About This Class

In this class, we’ll create a simple and beautiful holiday card using Procreate, which can be used in multiple ways:

  • As a greeting card
  • As a gift tag
  • Printed artwork to gift
  • Digital greeting card

This class will be a step by step tutorial: I’ll guide you through each step, from sketching to final touches. We'll draw 3 different elements to decorate our card with. I'll show you how I created mine, but feel free to give it your own personal twist!.

We’ll use Procreate’s built-in brushes (no need for additional downloads). The brushes we will use are: Shale Brush, which you can find in calligraphy and HB pencil, found in sketching. The color swatch palette is available in the Resources section for you to download or use.

1. Canvas Size, Brushes And Color Palette: To this class, we will be creating a simple and beautiful holiday card using Procreate. Your design will count as a class project, so make sure to share it. You can use a letter size canvas or an A four depending on your region. This size folds nicely into a card. Go to resources and find the color palette. Then go to your files, tap on it, and it sure appear right there in your palettes. We will use Procreate build on brushes. You can find the gB pencil in sketching and shell brush in calligraphy. Now, for my card, this is the typeface I use. I share it in resources, but you can use your own handwriting as well. Okay, let's begin. 2. Poinsettia : We're going to start by drawing a circle. It doesn't have to be perfect. You can let Procreate correct it if you want, and we are going to resize it a little because we're going to need a much bigger circle later on. Draw a little.in the center of your circle and then draw six lines like so. This will be our petals. Just make sure they are evenly distributed. Now, we're going to go to our layers and lower the opacity just enough so you can see it and create a new layer on top of fain. We are going to use the lines we created before as a reference so we can create our petals. They don't have to be perfect. Remember that nothing in nature is. So it's okay if your petals end up a little bit wonky. But of course, feel free to correct them if you wish to do so. And we're going to end up having something like this. Now swipe left and duplicate the layer. Now, we're going to resize that second layer, make sure that the centers align, and then we're going to move it a little bit, so the big petal sits right in between the two little petals. Our next step is really important. We have to rename our layers to avoid confusion. I'm going to name the small circle as center and the bigger one as outer. Then we're going to create a new layer. I'm going to name it outer color or outer C. And lower the opacity of the outer layer just enough so you can see it, select this red color and pick shell brush. Now, shell brush offers a little bit of resistance when painting. And if this is something you don't like, let's fix that. So go to brush properties, tap on stabilization, and lower the amount as much as you like. You can later reset that if you wish. And now comes the fun part. We're just going to color in the petals that we created before. I like to trace over the shapes and then color everything in. Now, this brush is meant to look a little bit distressed. So there may be a few gaps in the color, and that's completely okay. I actually think that gibs are design, a lot of character. And I personally think that it makes the coloring process a lot of fun, as well. Okay? Our flower looks something like this, and now we're going to repeat the steps we've just done with the center layer. Create a new layer, and let's name it centers or center color. Lower the opacity of the center layer. Now let's pick this layer red color. And we're going to repeat the steps. We're going to create the shapes. Well, that's how I like to do it. And then we're going to color everything. Don't worry if we look a bit wonky or if they are not perfectly symmetrical. And we have something like this. Now go to your layers and make sure that center and outer layers are both visible. You can adjust opacities here if you want, but I personally like them with low opacities. Let's create a new layer, and we're going to name it in details. Let's pick this burgundy color, and let's pick HB pencil. Now, we're going to create a little dot right here in the center over flower, and we're going to outline just our first petal. For our second petal, we're going to replicate this curve right here. It's a curve that goes upwards. But as you can see for the third petal, this one goes inwards. So it will go like that, an inward and an outward petal. And we're going to end up with something like this. You can delete the little circle if you want, and then we're going to trace lines that go right through our petals. We're going to do the same for our outer flower or out petals. Then for our center petals, we're going to draw two lines like this. Just make sure they're just a pair of them because we don't want to create an overwhelming pattern. And we're going to draw this in all our center petals. We're going to repeat the process with the outer ones, but we're just going to draw one pair of lines. And we're going to end up with something like this. Now, create a new layer, and we're going to call it details too. I like to do this in case that I want to delete anything from our previous layer of details. Now, with the same burgundy color, we're going to shade a little bit of our petals, but only the ones that go outwards. And we're going to repeat with the outer petals. Now, you can also just create lines that go up and down, if you wish. I actually like how both look together. So I'm going to lower the opacity of the lines. I actually think that gives it a lot of dimension. I'm going to create a new layer and I'm going to call it details three. Then I'm going to pick this yellow color and HB pencil, and we're going to create little circles, make sure they're different in size. I think that gives a lot of character to the center over flower. I'm just going to trace the lines here in the middle so it doesn't look that empty in the middle. And this is our flower. To keep everything organized, we're going to create a new group. So select your layers and swipe right, create a new group, and we're going to name it pointsia. And we're done with our first element for our card. Let's create a new layer for our new element. 3. Leaves: Okay, let's make the second element for our card. In our new layer, we're going to create a little sketch using this blue color and the HB pencil. Draw a line that is slightly curve and then another one creating a V shape. Then we're going to create little leaves using this teardrop shape. The secret here is to create these shapes in different sizes. This will make it look more dynamic and interesting. We're going to make sure that both lines that we created before are covered in leaves. Like so. Let's create a new layer and lower the opacity of our sketch, and we're going to name the new layer color. Now we're going to select this lighter green and shell brush, and we're going to color our sketch just to make sure that you're coloring in the right layer. As we did previously, we're going to trace over our sketch, and then we're going to color everything. When I want my coloring to look a little bit more distressed, I like to lower the size of my brush, and if I want my color to look a little bit more even, I use a bigger sized brush, and it's going to look something like this. Now pick the burgundy color and create a new layer. We are going to name this one details. And then select HB pencil. Now we're just going to redraw the first lines that we drew, and then we're going to draw straight lines that go through the little leaps. I like to leave a little gap at the top of the leaf, so I don't go all the way through the leaf. Now we're gonna pick a red color, and we're gonna continue drawing with the HB pencil. And as we just before, we're gonna draw circles, and we're going to make sure that they are different size. Shellbush doesn't create nice circles, so that's why I'm using HB pencil first. But then we're going to use shell brush to car everything in. Now, you can pick this off white color and then create a new layer, and we're going to name it details two. We're going to use the HB pencil for this. Now, we're just going to create highlights by tilting your Apple pencil, or you can just create lines going up and down as we did before. Then we're going to create a new layer, and we're going to name it Details three. We're going to pick this darker green, and we're going to carry on working with a tree pencil, and we're just going to create lines up and down without lifting the pencil up. This is going to create a really nice but subtle shadowing in our leaves, and this is a final result. We are going to group our layers by swiping right, clicking on Group, and we're going to name this layer leaves. And this is our second element, and we're ready to work on our third. 4. Holly : Our third element is the easiest one. Pick HB pencil and draw straight line. Let's draw a wider petal like so. Then we're going to lower the opacity a little bit and create a new layer. Using the petal shape as a template, we're going to draw three little spikes that resemble mountains. Then swipe left and duplicate that layer. Now, tap on the arrow icon. So this menu pops up. Tap, flip horizontal and rearrange so the top and the bottom of both figures coincide. Create a new layer and name it color three and lower the opacity of your template. We're going to outline our figure as we did before, but now we are going to duplicate this layer and rearrange it as we did before. We're going to merge it, and now we're going to color everything in. And it's going to look something like this. Now, using the shill brush, draw a line across our leaf, and we're going to group our layers as we've done before, and we're going to name this one Hule. And this is it. Now we're ready to create our card design. 5. Putting Everything Together: Before we start, I highly suggest you to duplicate your file. We are going to flatten our groups, and I think it's important to have a backup just in case. Tap on the winged icon, then go to Canvas, select drawing guide, and then edit drawing guide. Now pick symmetry. This is where our card will be folded. Tap on layers. If one of the layers says assisted, tap on that layer and make sure the drawing assistant is off. Now, we're going to duplicate each one of the layers and we're going to create a new group. We're going to name it originals, and we're going to keep a copy of each element in this group. We are doing this because from now onwards, we can only size down our elements. Otherwise, they'll turn out really pixelated. Let's place our flour right in the middle. Then we're going to duplicate or holly leaves. Two or three will do. Move them under the flour layer. If you're having issues positioning your leaves, make sure that magnetics is not selected. I'm going to size them down. If you select the flower and the holly leaves layers, you can move them together. Now wrench icon, add and add text. I'm just going to write something real quick like happy holidays, and then I can play around with a text. Now select the little leaves and duplicate them. We are going to need one for each corner. So we're gonna flip them, duplicate them and place them right here in the corners. To avoid confusion, and in case you need to move any of these elements, we're gonna rename them. Personally, I went for right down, left up, and so on, but I highly recommend naming all of your layers. Now, we're going to create a new layer, and we're going to name it details. Select yellow and HB pencil. Create a new layer and draw little circles in places that you consider that looked quite empty. Then lower the opacity. We're going to draw some sparkles by drawing across and then drawing curved lines, and then we can color them in for a different sparkle. We're going to create a cross and then an X right in the middle. Draw a combination of both in the spaces where you drew the circles. And again, I recommend you to draw them in different sizes. Now, go to your palette and select one of the red colors that you've got and just draw a little dots. This will make the color palette look more cohesive. Delete the layer you created to map out the sparkles and create a new layer. I want to place my signature here. So I'm going to name the new layer heart because I'm going to draw a little heart. I'm going to just color it in and then I'm going to sign it. Now, when we fold our card, this is going to look upside down. So let's make sure to flip it in a way that it looks like this when our card is open. Make sure everything is aligned. And this is it. We're nearly over. You can print it out like that, or if you want, go to Layers background and tap on the off white color. And this is it. Your card is ready to be printed. Thank you for joining in this class. Please upload your card to the project gallery. Sees it?
