1. Introduction and Supplies You Will Need: Hi, friends. How are you? I hope you're having a great day today. I'm excited about sharing this project with you. This is a drawing and watercolor painting project that I designed, especially for kids. Students do not need to have any drawing or painting experience at all to be successful with this project. I will guide students step by step through all the steps that they need to take. Today, we are going to be creating this cute little black cat. Let's talk about the supplies and the materials that you will need for this project. The first thing that you'll need is a sheet of watercolor paper. You will need a set of watercolor paints and a paint brush. I'm going to use a paint brush that's this size, but just use what you have available to you. You will need a cup or a bowl with clean water. You will also need a black oil pastel or crayon and a yellow oil pastel or crayon and a paper towel. So go ahead and gather all of these supplies and materials, and I'll see you back here in the next video. 2. Step 1: Draw a Peeking Cat Design: In this step, we are going to draw our cute kitty cat design. So let's get started. The first thing that we're going to do is we're going to pick up our black oil pastel or Black crayon. I'm going to use a black oil pastel. We're going to go pretty close to the bottom, but not all the way to the bottom, about right here. And we're going to make two small pas, okay? Let me show you how we're going to do that. These paws are going to look like they're floating in the air, but we're going to anchor them in a few minutes. Okay. So let's make an upside down, letter coming this way. And then we're going to do the same thing over here. Upside down, letter U coming this way. These are going to be the paws. Now what we're going to do is we're going to make the little toes. So I'm going to make, I guess about three little toes like this. And if you'd like to put some nails right here at the ends of the toes, so it looks like our paws are kind of floating in the air, and we need to anchor them to a fence because we are going to draw a little cat that is peeking over the fence. So we're going to draw a straight line starting here, and then we're going to jump over the paw and then create another line right here between the two paws, jump over the paw and then come out to the other side. So let's go ahead and do that. Going to start here with a straight line, jump over that first paw, jump over that second paw, and come out the other side. So we have our two paws and our fence. Let's add a little bit of detail to our fence. I'm going to add some lines coming down just like this. There we go. If you'd like to add a little bit more detail for the fence down here, for example, if you want to make some little lines like this, so it looks like wood, go ahead and do that, but you don't have to do this. I'm just using some light lines. Okay, now what we're going to do is we are going to create a cat peeking out over the fence. Alright, let me show you how we're going to do that. We're going to start here in the middle of this paw, and then we're going to do the same thing on this side in just a moment. So we're going to make a slanted line coming up and a slanted line coming up. And then what we're going to do is we're going to make a slanted line coming down, a slanted line coming down. And then we are going to connect these two lines with a curved line like this. So this is the top part of our cat's head, and these are the ears. Okay? Now what we're going to do is we're going to make a small face down here, and the mouth of the cat will be hidden by this fence. Alright? So let's make some eyes. You can make any type of eye that you'd like. Some people like round eyes, some people like more cat eye shape, that's what I'm going to do. I'm going to make curve line, curve line. Curve line and a curve line. And then inside of these shapes, I'm going to make Iris. And then I'm going to make the pupil, and it's going to be just a straight line doubled up. Alright. Now what we're going to do is we're going to make a small nose. I'm going to make a nose that looks like this, little triangle. And remember what I said about the mouth? Make a small line here, and then the mouth is down here, and it's being hidden by the fence. I want to make sure I put some whiskers on here. So I'm just going to go right over those paws. Another thing that I like to do when I'm making a little cat, I like to put some lines above the eyes, some little dots, actually, they're not lines. They're dots. So I'm going to do that. I think that makes it look really cute. And then if you'd like to add some triangles inside of the ears, that always adds a little bit more detail. Alright, you don't have to do that part, but that's just a suggestion. That's what I'm choosing to do. Now, what we're going to do is move to the sky, and we're going to add a little bit of detail in this sky. So I'm going to add a pretty large moon. That's the letter C, and then I'm going to close that shape with a curved line. And then what I'm going to do is I'm going to wipe my hands off a little bit because oil pastels can get a little bit messy, wipe my hands off, and then I'm going to add some stars to my sky. And for this project, I'm just going to add some little circles, some small circles, and these are going to represent stars. So I'm going to go ahead and take a moment to do that. I'm just pressing fairly hard with my yellow oil pastel, and I'm making sure that I don't smear my black oil pastel because oil pastels can get real smeary. Alright, I want to make sure I have quite a few stars. Put the over here. How does that look? I think that's good. Alright, so what's going to happen when I paint over these stars is those stars are going to resist the watercolor paints and they will pop out. You'll be able to see that they have the color will pop out. Okay, so I'm excited about the next step, which will be to paint our design. I will see you back here in the next video. 3. Step 2: Paint the Design: In this step, we are going to paint our design, so let's get started. The first thing that we're going to do is we're going to add a drop or two of water into each of our pans of paint. And what this will do is it will soften up the paint a little bit, so it is easier for us to use. So when I am teaching students, I always suggest adding just that little drop of water. It really helps. Now that our paints are softening up, let's turn our attention to our design. So here we have a cute little cat peeking over a fence. And what we're going to do is we are going to paint the whole entire design right now, okay? I am going to keep a few areas white. I'm going to keep the moon white, and I'm going to keep this part of the eye white. So that will really stand out. Alright? I'm going to paint the little cat black, and I love little black. Cats. I have a little black cat myself. And so I'm going to paint the cat black. I'm going to do that last because black is a really strong, powerful color, and I want to make sure that I don't muddy the water too much with my black paint. Okay. So I'm just going to start with maybe some green eyes and some pink on the ears and the nose, maybe a brown fence, and then I will move to the sky, which I will paint. I haven't really decided yet. I'm going to paint it either a dark blue or purple. I haven't decided, but the good news is you get to choose the color that you would like to choose. Think about the nighttime sky and then make your decision. You can even do a combination of blue and purple, if you'd like. Sometimes I like to do that, as well. So I'm going to start out with my pink. I'm going to put a little bit of water in one of my wells and make some light pink paint because I don't want my pink to be too dark. So I added quite a bit of water and just a little bit of paint. Now I'm going to move to green. This color green looks great to me. You might not have the same exact colors in your palette. That's okay. Just use what you have. Gonna choose some green eyes. Now I'm going to move to the fencing, and I'm going to rinse my brush out and add a little bit of water into one of my wells. And then what I'm going to do is I'm going to add some brown paint because I want my fence to be a lighter brown. I don't want it to be too dark. Oh, that's perfect. Alrighty. Now I'm finished with my fencing. I'm going to move on to a blue sky. I've decided to use blue. So I'm going to put a little bit of water and some blue paint into one of my wells. I'm not going to make it super dark. Remember, if you want something a pink color to be a little bit lighter, then you use more water, and if you'd like the pink color to be a little bit darker, then you use a little bit more paint. Alright, I don't know if you can see this yet, but my star oil pastel, the yellow pastels, oil pastels that I use for this sky are resisting the paint, and they're kind of popping out. Alright, friends. So the last thing that I'm going to do is I'm going to paint my little cat black, and I'm not going to paint it a really dark black. It's going to be a lighter black, more of a gray. So let me show you how I'm going to make some light black or gray. I'm going to place a few drops of water into one of my wells, and then I'm going to add just a small amount of black paint. Black, as I mentioned before, is a pretty powerful color, so you only need a very small amount of the black paint. So I'm going to go ahead. Oh, that's a nice gray. Go to go ahead and paint this little kitty. Alrighty friends, I'm back, and I'm finished painting. My little cat, I think he looks so cute, and I'm very happy with the way that my painting turned out. I hope that you had a lot of fun with this project. I will see you next time.
