About This Class

Learn how to design a Wide Skyscraper Ad with Canva, a free software platform for designing expert looking graphics in a short amount of time!

Ads and affiliate links are one of the main income sources for websites and blogs, but people are becoming more aware of them and less likely to click through. That is the reason why it’s more important now than ever to make sure that you create stunning looking images for your ads. Your ad needs to have a great image, a compelling headline, and a catchy call to action so that people will click through and invest into what you are offering.

When you are finished, I encourage you to upload your image to this class for the rest of us to see. Getting feedback from other students is a great way to learn what looks good and what does not. It’s also very motivating to get your creations out there and share them with the world.

1. Introduction: in this lesson, we're going to create what Campbell calls a wide skyscraper. At. These are the long vertical adds that you would see on a blawg or any type of social media platform. They are great for getting any type of advertisements of your own products across. Or maybe if you have any type affiliate links that you would like to share first, I'll show you some great images of some ads that are commonly found on blog's and websites . After that, we'll jump right into camera and check out some of the templates and pre may layouts that they have for the wide skyscraper ads. I'll show you some of the tools and features of camera so that you can change out some of that information and create your own ad. Finally, will export the ad out, either as a low resolution J. P g file or ah, high resolution PNG file, depending on what type of Web hosting service that you're using or where you're displaying this ad. Finally, at the end of this course, I ask you to please upload your image to this course so that both me and other students can see what you're working on. It'll give us a chance to provide critiques and feedback on what you have created, and it's also motivating to just get your images out there in the world. So if you're ready to begin, let's go ahead and get started. 2. Examples of Wide Skyscraper Ads: Let's go ahead and look at some examples of some wide skyscraper ads. This is what camera considers to be the long vertical add that you would see on a website or BLAWG advertising a product or service. So if I go into Google here and I type in white skyscraper, add and then click on the images button, we can see some of these images, both from bloggers and websites and even someone's from campus site themselves. So this gives you a good visual representation of what these ads look like. And also you can see some of these images where they're actually showing you where that ad would be placed. So, for instance, you can see this long banner running down on the right hand side of this Web page right here. So this would be what's considered the wide skyscraper ad. Um, again, if I click on this little template, you can see that image. And then this is another good one. That kind of shows, Ah, bunch of different types of, um, advertisements. So we have square. We have buttons, vertical banner so you can see the regular skyscrapers a little thinner, and then the wide skyscraper just takes up a little more room on the horizontal axis, and then you can see some examples of some great different types of advertisements. Here's one for some different types of eyeglasses, and they've got a 40% off advertisement going on here and shows a good image of a good picture there. If we click right here, you can see some these air actually from the Campbell website. So it's some of their templates, and you can see different kinds basic. Some of Omar just showing you, Ah, the website and maybe tries to get you to click into AH website or maybe even a lead magnets, Um, And then you can also do specials or discounts or sales, or what have you. And then there's this one from the budget rental place that I think is really good. It shows three different types of skyscraper ads, and you can see one is a 10% off coupon. One is just kind of ah, basic ad showing the company and showing to book now and then. Another one is showing how much it is per week, so three different types of ad, but they do a good job of keeping their colors and their branding and their image all kind of similar. So they have the orange buttons. They have the logos, they have the blue backgrounds. And then they show the pictures of the car so that it actually shows you that it is a rental type service. So this is what a skyscraper ad is, and then the white skyscraper. It's just going to be a little thicker, horizontally than the typical skyscraper ad that you see here. 3. Using Canva to Design Wide Skyscraper Ads: Okay, so now we can go ahead and begin creating a wide skyscraper ad. So we're going to click on the plus sign and go to create a design here. And we're going to scroll down to the very bottom until we see the ads section. And here you will find the wide skyscraper ad, and you can see the pixel dimension we're using here is 160 picks was wide by 600 pixels long. So we'll go ahead and left. Click on that and it will bring up the design dashboard so we can go ahead and begin creating are wide skyscraper at now. Since this is an ad will most likely want to use some type of, um, percentage off for sale. So we'll go through and try to find something that looks similar to that. And I also want to use a free one at this time so that we can go ahead and download this and I can show you what that looks like. Um, I really like this one. This looks good. Let's click on this one here and see what we have. It's like we have some type of background image lists What? This image out real quick and see if that just pops in there nice and easily. No, it looks like they took an image and then scale that around. Okay, so basically, what they did is they didn't use any type of frames in this image. They just popped in an image and then layered content on top of it so we could do the same thing. We can go ahead and we confined an image that we like. I'll go ahead, delete this one out for the moment, and you might want to use maybe some symbols. If we go in here and we look at shapes, maybe you can find a cool shape or image that you would like to use if you have something in mind or we can use a photograph. So I'll go to the free photo section again just so that we can make this nice and easy to download later on. And you can get an idea of what we're going for here. So let's lose use this Ah clothing image and I'm gonna do is I'm going to scale this up. I don't want those numbers in there. And as I move this around, we'll start trying to lock it to the grid here, where that white line is. So that's working out really nicely now, I could do this in the center, but having it justified in the center is just gonna look kind of plain and boring. So what? I actually look nice if we come off to the side like this and I'll try to go as far over as I can, and it just gives it a nice ah little nicer visual appeal doing it that ways. And now what we have is that this image is in front of these graphics here. We want to move that back. So I'm going to click on this, and they also rotated their image. I don't need to rotate it here, but if you wanted to, you could do some type of rotation here. But I'm going to click on the image, and then I'm going to select back, and I'm going to keep hitting it until it pushes it back behind this graphical element right here. So that looks really good. Now let's go ahead and fill in some information and will maybe do a little more design work here. So maybe we have a store white sale that we're doing on our online shop. And you could make this any amount that you wanted to. So maybe we've got 30% off in our store right now. Now, the next thing we want to do is we. Of course, we're gonna be using branding colors to whatever, um, our brand or businesses. But since we're just doing this from scratch will just come up with these on our own. So I need to make this background color something different. And it has too much contrast with this image, and it maybe it doesn't go with our brand. So I'm going to click on that. It's Ah, it's just a square element in the background and I'm going to click on the color and I like this charcoal color. So I would like to try to pick something close to that if I can. Let's move this to the center. So we just got the white to the darkness, and I'm going to just try to move this around and eyeball this here and try to get that dark charcoal color, and I think that looks really good So it's already starting to tie in the, um the elements that we have here Now what we need to do is we need to maybe change out this color too. Okay, If it doesn't click it, you can just zoom in here. If it makes it easier for you to work this way, we can zoom in. Ah, I'm at 150% here, and that might make it easier for you to click. But what I want to do is I want to see the's shirts cause I'm actually going to pick colors from these shirts which I think might work pretty good. So we can maybe do that orange and that'll kind of create some uniformity and similarity and help tie this end. So I'm going to click on this and then I'm gonna look at that orange and trying toe eyeball that orange up there also, and it's probably not going to be exact. And if you have a external program that you could color pick these colors, it might make it a little easier for you. Um, I know of no way to do color picking with can va, but, um, you can pretty much eyeball these and get him pretty close. So we got that orange color. That's pretty similar. Now, of course, the words aren't working, so we want to go ahead and change out the color of the words. And we can just do white, which should have plenty of contrast to that background and click the shop. It's fine we're talking about maybe an online store so we could do that, click the shop and then maybe we can change our website name here. I do like this website, so whatever our website would be called and then let's changes to that orange color also, and I think that's just gonna help tie that in now. That might be a little too dark against that contrast ING background. So we might want to. We could keep the orange, but we might need to make it just a little brighter and maybe do like a softer type of orange. Maybe we move that all the way over high contrast, and that looks a lot better now. It's popping a little more easier to see, and then we can, um, leave this here. We want to change out the text because of course, this is a clothing sale. So we'll say, um, store, wide store clothing sale and whatever type of ad that we would actually be running. And I want to change out this blue. So we've been picking colors that are within this image, so it's tying this image nicely together. We've brought in the orange from the shirts, and that's helping pull these these colors together. We've got that nice charcoal and then we have this very contrast in green that we haven't used, and I think that would be good for this circle. So let's click on this circle here, and then we're going to change out that blue to that shirt green color there, and I think that'll look really good and probably want to spend some time trying to get this is closest possible. I'm not going to spend too much time on this because I'm just trying to show you a couple different tips and tricks and things that you can do. Um, that green might have a little more blue in it, so that's pretty close. And I think that works really good. So what we're doing here is we're just trying toe tie in the colors of this image to the rest of our graphic design elements. And by doing so, it just creates, um, uniformity, some similarity. It looks nice. We offset this image. So it kind of gives us pleasing look instead of just kind of basic in the center. Like I said, we could move this over and I'll show you what that would look like, who totally did not work. And I lost my image. Okay, let's ah, scale that back out. Uh, it flipped it on me. That's funny. I've got the other side of the image interesting. So I could do a couple of different things here. I could, um, just fix this by grabbing the other side. I don't not know why. Just Totally. I guess it cropped out. That's why. Did it cropped the image? I didn't mean to crop it. Okay, so we got the image back. Let me show you what just happened. Just so you know. Okay, any zoom out so I can see what's going on here, and I will show you what I did on accident. That was You know how to do it. If you want to do it on purpose in the future. And it's just a basic crop. I hadn't realized that, but we get this image back where I want it, so that looks good. Okay, So basically, you can crop images If I click on the crop button here. What I've done is I had accidentally grabbed a piece and had cropped it out so we could use either side of this image if we wanted to. We could crop out that, um, bar if we wanted to. Maybe that might look good. I kind of like the bar being there, but it might also look good without it. So see how that looks. Yeah. I think I like the bar better there, so we'll leave that in. And it looks like, um, undo doesn't fix the cropping issue with Camba. So if you crop, you can't undo it, you just gotta un crop it and fix it. But, ah, that looks pretty good. I like the way that this turned out. I like the colors like, um, the symmetry and different aspects that we have going on here. And that's just a nisi way to create one of these wide skyscraper graphics and all we did was we came in, we grabbed a quick template, and as you can see, it looks completely different. Ah, I like the layout is kind of what I was looking for here. And you can use the same colors if you want to, But just know that if you're going to change out the image, try to match up some colors. So if we were, you know, using this image, we might pop in some of these yellows and pinks and reds. Also, they had these nice, um, very nice colors that would be common for bridal shower. But you could also go a little more exaggeration with the dark pinks and the purples and reds if you wanted to. But there are some great templates here. You can see there's coupons, there's subscription graphics, anything that you want that would work on your blog's or your website. To try to get people to click or opt in is really what we're going for here. So I hope that helps you out. Whenever you're done creating yours, go ahead and upload it to this course because I would love to see what you have created 4. Exporting Your Wide Skyscraper Ad: Now that we have our wide skyscraper ad created, let's go ahead and export this out as a low resolution J. P g file. And the reason why we're going to use a low resolution J P G file is because we want the file size to be small. You have to keep in mind that if this is going on a website or blawg, there may be a lot of information and images, maybe even some video or audio on that page already, and we're going to be competing for file size. So we want to use a low resolution J. P. G file so that it loads very quickly and doesn't bog down the site because the last thing you want to do is slow down your website on the Internet and cause people to leave quickly . Um, and now, if you have a dedicated server and you don't have a whole lot of images or video and you feel like you could use the high resolution PNG file, by all means go for it. But in this instance, we're going to go ahead and export out the low resolution J. P. G. So well, first, rename this by clicking up here and we will just call this store clothing sale, and you can call it whatever you like to S O that you know what it is later on and I'm gonna click the download button, and here we're going to select image for Web J P G. I'm going to left click that it will go ahead and save out the design so we can come back and edit it later inside of Camba. And it will automatically download that J. P. G filed to my downloads document immediately. And we see that happen in chrome here, so I'll exit this out, and then when I go down to the bottom, I can just left click on that one time it will open it up in a preview window for me, and here we go. Here's our nice advertisement, and we can go ahead and upload that to our website. Like I said, if you want to go back, you can make changes. If you want to keep continuity between your blog's and websites, you can even keep this same layout and just go through and change out the images and the text and recreate these over and over again. But as you saw with some other examples, it's also nice to kind of change up the ads and the way they look sometime. So hopefully that gives you some great insight as to ah so different types of ads that you can create. You can also go pull that resolution numbers that came a suggested. And if you wanted to make a skyscraper ad, you could manually type in that resolution and create a thinner skyscraper ad if you wanted to instead of the wide version. But at this time came I don't doesn't offer a template for that version, but that doesn't mean you can't recreate it on your own whenever you want. Anyways. So, um, I hope you learned a lot. Definitely. Go ahead and upload your image. Teoh This course I'd love to see what you've created. All right, take care 5.
