1. Introduction and Supplies You Will Need: Hi friends, how are you? I hope you're having a great day today. I'd like to introduce you to this project. This is a drawing and watercolor painting project that I designed, especially for kids. You do not need to have any drawing or painting experience at all to be successful with this project. Today we are going to be learning how to draw and paint this cute gnome. Let's go with this applies in the materials that you will need for this project. The first thing that you'll need is a piece of watercolor paper. You will need some watercolor paints. You will need a paintbrush. I like to use this size paintbrush, but just use what you have available to you. You will need a cup or a bowl with clean water and a permanent marker. Permanent means that the marker will not run around. If you add water to it. You will also need a paper towel. So go ahead and gather all of those supplies and materials, and I'll see you back here in the next video. 2. Step 1: Draw a Gnome Design: In this step we are going to draw our cute known. So let's get started. The first thing that we're going to do is pick up our marker, put the cap on the back of your marker so it doesn't get misplaced. Then what we're going to do is find the middle of our piece of paper. The middle of my piece of paper is about right here. So the first thing that we're going to do is we're going to draw an oval shape, not too big, but not too small. That's going to be the nose of our known. From this shape. We're going to build our character. We're going to create a hat up here in a body and a beard down here. So go to the middle of your nose and we're going to make a curved line down and then do the same thing on the other side. Curved line town. That's going to be the bottom of our gnomes hat. This num is not going to show his eyes. His eyes are going to be underneath his hat. Okay. All right. The next thing that we're going to do is we're going to go up and we are going to create the hat for our unknown. So what you're going to do is you're just going to make a curved line coming up like this. I hope you can see the top of that. I think Ukiyo-e. So it's basically just a curved line that goes up almost to the edge of your piece of paper. Now what we're going to do is we're going to come down with a kind of a curved line in that is going to be the other side of our gnomes hat. Keep in mind that all gnomes hats are going to be a different shape just based on the type of lines that you make. Right at the top of my hat, I think I'm going to put a little palm, palm and that's just a little half circle because my palm, palm is going to be off the page. Now what we're going to do is we're going to come down here to the bottom part of our piece of paper and we're going to create our gnomes beard and his little body. Remember this is a cartoon, so it's not going to be really realistic. So starting here at the corner, at the end of our two lines, we're going to come down and then come to a point. So it's just a curve line that comes down around and then point. And then same thing on this side. And keep in mind, if you're gnomes, Beard is a different shape than this. That's a good thing. If you want to add a little bit of detail, similar lines coming along here, you can go ahead and do that. Now we're going to come down here to the bottom and we're going to make our gnomes body. And they have really small little bodies. So I'm just going to make a line here and a line here about the same link. And then I'm going to curve around and then close it up. Now I'm going to make his hands pretty small. You're just sideways letter u's. And then I'm also going to make his little feet can make the hands and feet however you'd like. This is just the type that I'm going to make. Okay, now that we have this part of our known finished, we're going to go back up to the hat and we are going to put some patterns in her hat. Think of some different types of patterns that you like to use when you are creating art. A pattern is something that repeats itself. So I think what I'm going to do is I'm going to start out with some broken lines like this at the very edge of my hat, the bottom of my hat. And then I think I'm going to put some dots. And I'm just going to build upon this pattern and go all the way up my piece of paper, all the way out my hat. All right. So let's see, let me see What I'd like to do next. Maybe another curved line going this way. And then maybe some spirals because I really like spirals. And then I'm just going to keep going on and on until I get to the top of the hat. All right, friends, I am finished with putting the patterns on my knowns hat. What I'm going to do now is I'm going to move down here towards the bottom of my piece of paper. And I'm going to make a line. This is for the ground that my name is standing on. And then I'm going to create some details for the background. So you can make some trees, you can make some mushrooms, you can make some pine cones. Anything that you feel like should be in the background for your known. I think I'm going to make some hills. So maybe I'll start out with a hill right here. They'll come up. I'm going to jump over my notes. And then maybe I'll make another hill over here like this. Come down. Alright? And now maybe I will create some little trees. These pine trees. Maybe I'll make another one over here in the background. And I think that looks really cute. Maybe I'll make another one over here, but this one's going to look a little bit bigger because it's closer to our known. So the way that you make a pine tree is you just mix some slanted lines going one way and then some slanted lines going another way. And I think down here at the bottom I'm going to make some little mushrooms. So I'll make the mushroom bottom, which is a curved line, curved line right here and then a little cap. And then coming out from this curved line will make the stems. And then I can even put some polka dots on here. Maybe I'll put another one over here. Here we go. Then if you want to put a little bit of grass, can do that. It's completely up to you. All right. I think I might want to put some clouds in the sky. Sometimes if there's a little space in the sky, like to fill it with a cloud or two. Just creates a little bit more interest. I like these big fluffy clouds and I'm going to keep those white already friends to take a look at your drawing. And if there's anything, any spaces that you feel like you need to fill up, go ahead and do that now before we begin painting, when you are finished picture you take the cap off of your marker, put it back on to the marker so it doesn't get dried out. In the next step, we will start our painting process. 3. Step 2: Paint the Background: In this step we are going to apply some watercolor paint to our known design. So let's get started. The first thing that we're going to do is we are going to place one or two drops of water inside each pan of paint. And what this will do is it will soften up the paint and it will be easier for us to use when we are ready. So let me take a moment to do that. Here we go. Now let's turn our attention to our design. And with my Noam, I kinda know already what I'm going to be painting the colors that I'm going to be painting with. I think I'd like to start out with a blue sky, some brown hills and some green grass down here at the bottom. I'm going to leave my gnomes beard white, and I'm going to leave the clouds white as well. And then I haven't decided on the hat. I'm thinking it might be neat to have the different rainbow hat. So I'm still deciding on that. Keep in mind, you can change your mind anytime that you like as you're applying the colors. So if you think, oh, I want to use blue instead of green, go ahead and do that. Okay, this is your art and you get to choose the colors that you'd like. So what I'm going to do is I'm just going to start painting. And I think I'm going to start here at the sky with the background. And then in the next step we will move to the next. Already friends. I'm finished with my background. And I wanted to let you know that I wanted to keep my mushrooms white because there's a certain type of a mushroom that is white and it has these red dots and I really like the way that that looks. So when we come back, we will be painting our nome and his hat. So I'll see you in the next video. 4. Step 3: Paint the Gnome: In this step we are going to paint our nome and his hat. So let's get started. The first thing that I'm going to do is I'm going to paint my gnomes nose and I'm going to paint that are really, really light pink. So I'm going to put a little bit of paint and a lot of water in my palette here, one of my wells. And I'm going to take a little bit of that paint off and then I'm going to make sure that it's a light. I'm also going to paint two circles on this side here at the side of his nose because those are going to be his cheeks. Normally wouldn't be able to see his cheeks, but I just decided that that would look cute. So that's what I wanted to do. We're not going to be able to see our nose mouth because it's covered up by the beard. Now I'm going to make his arms and his feet. So I think I'll make both of those brown. There we go. Now, I haven't decided on his little outfit yet, on his clothing. I'm going to move to his hat in. I already know that I want to use the rainbow colors for his hat. So I'm going to start with red. And I'm going to put red here at the bottom. And then I'm going to move on. So let me start with red. I'm not going to worry too much about staying inside the lines because I do want my colors to mix just a little bit. So I'm going to start with my red. Then I'm going to rinse my brush. And then I'm going to move on to orange. And I'm going to overlap the red just a little bit like this. So my orange is going a little bit into my red. Now I'm going to rinse my brush really well. And then I'm going to move on to yellow. And I'm going to do this same thing. Look at the outright, that is, It's so nice going to touch that orange. So it kind of moves into my yellow. So I have red, orange, yellow now I mean, my green screen. And I'm going to touch my yellow. So it kinda blends together a little bit. So that's Corinne going to touch my greens, so it kind of plans a little bit. And then I'm going to use my purple and pink. So I think I'm going to paint my hearts pink. And I'll be some blending care with my purple. So I have to be a little bit more careful with that. Kind of want them to blend a little bit. There we go. So I feel like this purple might be a little bit too dark. So this is good. I'm going to do. We're going to take my handy dandy paper towel. And I'm going to carefully just touch in some of that paint will come up. Do you see that? So I think that that looks better. Maybe I'll add even just a little bit more water. Yes, that looks really good because I wanted to be able to see that pattern. I wanted to be able to see the pattern. And as you can see, the colors have blended and that's the look that I was looking for. I did go out of the lines a little bit right here, but that kinda stuff doesn't bother me. So I like the way that, that looks. Remember the nature of watercolor paints is that it likes to spread and run around. That's the beautiful thing about it. All right, so I think I'm going to come down here and I'm going to create his clothes and I think I'm just going to use some red. Red would be the best color. You might choose a different color and that's fine. Then I am going to choose red. I think that that'll be fun and festive for my gnome. Already friends, I'm finished with my known painting. I really like the way that it looks. I hope that you have fun with this project and I will see you next time.
