your Teacher
Hello everyone! My name is Anna Ostapenko, and I'm a Ukrainian artist traveling the world. My adventures and the places I visit inspire my art--I've explored over 40 countries so far!
Through my watercolors, I show the beauty of nature--tender flowers, amazing, breathtaking landscapes, and peaceful seascapes. Each painting is a way to share the places that inspire me and the feelings they leave behind.
I also enjoy working with markers, especially when creating bright, playful illustrations like candies and desserts--it's a fun way to explore color and texture in a completely different style.
Here on Skillshare, I'm excited to share everything I've learned along the way--from watercolor techniques and color mixing to marker basics, composition, and finding your own ... See full profile
Hands-on Class Project
In this class, we’ll start by practicing different gradient techniques — one-color, two-color, and multiple-color gradients — to get confident with smooth blending. Then, we’ll move on to our main project: drawing a shiny blue balloon step-by-step.
We’ll begin with a simple pencil sketch, then apply the blending skills from our exercises to create a vibrant, three-dimensional balloon using alcohol markers.
You’ll practice:
-
Creating smooth one-color gradients
-
Blending two colors seamlessly
-
Mixing multiple colors for soft, beautiful transitions
-
Wrapping up all the skills into an easy, quick, realistic balloon sketch
You can follow along exactly or make it your own — experiment with different balloon shapes, colors, or even playful patterns! For the gradient exercises, try as many different color combinations as you like. I’d love to see not only your finished balloon but also your gradient practice sheets, so be sure to upload them to the Projects & Resources section.
Once you’re done, share your work in the gallery — I can’t wait to see your colorful, floating creations and give you personal feedback! 🎈✨
You’ll find everything you need in the Attachments section, including:
-
A full marker color palette I used
-
A printable sketch outline (optional for beginners)
-
A ZIP folder with reference photos of different balloons for inspiration
Materials you’ll need:
-
Marker-friendly paper (I use Bristol paper, but any paper for alcohol markers will work)
-
Alcohol markers (Copic or any brand you like)
-
A pencil
-
A kneaded eraser and/or regular eraser
-
Colorless blender marker
