1. Introduction: Hello, and welcome to this class on sketching people. This is going to be a short class divided in three days. On each day, I'll be drawing along with you from different references that I gather to help you out in this class. All you need for this class is a sketchbook. One that you own already, or if you don't just find something on any format that you might be the most comfortable with. I'll be using this small sketchbook, but you can use whatever you want and in any format. Along with your sketchbook, we're going to be using a pen, a pencil, and an eraser. These are going to be our tools and it doesn't really matter their brands, the color, anything, just use something that is comfortable for you and that you already have at home. Besides these videos, I'll also give you an assignment so you can put into practice what you're learning right away. Are you ready to start sketching and getting more comfortable with your sketchbook, then jump right into it and I will see you in the next class. 2. People Resources & Your Assignment!: Right. Hello and welcome to this class. Now before we start drawing, I just want to talk to you about the places and how you can start doing the sketching habits, drawing people and where can you find the people to draw. Now, of course, you can just use your imagination or use yourself as a model. You can take pictures of yourself with different outfits that you like, use those pictures and draw them. You can also look up on the Internet. You can search for random situations that people are or for specific outfits. For example, you can go online and search for winter outfits or spring outfits. On the other hand, you can look for something like person reading a book, person walking outside or running, doing some kind of sport, drinking something, specific actions that you might want to draw. Some of these places that I like to search for some references are splash and pexels. These are my favorite use and they are free to so you can just search wherever you want and download those images if you want to use them. Or you can just look at your screen and sketch it very quickly, look for another photo, and so on and so on. For Pinterest, another cool thing about Pinterest is that as you might know, you can create some boards in there, you can basically make small collections of different photos and references that you might want to use, and whenever you want to sketch or draw something, you can just go into those collections you created your boards and you already have some references ready to use instead of having to search for them. Now, of course, one of the greatest practices you can do when drawing people is actually going outside and drawing the people you see outside. You can just go to a coffee place, for example, sit down. Ask for some coffee or any other drink, open up your sketchbook, get your pen ready, and just start sketching people that you see. You can also do this at the garden. What else? On the bus, on the subway or any other transport that you might write. There are many places that you can do this and it is a great practice. But the idea here is for you to not only be comfortable in drawing people, but also be comfortable in using your sketchbook. Remember that we just sketching here, we are not going to make a perfect drawing, a finalized drawing. This is just doodles. These are quick drawings from the images that we're seeing. We're trying to capture the main parts of the drawing, the pose, the outfit, the action that is being taken, and putting that into paper. These are not going to be perfect drawings. These are going to be sketches for you to practice and to learn to be more relaxed into using your sketchbook. So as for resources, I have a reference board for each day of sketching and each day is going to have a different theme. There are three different heffercebards for you to download, don't forget to do that. But of course, if you want, you can look up for your own references in the websites that I mentioned and use those for your sketches. It's totally up to you and you can draw whatever you want. For your assignments, the idea is for you to fill out a page or a spread of your sketchbook depending on how big it is. For example, if your sketchbook is a four page, you can just fill one page instead of a whole spread, but fill up at least one page of your sketchbook per day. Of course, this is just the minimum that you can do, but you can draw as many pauses as you want. If you want to fill up more than one page, then go ahead. If you want to fill out a spread, you can do that as well. It's totally up to you to the time you have and the energy you have as well. This is it for now. Follow me to the next video where we're going to start our sketching. 3. Day 1 - Make It Fashion - Outfits & Garbs: Hello, and welcome back. Are you ready to draw because that's exactly what we'll be doing right now. I got here my materials, my pen, pencil, and eraser, as well as my sketchbook. I also got for day one, my first reference board that I have here on my computer. I'll leave it perhaps somewhere here on the screen so you can look at it while we draw. The first day day one of sketching people is all about outfits. Let's make it fashion and draw some outfits. I'll just open my sketchbook. Since my sketchbook is rather small, the idea here is to fill out these two pages. You can sketch your people as big or as small as you want. But just remember that if you're drawing it too small, it starts to get a bit more difficult to add details and sometimes you get a bit confused with the proportions because everything is really small. But it's totally up to you. I tend to draw smallish so we'll see how it goes and we'll start I would recommend you to just go in with a pen because I feel that I know it feels scary, but it makes it easier, believe me, because you stop thinking too hard about the poses, about the outfits, and so on, and just jump in and start drawing what you see. But we can still for the start for you to start and so it's a bit less overwhelming, we'll start with the pencil. What we'll do here is take a look at reference image and we'll just focus on shapes when using a pencil. So I'm going to start with that first reference right there, the girl with the head. As you can see, I'm going very loose with my pencil and I'm just drawing some shapes here, very, very simple. No just the arms here. Going here, another arm, going here and the ends encounter each other here at the middle. There we go. So this is it, just a simple shape. And now I'm going to pick my pen and I'm going to start drawing the outfit. So far, I just had the base shapes for the body, and now I want to draw the actual outfit. Now, I'm not really focusing a lot on facial features here. I just want to draw the outfit itself, and this is just a sketch. I just want to capture what I need to capture very quickly using very few lines. Just look at your image. This doesn't need to be perfect right. Even the hands, I'm not really focusing on them being very atomically perfect. I just want to have here my outfit drawn. There we go. All we're missing now is our head and we can add some stripes here to the shirt. I don't have many colors here and I'm just going to feel here our head. There we go, our first drawing. Now, what I will do afterwards is erase all these lines, the pencil lines, but since I'll just let it dry for a bit, so I don't mess my sketch. All right. Next one, we can go for the girl with a skateboard. Now we can't really see the girl's face, but since we are focusing here on the outfit itself, it's fine. We got here a bit more of a pause. She got here a skateboard on her hand. Notice how I'm going very loosely here. Here we go. Now, I just missing here. This other that is going for the pocket. There we go. This is my sketch. Now again, pick up the pen and let's draw the outfit. She got this open shirt that is very, very loose. See the other side of it, W here, the other sleeve. Everything is very loose. Then we got this scrub top. We got here our hands. And skateboard. I'm not adding details to the skateboard here, not interested in that. But here, the other hand, that's in the pocket and then we got this very loose pens and same thing on the other side. Then we got these very big snickers and I'm forgetting here to rest over shirt. We can even add a bit of color to the shirt here and there we go there. Very simple. I can go in now and erase the first pencil ones I did at the beginning. Now let's step this up a bit. Let's loose the pencil and just use our pen. What can we draw next? I like that child with a puffy jacket and hood. Let's try that. It's very simple. So let's draw her here. We got the head circle. Now let's go and draw the hood. There we go. And we got here a little bit of a binning right and then we got a bit of a scarf appearing in there. There we go. Now we got a puff jacket that looks very, very warm. First arm here, always looking at my reference and see, and of course, this won't be perfect, all right. But I get the general idea of it and that's what we're trying to capture. Try here, the hand and we got here another hand right. Now I feel I don't really have lots of space for the legs here, but let's try. We got one leg going here in this direction, and then the other going this way. Here we go and we got here our shoes. The proportions are a bit weird here, maybe here I can make the checket a bit better because I I'm out of space here, but that's okay. There we go. Another one. I want to exaggerate here the puffy hood a bit more. There we go. Let's go for another one. That's how we go after another. Let's draw the other kids also with a puffy suit. We got here a bit of a pini situation. Try to do this with as few strokes as possible. Focus on the movement. Of the clothes in this case, we can barely see the other shoe because there's some snow right and he's holding here this shovel. So let's draw this well very quickly and there we go. Let's do another. I really like this lady here. I'm going to draw another page because I really like this lady with another puffy jacket, very big winter jacket. Go and now we got her face can barely see her face, and then we got here all the hair appearing. I really like that. Then we got her legs that end up being very contrasting with the rest of the drawing wearing some snickers. There we go. Next one. Let's draw the kid with a red hat because I think she looks very cute. Going to try to make it smallish because I'm running out of space here. There we go. Now maybe just two more to fill out this white space here around this area. Let's see, let's see. I'm feeling like drawing hats today. Let's draw that guy with the black hat. Can't really see the rest of his legs, so we don't know what he's wearing and another one, perhaps the lady with other heat from the back, just trying to follow the general direction of the clothes here. Right now we got here the skirts going this way, mostly. There we go. Our first challenge here, just drawing some outfits, having some fun. We start with a pencil and then we stop worrying about the pencils and the lines and just go in and draw whatever we see. This is it for now. Don't forget to download the reference board, take your time. You can draw other images than the one that I drew here. And just have some fun and don't worry about perfection. This is okay spread. These are just sketches, do those things that you do very, very quickly. Take your time and I will see you in the next video. 4. Day 2 - Quiet Contemplation - Small Routines: Hello, and welcome back. This is day two of sketching people. Today we have quiet contemplation and drawing small routine. I have here once again my reference board. This is going to be a bit more complex because we have different poses here. So sometimes it can difficult things a bit more, but it's always good for us to leave our comfort zone and to draw different things, so we start getting used to it. Once again, this is just sketching, so it's perfectly fine if it's not good. That's the idea. It's for you to just explore and try new things. Even if your sketches are not as good as you want them to be, that's fine. You'll get better with time, just keep sketching. All right. This is my day one, and I'm going to open a new spread, and let's start with the pencil again. If you want, we can make a few more drawings, starting with pencil. So let me see here. What do I want to start with? All right. I was going to start with something a bit more complex, but let's start with the girl in the yellow raincoat. It's a fairly simple pose and there's not a lot of details there. Let's start with that to warm up a bit. I'm just going and finding here some shapes. Since we don't really see a lot of her body, I'm just following the shapes of the clothing. There we go. I will leave it like this for now. Now let's pick up the pen and add some more details. Here some hair, and then we got our hood appearing. Now we got here a purse that we go. Let's draw here this see here a bit of a hand right and here this arm is bent a bit and now we got here our raincoat, the rest of it, and now we got the legs. It's very cute yellow boots and same thing on the other side, although the foot is in another position. There we go. Very simple. This is probably the simplest pose we have here. This one with a phone actually is also quite fun, so maybe we can try that. I'll try to. I'm going to zoom in this a bit so I can see better. But yes, we got here, let's go with a pencil again and I forgot, find our shapes. Just she's using her phone, the hands are here, and then we got here the arms. Can maybe go a bit more to the side and we got here a bag. This is what we got so far. All right, and then got the bag and then we got here, one leg going here and the other going straight down. And then this one goes in front right. See how sketchy I'm being here with my lines. There's absolutely no perfection here. We're just looking for the movement. This is it there. Now let's pick up the pen again and draw our girl here. She has a mask. I want to draw it and she also got here the glasses, and then we got here not stripes, the handles of the bag, and we got a t shirt, a very baggy t shirt we even see here bends on the t shirt right, the arms and the hands holding her phone. See how my hands are very, very simple drawn. I don't really have a whole lot of detail there. I'm just going for the main aspects. There we go, and then we have a bit of the shirt showing here below, and now the pants, they are very, very loose. There's pockets there. All right. Then we got here the shoes same thing on the other side, there we go. Simple and easy. Let's see what else to draw. I really like this pose here, the lady in the forest. I really like it. So, let's keep our pencil here. Another one with a pencil. We got here the head. This is a bit like just drawing. If you've seen my gesto drawing classes before, you are already familiar with this, but this is basically it. I got here the jacket, the arm. Notice how I'm going messier, messier as I go with these drawings, just capturing the movement in general. This is a very messy sketch, but then I will go in with my here and I will clean things up a bit. Then we go. We got here, check it, here another bit of check it and we got here the sleeves. I don't really have the space for the rest of this arm, but that's fine. Now here, we have the sleeves quite large. I would like to be messy with my drawings here, with my sketches. Co, then the leg right here and we share the other foot as well. Let's erase some of the lines that we have here already. One page is filled. Are we ready to just use our pen now and not have the pencil helping us? Let's see. I'm going to draw this young person. I'm not sure if it's a man or a woman and it doesn't really matter, but they are sitting here in a wall, Let's draw that. All right, starting here with head and then we got this shape here, all right. Get here big paring, and then we got the legs. Then we go messy messy messy, now the other leg and we got here a bit of the other.G here some areas a bit wrong. But that's right. We got what we needed. Let's see next text. This girl with a hat. I really like it has some sunglasses and her hand. One of her hands is in her face. I'm going to draw the hand right away, and then we got here jacket and you saw arm going this way, here a bit of the backpack. Some folds of the shirt here, folds. That's the word I was looking for. Now we got here her backpack. All right. Now we got her legs. Pattern on her flannel and this is it. See, they're all very messy, but that's what I like about them. I think I'm going to stop here because I don't really like the spaces. I feel like I don't have enough space here, but I like how messy they all are because this is just me looking at something and trying to draw what I see as fast as possible with not a lot of detail. And I really like making these very messy sketches because I feel you can still tell what's happening them in there. It's very natural. You can tell that it's not something that I've taken a long time to do and it makes the goal here is not for you to draw a good drawing, it's for you to get comfortable in putting something on paper. In both of these so far, there's not really any perfect drawing here. Lots of them actually have some mistakes, obviously. And I could always just pick one of these and refine them and fix the mistakes that I might have on them. But this is the goal is just to be comfortable with making those mistakes and being able to put something very quickly on paper and you feel there's some awkward blank spaces there, you can also decorate your pages. I like to go in and draw some stars here and there, just fill in these awkward spaces. Again, I don't draw this super detailed and super good. They just sketch. Stars, sketchy stars, some doodles here and there, a fun way to practice other things in your sketchbook as well some lettering, for example, adding some doodles to it. Your sketchbook is a place for you to have fun, have fun with it. This is it for now. Take your time. Don't forget to complete your assignment for day two, fill out a page or spread of your sketchbook and I will see you in the next video. 5. Day 3 - Bring Some Energy In - People Moving: Hello, and welcome back. This is the tree of sketching people. Today, I feel it's a harder day because we're going to draw people in movement. I do understand that can be a bit more difficult and a bit more overwhelming. Drawing people in movement is always a bit hard. I think sometimes it can be hard just drawing people that are just standing and doing small tasks. But drawing people in movement is a whole level. Usually when we get to the final stage of something, it's customary to give it all right. But for this one, I think we should do the opposite. The things even easier and just relax and win down from this whole activity. For this time, we can do fewer poses. I would say perhaps three or four we can use to help us out the pencil for the first few poses the last one, we do it with pen only. What do you think? I think that's a good compromise, and this might help us relax a bit more and make us feel a bit more confident and less scared of filling out the s pages. Let's start. I'll keep my reference part somewhere here, but I'm thinking of starting with this girl with a pink jacket. It's a fairly simple pose, so it's just a girl walking. She's very clearly posing for that. I think we can start with it, so start with the heads, shapes only. We can be very loose with this. We have here a back. Now as for the legs, something like this. Our shoes there and there we go. Very, very simple. I'm not sure how I'll fit here another pose really, but we'll figure that out later. Right now, I'm going to pick my pen and add a few more details. As you can see, I'm being very loose with this quick strokes. I feel like making us do these very quick lines. We don't really give ourselves time to be scared about how the sketches will look like. I also makes our drawings more dynamic, there we go. This is it. Now, next one, can we fit something? What could we fit there? I fear that the space is a bit too small. We can try this guy on his bike, perhaps. I think if we start this way, focusing on shapes first. I'm not really very good at drawing bikes. So the goal here isn't to be super good at riding a bicycle, so I think we are okay with that. Now we have this one here and this one here, I'm just getting here the bike, loosely. Yeah, I think we can do something like this. Obviously, very messy, but got it. Now we're going to add the rest of the details just like we did before with all other sketches. This should be lower too late. There we go. This thing should be somewhere here and not here. But this is what happens in sketches and that's fine. It's part especially when you're drawing things that you're not really used to get here the wheel and now we got here the other leg's going something like this. There we go. We also got this arm pecking out from here. The hand is holding the hand wel there. I got here, something like this. Then we go down and we have here. The other wheel. I want to show you how to draw people and here we are drawing bicycles instead. But there we go. This is it. One more with a pencil. Let's see. Let's see. Let's try this guy jumping here. I like that one. We got the head. I like to start with the head, but it's one of those things that it depends from person to person. Yeah. I got a backpack appearing here, right? I just noticed that I got a whole lot of backpacks here, there we go. This should be a bit then mess. Still, let's redo that. Okay. Like this better. See very messy lines here and let's do this. I'm exaggerating here this shirt a little bit. Our backpack that we see here appearing, there we go. Now we got the shorts, one leg, and let's go for the other and the shorts going somewhere like this. All right. One more done. Now, we are missing one. Let me just erase some of the lines here. They're safe to erase already, let's do something. This guy with the tennis, can't remember how he said it, but playing tennis. Starting with the head. He has this very awkward pose that I think is really, really fun. Was saying tennis, but this is not tennis. I think this is paddle or something like that. I think the hardest part of this pose is done and we got here this shirt. There we go, and now the legs. Oops, I ran out of paper here, but that's fine. I think I made this shirt area a bit too long, but that's okay. We learn, that's way too long. It should have been a bit more squished. But that's fine because it's a sketch and I did learn something with it. I could just repeat the pose again and see if I can do it better if I learn something with it. But I'm going to leave it this way for now because I want you guys to see that some mistakes and failure here and there is perfectly fine. This is a space for it. As we talked about so many times before, let's say this is movement. I can't. And now we can just decorate the page once again a little bit. I really like decorating my page. As you can see, I do this, very quickly, just short strokes. But this is three days of sketching and we draw people in different situations. I hope you enjoyed it and once again, don't forget to download the reference board so you can use it. You can use other references if you want. Just take your time. If you need to take longer for this day, feel free to do so. I know it can be hard. I just have fun and don't forget to do your assignment and to post it and I will see you in the next video. 6. Conclusion - Before You Go!: Hello, artist and welcome back. You just finished this class, three full days of sketching people in different situations and hopefully you'll feel more comfortable with drawing people as well as drawing in your sketchbook without being afraid of making a mess. As you can see, it's fine. It's your sketchbook and the goal of it is for you to experiment and practice your drawings. It doesn't need to be perfect. You just need to have some fun in your practices. Congratulations on finishing this class. Yourself a pad in the back and don't forget to post your assignment so I can see it and give you any feedback you might want. I always love seeing all your projects and the drawings you come up with. It's always really, really fun to see. If you can spare the time, do consider leaving a review for this class, so other people like you can watch it as well, and so I can keep on making these classes for you. Once again, thank you so much for watching. I hope you enjoyed it. Don't forget to check out my other classes and I will see you next time. Don't forget, keep on drawing. Bye.
