1. Welcome to the Class: When it comes to painting landscapes, watercolors can be a great medium texto. In this class, we are going to paint forest landscapes using easy and simple techniques to paint. Everybody. Myself RudwikPatel. I'm a self taught independent artist and an interior designer by profession. I personally love to explore different art forms and styles and not stick to one particular thing. So if you are joining me, you'll find a variety of classes that I create. You're going to understand all the art supplies in detail. We're going to talk about the brushes and the colors that you will need. Before we start with the paintings, we are going to have a simple practice session which will enhance your confidence and painting skills. Using a wet on wet technique, we are going to paint these beautiful pine trees combining together to form a nice forest landscape. Then we are going to add details to the entire pine tree. There are going to be different elements like some birds in the sky area, a beautiful mountain, which helps to enhance the entire forest landscape. The best part about the class is that it will help you to explore watercolors in detail. It will improvise your painting skills and enhance your confidence with watercolors. No need to worry about the output, enjoy the process of creating. The class is absolutely suited for beginners and also intermediate and advanced level artists can try it. So without any delay, grab your art supplies and join me on this creative journey. 2. Art Supplies: Hey, everybody. Now let us talk about all the art supplies that you will need for the entire class. So as you can observe, I have placed all my art supplies in a systematic manner. Let me give you the details one by one. So let us start with the sketchbook first. So you can observe that it is a very simple, small sketchbook. The size is B six, basically, but no need to worry about the size. You have to take care about the GSM. So it is 150 GSM. You can go for 200 or 300 GSM watercolor paper as well. And no need to worry about the size of the paper. You can use any size paper that works for you. So here you can observe one of our class projects that we are going to create. Here is another one. So this is how when you create a project on a simple sketchbook, I hope that you got an exact idea of the paper that we are going to use. The best part about a sketchbook is that all your paintings are kept together and you do not have to worry about losing any painting. Now the next art supply is a simple black pen that we are going to use to create some little birds in the entire painting. You can observe it is having a very thin tip. You can use any black pen that works for you. Make sure that it is a ballpen and not a gelpin. Then let us talk about the most important art supply, which is the brushes that we are going to use. So we're going to have four brushes, basically, two are quill brushes of size four and two. Then the remaining two are round brushes of size zero and four. So these two brushes are basically detailing brushes. Now, let us move towards the next art supply, which is a simple tissue paper. You can already observe some colors in it. So it is good to keep a tissue paper nearby whenever you're working with watercolors to remove excess amount of water or color from your brush. Then I have a simple glass container that you can observe is having some colored water in it. Of course, we're going to take some clear water when we start painting. Then I'm using a simple transparent color palette. You can observe I'm already having some colors in it. You can observe that it is having enough space for mixing, so you can use any good color palette which is having enough space to take out multiple colors in it so that you can mix them well. Then let us talk about the most important art supply, which is the watercolors, basically. So there are five basic colors, black, sap green, dark green, light brown, and dark brown. These are five basic colors that we are going to use to create five beautiful forest paintings. So I hope that you got an exact idea of all the art supplies that you will need for the entire class. Now let us move towards the next part. 3. Lets Practice: Hey, everybody. Now let us practice all the elements that we are going to use to create all the three paintings. If you can observe one of our paintings over here, there are these beautiful pine trees combining together to form a beautiful, dense forest. Now let us understand the technique of creating this beautiful blurry effect using watercolors. No need to worry at all. Observe these steps carefully. I'll be using my quill brush of size four. Now simply apply a thin coat of water on the paper. No need to hurry at all. Apply the coat in a nice way so that water is completely absorbed by the paper. Now the paper is still wet. You have to observe in the color palette. I'm mixing some dark green and sap green together. Mix the colors well. You can also add a little bit of brown in it. Now simply observe the way I'm using my quill brush. You just have to move it in this vertical manner. You can move your brush in the dry area as well where we have not applied the water. You'll observe that the color will automatically spread where we applied a nice thin coat of water. This is basically known as a wet on wet technique in which you apply a thin coat of water initially and the color. Now, no need to worry about perfection. It's a very natural way of applying watercolors, so it is absolutely fine if there is a variation between your painting and mine. I'll be using my quill brush of size, too. Take a little bit of highly saturated color, try to have less amount of water this time, and apply it on the topmost portion. So right now, we have used green and sap green together to form a nice forest element. Now, apart from that, what we are going to do is we're going to take our round brush of size zero, take some good amount of green and sap green again together, try to have very less amount of water in it, and we are just going to enhance the pine trees. So you just have to take the tip of the green color. And in a very natural way, you just have to start creating these little strokes on the topmost portion. Now as you move towards the bottom area, you can increase the size of the strokes that you're making. So this basically helps you to make the pine tree in a little bit detail. You're not going to paint all the pine trees just certain elements to enhance, and that is how it comes in an abstract manner. Now, you can add these little strokes around as well to make it look a little bit more abstract. So on the right hand side, I find this little pine tree, which I'm creating right now. You can observe the way I'm moving my round brush as well. No need to hurry at all. Take your time and paint carefully. Now, let us add a little bit of brown element as well. So again, I'll take my quill brush of size two. Take a little bit of light brown and dark brown together. You can add a little bit of green in it as well. Initially, you can apply a nice thin coat of water in between, and then you should take color. Now simply apply it on the topmost portion, and you'll observe that the color will automatically spread. Now you don't have to worry about painting it in the exact same way. Your composition of the entire painting might be a little bit different than of mine, and it is completely fine. It's an abstract form of painting, so no need to worry about that. Now you can observe a beautiful variation between the green and brown color, and it is also combining together to form a beautiful landscape for a forest. So again, to enhance the entire pine tree, you can take your round brush of size zero, take some highly saturated color, apply it on the topmost portion, create a simple vertical line, and then start adding these little lines. So I hope that you got an exact idea of how you have to paint these little pine trees in the entire forest painting. It is a very simple and easy process, and you'll definitely enjoy it a lot. You can create a simple sun in the sky area by painting a small circular shape. Now observe carefully the way I'm using my black pen to create these little birds in the sky area. You just have to create these little shapes and just leave the stroke of the pen. So these are the basic elements for the first painting. Now let us move towards the next painting where we have this beautiful mountain area that you can observe. Let me take you a little bit closer. So it is having a beautiful light gray shade with a little bit of texture on it and some little lines to enhance and make it in detail. So let me teach you how you can create this beautiful mountain, and it is a very simple and easy painting technique. In another painting, we have a beautiful green mountain that you can observe. These steps are absolutely same, so you can just follow them and observe them carefully. So let me take you towards the practice sheet again. So in the bottom portion, we have some space left. So I'll take my quill brush of size four again, apply a nice thin coat of water on the bottom portion of the paper. No need to hurry at all and make sure that you apply a nice even coat of water. Now using the same brush, we're going to take a nice little saturated solid black color. Try to have very less amount of color and more water in your brush. Now simply use the tip of your quill brush and apply it on the dry area where we have not applied the water. Simply move it towards the water area where we applied a thin coat of water, and you'll observe that the color will automatically spread in a nice gradient manner. So there is a saturated color on the topmost portion and a light saturated color on the bottom part. Now, take the green and dark green color together, which is basically sap green and green and mix it well. Use the quill brush of size two and apply it in this vertical manner to form these beautiful trees around the mountain. Now, these steps to create these little pine trees are absolutely same that we did on the topmost portion as well. You just have to add this beautiful effect using the green color since the paper was completely wet initially. Now I'm going to use my round brush of size zero, take a little bit of light saturated black color, try to have more water and less color in it, and just create these little lines on one side of the mountain to create some nice texture and details in the entire mountain. Try to apply very less pressure on your hand and use the tip of your round brush. Now using the same round brush, let us enhance the details in the pine trees. Take some dark green and sap green together, create a simple vertical line. Then add these little lines starting from the topmost portion, slowly moving towards the bottom area. Try to increase the size of the strokes as you move towards the bottom part. And this is how you can paint a beautiful pine tree in an abstract manner. It's a very simple and easy step, and you'll definitely enjoy it a lot. You can observe the way we have composed the entire mountain and the trees together. Now using a black pen, you just have to create these little birds in the sky area. Using the pen only, you can create a sun in the sky area as well. You can add these little dots and texture to create it in an abstract manner. So these are all the elements that you need to know. It's like a warm up exercise before you start with the class projects. This practice sheet will help you a lot to develop confidence while painting, and the chances of making mistakes will be very less. I hope that you got an exact idea of all the elements and the painting techniques that we are going to use. Now, let us move towards the next part. 4. Painting 1 - Dense Pine Trees: Hey, everybody. You're most welcome to the first painting, which I have named as dense pine trees. You can observe that I'm ready with all my art supplies nearby. Let us start with the first step. I'm taking my quill brush of size four, take some good amount of water in it, and apply a nice even coat of water on the entire paper. No need to hurry at all. Take your time and apply any wind coat of water. You'll observe that your paper will get a little bit folded on the bottom portion, but it is completely fine. Now, let's start with the first step of applying the colors. I'm going to mix some green and sag green together. Make a good combination of water and color together. You can also add a little bit of brown in it. Make sure that your brush is having good amount of water in it as well. Now simply start applying these vertical strokes. You can observe the way I'm moving my brush, and slowly you can move towards the left hand portion initially. You can also apply it on the right hand side, as well. You'll observe that the color will automatically spread. So I'm starting with the first layer of pine trees that is on the topmost portion. You can take some good amount of color again in case you find that your color is getting finished from the brush. I'll just take some more amount of green and sap green together, apply it on the bottom portion, leave some space from the first layer that we applied. Now, you can take some brown in your same quill brush and apply it in this left hand portion, leaving some space in between. Now slowly, I'll just add these little strokes on the bottom portion as well. The paper is still wet. That's why the color is spreading. So you have to keep a little bit of speed while you're applying the color. I'll simply clean my quilbush, take some water, apply it on the bottom portion, and you'll observe a beautiful spread of the color. So it basically creates a nice gradient effect. So this is basically known as a wet on wet technique in which we apply a thin coat of water initially, and then the color so that the color spreads in a natural and organic manner. Now, let us add the details once we are done with the first layer. Let your painting dry for a little while. Now I'll take some green and sap green together in my round brush of size four. In case you want to use a size zero round brush, that is also absolutely fine. Now, I'll just enhance the entire pine tree. The steps are very easy and simple. You just have to create a simple vertical line. Now start adding these little strokes around the vertical line. And as you move towards the bottom portion, just simply increase the size of the strokes that you're making. And this is how we just complete the entire shape of the pine tree. You will definitely enjoy the entire process of painting the pine trees. You can observe the way I'm moving my brush, and whenever you're working with a detailing brush, which is basically a round brush, always try to keep your hand very much loose and free. No need to make it stiff, so that you can move your hand in a very comfortable manner. Now, similarly, wherever we have applied this first layer of color where it is in a very abstract manner, we are just simply going to enhance the pine trees by adding the details on the topmost portion. The remaining bottom portion is going to be this blurry effect so that it creates a nice dense effect in the entire forest. Now, similarly, you just have to observe these steps carefully. You have to observe the way I'm moving my brush, and you can enhance the details accordingly. No need to hurry at all. Try to paint it in a very slow and steady manner, and no need to worry about painting it in the exact same way. You're free to explore and experiment and create your own composition as well. So you can observe the way we have added some details in the pine trees on the left hand portion. Similarly, we have this little shade of brown here. So I'll take some brown in my detailing brush, which is basically a round brush of size zero only. Start adding these little strokes, and as you move towards the bottom area, you can simply increase the size of the strokes that you're making. Now, similarly, we have this beautiful brown color on the bottom portion as well. So to enhance the pine trees in this particular area, I'm just creating a huge vertical line, connecting it with this blurry shade on the bottom portion. I'm slowly adding these little strokes, and I'm just combining it together. In case you want to make it a little bit more blur, you can just add a little bit of water in it. You can also observe a beautiful contrast between the solid brown color and the background green color. It creates a beautiful contrast with the background. Now let us add some minute details using our black pen. So we are just creating these little shapes on the bottom portion. There is no specific way of applying it. You can just randomly add these little circular shape, having variation in the size. You are basically adding these little shapes to create some nice, abstract effect, and to make our painting look a little bit more attractive and aesthetic. In case you want to do this particular element using a round brush of size zero, that is also completely fine, but it would be more comfortable if you use a black pen. Now let us draw some little birds in the sky area to enhance the entire painting. You just have to create these little V shapes, having variation in the size and leave the entire stroke. It is a very simple and easy step to draw the birds in case you want to draw it on a rough scrape of paper initially and then come towards your final painting. It is completely fine. This will help you a lot to develop confidence, and the chances of making mistakes will be very less. So I'm adding these little birds on the topmost portion of the sky area as well. You can add them according to your convenience wherever you want to. It is absolutely fine. I'll just take a little bit of solid black color, and I'm going to add the color palette of the entire painting on the topmost portion. So this is basically a little element to enhance the entire painting. It is not at all compulsory for you to do this particular step. I'm just doing it to make the entire painting look a little bit more attractive. Also, these are all the colors that we have used to complete the entire painting. So the first one is solid black followed by dark green. Then we have Sab green, light brown and dark brown. You just have to take the colors, create its circular shapes on the topmost portion. And in case you do not want to add the color palette on the topmost portion, it is completely fine. So we are done with the color palette. Now I'll just take a little bit of dark green in my round brush of size zero and simply create a circular shape on the topmost portion of the pine trees. So it's basically a sun that we have painted. No need to worry at all. Take your time and try to paint a nice circular shape. So we are done with the entire painting. You can observe the color palette on the topmost portion. These are all the colors that we used to complete the entire painting. Let me take you a little bit closer so that you can observe all the details carefully. You can observe the way we have combined these minimal elements together to form a beautiful, dense forest landscape using easy and simple painting techniques. Now, no need to worry about the output or painting it in the exact same way. You're free to explore and experiment. You can create your own composition as well. Now let us move towards the next painting. 5. Painting 2 - Green Mountains: Hey, everybody. You're most welcome to my second painting, which I have named as Green Mountains. Apart from the first painting, we have an additional element in this painting, which is a beautiful green mountain. So I'll be using my quill brush of size four, take some good amount of water in it, and this time, we are not applying it on the entire paper. Just create an even coat of water on three fourth portion of the entire paper. No need to hurry at all, try to apply an oven coat. I'll be using my quill brush of size too. Mix a little bit of sap green and dark green together. You can add a little bit of brown in it as well. Observe it carefully in the color palette. Now use the tip of your quill brush. Start applying it on the dry area first. Slowly move towards the wet area. You'll observe that the color will automatically spread on the bottom portion. Then you can reapply some strokes on the surface of the mountain, which will give it a nice texture. The paper is wet on the bottom portion, so the color will automatically spread in that particular area. And this is basically known as a wet on wet technique. So I hope that you got an exact idea of how to paint a beautiful mountain. It's a very simple and easy painting technique that you can use. Now, once we are done with the mountain, I'll reapply some water in the bottom portion. Make sure that you do not move water in the mountain this time. Now I'll be taking my quill brush of size too. Take some good amount of dark green and sap green together, add a little bit of brown in it if you want to. Try to have good amount of water and color in your brush. Now start from the left hand side and slowly move your brush in this vertical manner. You'll observe that the color will automatically spread on the bottom portion. You can take some more color if you want to. So we are basically painting the pine trees in an abstract manner. We'll give the details later. I'll take a little bit of brown as well, and you can reapply these vertical strokes. No need to hurry at all, and you can observe that I have left some white space in between the mountains and the pine trees. It basically creates a nice foggy element to the entire forest. Now, similarly, I'll be adding the vertical strokes in the bottom portion, leaving some white space in between again. There is a nice combination of brown and green color together if you observe carefully, which basically creates some nice depth in the entire forest. So this is basically the first layer in an abstract manner. Now let us add some details so that we get an exact idea of the pine trees. So I'll be taking my round brush of size zero. Take some good amount of dark green and sabgreen together in it. Now, this time, try to have less amount of water and more color in it. Simply create a vertical line, start adding these little strokes from the topmost portion. And as you move towards the bottom area, simply increase the size of the strokes that you're making. This is one of the easiest technique to paint a pine tree. So we have the base layer in an abstract manner where we have completely spread the color, which is basically the watercolor, and then we are adding the details in this highly saturated color on the topmost portion only. So again, I'll just create a little vertical line and add these little strokes. No need to hurry at all. Just enjoy the process of painting these little pine trees. You'll definitely get a very good sense of satisfaction while you're painting the pine trees. Also, no need to worry about perfection or painting it in the exact same way. You're free to explore and experiment. In fact, you can create your own composition of the entire painting as well. So we have painted the pine trees in detail on the topmost layer. Now I'm just increasing the saturation of the color by adding a little bit of solid brown in the mixture of green and sabgreen. You can add the details in the pine trees present in the center portion. Also, in case you're not that much confident enough to paint the pine trees directly towards your final painting. What you can do is you can practice it on a rough scrape of paper initially, and then you can come towards your final painting. This will help you a lot to develop confidence while painting, and the chances of making mistakes will be very less. Also, one thing that you can keep in mind whenever you're working with a detailing brush, which is basically a round brush of size zero or size four, you always try to keep your hand very much loose and free. No need to make it very much stiff. This will help you to paint in a very comfortable manner. Now, in my round brush, I'm taking a less saturated green color. Try to have more water and less pigment of the color. Now simply add these little thin strokes on the mountain area. I'm trying to create these little thin lines which are moving towards the left hand portion. You can also create these little circular shapes, having variation in the size. No need to hurry at all. Do this particular step in a very slow and steady manner. Also try to keep your hand very much loose and free because we want to get a nice thin stroke on the mountain area. Once we are done adding these little thin strokes using the same round brush, we can add little details in the entire landscape that we have painted on the bottom portion as well. Again, it's a very simple and easy process. You just have to create these little shapes, having variation in the size. You can do it randomly. It is absolutely fine. You can also use a simple black pen to add these little circular shapes. Now using the same black pen, we are going to create some little birds in the sky area, which will enhance the entire painting. So it's a very easy and simple step. You just have to create these little V shape and try to create a nice cluster of birds together, having variation in the size. Just simply leave two strokes from one single point, and you can create the cluster of birds wherever you want to. It is absolutely fine. So I've added the color palette on the topmost portion. So these are all the five colors that we have used to create the entire forest painting. Let me take you a little bit closer so that you can observe all the details carefully. This is the second painting that we have created using easy and simple painting techniques. I hope that you enjoyed this particular painting and got to learn something new. No need to worry about the output. You can create your own composition as well. Now let us move towards the next painting. 6. Painting 3 - Dense Forest: Everybody, you're most welcome to the third painting, which is a dense forest, and it is the last class project. So I'll be using my quill brush of size two this time. Take some good amount of water, try to apply a nice even coat of water on the bottom portion of the paper, leave some dry space on the topmost portion. Now using the same quill brush of size two, I'll take a less saturated black color, and you can also mix it with a little bit of brown. Try to have more water and less amount of color. Now apply these strokes initially on the dry area and slowly move your brush into the wet area that we applied initially. You'll observe that the color will automatically spread. Now, you just have to apply some random strokes on the bottom portion as well. Now, if you observe carefully, we got a nice saturated color on the topmost portion where there was a dry area, and as the color moves towards the bottom part, it slowly decreases the saturation. Now we have created a beautiful, nice, gray mountain. Now, in order to paint the pine trees, I'll take my quill brush of size to again, reapply a nice coat of water on the bottom portion of the mountain. So the paper is re wet again. I'll take a little bit of green and sa green together, add a little bit of brown in it, try to have a good composition of water and color together. Now simply start applying the color. From the left hand side, so no need to hurry at all. Simply move your brush in this vertical manner, and you'll observe that the color will automatically spread. Now, this is basically known as a wet on wet technique in which we apply a thin coat of water initially and then color. You can take some good amount of color again in case you find that your color is getting finished from the brush. Slowly, I'll move towards the right hand side, creating these vertical strokes together. You can take a little bit of solid brown color and add a nice color patch in the center portion as well. You can observe that we have kept a little bit of space in between the mountain and the trees so that it creates a nice mist effect. You can apply some color on the bottom portion as well, since the paper is still wet. In case you want to add a little bit of saturated color in the green area, you can reapply the strokes in this vertical manner, as well. No need to hurry at all and no need to worry about painting it in the exact same way. It's an abstract form of painting, so it is completely fine. You can create your own composition as well. I'll just add a little bit of green color in the bottom portion to complete the entire forest area. So wherever you want to spread your color in a nice natural way, just apply a thin coat of water initially and then color. So we are done adding the beautiful patch of forest area in an abstract manner. Now let us add some details in the entire forest area. Let the painting dry for a while. I'll take my round rush of size zero. Take some good amount of color from the color palette, try to have less amount of water and more color. Now observe it in detail. I have just created a simple vertical line. Now slowly add these little strokes. Start from the topmost portion, and as you move towards the bottom area, just simply increase the size of the strokes that you're making. No need to hurry at all. It's a very satisfying process of painting the pine trees using very easy painting techniques. Now, similarly, I'll be painting the different pine trees around. You just have to create a simple vertical line followed by these little strokes. In case you're not that much confident enough to paint the pine trees directly towards your final painting, what you can do is you can practice it on a rough scrape of paper initially, and then you can come towards your final painting. This will help you a lot to develop confidence while painting, and the chances of making mistakes will be very less. One thing that you can keep in mind while working with a round brush is that try to keep your hand very much loose and free. No need to make it very much stiff. Whenever we are painting in a very smaller portion or we are trying to create thin and little strokes, your hand should be in a very comfortable manner. So you can observe the way we have painted the pine trees which are very much brown in color. Now, similarly, we are going to enhance the pine trees, which is having this beautiful green color as well. So the steps are absolutely same. Just observe them carefully and no need to hurry, paint it with a lot of patience. Now, as you can observe that we have added details to most of the pine trees in the bottom area and the topmost portion. Apart from this, we are having few more pine trees to add details to. If you observe carefully, there is a beautiful gradient effect that is forming in the entire forest. So we have a beautiful dark green colour on the topmost portion of the pine tree. And as you observe on the bottom portion, there is a nice blurry effect. So it is being created due to the wet on wet technique that we used. Similarly, you can observe this particular effect in the brown portion as well. Now, using the same detailing brush, let us add some details in the mountains. I'll use my round brush of size zero again, take a less saturated, solid black colour in it. Try to have very less amount of color and more water, mix them well, and try to create these little strokes coming towards the left hand portion. No need to hurry at all. And when you're working with these little thin strokes, try to apply very less pressure on your brush. Use the tip of your round brush. And make sure that your hand is very much loose and free. You just have to create these lines in a very random manner, so no need to worry about perfection or painting it in the exact same way. Now, as you add these little thin strokes, it makes the mountains look very much in detail. No need to hurry at all. Try to paint with a lot of patience. I'll use my black pen to add a little bit of details in the landscape area as well. Just create these little circular shapes, having variation in the size. You can randomly apply it. It is absolutely fine. No need to draw it in the exact same way. Now let us draw some birds in the sky area to enhance the entire painting. You just have to create these V shapes using a simple black pen. Now, I'm just creating a nice cluster of birds having variation in size. You can practice the cluster of birds on a rough scrape of paper also and then come towards your final painting. You can decide the position of the birds according to your convenience as well. It is absolutely fine. So I'll add few birds in the landscape area as well. And we're almost done with the entire painting. So you can observe the way we have created these birds in the sky area. We are done with the entire painting, and I have added the color palette on the topmost portion. These are all the colors that we have used for the entire painting. Let me take you a little bit closer so that you can observe all the details carefully. Using minimal elements and easy painting techniques, we have completed the third painting as well. I hope that you enjoyed the entire process. No need to worry about the output, enjoy the process of painting. You're free to explore and experiment. This is the last class project. Now let us move towards the class conclusion. You. 7. Class Conclusion: Hey, everybody. So you're most welcome to the class conclusion. I hope that you enjoyed the entire class and got to learn something new and creative. While I was creating this particular class, I made any number of mistakes, and that is something that I always tell my students never to be afraid of making mistakes. It is really great if you maintain an art journal to practice on a regular basis. This basically improvises your sketching, inking, and painting skills. I would be really excited to see all of your class projects into the project gallery, so do not forget to add them into the project gallery. It would be really great if you leave a review for the entire class, as it encourages me a lot and my class can reach many more students like you. At the end, I would like to say, keep learning, keep practicing. Thank you so much for joining the class and happy painting.
