1. Intro to Building Rapport: Hello, is Jason from Diginotar or care on? Welcome to this course on building report with your online students. If you'd like more of an introduction toe one line teaching, I'll leave a link to my getting higher. Doesn't online teacher course in the Description Building report. If you're on my insurance is so important because it will make your classes so easy. Now I got known for creating all of these many cam games. This Webcam software to, you know, entertain the students, made the classes fun. Make them interesting is an example of one of these many cam games. Monkey drama. It's quite fun, Uh, but it's a lot of bells and whistles on you don't always need it. So in this course, I'll show you the exact techniques that are necessary for building report of your students on. Once you build report of your students, you won't have to put any kind of four into making the classes fun because they'll be naturally fun on. It's a really great thing. Okay, so I'll see you in the next class
2. 2. The Right Questions: was an online teaching mentor for new teachers. The main thing I always told people to do is your students right from the get go was asked . Questions. So how you What's your name? How old do you things like that? But you also want to ask fun questions that will get them engaged. And this is the first step to building report. So these are questions like, What's your What's your favorite food on? This is a good one to do because I always say Stick with food and animals because you'll never go wrong. And even if they're low English ability, you can do lots of T P R. Total physical response basically exaggerated body language. You can do lots of this like or what's your favorite food, or I like that food on. It's just so much easier to understand that I say food and animals because everyone likes to talk about everyone's got an opinion. And so with this question, the idea is thes these categories no, only really easy, but they also lead onto other strands of conversation. Okay, so when you ask, what's your favorite food on? They say banana, then you can move on like, Oh, what color is a banana? Or you can start doing monkey impressions things like that on their leads onto animals say , Oh, the monkey, Watch your favorite animal, do you or do you like the monkey adapted for their ability? Because the important thing is these questions are in place for you to get to know the student's ability if you're if you're meeting them for the first time. So if they're staring at you blankly when you ask a question there ever too shy or their English ability isn't quite there yet, Andi, the way around this, Like I said, if they're looking at you blankly is to do the exaggerated actions, and if they're still not responding, then move on. Move on quickly, cause the big things keep in mind for building report is you are a Children's TV presenter . That's what you got pretend to be on. If the live audience isn't really responding to you, keep the show moving. Just keep it moving because the cameras are on you hands you don't want Oh, uh uh don't want the awkward pauses because that's gonna make this student feel uncomfortable. And our goal is to make them feel comfortable so that they enjoy interacting. Okay, So, uh, no, only do you just ask these questions? But you ask them in a fun way. So, for example, uh, you would say, What's your free favorite foods? Adding this number element, It just turns it into a game. They've got to think now. Or you could bring up the drawing part and say, I'm gonna draw my favorite food, you guess? Or you ask them to draw their favorite food. So it's interactive on. The report is building so adding these fun elements to it. So, for example, with the term your free top favorite foods, I pretend like I'm an interviewer or they're on a game show and I'll hold up pretend Mike, phone or bottle, whatever I have on. But I will. I will just ask them these questions really dramatically. So welcome. Welcome to students of the show. What's your free favorite foods? You've got part of infinite have worried to be fun, obviously on, you know, if they're having fun, the report is building on. Once you get to know these things that favorite foods that favor animals, uh, you're getting to know them, and you can adapt the class around star. So if their favor animals a monkey, then you can bring up loads of monkey related games or props or pop it on this. This just builds and builds over time, and you could make the questions more complicated as you go along, up beginning, stick with food and animals. But they lead onto other subjects so beautifully on catered for the student. You know they if they if you say are, do you what sports do you like? And they like football. Then ask more questions about that. If they look atyou, blankly obviously can't answer it, then move on. Move on to another subject. We'll move on to another game related to a question on one other thing I like to do because this is about conversation, not just you interviewing them, so I encourage them to ask me questions back on. It takes a lot of guidance because they don't normally do it. Um, so I would just start by asking them a question, and then I would say, get asking to say on Did you and what about me on then? Or write it down for them and get them to repeat it. And then when I answer, they get the gist on. You know, once they've done that once the next time, I'll make it into a game. Okay, it's Jason's question. Time on, make it like an introduction is like, OK, I ask you a question. You asked me a question, and then you could say, If you're going to see them again, say OK, next next week, A little bit of homework for you. I want you to think of a question to ask me. And it could be anything is you know, most of the time it's how old do you? But, hey, they've asked a question on they built report on this back and forth is so important for building what? I'm going to get one, too, in the next few classes. Okay, so I'll see you in the next class
3. 3. Children's TV Presenter: So I touched upon making the questions fund to build report. So that leads me on to his next point, which is Don't be so serious. Don't be afraid to make a fool of yourself. Okay? If your self conscious, then the students going to be self conscious as well of your nervous or your shy they're gonna they're gonna really pick up on your body language on react accordingly. Okay, So you want to be You want to be the leader in this situation on you want Teoh, show them that it's OK to have fun. No, it's OK to enjoy the situation. This isn't like school, but it's also serious. It's okay, fool around like, you know, you get your your puppets. I have my duke in here. You know, I'm making attack me and stuff. So when you're asking, Okay, what's your favorite animal? I'll bring out the toucan and say, OK, this is my favorite. Hannah More on. It's just added a fun element. So it and as soon as you get them laughing, you get them talking. That's what I always say. Get them laughing, get them talking. And once, once they're laughing, you know what makes them laugh, and you can build upon that and I'll go into that more later, but not taking yourself seriously. So I like to play the ukulele in class on when I bring up the ukulele, It's not gonna be half hearted. Ah, I've written an article before about be intentional. So if you do something in a class, don't just do it because you read about it where you saw it in a course or whatever on you all that's gonna be a good idea. Make sure when you do it, you're you're going 100% with. So when I bring out the ukulele, it's not gonna be I's gonna be like a B C or something that's not official song, something like that. But you've really got to give it some of you know you don't necessarily have to use the ukulele. I just find it a really good tool, especially if they like music. So in one of your questions, if you've asked, you know, do you like music? Then that's when I'll bring up the ukulele on a lot of time. They really do like to sing. Um, it's just finding a good good song so you can't see what their favorite song is. I've opened a new tab on Looked up the ukulele chords for a song that they said that it wasn't Chinese. Andi, I've learned on the spot and just played it to the res of copied the lyrics over and we sing it together. And so you created a moment there you created a memory you've built report on. Then you know they like to sing. So it's all about finding out their interests. Like I said before, if you don't feel comfortable improvising on the spot, then just learned some basic songs before hat not necessary with ukulele or but just just saying just to sing on, you know, put on a funny voice in this. In this job, if you can't sing, then sing more because it will make them laugh. If you're terrible, if you get the laughing, you get them talking. Okay, Yeah, the use of props is very, very important, especially with the younger ones, and it's important for them that are fun. And it's important for you just so that you know, in your mind you have something to go to. If you can't think of anything. If your questions are falling flat, then I'll bring up to goodwill, the ukulele. Or sometimes, if I I normally have a banana in my break. So I pick up the banana on our pretend It's a phone, and I'll use that as a way to do the question time game show. But Ni ho and you know what? What did you eat today? Have it? I'll pretend to eat the banana. It's literally just switch your mind off, do the first thing that comes to your head and it's normally quite funny on. And the wackier is they will just be enjoying it so much more. Okay, so, yeah, and if that fails, a really good thing to do is just play a game of lights, a tick tack toe or hangman or something on. And then you're sharing an experience together. Your competing in the game is, you know, it'll just builds up over time until eventually you build report, cause you build report through humor and shared experience. Okay, so I'll see you in the next class. Well, cover another element of building report. Okay,
4. 4. Developing a Shared Sense of Humour: So I mentioned in the last class about adapt in the class around their interests. Okay, on the way you do that. So like I said before, if you like it, they like music. Then you sing a song together. But if they don't like music, what options do you have? Okay, eso If they really like, if they really like video games, that's when I'll bring out things like many Cam. Or like No, just the letter. Easy games, Okay, because you know they like to play games, Okay, but you'll get some situations where they don't like anything. They don't like anything. And I want to cover these situations because it can seem like there's some students where it is absolutely impossible to build any report or get them engaging with material. So to do this to start off with it will be a very slow burning thing. Okay, so you'll focus on like doing the course material if they're not for interacting. And they're not laughing any of your jokes. And you tried everything that focus on the course material okay on get them reading the course material on the absolute most important thing is when they reading the course material. Give them so much encouragement. You know, you have your reward systems where you can give them a star or something. You know, they read a line. Well, I was so good. That was really great. Really great on giving him a little reward from it. The reason why you give them so much encouragement is it feel, you know, it feels good when people give you encouragement. Okay? And if you if you give these good feelings than they really start enjoying the interaction more and also it, if they're not very confident, it will build their confidence. So you're trying to tackle the two possibilities off there, Just know, engaged. It'll because they don't enjoy learning English or they just like confidence that shy on encouragement will tackle both of these things. But it's very important when that when the reports not building for you, not to give up very, very important. It's like what I said before. You're the Children's TV presenter. You can't. You can't like end the production in the middle. You've got to keep going. Okay on. I've had many situations where I just couldn't build report of the student on. You know, when I was being really silly, they would look at me like I was insane and stuff on. You know, there's part of me, you know, they get self conscious cause it's like, Oh, no, I look like an idiot. And then you go ignore that part of you because you're you're here to get them feeling comfortable with learning English. Okay, so in those situations I had a student, she just wouldn't do any of the work on. She wouldn't partake in any of any of the activities came up with and would laugh for any of the jokes. Okay, So I would It's I would just pretend, pretend to be her on. You know, I would. I would just keep finding any way to do it until eventually when I was pretending to be her , you know, just like not doing anything, then eventually started cracking a smile. Andi, there is always a way to get student laughing. There's always a way, the mouth. That's why I truly believe that's that once you do that, you're like, Yes, this is the opening because once you get them laughing once, you can then build on it Okay, So what What did I do that got them? Laugh in that time? Okay, let's double down on our successes. That's what you know. That's what I always do in the professional world. If something's working, I will do more of it. So do what you did to get them laughing on, Do it to the extremes. And if that doesn't work, then take it down a little bit. Go back to what originally made them laugh on the repetition of this finding. The sense of humor is the most important thing. And that's why I'm going to talk about in the final class of discourse. Okay, see, in this class.
5. 5. Get a Student Laughing with Just One Word: Okay, So welcome to the most important part of building rapport with your mind students on that is repetition off in jokes. Like I said before, once you found the humor. Once you found the thing that gets them laughing because you want to get them laughing. Got him talking. Remember, you want to constantly repeat this each class, okay? And Craig an in joke because once you've created an in joke of a person, you've got report because you've got shared sense of humor on I do this with my friends. Kyle, when we have an in joke, it just gets more and more ridiculous each time when you add more layers to it. So an example in online teaching scenario, I had a student, Onda We were We were reading this story on it went on for such a long time. It just seemed like week after week. It was focusing on this one animal on it was called the Ochopee. I never heard of it before, So the OTP became like an in joke, and I started making up songs like the O B. Visa, Maisie, things like that on day. And, you know, it would just be to, like, get a reaction out. Then there's, like, No, no more. Who could be, um, you know, you came a point where all I had to do was say the word Ochopee, to get a laugh out of him. And that's what happens when you build report on you. Build these in jokes is it starts to become effortless. So don't try and string this all together now. Um, you know, because once once you get them laughing, getting talking, uh, and if you build the report enough to make it very easy to get them laughing, then it's gonna be very easy to get them talking. Okay? And if you get in talking through asking questions, and that's where the web of conversation will build on, you know, because you want to build up these conversation layers, I asked multiple questions. Get them. You're asking new questions back on, then all of a sudden, it's a conversation. Okay, this is all done through Building report on. And so let's let's review it now. So asking questions, Andi. Then after you asked these questions and he maketh, um, fun. So don't be afraid to be silly. Okay? On number three build it around their interests. Now from the questions on being silly. Once you build it around their interests, then you can discover MAWR ways to expand on. Then you want to create in jokes on. So you want to repeat these in jokes week after week. And if you do all of these steps, you'll find that you and your student will be laughin nonstop throughout the class and you won't need any fancy software. You won't even the props. You won't even need a ukulele most of the time. Now I just sit back. I asked him about that day on a once. Once you find an opportunity to improvise, to get them laughing on, if you can't then use an in joke, you see the in joke becomes your supply of games or your supply of props is something just to bring out. To bring a smile to the face effortlessly on, you have built report with your online student on. It won't be like you're working. It's all it would just be like you're hanging out with a friend. Okay, so thank you for watching this course. I'm Jason from Digital Dog on. I'll see you next time. Goodbye
