step by step, starting from the basics and moving to
advanced techniques. We will begin with Premiere Pro, where you will learn how to
quickly remove green screen using the Ultra Key effect
and create clean results. Then we will move to
After Effects where you will learn advanced
keying using Keylight, along with techniques like
mat refinement, edge cleanup, spill suppression, masking and color correction to achieve professional and
cinematic results. I will also show you real world examples, common mistakes, and practical workflows that professionals use
in the industry. By the end of this course, you will be able to remove
green screen confidently, fix complex problems like
hair edges and color spill, and match your subject

2. Remove Green Screen Using Ultra Key in Premiere Pro: You want to remove green
screen in just 2 minutes? Or maybe your green
screen looks messy, edges look bad, or green
color is still visible? In this video, I'll show
you step by step how to remove green screen perfectly
in Premiere Pro 2026, along with some pro tips that
most beginners don't know. Now, on the timeline, we have two video layers. On Track V one, we have
the background video, and on track V two, we have
the green screen footage. Now let's remove the
green screen background from our footage and to remove, go to the Effects panel
and search for Ultra Key. Drag and drop this effect
onto your green screen clip. Ultra Key is the main tool used for removing green screen. It is a powerful feature
that allows you to remove green or blue backgrounds and replace them with any
background you want. This process is also
called chroma key, which means removing a specific
color from your footage. Now, go to Effect Controls, select the eyedropper tool and click on the
green background. And just like that,
your green screen is removed instantly. Now, let's zoom into the program monitor and you can see that we are
getting a good result. Now, let's understand one
of the most important but often ignored settings inside Ultra Key, the output option. When you click on
the output dropdown, you will see three
options composite, Alpha channel, and
color channel. These are not effects that
change your video directly, but instead, they change
the way you see your key. In simple words, they
help you analyze and understand how well your green
screen has been removed. By default, the output
is set to composite. This is the normal view where
everything looks finished. You can see your subject clearly the green
background is removed, and if you have added
a new background, it will appear
behind your subject. This is the view most people use because it shows
the final result. However, this view can
sometimes be misleading. Even if your video
looks good here, there might still be
small problems that are not visible
like rough edges, noise or slight
transparency issues. To truly check the quality
of your green screen, you need to switch
to Alpha channel. As soon as you select this mode, your video will turn
into black and white. In this view, White represents the visible
part of your subject, and black represents
the removed background. This is where you can clearly see the accuracy of your key. If your subject
appears completely white and the background
is pure black, then your key is clean. But in most cases, you will
notice some gray areas. These gray areas
indicate problems. If the subject has gray patches, it means parts of
it are becoming slightly transparent,
which should not happen. If the background
is not fully black, it means some unwanted
elements are still visible. This view reveals everything
that composite hides, and that is why professionals rely on Alpha channel
to refine their work. Once you understand
what needs to be fixed, you can adjust your
Ultra Key settings while staying in
Alpha channel mode. The third option
is color channel. This mode helps
you understand how Premiere Pro is detecting the green color in your footage. It shows you the color information
being used for keying. This is especially useful when your green screen is uneven, has shadows or different
shades of green. If something is not
working correctly, this mode allows you to troubleshoot the
issue and understand where the problem is coming now let's change
to Alpha channel. Now, let's understand another very important
option inside Ultra Key, which is called the setting. This option controls
how strongly or gently Premiere Pro removes the green
screen from your footage. When you click on
this drop down, you will see four
options default, relaxed, aggressive, and custom. Each of these settings changes the behavior of the
keying process, and choosing the
right one can make a big difference in
your final result. Let's start with default. This is the standard
setting that Premiere Pro applies
automatically. It is designed to work well in most normal situations where your green screen is properly
lit and evenly exposed. Your footage is clean and there are no major
lighting issues, default will usually give
you a good starting point. Most of the time, you can
begin with this option and then fine tune the result
using other controls. Next is relaxed. As
the name suggests, this mode applies a softer
and more gentle key. It removes the green screen more carefully without
being too aggressive. This is useful when your subject has fine details like hair, soft edges or motion blur. In such cases, a
strong key might remove parts of the
subject accidentally, but relaxed helps preserve
those delicate details. However, the trade off
is that it may leave some green areas behind which you will need
to clean up later. Now let's look at aggressive. This setting does the
opposite of relaxed. It applies a stronger
and more forceful key to remove the green screen
as much as possible. It is useful when your
background is uneven has shadows or when the green color is not perfectly consistent. Aggressive mode helps eliminate more of the unwanted
background quickly, but you need to be
careful because it can also start cutting
into your subject, especially around edges
like hair or thin objects. So while it gives a
cleaner background, it may damage fine
details if overused. Finally, we have custom. This option becomes active
when you start manually adjusting the Ultra Key
controls like transparency, highlight, shadow,
or other parameters. In this mode, you are no longer relying on
preset behavior. Instead, you are fully
controlling how the key works. This is the mode professionals use when they want
complete precision. It allows you to fine
tune every detail and achieve the best possible
result for difficult footage. So always remember
this setting option is not just a simple preset. It defines how Ultra Key
behaves with your footage. Choosing the right mode at the right time will save
you a lot of effort and help you achieve
a cleaner and more professional
green screen result. Now let's move to
the most important and powerful section
of Ultra Key, which is called Mt generation. This is the heart of
green screen removal. If you understand this
section properly, you can fix almost any
green screen problem and achieve a clean
professional result. When you open math generation, you will see several
controls like transparency, high light, shadow,
tolerance, and pedestal. These controls work
together to define how your subject is separated
from the background. In simple words,
this section creates the black and white mask that we saw earlier in the
Alpha channel. Let's start with transparency. This control decides how much of the selected color which is your green screen
becomes transparent. As you increase transparency, more of the background
gets removed, but you need to be careful because if you push it too high, it can start affecting
your subject as well, especially around the edges. So the goal here is to
remove the background without damaging the
subject. Next is highlight. This control affects the
brighter areas of your image. If your green screen has
bright spots or reflections, adjusting the highlight can
help clean those areas. Increasing it can remove lighter shades of
green, but again, too much adjustment
can start eating into bright parts of your subject.
Then we have shadow. This works on the darker
areas of your footage. If your background has
shadows or uneven lighting, this control helps remove
those darker green tones. It is especially useful when your green screen
is not evenly lit. By adjusting shadow,
you can clean up areas that look darker or
dirty in the background. Now comes tolerance. This is a very important
control because it defines how wide
the color range is. In other words, it tells Premiere Pro how many shades
of green should be removed. If your green screen
is perfectly even, you can keep this lower. Finally, we have pedestal. This control helps remove
any leftover noise or faint background that is
still visible after keying. It pushes the darker
areas towards full black, making the background cleaner. It is very useful for removing subtle artifacts that you might not notice
in composite view, but are clearly visible
in Alpha channel. If MT generation is responsible for removing
the green screen. Then MT cleanup is
responsible for refining and polishing the
edges of your subject. This is the step
where your video starts to look clean
and professional. After removing the background, you may notice that the edges of your subject are not perfect. Sometimes they look rough,
sometimes slightly blurred, or sometimes you may see a thin green outline
around the subject. Mat cleanup is used to
fix all of these issues. Let's begin with the first
control, which is choke. This setting is used to shrink the edges of your
subject slightly inward. Imagine your subject has a thin, unwanted border around it. By increasing choke,
you are basically tightening the edges and
removing that extra outline. This is very useful when you see green edges or leftover
background around your subject, but you have to be careful because if you
increase it too much, it can start cutting into your subject and make
it look unnatural. Next is soften. As
the name suggests, this control smooths the
edges of your subject. After applying choke, sometimes the edges can look
too sharp or harsh. Soften helps blend those edges more naturally with
the background. It creates a
smoother transition, which is especially
important when you are compositing your subject
into a new environment. However, using too much soften can make your
subject look blurry, so it should always
be used gently. Now, let's talk about contrast. This control adjusts
the difference between the edges of your
subject and the background. Increasing contrast
makes the edges more defined and sharper, while decreasing it
makes them softer. It helps in balancing
the edge clarity. Edges look too faded,
increasing contrast can bring back detail, but if they look too harsh, you may need to
lower it slightly. Then we have midpoint. This control works closely
with contrast and helps balance the transition between visible and transparent areas. It shifts how the edge is interpreted between black
and white in the mask. In simple terms, it allows you to fine tune where
the edge sits. Small adjustments here can make a big difference in achieving
a natural looking edge. Now let's move to the next very important
section inside Ultra Key, which is called
spill suppression. Even after you remove the
green screen perfectly, you may still notice a slight green color
on your subject, especially around the edges, hair or reflective surfaces. This unwanted green
tint is called spill. It usually happens
because green light from the background reflects onto
the subject during shooting. Spill suppression is
used to remove or reduce that green color and make your subject look natural again. Let's start with the first
control, which is desaturate. This setting reduces
the intensity of the green color
on your subject. When you increase it, the
green tint starts fading away. This is usually the
first adjustment you make when you
see green edges. However, if you
push it too much, it can remove natural colors
from your subject as well, making the image look dull, so it should be increased carefully until the
green is removed, but the subject
still looks natural. Next is range. This
control defines how much of the color range will be affected by spill suppression. In simple terms, it decides how wide the area
of correction is. If your green spill is strong and spread across
multiple shades, increasing the range will help
cover more of those areas. But if you increase it too much, it might start affecting colors that are not actually
part of the spill. Then we have spill. This
is the main control that directly targets and
removes the green reflection. It adjusts how aggressively Premiere Pro neutralizes
the spill color. Increasing this value will reduce green tones
more strongly. This is very useful when the
spill is clearly visible, especially on hair or edges. But again, too much
adjustment can start affecting the natural
color of your subject. Finally, there is Luma. This control affects
the brightness of the areas where spill
suppression is applied. Sometimes when you
remove green spill, those areas can become
darker or uneven. Luma helps balance
the brightness so that the subject blends
naturally with the background. I ensures that the
correction does not create unnatural shadows or patches now let's move to the final section
inside Ultra Key, which is called
color correction. Color correction
helps you adjust these properties so that
everything blends naturally. Let's start with saturation. This control adjusts
the intensity of colors in your subject. If your subject
looks too colorful or overly vibrant compared
to the background, you can reduce the saturation. On the other hand,
if the subject looks dull or washed out, you can increase it slightly. The goal is to match the color intensity of your subject with the
environment behind it. Next is hue. Control shifts the overall color
tone of your subject. It allows you to slightly change the color balance so that it fits better with the background. For example, if
your background has a warm tone like
sunset lighting, you may need to adjust the hue to give your subject
a warmer feel. If the background is
cool like a cloudy day, you can shift the hue slightly
towards cooler tones. Small adjustments here can make a big difference
in realism. Then we have lumin this controls the brightness
of your subject. If your subject looks too bright compared to
the background, you can reduce luminance. If it looks too dark,
you can increase it. Matching brightness is one of
the most important steps in compositing because our eyes quickly notice when
lighting does not match. Now, press the Tilda key to enlarge the
program monitor view. Let's preview the result. And as you can see,
we are already getting a very clean
and good result. However, to make it
look more realistic, we need to match the subject
with the background color. So first, select your
green screen clip and place the right side where both clips are clearly visible. Now go to the
Lumetri Color panel. If you don't see it, go to the Window menu and
enable Lumetri color. Inside Lumetri, go to
color wheels and match. Then click on Comparison View. This will split the
screen into two views. On the left side, select the reference frame
from your background, and on the right
side, you will have your current clip where
the color will be applied. Now simply click on Apply match and adjust the
green screen subject clip. And now let's turn off the comparison view and
check the final result. And as you can see, the color of the subject is now much better
matched with the scene. Now let's play the final result. The biggest advantage of using green screen is that it gives you complete
creative freedom. You can place your subject
in any environment, whether it's a
professional studio, a cinematic background, or any location you imagine
without actually being there. Green screen also
helps you create high quality content
for YouTube, films, advertisements,
and social media, making your videos more engaging
and visually appealing. By using Ultra Key and
proper adjustments, you can turn simple footage into professional level
videos with ease.
3. Remove Green Screen Using Keylight in After Effects Part -1: You want to remove
green screen like a professional in After Effects? In this lesson, we are going
to learn how to remove green screen step by step using one of the most powerful
tools called Keylight. After Effects gives you much more control
compared to Premiere Pro, which means you can
achieve cleaner edges, better hair detail, and
more realistic results. Now we have two clips
in the timeline. The bottom layer
is the background, and the layer above is
the green screen footage. Now, let's remove the green
screen from this subject. To do this, go to the
Effects and Presets panel and search for Keylight. Then select the
Keylight Key cleaner, and Advanced spill
suppressor combination and drag it onto your footage. As soon as you apply
it, you will see the effect controls panel
showing three main tools. First Keylight then key cleaner and finally Advanced
spill suppressor. Inside Keylight, you will find an option called screen color. Select the eyedropper tool and click on the
green background. Instantly, the green
screen will be removed. This is the basic step, but the result may
not be perfect yet. For a better result, make sure advanced spill
suppressor is enabled. This will remove the green
color around the edges, especially in areas like hair. As you can see,
now we are getting a much cleaner and more
professional result. And now let me show
you some more options. First, let's disable
advanced spill suppressor and key cleaner so we can understand the
process more clearly. Next, if you look
at the view option, you will find multiple
output modes. These different views help you analyze and refine your
key more accurately. At first, you might
think this is just for a preview,
but in reality, this is where
professionals spend most of their time
while cleaning the key. By default, it is set
to intermediate result, and this shows the result before final edge corrections and
spill suppression are applied. It helps you understand
how much improvement is happening in later
next, we have source. This simply shows
the original footage without any keying applied. It is useful when you want to compare your result
with the original clip. Then comes source Alpha. This shows the Alpha channel of the original footage
if it exists. In most green screen clips, this will not be very useful, but it can help in
advanced workflows. Corrected source shows
your footage after basic color corrections
applied by Keylight, but before the final
key is generated. This helps you understand how Keylight is preparing
the image internally. Color correction edges displays only the edges where color
correction is being applied. This is helpful when
you want to see how well your edges are being
blended and corrected. Next, if you switch
to screen mat, your image turns into
black and white. In this view, white
represents your subject, and black represents
the removed background. This is the most important
view for keying. If your subject
is not completely white or your background
is not fully black. Your key is not clean. This mode helps you
clearly identify holes, transparency issues, and
leftover background. Inside mask shows only
the selected subject area that will remain visible. Outside mask shows the opposite, the area that will be removed. These views are
useful when you are working with masks or isolating specific regions combined mat shows a combined black and
white mat of your key, similar to screen mat, but with additional processing. Helps in analyzing the
overall mask more precisely. And status is a technical view that shows how well
the key is performing. It uses different colors
to indicate problem areas, such as areas that are
not properly keyed. This is more advanced but very useful when dealing
with difficult footage. And intermediate result
shows the result before final edge corrections and
spill suppression are applied. It helps you understand how much improvement is
happening in later stages. And finally, final result shows the completed output that you will use in
your composition. Now in a professional workflow, editors do not stay
on final result. They switch to screen
mat to clean the key. Sometimes use status
to detect issues and then return to final
result for final preview. So always remember,
these view modes are not just for viewing. They are tools that
help you understand, fix and perfect
your green screen. The better you use them, the cleaner and
more professional your final result will be. Now let's move to the most
important part of Keylight, which is the screen mat section. Is where the real
keying work happens, and this is the section
that decides how clean and professional your green screen
result will look. Let's start with clip black. This control is used to remove
the remaining background. As you increase clip black, the darker areas of your image are pushed
toward pure black. This helps eliminate
unwanted noise and leftover green screen that
might still be visible. You should slowly
increase this value until your background
becomes fully black, but be careful not to
overdo it because it can start affecting shadow
areas of your subject. Next is clip white. This works on the opposite side. It makes your subject
more solid by pushing the brighter
areas toward pure white. Parts of your subject look
transparent or faded, increasing clip white
will help restore them. Again, this should be
done carefully because too much adjustment can make edges harsh or lose fine detail. To understand this better, let's switch to
final result view. As I adjust the
clip white value, you can clearly see the changes happening in the
composition window. Now we have clip rollback. This control is used to
recover details that may have been lost while adjusting
clip black and clip white. If you feel like your
key has become too aggressive and is cutting
into your subject, you can use clip rollback to bring back some of
that lost information. It helps balance the key
without starting from scratch. Next is screen shrink or grow. This is used to adjust the
edges of your subject. If you see unwanted
outlines or leftover edges, you can slightly shrink the
mat inward to remove them. If needed, you can
also grow it outward. This control is very useful for fine edge adjustments and should be used in small amounts
for best results. Then comes screen softness. This control softens the
edges of your subject, making them blend more
naturally with the background. Without softness, edges can look too sharp and artificial. With a slight softness, the transition becomes
more realistic, but too much softness can make
your subject look blurry, so it should always
be applied gently. Now, let's talk about screen despot black and
screen despot white. These controls are
used to remove small noise or
imperfections in the mat. Screen despot black cleans up unwanted white spots
in the background, and screen despot white fixes small black holes
inside the subject. These are very useful
when your key has tiny imperfections that are not easily visible in
the final result, but can affect quality. As I adjust the values, you can clearly see the changes in the composition window. Now, let me show you one more example to better
understand screen mat. Go to the project panel, select this cat clip and
drag it onto the timeline. Now apply the Keylight effect. As soon as I remove
the green color, you can notice that there is some transparency
on the cat's body. To understand this
problem more clearly, let's switch the
view to screen mat. Now you can see the image
in black and white. There are some gray
and white patches in the background and some black
patches inside the subject. These patches are the main
reason for the problem. To fix this footage, we start by cleaning
the background. Increase the value of clip black slowly until the background
becomes solid black, but don't increase it too much. Now adjust clip white by
increasing it slightly until the subject becomes solid white and those black
patches disappear. As you can see, the mat
now looks much cleaner. Now switch back to
intermediate result and enable advanced
spill suppressor. And now you can see
the footage is fixed, and there is no unwanted
transparency on the cat's body. Now let's go back
to our main clip and understand some
more tools in detail. Finally, we have replace
method and replace color. These options are used for advanced color
correction at the edges. Replace method defines how
edge colors are adjusted, and replace color allows you to replace unwanted color tones, such as green spill with
a more natural color. This helps improve edge blending and reduces
color contamination. The most important
thing to understand is that all these
controls work together. You don't rely on
just one setting. Instead, you make small
adjustments while observing your result
preferably in screen mat view. Your goal is to achieve a clean black background and a solid white subject
with smooth edges. Now, let's understand another
very important section inside Keylight which is called foreground
color correction. After removing the green
screen and cleaning the edges, sometimes your subject
still doesn't look natural. The colors may look dull, too strong, or not properly
matching with the back. Is where foreground color
correction comes into play. First, you need to enable this option by turning on
enable color correction. Once you enable it, you
will be able to control different color properties of your subject directly
inside Keylight. Let's start with saturation. This controls the intensity
of colors in your subject. If your subject looks
too dull after keying, you can increase the saturation
to bring back the color. On the other hand, if the colors look too strong or unnatural, you can reduce it slightly. The goal is to make
the subject look balanced and natural
compared to the background. Next is contrast. This adjusts the
difference between the light and dark
areas of your subject. Increasing contrast makes
the image more sharp and punchy while decreasing it
makes it softer and flatter. This is useful when
your subject looks too flat after removing
the green screen. Then we have brightness. This controls the overall
light level of your subject. If your subject looks darker or brighter
than the background, you can adjust brightness to match the
lighting conditions. Matching brightness
is very important for realistic compositing
because our eyes quickly notice when
lighting does not match. Now let's talk about
color suppression. This option helps reduce
unwanted color contamination, especially from
the green screen. Even after spill suppression, sometimes a slight
green tint can remain. Color suppression
helps neutralize those unwanted tones and makes
the subject look cleaner. Finally, we have
color balancing. This allows you to fine tune the overall color
tone of your subject. You can adjust how warm
or cool the subject appears so that it matches
the background environment. Example, if your background
has warm lighting, you may want to slightly warm
up your subject as well. The most important thing
to understand is that foreground color
correction is not about making your subject
look better alone, but about making it match
perfectly with the background. You are blending the
subject into a scene, not editing it separately. In a professional workflow, this step is used at the final stage after keying
and cleanup are complete. Small adjustments here can make a huge difference
in realism. Let's move to another very important section
inside Keylight, which is called edge
color correction. After removing the green
screen and cleaning the mat, you may still notice that the edges of your subject
do not look natural. Sometimes the edges appear
too sharp, too soft, slightly discolored, or they don't blend properly
with the background. This is where edge color
correction becomes very useful. First, enable this option by turning on enable edge
color correction. Once enabled, you can start adjusting the edge
specific controls. First, let's switch to
the color correction edges view so we can clearly
see the edge adjustments. Let's begin with edge hardness. This control defines
how sharp or hard the edges of
your subject appear. If the edges look
too soft or blurry, you can increase edge hardness
to make them more defined. On the other hand, if the edges look too harsh or unnatural, you may want to keep
this value lower. Next is edge softness. This works in the opposite way. It softens the edges
and helps create a smoother transition between the subject and the background. This is very important for
realistic compositing, especially when
placing your subject into a new environment. However, too much softness can make the subject
look out of focus, so it should be
adjusted carefully. Then we have edge grow. This control expands or contracts the edges
of your subject. Increasing it slightly can help fill in thin areas or recover edge details decreasing it can tighten the edges and
remove unwanted outlines. This is particularly useful when dealing with fine
details like hair. Now let's look at saturation. This adjusts the color intensity specifically around the edges. After keying, edges may lose color or pick up
unwanted green tones. Adjusting saturation
helps restore natural color to those areas without affecting
the entire subject. Next is contrast. This helps define the
edges by adjusting the difference between light and dark areas along the edge. Increasing contrast
can make edges more distinct while reducing it
can soften them slightly. Let's switch back to
final result view so we can clearly see
the overall changes. And next, we have brightness. This adjusts how light or
dark the edges appear. If your edges look darker or lighter than the
rest of the subject, you can correct them here
to maintain consistency. Now let's move to another important section
inside Keylight, which is edge color suppression, along with color balancing. This section is mainly used to fix unwanted color
problems that remain around the edges after removing the green even after
using spill suppression, sometimes you can still notice a slight green tint along
the edges of your subject, especially in hair
or fine details. This is where edge
color suppression helps clean those
areas more precisely. First, you will see an
option called suppress, and let's set it to green. This means Keylight
will specifically target and remove green
color from the edges. If you were working
with a blue screen, you would change this to blue. So this setting simply tells the software which color
needs to be suppressed. Next is suppression balance. This control adjusts how evenly the color suppression is
applied across the edges. By changing this value, you can control how the
correction spreads, making sure it looks smooth and natural instead of patchy. Then we have suppression amount. This is the main control
that determines how strongly the unwanted
color is removed. As you increase this value, the green tint on the edges
will gradually disappear. However, if you
push it too high, it can start affecting the
natural color of your subject, making the edges look
dull or unnatural, so it's important to
find a balanced value. Now, let's talk about
color balancing. After removing the
unwanted green color, sometimes the edges may look slightly off in
terms of color tone. Color balancing helps
you correct that. The hue control allows you to shift the color tone
of the edges slightly. This is useful if
the edges feel too warm or too cool compared
to the rest of the subject. The saturation
control adjusts how intense or dull the
edge colors appear. If the edges look faded
after suppression, you can increase saturation slightly to restore
natural color. Finally, we have
the color balance. Gives you more visual
and precise control. You can drag the point inside the wheel to shift
the edge colors toward a more natural tone that matches your
subject and background. This is especially
useful when you want fine control over how the
edges blend into the scene. The most important
thing to understand is that this section focuses
only on the edges. It does not affect
the entire subject. It helps you remove
unwanted color and then restore natural
tone specifically where it matters the most. The advanced spill suppressor
is specifically designed to remove that green color and restore natural tones
to your subject. Once you apply this effect, you will see a few
simple controls. The first option is method, which is usually set to
standard by default. Standard works well
for most cases, but if you want stronger
and more refined results, you can switch it to Ultra. Ultra mode provides
better color correction, especially for
difficult footage with strong green spill.
Next is suppression. This control determines how much of the green
color is removed. At higher values, more
green tint is eliminated. Most cases, keeping it around
a high value works well. But if you notice that
your subject is losing natural color or
looking desaturated, you can reduce it slightly
to maintain balance. Now we have completed
the process. Now, let's adjust
the subject's color more to achieve a
more natural look. And remember, color
correction always depends on the scene,

4. Remove Green Screen Using Keylight in After Effects Part -2: Let's talk about the
intermediate result output. When we switch to
intermediate result, you will notice that some
properties stop working, especially things like
background or color correction. Because of this, the colors may appear to revert back to
their original state. This happens because
the intermediate result shows the stage before final
corrections are applied. It allows you to focus only on the core keying process
without additional effects. Now, to understand
this more clearly, let's turn off key cleaner and
advanced spill suppressor. This way, we can see the raw key result and understand how the key is actually working before any final
refinements are applied. Now, let's understand another
very important effect in the green screen workflow, which is called key cleaner. After using Keylight, you may notice that even though
the background is removed, the edges of your subject
are not perfectly clean. Sometimes they look rough, slightly noisy or not properly blended
with the background. This is where key cleaner
helps improve the result. Key cleaner works on
refining the edges of your subject and making them
smoother and more natural. It is usually applied after
Keylight and before or along with spill suppression as part of a
professional workflow. Let's start with
additional edge radius. This control expands
the area around the edges where the cleaning
process is applied. By increasing this value, you allow key cleaner to
work on a wider edge region, which can help in smoothing
complex edges like hair. However, if you
increase it too much, it can start affecting areas
that should not be changed, so it should be
adjusted carefully. Next is reduced chatter. This setting helps remove flickering or noise
along the edges, especially in moving footage. Sometimes edges can appear unstable or shaky
frame by frame, and reduced chatter helps
stabilize those edges, making them look
cleaner over time. Then we have Alpha contrast. This control adjusts the
contrast of the Alpha channel, which means it affects
how sharp or soft the separation is between the
subject and the background. Increasing it can make
edges more defined, while decreasing it
can soften them. It helps you fine tune the edge quality depending
on your footage. Finally, we have strength. This is the overall intensity
of the key cleaner effect. At higher values, the effect becomes stronger and
more noticeable. In most cases, keeping
it high works well, but if you feel
like the edges are becoming too processed
or unnatural, you can reduce it slightly. Now let's understand
the method option inside Advanced
spill suppressor. Here you will see two
options standard and Ultra. This setting controls how the green spill is removed
from your subject. By default, it is
set to standard. This mode works well for
most basic situations. It removes the
green tint quickly and is also faster
in performance. If your footage is clean and the spill is
not very strong, standard mode is usually
enough to get a good result. Now let's switch to Ultra. Ultra mode provides a more advanced and
accurate spill removal. It does a better
job at preserving natural colors while
removing the green tint, especially in difficult
areas like hair, fine edges, and semi
transparent details. The suppressor
controls how much of the green spill is removed
from your subject. After removing the green screen, you may still notice a green
tint around the edges, especially in areas like
hair or fine details. Suppression helps reduce
that unwanted green color and restore a more natural look. As you increase the
suppression value, the green tint will
gradually disappear. This is very useful when the spill is strong
and clearly visible. Now let's adjust the color
using lumetri color. Go to the Effects
and Presets panel and search for Lumetri color, then drag and drop
it onto your clip. In the basic correction
section, we have temperature. This control adjusts the warmth or coolness of your image. When you increase
the temperature, your subject becomes warmer adding more yellow
and orange tones. When you decrease it, the image becomes cooler shifting
toward blue tones. This is very useful when your background has a
specific lighting mood like sunset or daylight and you want your subject to
match that environment. Next is tint. This
control shifts the color balance between
green and magenta. If your subject still has a slight green
tone after keying, you can move the tint toward
magenta to neutralize it. It helps fine tune
color balance, especially when dealing
with color contamination. Then we have saturation. This controls how intense
or dull the colors appear. If your subject looks too flat after removing
the green screen, you can increase saturation to bring back life
into the colors. If it looks too
strong or unnatural, you can reduce it slightly
to match the background. Now let's move to
the light section. Exposure controls the overall
brightness of your image. Increasing exposure makes
the image brighter, while decreasing it
makes it darker. This is useful when
your subject does not match the brightness
level of the background. Contrast adjust the difference between light and dark areas. Increasing contrast
makes the image more punchy and defined, while decreasing it
makes it softer. This helps in blending your subject naturally
into the scene. Highlights control the
brighter parts of your image. If the bright areas are
too strong or blown out, you can reduce highlights. If they look dull, you can
increase them slightly. Shadows control
the darker areas. If your subject looks too
dark in certain areas, you can lift the shadows. If it looks too flat, you can deepen them
to add more depth. Whites adjust the
brightest white areas, and blacks control the
darkest parts of the image. These help fine tune the overall tonal balance and improve the depth
of your subject. The most important thing
to remember is that these controls are not about making your subject
look better alone, but about making it
match the background. You are trying to create
a natural blend where the subject looks like it
truly belongs in the scene. Now let's move to the next
section inside lumetri color, which contains creative
adjustments that help enhance the overall
look of your video, and the sharpen increases the clarity and
detail of your image. It makes edges appear
more defined and crisp. A small amount of sharpening
can improve quality, especially after keying,
but too much can introduce noise and make
the image look unnatural. It should always
be used carefully. Vibrance is a smart color
control that increases the intensity of colors but mainly affects the
less saturated areas. It helps enhance colors without over
saturating skin tones, which makes it very useful for natural looking adjustments. Now let's adjust
the split toning, which gives you creative control over shadows and
highlights separately. On the left side, you can adjust the shadow tint to change the
color of the darker areas, and on the right
side, you can adjust the highlight tint to affect the brighter parts of the image. Next, let's move
to the RGB curves. Here we can fine tune
the colors even more. Adjust the red channel
slightly to match the scene, and then tweak the
green channel to balance the overall color
with the background. Now we have completed
all the adjustments. Let's take a look at
the final result. As you can see, we are getting a very clean and
natural looking output. And remember, it depends
on your workflow, whether you use
intermediate result or final result based on the type of footage and the level
of control you need. So we learned how to remove green screen in Adobe
After Effects using Keylight and refine it step by step for a clean and
professional result. We started by removing
the background, then improved the matte, cleaned the edges, and removed green spill to make the
subject look natural. Finally, by adjusting
color and lighting, we matched the subject
with the background and created a

5. Masking in Keylight – Protect & Remove Specific Areas: Now let's understand the mask
options inside Keylight, which include inside
mask and outside mask. These options are very useful when you want more control over which part of your footage should be affected by
the keying process. Now we have this footage and we want to remove the
green background. But as you can see, the
ball is also green. So if we apply
Keylight directly, the ball will also be affected. To fix this, we need to protect the ball from
the keying process, and for that, we
will use masking. First, select the clip, then double click on
the rectangle tool. This will create a mask that covers the entire composition. Now select the ellipse tool. And draw a mask around the ball. Since the ball is moving, we need to track it
using mask animation. Go to the mask path property and enable the stopwatch
to start key framing. Then move forward in time. Adjust the mask position
to follow the ball, and a new key frame will
be created automatically. Repeat this process throughout the clip so the mask
follows the ball smoothly. And Once the mask animation is complete, change the mask mode
from add to none. This ensures the mask is used only for
reference and control, not for cutting the footage. Now apply the Keylight effect to the clip and remove
the green background. I As you can see, the green ball also
becomes transparent. To restore it, we can use the mask as an inside
mask in Keylight and inside mask defines the area where Keylight will
actively apply the key. In simple words, it
tells After Effects to keep the keying effect only
inside a selected region. This is useful when
your subject is in a specific area and you want to ignore unwanted
parts of the frame. Now choose mask two, and this will protect the ball
from the Keylight effect. Next, switch the view mode to final result and turn
off the key cleaner, because in this mode, it can sometimes create an unwanted outline
around the subject. You may notice a slight gray
outline around the edges. So to fix this, go to the
screen mat section and slightly reduce the edge by adjusting the shrink
or grow setting. With a small adjustment,
the edges become clean, and now we get a
much better result. Now let's understand the
outside mask option. Outside mask works
in the opposite way. It tells Keylight to ignore everything outside
the selected area. This is very useful when
you want to isolate a specific part of the frame
and remove everything else. It becomes especially helpful when your green screen is not perfect or when there are
unwanted elements like lights, stands or uneven
edges in the scene. For example, if we want to remove only the green
ball from the scene, we can use outside mask. First, change the mask
mode from add to none. And then select mask
as the outside mask. As you can see, the
ball is now removed. Now, if you want to remove the subject instead of the ball, you can use the invert option. This reverses the mask area, allowing you to creatively control what stays and
what gets removed. Now let's undo that action and go back to the
previous step. Let's play the timeline, and you can see we are getting a clean and controlled result. Now, one important
thing to remember when working with mask
options inside Keylight, avoid using advanced spill suppressor for masking control. Mask options are
handled directly within Keylight and are not keyframe
based like normal masks. If you rely on spill
suppression for this, it will affect the
entire scene and may remove green color from
areas like the ball as well. Spill suppression should only
be used when you want to remove green reflections or color spill from your subject, not for masking purposes. So always use masks
for control and isolation and use
spill suppression only for color correction. This way, you will get a much more accurate and
professional result. The mask options in key lite provide greater control
over your green screen workflow by allowing
you to focus only on the important
areas of your footage. They help eliminate
unwanted elements, reduce errors caused
by uneven backgrounds, and make the keying process
more accurate and efficient. Limiting the effect
to a specific region, you can achieve cleaner
edges, faster adjustments, and better overall results, especially in
complex scenes where the entire frame does
not need to be keyed. This ultimately leads to a more polished and
professional final output.
