2. Unit 01 Build Influence: welcome to part one off this three part series Bill's influence through Lincoln. Let me start by very quickly, outlining the topics that we're going to discuss. First, should you build influence and what happens when you do? Second, how to build influence in three simple steps. Third, using linked in to develop a clear profile forth a quick introduction to Lincoln. Fifth, the baselines that you need on your linked in profile sixth Do's and Dont's for your profile. And finally, you're Arlington. Now what? So should you build influence? And what happens when you do? Let's explore a couple of scenarios. One. It could be that you hold a great job, but you want to keep your options open. You want to track great roles, international assignments, interesting projects. Or you could be actively looking for a new role. Or you've got a small network and you want to expand this. Perhaps you may even want more professional visibility. Whether that's attracting speaking opportunities, the chance to teach or mentor or maybe board rules that might be coming up. It might also be that you've been doing great work, but you find that not everyone is aware of who you are and what you've accomplished. And finally, it might be that you're just getting into exploring digital media, social media, and you want to see how you can approach this in a very systematic and structured way. So why is building influence critical to your success? Well, every day around ourselves, we seek to influence those around us either personally or professionally. And we won the right people to understand the value that we bring to a project or initiative that were implementing or working on a supporting or could be an idea that we that needs support before he can fully grow. What we're trying to do here is create a plan that ensures that you are successful in building this influence for yourself. The fact of the matter is, your work will not always speak for you completely. This means that you cannot simply put your head down and do good work and expect that it will be noticed we recognized, or that you could be compensated. Appreciated for your contribution. You have to remember that influence is not an end in itself. The reason that you're interested in doing all of this is because you know you want certain results. It might be that you want people to feel or to think a certain way. You want seven actions to be taken, or you might want to create dialogue around a particular issue. So you want to do whatever you can to help make these things happen. Now, why should you focus on digital influence? Very simply. If you're going to do all of this work, you want to be able to leverage it, and digital enables you to create a footprint. What you're looking to do is have you were continually supported, continually supported through digital visibility, digital digital consumption and digital attraction. And so what you're effectively doing is also widening your reach outside your immediate or physical network. Now what happens when you start to build digital influence? Very simply, you start to become influential. It means that people begin consuming and appreciating what you have to say. New people around you start to take notice of you on. You'll find that your the projects that you're working on on any initiatives that you're supporting started get strengthened and you get what you're asking for. Whether that's invitations to speak at conferences interesting roles or projects that you might want to be working on, and quite excitingly Ah, whole bunch of other things that you may not have asked for or thought off begin to come together as well. So look at it this way. Before you might be an unknown profile, which means low digital visibility, not really well known for your expertise and skills, perhaps no real digital network or a very small, physical one, and nor tools are ways that you can live rich efforts. Once you go down this process, you will then develop a very strong and clear digital presence. That means high digital visibility, absolute clarity in the marketplace as to your expertise and your skills, the beginnings of growing a digital network and strengthening that, and an effective tool to leverage all of your efforts.
3. Unit 02 How To Build Influence: welcome to Unit two had a bill influence. And in this unit we're going to look at three stumbles steps that you can take to do so, the first of which is developing a clear personal brand. Second, build your network and finally develop a body off work. Now, what does it mean to develop your profile or your personal brand it? Well, it really started taking stock of who you are and what you want to do and assessing your digital footprint, taking a look at what is out there, what is represented by you, what activities you've done and notice whether this is a line with the direction you want to take and do a little bit of cleaning up to make sure that everything is where it should be and that the things that you don't want out there I removed. It means developing a strong and very clear digital profile for yourself, which you then roll out everywhere. So that's resume online resumes online job boards, personal website as well as social media. Now you need to have a simple one page. A website presence doesn't cost anything. There are a whole bunch off freebie options which are very, very good, well laid out good supporting visuals, websites like Weebly, Wicks and strikingly, a couple of examples that I'd like to share with you that you can go and check out. But if you want to really take things to the next level, then you should consider owning your own personal digital real estate your own name domain . So to give an example, this would mean for me owning Romana Marie's dot com as my own space. You also want to be looking at developing your profile through the use of social media. See, gotta use social media. And specifically, what we're looking at is Lincoln. Now, why do you want to do this? Well, effectively, You want the profile and the image you have of yourself to be the one that is, you know, the one that you have of yourself internally to also be the one that is out there externally visible to all because you are more than a role, you are far more than a skills it. So how do you craft this? You're looking to develop a story, your story. And if you have had a long and rich career, you need to find a way to send the size and focus this experience and have it in written and digital form because you don't want to leave your brand development a chance. You want to tell people what they should think off you. Now, the second thing that you are going to do, is it going to build your network Now? What does this mean? Okay, you are going to grow the number of people that you're connected to physically. Of course, you already have a network. But the focus here is to build a digital network. The focus is digital outreach and taking a very structure approached the whole thing. The purpose, of course, is that you want to be able to live rich your network. You want to consider how you can maximize this, and you want to consider also how you can support that through adding value. You want to establish what you're interested in, what you're good at professionally, and then you want to use that to find others who are in similar fields. Others who can learn from you others who you can learn from others who may appreciate what you have to offer. So in a way, what you're doing. Is it building your own personalized audience? It's very targeted, and it should make a difference in terms off the activities that you do moving forward now . Why should you do this? Well, the size of the network matters whether it's a job, you're looking for, people who can help you, or the kind of support you can get or the new connection to can make. It's all about the sites of the network, but this is not simply a numbers game. It's really about the quality. Who are you connecting to? Why are you connecting? What can you gain from it? What can begin from you and should you connect irrelevant strangers? Yes, you most certainly should through a platform like Lincoln through digital media. What you want to do is remove physical spaces and limiting factor and save yourself that the world is your oyster. On, that you can connect to literally anybody or anyone that you think would be appropriate and relevant to you. Now, the third part off this building influence is to develop your body of what Now what I mean by this, really, this is a tangible representation off your capability. It helps. Your body of work helps to drive your branding. It helps to drive recognition of who you are because you're not gonna tell people, um, they're going to experience it. They're going to experience it through what you show them, and it's going to help to establish clarity as to who you are and what your capabilities about. In a way, it's a kind of a digital portfolio, and it would be The body of work is represented by a whole bunch of things, such as articles, videos, podcasts, infographics. But when you are producing this body of work, you've got to look at it in two ways. It is a smudge about content creation, as it is content. Curation. So content creation is you coming up with unique, compelling content on your own content. Curation Israeli about going out there and noticing other content that is similar to yours or in in in the same field, and curating it and sharing it with the audience. The crucial the crucial difference here, being that you add your unique perspective to the stuff that you've created and that helps people to make more sense. Arm of it. It helps people to understand better where you're coming from. Now, what is the value of having a body of work? Well, when you spend time to produce this, you will begin to develop so much clarity about your areas of focus and your expertise where it is that you have a ton of experience as well as what you like and care about and what you don't. And that's a very good thing. What you're also going to be doing is moving from tree is working in a particular area to developing mastery, and through this body of work, you're gonna start developing sustained thought leadership, your thought leadership. So as a recap, the way in which you're gonna build influence is through three areas developing a very clear and strong digital profile, building a network around you appropriate and relevant people, and supporting that with a body of work for them to consume individually. Thes three elements are powerful in themselves. On there's a lot of work that's involved to craft something that's unique and relevant. But together, all three of these things together present something that is cohesive and truly compelling .
4. Unit 03 Developing Your LinkedIn Profile: unitary developing your linked in profile. So in this unit, we are going to answer the question. Why do you need an linked in profile? First and foremost, this is about taking a digital approach, which is far better than taking one that's just based on the physicality off your network of sig ality of all of the activities that you do. Second, it is a one stop shop, a single platform that is truly compelling. 610 million users across 200 countries and territories. And this is a business network of professional network, unlike other platforms, well in social media such as Facebook or Instagram. So it is far more than a digital resume and far more than just about looking for a job. Being on Lincoln is about making yourself findable. What are you working towards? Four areas. Visibility, credibility, influence and reach. In terms of visibility, you've got a profile. You have the ability to reach out to people. You have the ability for people to reach out to you. You have the ability for people to search based on whatever criteria they're looking at, whether geographic or job, title or industry, and to then find you in the search results. You have the ability to engage your readers as well as your connections. CIA connections are people who you have a first degree relationship with your corrected to them directly. Your second degree in your third degree connections are people that you could potentially be connected to. They may still be able to consume your content, and they may also be able to see you through the air connections. But your first degree connections have that direct link, and so you have the ability to engage your readers annual connections and allow others toe get to understand better who you are and how you think. And this is working for you. 24 7 You're looking Teoh Drive more credibility because ah, platform like this provides both the people that you're connected to end a much wider audience out there, an opportunity to discover and know you better. They get to make their own mind up about your trustworthiness, about your authenticity, the value that you could bring, how reliable you are, that sense of authority and so much more. You're also looking to build influence so through these areas that you focus on through the things that you choose to spend your energy or time and your resource is on, and that is then visible through Lincoln. Through the things that you share that you build there, you begin to have an impact on the people that you want to be affected by you and your work on this influences tangible people can point to it and finally reach. By focusing on digital effort, you are able to drive exponential reach because you're now not limited by geographical space. You're not limited by time or your physical network on that is truly compelling. You do not want to leave personal branding to happen naturally. So you gonna use linked in to be proactive. You're gonna look at all things that you can do that can leverage all of your efforts and give you the results to looking for. And you're looking for a very targeted approach
5. Unit 04 LinkedIn - A Quick Intro: unit for Lincoln in the Senate. We're going to take a quick introduction into Lincoln. We're gonna explore all the various features and benefits, and we're gonna drill down into some of the elements within each feature. But let's start with a couple of pointers. First, you should start with a free profile. So you've got the free profile and you've got the paid profile, and it is really best for you to learn and understand that platform a t least for a couple of weeks, if not months before you choose to purchase a paid subscription. I suggest that you invest in a paid subscription because the free profile has many limitations. And the good news is there is an option off a free one month trial that you can experiment with a premium profile. So the first section we're gonna look at is the newsfeed. Now the news feed is what you see on your screen. It is a a dashboard off sorts. You are able to go to various sections off the site, and the main area that is right in the middle is where you will see your feet where the people that you're connected to will be posting stuff and you'll be able to see that the people will be commenting on the things that you've written, and you'll be able to see that on the right. You will see the ads that Arlington on on the left is your profile and other things in relation to your profile. Now the profile. So by clicking on your profile on the left inside, you'll come to your profile page. This is where you go in when you want to add or make any edits to your profile. My network. So when you click at the button on the top, you will see my network. This shows you your network as well as the invitations that a Pending So you will reach out to people to connect. And then when they accept these become your first degree connections. You have a search function that is at the top of search by the top through which you can then search for. People are groups, companies or content, and through this such function, you can then find second and third degree connections. Your pending invitations air also here. So this is where you're able to manage the invitations that you've sent out to people that you haven't heard back from, as well as the invitations that are coming in, people wanting to connect to you and you being able to then either accept or ignore these invitations. Medical arms. You'll be able to see the total number of your connections at the top left hand corner alongside the groups that you have joined and companies that you may be following and hashtags that you are are following as well. That exception is jobs, so Jobs sits at the top as well. Next to the my network area Icahn, and in this area, you're able to then search for jobs. You're able to put in various parameters for these jobs, and you may also see jobs based on your profile and your career interests. So the more information that you put in this section, the more targeted will be the kind of information and jobs that you are able to pull up. The next section is messaging Now. Messaging is what exists within Lincoln, much like with Facebook, but it all sits within the website itself, and you're able to search your messages. You're able to respond within the message there are now lots of additional features. You're able to add attachments. You're able to have pictures anymore, emoticons as well. And they you will see on the left hand corner the my sales Navigator inbox. So if you are a paid subscriber, you one of the things that you'll notice it's a little different is that you have the messaging section for your normal profile. And then when you have the sales navigator you have messaging there separately, called Sales Navigator Inbox she actually to hear is that you need to go to to check for your messages on you can choose whether you want to send out messages through the messaging area or the sales Navigator area. It's up to you. The next section is your notifications and notifications Israeli about catching up on all the things that have been put out there. It gives you an opportunity to see who's responding, commenting, liking the content that you're sharing the post that you are sharing Israel is this stuff that you are commenting on. It's an opportunity for you to get notifications on events that are happening with the people that you're connected to, so it could be birthdays announcements, new jobs that they have taking on board or they've relocated, as well as other news that will be applicable here. The next section is groups. So in Lincoln, you conjoined groups. And this is another way that which you can expand. Your connections are groups can be. You can use the search function to such the different types of groups that you would like to join, and usually each group is moderated by a person or a bunch of people. You have a situation where some groups are easily entered. You couldn't be a member quite easily, just almost automatically on. Then there are other groups away. You would need to maybe fill out some information and give them some background information , and then they will decide whether or not they're going to accept you in the group. Groups are a good way for you to expand the number of connections you have, because you are able to see who's in that group and then reach out to them. So these are some of the groups that have joined, and they were all listed out here. Next to the groups will be another tab for the groups that you have requested, you're able to manage that, and at the same time you also have the ability to create a group yourself. Now. Settings Settings is one of the most important sections in your profile. It is you taking charge off your account from thes subscription point of view, from the privacy point of view from how you want to consume the ads that are out there as well as communication. So notifications coming into a phone or you'll tablet about people responding to things that you've written and you can completely control how this communication happens, where it happens and and and the frequency of it.
6. Unit 05A LinkedIn - Profile Baselines: Unit five Lincoln Profile Breeze Lines in this unit. We are going to go through all the different sections off your LinkedIn profile and make sure that you have covered off and dealt with all of these various sections to flesh out your profile and ensure that you're putting your best foot forward. So let's start with the background image. The background image is that little piece of digital real estate that sits behind your head shot. It is prime real estate because it is one of the first few things that people see would become across your profile. It sits at the top of the page, and it's really solid because this is a visual. So it's It's something that people will respond to and react to a lot more than all of the text and copy. So there's lots of room for you to be creative and to experiment, which you can't get with some of the other sections of Illington profile. So use this opportunity to experiment, try different things. Don't be scared, because this is really a section that you can change it anytime. And that's one thing to keep in mind as you go through different phases in your career or your job. Let's say you have a project that you're working on or you're running a fund raising campaign or anything of that sort. Anything that is off the shorter time free. You can update your visual image here, your background photo here, and make that specific to that nick six The next six weeks on the next three months on, then put back the default image that you would like to use once that campaign is over. So that's pretty good. Pretty useful. And it's really something that you should do. The default background image is the Lincoln Ah blue background with nothing on it. So you have lots of different websites, such a scan via dot com and a couple of others that are free that have, ah lot of the tools that you need to develop these visuals together with supporting elements that you might need, such as photos, start photos and stuff on it. So it's an opportunity to experiment and try different things and see what works and what you respond to. The next section is your head shot, so your headshot Israeli that head and shoulders shot that sits at the top of your profile again, another visual element very strong. It's really about putting your best face forward. Do you want to pay attention here? A couple of things and where possible. I think it's advisable for you to invest in a professional photographer, but for any reason you are not able to do that, then you can get somebody to take the photo for you. With a lot of the cameras that available right now, the phone cameras that available the high screen resolution and stuff like that, it's something that can easily be done. And there a couple of things that you need to focus on. First, the clothing that you are choosing should look professional, clean and neat. Pay attention. The lighting. Natural lighting really is the best. If you're going to go outside, be aware that you shouldn't go out too late in the day or too close to Newman than lighting may be quite harsh. It should be early in the morning or towards the evening. Pay attention also to the mood that you're creating, and the mood is affected by things like the colors that you and that you use for your clothing, the backdrop that you have your body language and also your smile. So you should experiment. You should take lots of different shots and then look at it. See what works for you. Experiment with standing, um, a standing pose. Sit down, have things beside you. Play around with the backdrop. Whether it's photos or wall, Try not to go for the passport. Look, absolutely no selfies, no party shots, no far away shots way. You know, you can't really see your features. No sunglasses, no cropped shots from an existing photo. It should be a close up of a head and shoulders and should be high resolution and it should make you look good. Next suppers name and headline. So name is fairly simple. You should just put your name down in full and, um, I would not advise you to put any other things in there. Sometimes people like the porter a tag or a term that they'd like to use, like, you know, sales maestro, or whatever it is as part of the name. I think you should just have your name there, and that's it. Your headline is the section that sits below your name. The headline has a character limit 120 characters, and the defaults that most people would um used is your job title, which you should avoid. You should experiment. You should. You should use this opportunity to tell people what to think about you, and there's a couple of things you could do. You could use phrases so phrases in blocks off threes, for example. Talent specialists slash educator slash coach is a good way off trying to get people toe. Understand what you do. You could also summarize. Use a phrase. Talk about your skill set. Talk about the areas of expertise you know, your business domains and just play around with different things again. This is also a section that you can experiment with, and you can watch if I and change and update regularly, so you should take that opportunity to do that. Next up is summary. Summary is really one of the most pivotal parts of your profile. Now most people would default in this area to outlining their skills and treat this whole section as a bit of a reg ime. So in that sense, there would be a duplication because they would put stuff in this about section that you can already read in the work experience, which is a waste, a real waste. So I would use the summary section, which again has a character limit a 2000 character limit. I use this to tell a story. Your story. I would write in a way that I would want to read myself so you could look at other profiles that are already out there. You could t get some ideas and notice how you are reacting to what you are seeing. You know, how are you, uh, feeling how How do you feel about the things that you're looking at and then modify accordingly? Don't use section to list out all of your attributes and all of your skills because it's really boring. Um, and this can be switched up at any time. The next section is rich media. Now, rich media is an opportunity for you to showcase your body of work. So it could be an article that you've gotten published, um, videos that you have done up. Even if it's short pictures reports, um, it's really a great area. A great tool to have and what do you need to do is you need to look through your work history and see what's already been done rather than have to reinvent the wheel. Look at what you've already put forward and see whether there is an opportunity for you to then share this. I mean, whether there any confidentiality issues, whether the material is already really, you know, passage you and no longer relevant. Look for evergreen content that you have produced that can be shared and showcased in this area. And if you find that you haven't really got anything, then it's ah, it's worth your time to consider developing something specifically that you can put up in this section next articles and activities. So in the article section, you have an opportunity to a touch, Ah, whole bunch of articles as part of your profile. Now, these articles, at the very minimum you should have between two or three, and these articles should be on topics that form part of your area of expertise. Try not to get into a situation where you write a little bit, um, and then share a link and tell people to go click on something else. Because, you know, sometimes It's a lazy approach, Um, and you're just giving your reader more things to do. If you have the chance to write an article here, that's exactly what you should do. Write the article and full and don't force people toe have to click more and more times to go in. Look at something because the me easily choose not to support your article well, And by this I mean that it should have e article, title or a headline. There should be a subject or some sort of explanatory information below your headline. You should have supporting picture or an image that you can use to make your article more attractive. There should be call outs. Call outs are text that are in much bolder, bigger fund that people when they are looking at the article at A at a glance, they're able to see the call out, and it sort of makes interesting, draws the attention. And so you pick the best bits to put as the call out. One or two is enough. You should also have paragraph hitting hitters and progress haters are how you kind of segregate the different sections of your article and kind of make it easier for people to understand, get get the floor that you're going with and, you know, provide some structure to the material especially important if you have very technical material. So paragraph hit is. And like any other article, it should become prize an introduction, a short introduction. Get into the meat of whatever it is that you're saying and have a conclusion at the very end. Now, besides articles, you've also got a section called Activity Now. Activity comprises three things. The articles that you've posted up your posts. That means the things that you are posting specifically and then your activity and your activity includes your post as well as things that you are responding to things that you're commenting to as well. So what I'm suggesting is that you be proactive, be active on Lincoln. Do stuff connected people read stuff on the Internet. Various articles take the opportunity to share it. If it is an interesting article, take the opportunity opportunity to share it on your lengthen, read the stuff that other people are writing about and sharing comment on it be civilized, of course. Um, be appreciated off the time and effort that people take to do this because once you go down this road of actually doing this stuff, you can understand that it does take time and it takes effort. To do this would be appreciative. And at the end of the day, all of this activity should be guided by one compelling factor, which is provide value. You don't want to assume that everybody out days like you. How do you provide that value if that's the case? So there are people who are going to be, Let's just say people in the same industry that you in there going to be people who are far more advanced than you have had put in far more years and therefore you may not necessarily be addressing this crowd, but there are people who are much younger who are just starting out on their journey, and you could provide value to these people. So when you're faced with a situation, you never done something like this before. Your bit apprehensive. What to do? Ask yourself. How can I provide value? Imagine that you're writing for somebody who's younger. Imagine you're running for somebody who's just starting out, you know, begin or in an intermediate level practitioner in your area, our expertise and share what you know, share what you think, but do it in a way that you can provide context. So don't generalize where possible. Connect the dots and show them higher connecting the dots because that is the way in which you can provide value now in terms of frequency. Start small because what's important is not is not to spend two hours on this today and then say, Oh my God, it's taken up so much my time I can't do this again for another three weeks. There will be a waste if you need to look at it and say how much time pronoun invest in this area? I could do five minutes a day, five days a week, then so be it. Start small, be consistent on when later as you as you see the results. As you begin to see, the impact that you're having is begin to see the consequences of your behavior and your actions. You can increase the frequency, even increase the range of things. So look at the returns. Look at where you are when you start. Look at how you're progressing and evaluate whether what you're doing is working for you and then adjust accordingly. Now, in terms of your work experience section, this is an area that obviously should be fleshed out. You should put all the job titles and the company details in full, put the company named properly, and you should be able to see the logo of the company on the left of it most of the time, especially if they have a website presence. But the dates in but the locations on then go have each work experience. Start off with a brief description off the organization because you don't assume that people know the organization, especially the very small, and then talk a little bit about your responsibilities with Farmall focused on your accomplishments. So no acronyms. Make sure that you spell everything out. Explain the role and talk about your accomplishments and your results in each of these jobs that you've held next up is education. Here. You want to capture all of the various um, educational qualifications that you've got licences and certifications as well should be captured and volunteering. If you are doing some volunteer work, put down what you're doing and who it's for. And if it's something that you've done in the past or something that was a little bit more short term, you can still talk about it. Now there is a section called
7. Unit 05B LinkedIn - Profile Baselines: the next section, we're going to delve into his skills, endorsements and recommendations. Skills is merely a section where you can outline the very skills that you have. I think you're limited to 50 and you can change that up as you see fit over time. Endorsements is not really a section that I would pay a lot of attention to because of the ease with which, um, anybody really can endorse you. And the area that I would really be paying a lot more focus on is putting a lot more Focus on is the recommendations section. So recommendations sits on your profile and is divided into recommendations received as well as those that you have given. There is an area where you can ask for a recommendation from a person, and so really, you want to go to people that you already know first and foremost, especially if you've got no recommendations and you want to go approach people who have showed some appreciation for your work and want to make it easy for them to do this because recommendations are tough in the sense that people may mean well and want to do it. But then they have to sit down, and it's a blank, a piece of paper, and they don't know where to start, what to say. They don't want to go overboard, but they don't want to say to Little's, It's It's very challenging in many ways to give a recommendation, and so how you can kind of work around this whole process is just to kind of ask the people that you are interested in getting a recommendation from either through a phone call or an email, asked them if they are open to the idea, if they could do that and then send them a draft that you are just putting together just to help them and tell them that they have obviously every opportunity to modify it as they see fit. And that makes it a lot easier for the person who's recommending to begin that process because they have something now, something tangible with which to work, and they will be able to then turn that around a lot quicker than if they had nothing at all. So this is one way to go about getting the recommendations. You could look to your current role, as well as past jobs that you've held for various people that you can approach and you can look to piers. You can look to leaders and managers, mentors, suppliers, partners. Basically, anybody actually that has had any kind of contact with you doesn't have to be limited to the roar. You know, a manager only as long as they got some contexts, they can explain how the relationship developed and put some context around timeframe and and how that relationship developed. Then the recommendation. Go be understood and valued for what it is. The final section is Accomplishments and Accomplishments is a section that contains many subsections, including things like publications. So this is an opportunity for you to list down, Um, all the publications, all the articles that you may have written, um may even list down videos and provide links to these body sites. You have an opportunity to talk about the projects that you have worked on, and you wanna do this in a way that expands and doesn't make any kind of assumption about your reader. You want to connect the dots for them, and you want to show them what the project meant for you. What he meant for the team and what it meant within the wider context. You also have an opportunity to miss down the various languages that you speak and any kind of tests that you have taken. Finally, I would say there is a section at the top of your profile that provides contact information . You want to make sure that you have updated this, that it contains your social media handles. It contains a phone number. If you don't want to give your mobile number than your landline, at work would be a new alternative website company website at your current organization Personal Website. Obviously, if you have one and keep it succinct.
