1. Introduction: Have you ever wanted to paint someone close to you? It can be a gift of gratitude, or a nice decoration for the lamp. In this class paint the the people's faces colory. You are going to be learning some of my watercolor techniques. You'll pick up tips for the brightness of primary colors and you will start feeling the effect of arranging vivid colors. You don't need prior knowledge for this class. It's good for anyone who wants to start the painting. It's also great for artists who want to try new techniques. You'll be able to grow your painting skills. Hi, my name is Miki. I'm an artist based in Japan. I have been painting in this type for about 20 years and have exhibits in various places. I organize rent-out project, in which my paintings are rented to decorate shops, companies and clinics. My colorful art attracts people and enhance their motivation. My art exhibition with the Fireking cafe in Tokyo was held last spring. At the cafe the lightings are profit and many customers can relax and enjoy with the good feeling. Art in gallery and the museum is good. But I think it would be better if you could see art your daily life. This can increase your energy level and enrich your life. I once stayed in Germany for three months where my partner lives. My landlords are an old couple who lives downstairs. Their lives looks so nice, they are very kind to us. Japanese and the European culture are totally different, and learning about different culture can be a very fulfilling experience. Our relationship with them is one of the motivation for my creation. To thank you our landlord, I would like to paint them. In this class, I will share how I paint. I'll break it down little by little for you, it's going to be easy to follow along with me. In the end of this class, our wonderful art will appear more than you imagined. Painting with primary colors revitalizes your spirit. No need to be nervous, just relax, love your brush. 2. Project: In this class we use primary colors and paint paper covering. We don't create like photos. At first let's understand the brightness to paint a realistic object covering. But it's not necessarily to do perfect. Don't imagine the finished image at the first. A art intention is valueless. The important thing is discovery. Let's enjoy the primary colors. I'm going to show you how to paint the faces of the landlord we call OPA and OMA today. I use reference images, almost all time when I'm painting. I want to let you know I've included a reference photo for you to use today as well. You can find it under the project under resources tab, on the right-hand side under the column called resources. You can follow if you need to create OPA and OMA, or if you want to paint somewhere around you, you can create your own art. Once you understand the relationship between brightness and primary colors, you can create your own art. I'm going to show you what kind of materials we are going to use throughout the class. At first, you need a watercolor paints. This is my watercolor paint. I use tube paints but I put that the paint on the palette and label it. When watercolor dries, it's not running. It melted again where it is put to his water. If you have pans, of course you can use it. If you want to leave your tube paint on your palette, I recommend you to write the color name front of the color on the palette. There are many similar color. If you write the name, you can add again exactly the same color. In terms of brand, I use watercolor. I use for Holbein. I really like this color pink than Opera, I use this pink a lot of my paintings. For easy use the brand you want to use. It doesn't matter the paint, expensive or cheap. I use yellow, orange, blue, dark blue, purple, yellow green, green, red, pink, and white in this class. If you don't have those colors, let mix the color you have and make them. This is the class about having fun and refreshing your mind with primary colors. Next step is brushes. You should choose the soft brush for your watercolor or acrylics. Flat brush Number 16, paint a base color with the thick brush. Flat brush Number 12, paint a large shadow on the face. Flat brush Number 8, paints more shadows. Round brush Number 0, paint a detail, and not so particular the paper. But I want to say there are weight of the paper. There are three types of paper thickness here. 120, 150, 250. The thicker the paper, the less the buckle and bent. But I feel 250 is too thick for me. Around 150-200 grams paper is comfortable and feeling easy to start for me, but it's good to use your favorite thickness paper. Pallet. I use this portable pallet. It's allowed to you use a simple one. I like soft rate pencil. The main topics in this class, is use primary colors. We don't need to sketch so much detail. I think soft pencil, easier to do, so you can pick whichever you want and eraser. It's just normal eraser. You can find your home. The towel that wipes extra water from the brush. It's good to have a tissue to recover the mistakes. If you drop paint and water on your page, you can simply use these tissue and bucket. I use long time this bucket it's like very artistic. You can use that stuff in your home. I think that's it. Let's go ahead, jump right in. 3. How to Paint: In this lesson, I explain how to paint three-dimensional object in colorful way. Let's paint the cubes. Paint one side pink. Right from top to bottom along the shape of the surface, the color on the brush gradually fade. In the next side diagonally with blue. Next, paint the upper side green. Whether you paint it diagonally or straight, it looks like cube because it follows the shape of its surface. Let's paint the blue on the top of pink. The colors overlap and the new color appears. It looks three-dimensional if we put the paint stick out to the flame. Painting through the side of the cube on the light, from top to bottom. I enjoyed the changing of the color going thinner. Use a thin brush, the paper and paint the edge here with the left cube. Paints some edges to make the shape clear. I like to paint on rough. Paint red the right side, the lower along the Southeast diagonally. Put on the brush plenty of water and paint a color and paint vigorously. Paint the top yellow on rough again. By painting it on rough, it looks soft and movement compared to the left one. Painting the side in pink and blue, there are dark green. The color became darker and it became clear, the difference from other side. If you don't paint it properly, we can still enjoy the pink column background. You can express a three-dimensional object to without painting it exactly. Even if you paint the same object, you can change the atmosphere by using brushes and paints. 4. Convert to the Colorful Way: [MUSIC] In this lesson, I describe how to convert to primary colors. I express my art using primary colors instead of painting it in colors as it is. [NOISE] Let's paint this girl. First of all, make this photo monochrome. [NOISE] By making it black and white, the blackness clearly shows. [NOISE] Mix the primary colors also monochrome. [NOISE] You can see brightness of each color. [NOISE] Let's go back to picture of the girl. Place the primary colors for each brightness. You can see which color has which brightness. Let's paint the girl in primary colors. Paint the bright areas in yellow, roughly with a stick brush. Next paint the details of the eyes, nose, and mouth with dark tone navy. Pink middle area with medium-size brush, the shadow on the face like a makeup outlets to dark tones. On hair on the jaws lines, with a thick brush pink. Paint a medium brightness area on cheeks. Add a dark tone for a sharper look. Paint eyes by arranging various colors next to each other. It looks more brilliant than painting in one color. Add orange to the middle tone area. Put red on hair and dark tone area with thick brush to make it sharp look. In this way, we are able to paint her face in the primary colors. Next lesson, we start to sketch the painting of Opa and Oma. [MUSIC] 5. Sketching: [MUSIC] Let's start to make art of Opa and Oma. At first, grab the pencil. We start with sketches. I draw the points, the position of the face. Bottom, top, left, and right. The size of the faces are decided. Let's decide the size of the face of Oma. [MUSIC] Determine the position of the Opa's ear, and nose, mouth, glasses, and eyes. [MUSIC] Oma's eye, nose, mouth, the other eye. Look at the overall, not the small parts. [MUSIC] After you decide the positions, you draw the details. But it's okay, you draw roughly because you will paint the colors later. [MUSIC] When I have drawn overall, I realize that the position of her eyes are incorrect, so erase, put on the lowered position. If you notice any mistakes, correct them immediately. [MUSIC] Think about hair as grandma's. There are the details of Opa's face. [MUSIC] In the end, draw the collar. [MUSIC] Now, your sketch is finished. Next, let's paint the base colors. [MUSIC] 6. Base: [MUSIC] In this lesson, we will paint light shadow with a thick glass. It's okay to paint the stick out from the line. Let's enjoy the coloring dynamically. [MUSIC] Brush Number 16, paint the bright areas that are exposed to light in yellow. The light is shining from the left. Paint the left side of each faces. Brush Number 16. Next is yellow-green. It's a little darker than yellow. Paint the middle dark area, putting a lot of water to brush will make it easier to paint a large area. We don't have to paint it exactly. Paint roughly and enjoy the movement of the brush. Brush Number 12. Lay your orange on yellow-green. Paint the darker shadow on the face and hair. [MUSIC] Paint according to the shape of the surface. Brush Number 12. The darker area in navy. Using the thick brush, bright area yellow, middle light area yellow-green, middle dark area orange, dark area navy. By separating light to dark, we can look at three-dimensional effect. 7. Add Points: [MUSIC] In this lesson, we'll paint a point of faces, the eyes, mouth, nose, with a fine brush. Brush lines can be expressed by placing the opposite colors next to each other. First, we use brush number 0. Paint Omar's eyes in red, inner corner, edges of brown eye, outer corner. Next is nostrils and the mouth. Paint the shadow of the lip. Paint [inaudible] face in the same way. Eyes and glasses, nose and the mouth. Glasses a little bit again. Shadow of the ear and smile lines. Next is green and brush number 0. Green is opposite color of red. Smile line. Add green to the red color of the nose and the mouth. Eyebrows. Again, paint [inaudible] face in the same way, and the glasses, nose and lips. The position of the eyes, nose, and mouth, have been decided. In the next lesson we will add warm colors. [MUSIC] 8. Add Warm Colors: [MUSIC] Pink is indispensable for my style. Add pink to the sky, water, and plants. This make my art gorgeous. Brush number 12. If you don't have pink, please mix red and white. Let's add pink to the middle dark part of the shadow. [MUSIC] We paint pink the cheeks. It looks cute. [MUSIC] Add pink to the shadow of hair and the jaws. [MUSIC] It become blurry after pink was added overall. In the next lesson, let's make sharp of this painting. [MUSIC] 9. Color Sharpness: [MUSIC] In this lesson, put some dark colors and sharpen the painting. Brush number 0, add navy to eyes, [MUSIC] nose, smile line, [MUSIC] mouth. [MUSIC] Paint opus also. [MUSIC] Come back to the thick brush, number 12. Add red to the dark area and it makes clear the shadow. [MUSIC] Lips and shadow of upper side the eye. [MUSIC] Put the red for hair also, [MUSIC] and shadow of the nose, lips. Eye-shadows all balance and I want to add pink to opus head. [MUSIC] The shadow have become darker and the painting has become sharper. In the next lesson, we will paint a little more detail and sign. [MUSIC] 10. See More Details and Your Signature: [MUSIC] In this lesson, we'll paint along with their own signature. Add more colors and make it sharp and gorgeous. [NOISE] Brush number 12, add orange, paint a shadow under the eyes, and the forehead, and the neck, and jaws. [NOISE] Next, brush number 12. Add pink to the overall shadows. [BACKGROUND] Brush number 0, add red to the woman's eyes, mouth. The color in the mouth gets darker. [BACKGROUND] Brush number 12, green. Paint dark shadow under jaws. The color is dark, the shadow up here. [NOISE] You'd like to signature with your favorite color. [NOISE] It's almost completed. It's okay, finish now. But we will check the overall balance in the next lesson. [MUSIC] 11. Balance: [MUSIC] In this lesson, we'll look at overall balance. Add red and pink to make it gorgeous and light and dark are clear. Because of that, it looks like mostly dimensional. [NOISE] Brush number 12, white mix with little pink or little red. Paint the bright areas. [MUSIC] [NOISE] Brush number 12, add lead to the shadow. [MUSIC] That make it brilliant. [MUSIC] [NOISE] Again, Brush number 12, add pink. [MUSIC] [NOISE] Brush number 0, add a little more red for detail. [MUSIC] [NOISE] Brush number 0, green. [MUSIC] [NOISE] It has almost finished but I paint a little more in the next lesson. [MUSIC] 12. A Little More: [MUSIC] In this lesson, we'll paint a bumpy of the face and make it a little more details. Brush number 8, blue. We paint shadow of a round eyes, the little shadows. [MUSIC] Brush number 8, pink. [MUSIC] Brush number 8, orange. [MUSIC] Let's paint those where the color is light. [MUSIC] Brush number 0, green. Add colorful eyes. Add to shadow and winkers. [MUSIC] Brush number 0, purple. Add colorful eyes again. Look at overall and put them for the point. [MUSIC] It's finally finished. The colorful portrait is complete. [MUSIC] 13.
