Handmade Birthday Card With Easy and Simple Craftwork

1. Welcome to the Class: When we talk about handmade things, I personally love to create handmade birthday cards whenever I'm gifting. Using some basic art supplies and some simple craftwork, you can create a birthday card very easily. Hey, everybody, you are most welcome to my new class, myself RuthwikPatel. I'm a self taught independent artist and an interior designer by profession. I personally love to explore different art forms and styles and not stick to one particular thing. So if you're joining me, you'll find a variety of classes that I create. In this class, we are going to create a beautiful birthday card using easy and simple craftwork. For the entire class, you'll need some basic art supplies that you'll find very easily in any nearby local art store. Or you can go for any other good alternative as well. We're going to start by understanding the class project and all the elements that we are going to use to create the particular birthday card. You're going to understand all the art supplies that you will need for the entire class. No need to worry at all. You'll need some basic art supplies, and in case you're missing out on any particular art supply, you'll find it very easily in any nearby local art store. The class focuses on some basic craft work, so we are going to start by creating the base of the card first. Once we are done creating a beautiful square base, we are going to add some aesthetics to the base by adding this beautiful creative paper. Once we are done with the base, we are going to add some text to the entire card, which says happy birthday and a message. We're going to create a little vase. We are going to add a little book and some dried flowers to enhance the aesthetics of the entire card. It's not compulsory for you to create the card in the exact same way, so you're free to explore and experiment. By the end of the class, you'll have a beautiful handmade birthday card that you can use for gifting. No need to worry about the output, enjoy the process of creating. It's a short class that will not take a lot of your time, and it will elevate your craft skills. So without any delay, grab your art supplies and join me on this creative journey. 2. Details About the Class Project: Hey, everybody. Now let us talk about the class project that we are going to create. I'll be giving you the details about the class project and the elements that we are going to create one by one. Observe them carefully so that you get an exact idea about the class project. So here is our birthday card that I have placed in an aesthetic manner. So let me take you a little bit closer so that you can observe all the elements carefully. The first element is the base of the card that I have created using two basic colors. One is white, another one is maroon. Now, if you observe, there is this beautiful cut out of paper that I have used, which is generally used in pastries, you'll find it very easily in any nearby local art store. You can go for any other good alternative, as well. And in case you do not want to use it, it is absolutely fine. Then we have this beautiful text of happy birthday and a message that I have added in the bottom portion. There's this little color palette that I have added using some colored sketch pens. Now on the right hand side, if you observe, there's this beautiful vase that I have created using some paper. Then we have this little white bow that I'll show you how to create, and we're going to place it on the vase. Then inside the vase, we are going to place these beautiful red flowers which are dried, and you'll find them very easily in any nearby local art store. Combining all these little elements together, we are going to form this beautiful birthday card that you can use for gifting. No need to worry about the process at all. Just enjoy the process of creating. Using some easy craft work, we are going to complete the entire card. I'm very excited to share the entire process of creating the entire card with all of you. I hope that you got an exact idea about the entire birthday card that we are going to create. Now let us move towards the next part. 3. Art Supplies: Hey, everybody. Now let us talk about all the art supplies that you will need for the entire class. No need to worry at all. In case you are missing out on any particular art supply, you'll find it very easily in any nearby local art store, or you can go for any other good alternative as well. Now, let me give you the details about the art supplies one by one. So now as you can observe, I have placed all my art supplies in a systematic manner. Let us talk about them one by one. But before that, as you all know that we are going to create this particular birthday card, and all the art supplies that I'm going to show you are going to be used to create this entire card. So now let us place it aside and let us talk about the first art supply. So to create the base of the entire card, we will need a simple ruler in which there are going to be dimensions mentioned in centimeters. It's a 15 centimeter ruler, which will help us to create the card base and take some measurements. Then the next art supply is the papers that we are going to use. You can observe three basic colors in the papers. The first one is white. Then we have brown paper, and the last one is maroon. So let me give you the details about the white and brown paper so that you can find them very easily. And the maroon paper is a loose sheet that I got from an art store. You'll find any other good alternative to this particular color. Now the white paper is A five size sheet from Canson, and it is 300 GSM. So these are the watercolor papers that we basically use for watercolor painting. Then for the brown paper, I'm using papers from scholar. These are craft paper, 170 GSM, A five size sheet. Now, apart from these two papers, we will use a maroon color paper to create the card base. In case you do not want to use a maroon color paper, you can use any other good alternative as well. So these are the three basic papers that we are going to use. Now the next art supply is a simple glue that we are going to use to stick the paper wherever required. It's a liquid glue, so you can use any good alternative as well. Then the next art supply is a simple scissor that we are going to use to cut the paper wherever required. There are going to be little message tags that we are going to cut using a scissor as well. Then I have a simple black marker from art line. The tip of the marker is 0.8, and it is water resistant. So we're going to write the text using this particular black marker, and you can observe the tip of the marker as well. It is absolutely fine. You can use any other good black marker to write the text message. Then I'm having these beautiful colored sketch pens and no need to worry about the specific color. You can use any good alternative. You can observe there are these beautiful shades of blue, green, and a simple brown color. So we're going to use it to add a nice small color palette in our message tag. Then next up, I have a simple pencil that everyone must be having. You're going to use this to take some basic measurements on the paper so that we can cut them in a perfect manner. Then next up, I have a simple eraser, which we can use to erase the pencil line in case we make any mistake. Then comes a very important art supply that you'll find very easily in any nearby local art store. So it's a simple cutout of a paper in this designed manner, in a circular form, and you'll find it very easily in any nearby local art store. And in case you do not find it very easily, it is absolutely fine if you do not use it in the background. You can still take up the class project. So we are going to cut this paper and use it in an aesthetic manner. Then comes another art supply, which is a double sided tape. You can observe the thickness of this tape. It is basically having stickiness on both the sides, and we are going to use it to add a little bit of depth and three effect while we create the message tags. Then next up, I have these beautiful red dried flowers. You can observe how beautiful the flowers look. So we are going to use these flowers in the vase that we are going to create, and you'll find dried flowers very easily in any nearby local art store. These little flowers basically enhances the entire card, and it increases the aesthetics as well. Then the next art supply is a simple white thread that we are going to use to create this little white bow on the vase. It is a very simple and easy technique to create a bow. I hope that you got an exact idea about the art supplies that we are going to use. Now let us move towards the next part. 4. Creating the Card Base: Hey, everybody. So now let us start with the first step, which is creating the card base. So the card base is going to be a simple square. You're going to use two basic papers to create the card base. Here I have maroon, brown and white. Brown paper, we are going to keep it aside and we're going to use it later. The base, we are going to create using white and maroon. So here I have my white color paper placed on the desk surface. I'll be using a simple ruler and pencil to take the measurements. You can observe we have dimensions and centimeters in this plastic ruler. I'll place zero centimeter at the edge of the paper, and I'll put one simple dot at 12 centimeters. I'll put my scale a little bit lower and take another point. Put 0 centimeters on the edge of the paper and put one dot at 12 centimeters. Now we have two basic points, and we can take a nice straight line, put your ruler and match the points together and simply take one line using your pencil. Now, this time, we have a beautiful width of 12 centimeters. Similarly, we'll add another line. Now I'll put 0 centimeters on the second edge of the paper and put one dot at 12 centimeters. Now again, I'll draw another line, rotate the paper. And simply create a line using your pencil. So I hope that you got an exact idea of how to create a perfect square. In case you know another method of creating a perfect square, you can use that as well. Now we have the lines and we have to remove the square cut out. I'll use a simple pair of scissors and just follow the pencil line. No need to hurry at all, take your time and be very much careful whenever you're using a scissor. You can observe I have removed one side. Similarly, I'll cut the second line as well and remove the extra part. So now you can observe that we got a beautiful square piece, which is the base of the card, and we have this remaining portion of the paper. Always save paper. It is going to be used later. So I'll keep it aside. So now you can observe that we have got a beautiful 12 centimeters by 12 centimeters base. Similarly, we are going to create another square paper using maroon color. So you can observe I'm having a rectangular sheet of maroon color paper as well. Now, this time we are going to take 1 centimeter less so that we get a beautiful white border when we place the maroon color paper over white paper. You might not be able to see very clearly, but let me just guide you. I'll put 0 centimeters at one edge of the paper and put a simple dot at 11 centimeters. You can observe the dot. It's in gray color. Similarly, we'll take one more dot so that we can draw a nice straight line. I'll put my scale a little bit lower and take another point at 11 centimeters. Now we have got two dots. I'll just simply draw a straight line using a pencil. So we have got a nice width of 11 centimeters. Similarly, we'll take one more line in horizontal manner. You can put your scale again, put your 0 centimeters at one edge of the paper, and on the line this time, take 11 centimeters. Now, we'll create another line and complete the entire square. Now, in case you know another easy method of creating a square, having 11 centimeters by 11 centimeters, you can use that as well. Now, once we are done with the lining, we are going to use a simple pair of scissors and follow the pencil line. Slowly cut and no need to hurry at all. You can simply follow the pencil line till the edge. Now, similarly, I'll just remove the extra part. We have one more pencil line. You just have to follow that. Use your scissor and remove the remaining portion as well. Now, this time we have the 11 centimeters by 11 centimeters. So if we place it on the white square base that we have created, it will have a little bit of space and you'll be able to see a nice white bottom. So I'm going to place this smaller square on this bigger square. Let me do this without glue and show you how it is going to look. You can observe once you place the maroon paper on white paper, there is going to be a little bit of white space, which is going to create a nice white border. Now to place the maroon paper, we are going to use some liquid glue and we're going to apply it on the back side. You can use any side. It is absolutely fine since the color is same on both these sides. I'll use this liquid glue and we're going to apply it nicely on the entire paper surface. Now, one thing that you can keep in mind whenever you're using a liquid glue is that make sure that you apply the glue well on the entire paper surface so that it spreads in a nice way and it gets stuck with the paper base. Right now, you can observe the glue in this line manner. We are going to spread it using a simple finger. You can observe that I have applied enough glue on the paper surface. I'll just take the paper in my hand and you can observe the way I use my finger to spread the glue. It is very important for you to apply the glue on the paper edges so that it will not get folded once we apply it on the white base. Again, I'll be telling you the same thing. No need to hurry at all. Try to do it very slowly in a slow and steady manner. You can observe that I have spreaded the entire glue on the paper surface. Now, simply, we are going to just flip it over and place it on the white paper. Now, this time, you have to be very much careful because we want to leave some white space on all the four sides. So try to keep the paper in a careful manner. Try to keep some white space, apply it using both your hands so that you can apply it in a careful manner. Now you can observe that we have placed the paper, apply some pressure using your fingers. And there is this beautiful white edge which is visible, and we have this maroon paper on the top surface. In case you find that your edge is looking a little bit slant, it is absolutely fine. We can cover that by cutting it using our scissors. Now, once we are done with the entire paper base, let it dry for a while so that the papers get stuck in a nice manner. We are ready with the base, and we are going to increase the aesthetics using some beautiful paper cutouts that you can observe on the right hanside. So I'm having these beautiful circular cutouts of paper, having this beautiful details and the entire paper is in white form, so it will create a nice contrast with the maroon background. So we're going to place it on the maroon background, and we're not going to place it in this circular manner. We'll just cut it in a semicircular manner and one in quarter. Now, no need to worry at all in case you do not have this beautiful cut out of paper. It is absolutely fine. You can still take up the entire card without adding this paper cutout. So now let me show you the process. I'll just use my scissor and I'll just cut it into this semicircular shape. So you just have to cut it into equal halves. Now, we are going to place one of the piece on one edge of the paper base that we have created in this manner. And similarly, I'll just take a quarter piece of the remaining half as well. So take the remaining half and cut it into again, two equal halves. You get a nice quarter of this beautiful cutout and we're going to place it on the corner. So this is how we are going to place both the cutouts. Now, again, I'm going to use some glue to apply the cutouts on the paper base. Now simply take the designed paper cutout, flip it over, apply the glue on the backhand side. No need to apply a lot of glue, apply a little bit of glue on the paper surface. Now, once we apply the glue on the paper surface, we are going to spread it using our finger again. So there is these little details on the outer portion of the cut out. So there you can apply a little bit of glue. It's a very thin sheet of paper, so it will not require a lot of glue. That's why you just have to apply a little bit of glue and spread it using the tip of your glue. It is absolutely fine. Now, simply, I'll just flip the cut out again and place it on the right hand side of the paper base that we have created. Use your thumbs and just place the cut out carefully, align it with the maroon paper edge, and let the white paper border be visible. Apply some pressure using your fingers so that the cutout will get stuck with the paper base. Now, let it dry for a while and let us place the quarter sheet as well. So I'll take this little cutout of paper as well, and we're going to apply some glue on that. These steps are absolutely same. Apply a little bit of glue on the back inside. Simply spread it a little bit and just place it on the corner of the maroon paper sheet. No need to hurry at all. Take your time and try to apply it in a nice manner. Now, once we are done applying the glue, I'll just flip the paper cut out, put it on the corner of the maroon sheet, apply some pressure using your fingers and let it dry for a while. So we are done creating the card base. I hope that you got an exact idea of how you have to create this beautiful card base. I'll just remove some extra edge from the right hand side of the white paper using my scissors. So I hope that you got an exact idea of how you have to create the paper base. Now let us move towards the next part. 5. Adding Text: Hey, everyone. Now let us add some text to the card base that we have created. So here I have the remaining scrape of white paper that I saved earlier. So as I told you, always try to save paper. No need to waste. So now using this scrape of paper, we are going to add a beautiful text element to the entire card. So I'll just put one side of my ruler at zero centimeter on the paper edge and put a dot at 6 centimeters. Now simply rotate your ruler and make it vertical and draw a line till 1.5 centimeters. So this is how we get this beautiful small rectangular shape. I'll just create another line. You just have to make this rectangular shape, which is having length 6 centimeters and breadth 1.5 centimeters. Similarly, we'll have another tag. So just simply put 0 centimeters at the lower corner of the rectangle and put a dot at 5 centimeters. Now, this box will be 5 centimeters by 6 centimeters. If you have a very easy technique to create these boxes, it is absolutely fine. So these are the measurements that we have taken. Now we'll just separate the boxes by using a simple scissor. So there is going to be this little rectangular shape which is going to have happy birthday, and the bigger rectangular shape will be having a small message in it. I'll be using a simple scissor to remove the rectangles. No need to hurry at all, simply follow the pencil line. I'll just give one more cut, and we are ready with both pieces. You can observe a nice, small rectangular shape, and a big rectangular shape. We're going to add text to it. So again, I'll use my ruler and I'll create a simple horizontal line in this small rectangular shape so that when we write, we get a nice straight text. I've created a light pencil line which is less visible. Once we get this reference line, I'll take my black marker. So we are going to use a simple black marker from art line, and it is having a nice thin tip with solid black color. You can use any good alternative. It is absolutely fine. Now in this small rectangular sheet of paper, we are going to write happy birthday. I know it is a little bit less visible. Extremely sorry about that, but it is going to be happy birthday only, and you can write it in your own manner. It is absolutely fine. I'm writing it in the best way possible. It just has to look aesthetically appealing. So that's why you can write it in your own handwriting. So now we are done writing happy birthday in this small little portion of white paper. Now, similarly, we are going to add another message in this bigger rectangular shape that we have created. So again, I'll take a simple pencil and my ruler, place it parallel to the paper edge. And we're going to draw three simple reference lines which are going to be in equal distance. And you can take it approximately. It is absolutely fine. No need to take these minor measurements. And if you want to, it is absolutely fine again. So I'll create another line just below the first one and the last one. So we are done adding three basic reference lines, which will help us to write in a very straight manner. Now again, I'll be using my same black marker from Artline, and the message that we are going to add is going to be wishing you a lot of happiness and success ahead. A So we are done writing the entire message. At the end, I'll add these little dots to create some aesthetics. You can write in your own handwriting. It is absolutely fine. Just make sure that it looks a little bit aesthetic. Now, in order to enhance the letters, I'll just fill some solid black colour in certain letters so that it looks really nice. It is not at all compulsory for you to create a happy birthday card only. You are free to explore and experiment. It can be any other message as well. So you can use the card in any other purpose also. So once we are done enhancing the entire message, we are going to add a little color palette in the bottom portion using some different colored sketch pens. No need to worry about the colors. You can use any random colors. I'm having these beautiful shades of blue, green, and a simple brown color. And one by one, I'll be applying it on the bottom portion of the message that we have written. So just simply place your tag in a comfortable position and create a little circular shape. No need to hurry at all, take your time and apply these little colors. You'll definitely enjoy the entire process. Now the reason behind applying this little color palette in the bottom portion is to make the entire message look a little bit creative and aesthetic, and colors basically adds a little bit of joyfulness to the entire card. So one by one, randomly you can use any good color that you like and create this little color palette. A so now you can observe that we are done adding this beautiful color palette on the bottom portion. You can also repeat certain colors. It is absolutely fine. Now, once we are done creating both the message tags, the happy birthday one, and the message one, we are going to enhance it even more by adding a little layer of brown outline. But before that, just remove the reference line that we drew initially using a pencil and ruler to write the message in a straight manner. Use a simple eraser and gently apply it on the paper surface. Once you apply the eraser, the pencil line will not be visible. Now you can simply remove the dust and you can observe that we get both the messages in this clean manner. Now I'll be using a simple brown paper to create a nice brown outline in this white message. Let me take you a little bit closer so that you can observe the message tag carefully. It is having a nice vibrant color in the background. Now what we are going to do is that we will place both the tags using this double sided tape. You can observe the thickness of the double sided tape. So it basically gives a nice three d effect to the entire tag. Now simply flip the message tag and apply a little piece of double sided tape on the back hand side. Similarly, you can put four more pieces on the corners of the tag. In case you do not have a double sided tape, it is absolutely fine. You can directly use some glue and apply it on the brown paper. Now, once we are done applying all the little pieces of double sided tape on the paper, remove the back sticker so that you get stickiness on the backhand side as well. Slowly remove the back sticker. No need to hurry at all. You can observe that I have almost removed all these stickers from the back inside. Now it is having stickiness and a little bit of thickness. Now simply make sure that you leave a little bit of space on the brown paper and apply some pressure using your fingers and place the message tag. You can observe that I have left some space on the topmost portion and left hand side. Similarly, I'll take the happy birthday message, and I'll place two little pieces of the double sided tape on this particular message as well. Now, once we have applied the double sided tape, remove the back sticker again. Now, I'll put this particular tag on the brown paper as well. Again, make sure that you leave a little bit of space on the topmost portion and left hand side, of course. So we are done applying the tags on the brown paper. Now, to get a beautiful brown border, you just have to use a simple pair of scissors and be a little bit careful because we are going to remove it from the brown paper. So make sure that you leave a little bit of space and make sure that your brown paper is a little bit visible. So I'm leaving some space. So we are done with the first tag. Similarly, I'll just remove the happy birthday as well. And we are done. So right now you can observe that we are having this beautiful brown border on all the four sides of the tag. In case you find that there is a little bit of extra brown paper, you can remove it using your scissors. Now you can observe in both the tags, we are having this beautiful brown border and a little bit of three d effect, which gives an ice depth to both our messages. Now, once we are done with the message tag, we are going to place it on the paper base that we created. So you are free to explore and experiment and you can compose according to your convenience. You can place the message wherever you want to. I'm going to place it a little bit towards the left hand side on the paper base because we are going to create a nice vase on the right hand side. So we are going to place it in this manner. Now, the process is absolutely simple. You just have to take some glue. I'll take one of the tags, which is Happy Birthday one, and I'll apply a little bit of glue on the back inside. No need to hurry at all, apply some decent amount of glue so that it gets stuck with the base of the paper. Use your finger to spread the glue in this particular manner and make sure that you apply the glue on the corners. Now simply place the tag on the paper base and apply some pressure using your fingers. No need to hurry at all. Make sure that you have applied the message tag in a perfect manner, leaving some space from the top and left hand side. Apply some decent amount of pressure using your fingers so that the message is completely stuck with the paper base. Let it dry for a while and let us apply the second tag as well. So I'll take the backside of the tag, apply some glue. Apply some decent amount of glue because it will need some glue to get stuck with the paper base and simply use your finger to spread the glue. Make sure that you apply the glue on the corners of the paper. Now, once we are done spreading the glue, we are going to paste it on the paper base, leave some space from the happy birthday tag in between, and no need to hurry at all, place it in this nice manner and align it with the first tag. Now, again, we are going to apply some pressure using our fingers so that the message gets completely stuck with the paper base. Now, let it dry for a while, and we are done adding the text to our beautiful card. You can observe the composition of the background and the tags that we have created. You're free to explore and experiment, so no need to worry about the output. And as I told you, it is not supposed to be a happy birthday card only. You can use it for any other purpose, as well. I hope that you enjoyed adding text to the card. Now let us move towards the next part. 6. Creating a Paper Vase: Hey, on. Welcome to the last step, which is creating a paper vase. You can observe a little bit of space left on the right hand side, and I'm going to take a little piece of brown paper from the remaining brown paper, of course. There is no specific measurement for this particular rectangular shape. It is having a small width and length approximately. Now, I'll just use a simple sketch pen and give it a nice turn. You can observe it carefully, use your fingers so that the paper will get a nice fold. Now, we are going to just create it into this little cylindrical shape. You can remove the extra portion using a pair of scissors. So we just want this much portion. So I'll just cut the extra portion. No need to hurry at all. Take your time and try to create a little cylindrical shape in which we are going to put some dried flowers. So now I'll just open it and show you this is the rectangular piece of paper that we have got. Turn it and convert it into this little cylindrical shape. Now since it is having a bigger length, I'll just remove some extra portion. So simply make a cut and get a smaller rectangular shape. Now in order to convert this particular part into a vase, you're going to use a little bit of glue, and this is how the entire vase will look. So I'll take a little bit of glue and put it on the edge of the paper. Apply a little bit of glue only since it is required in this particular area only. Now put it on the other edge of the cylinder. Now apply some pressure using your fingers and thumb and hold it for a while, because it will take a little bit of time to dry. In case you want to put a sellotape on it, it is absolutely fine. So as you can observe, we are done with the vase, and we are going to place it on the right hanside of the card base. So this is where I'm going to place it. You're free to compose and experiment, so you can place it wherever you want to. I'll apply a little bit of glue on the card base. Now take the cylinder and put it on the portion where we have applied some glue. No need to hurry at all, take your time and carefully put the cylindrical shape. So I have placed the vase and I'll apply a little bit of pressure inside the cylinder. You can use a pencil also. Now, we are done creating the vase. Let us enhance its beauty by creating a little bow. So I'll take a simple white thread and convert it into a little bow. Take your white thread, surround it in both the fingers, and create a simple knot. No need to hurry at all, take your time and simply create a little bow. You can adjust the bow according to your convenience in case you want to keep it a little bit bigger, it is absolutely fine. I'm just trying to convert it into a small bow. Now, once we have converted it into a small bow, we can remove the additional thread. You can observe how beautiful the little bow is looking. In case you do not have a white thread, you can use any other thread as well. You can use any good alternative. I have simply removed the extra part from the bow, and we are going to place it on the vase. You can observe it creates a beautiful contrast with the brown color. Use a little bit of glue and apply a little dot of glue on the vase. Now, once you have applied some glue on the vase, I'll just take our bow and place it on the vase. No need to hurry at all, put it carefully. I'm having a tweezer, but you can use your fingers. It is absolutely fine. Now, let it dry for a while, and here I am having these beautiful red flowers, which are dried flowers, basically. In case you are missing out on these flowers, you'll find it very easily in any nearby local art store. Now simply, we are going to put it inside the vase that we have created. And trust me, it is a very satisfying process. You'll definitely enjoy it. Now using my tweezer, I have just put the flowers inside the vase that we have created, and I'll just use my fingers to spread these flowers. So we are ready with our card. All the elements are placed at place. Let me take you a little bit closer so that you can observe all the details carefully. You can observe it is a very simple and minimal happy birthday card, and we have combined these little elements together using some basic craft work. It is not at all compulsory for you to create the card in the exact same way. You're free to explore and experiment.
