1. Introduction and Supplies You Will Need: I Hi, friends. How are you? I hope you're having a great day today. I'm excited about sharing this project with you. This is a drawing and watercolor painting project that I designed, especially for kids. Students do not need to have any drawing or painting experience at all to be successful with this project. I will guide students step by step through all the steps that they need to take. Today, we are going to be creating this word love with the apple as the Oh. Let's talk about the supplies and the materials that you will need for this project. The first thing that you'll need is a square piece of watercolor paper. You will need a set of watercolor painting and a paintbrush. I'm going to be using this larger paint brush. But if you feel like you might have some small spaces, you might also want to have the option of using a smaller paint brush. You will need a cup or a bowl with clean water. You will need a pencil with an eraser and a permanent marker. Permanent means that the marker will not spread around if you add water to it. You will also need a paper towel. So go ahead and gather all of those supplies and materials, and I'll see you back here in the next video. 2. Step 1: Draw a LOVE Sign & Apple: In this step, we will draw our design with pencil. So let's get started. So here we have a square piece of paper, and we are going to write the word love. And we are going to use bubble letters that are going to be pretty big. We'd like to fill up most of the space of this piece of paper. So we're going to use large letters, but we need to make sure that each letter fits onto our piece of paper. Okay? So we're going to have the letter L and then an apple here that's going to represent the O. V is going to be down here, and then E is going to be right here. Your letters might look different from my letters. Your letters might go in front of another letter or behind another letter, or they might overlap a little bit. All right? It just depends on what you'd like to do. So we're going to start out with our pencil because there might be some erasing that you might need to do so that you can get the design the way that you want it before we add our marker. Alright? So we're going to start up here on the upper left, and we're going to start with the letter L. And so we're going to decide how large we'd like our L. I think I'm going to make my L about this large, and I'm pressing pretty hard on my piece of paper because I want you to be able to see this pencil line, okay? So I have my first line. This is for my. It doesn't have to be perfect. And I'm going to come here and come around and come around like this and then come up and then close up with a bubble. I wanted my L to be tilted a little bit to the side. Right now, I'm going to make an apple here, and that's going to represent the letter O. So I want my apple to be a little bit behind this letter L. So I'm going to start about right here, come up, and come down, and then I'm going to follow my pencil line around and then come out the other side, and then close up with a curve line. Alright, now I'm going to finish up my apples, so I'm going to make a curve line coming out of the top and another curve line, and then I'm going to close up, and that's going to be a small stem. And then I think I'd like to add a little leaf with a curve line coming back to the stem. And then I made a couple of little veins. Maybe I'll make one more. There we go. Alright, so I have my L and my O represented by an apple. And down here, I'm going to make my V, and my V's going to be behind the L as well. So I'm going to come out about right here. Come down. Come back up. Notice I don't have any sharp angles, and then come down. Well here's a sharp angle right here. And then when we go back up, we will connect with part of the line. So here's my L, my O, my V, and I need to make my E right here. All right? If some of your letters are larger or smaller than the other letters, don't worry too much about that. All right, I'd like my E to be right here and it's going to be connected to my apple. So I'm going to start about right here because I want it to be a little bit close to my V. I'll make a straight line here coming out. Like this. Then I'm going to come back over here, come down with a slanted line, and then I'm going to curve around. So all I need right here is the middle part of my E. So come down, come out. Come back in, and come down. So as I'm looking at my E, I see that this part is a little bit longer than this part right here, so the top part is a little bit longer than the bottom. So I can either extend this part out a little bit more or I can make this part a little bit shorter. So I think I'm going to erase this, and then I'm going to extend it out just a little bit more. Oops. All right, so I'll come out here. Come around. All right, that evens it out a little bit. If you like the look where one of your E parts is a little bit longer, you can go ahead and keep it. Alright, so now we have our L O, represented by an apple, V, and our E. And what we're going to do next is we are going to cover those lines as long as you're happy with them and you're finished erasing, going to cover these lines with our Sharpie marker. So just go slowly carefully. And the more careful you are with this part, the less erasing that you'll have to do. There we go. I feel like my marker is running out of ink, but it made it through this project. So I see a few lines that I need to erase, my pencil lines, where I didn't quite get on those pencil lines with the marker. So I'm going to just take a moment to erase those areas that I feel I need to erase. Here's another area down here. I'm not sure if you can see that on the video. Just do your best. Alright, so there we go. In our next step, we will apply some watercolor painting to our design. 3. Step 2: Paint the Design: In this step, we are going to apply some watercolor painting to our design. So let's get started. The first thing that we're going to do is we are going to add a drop or two of water into each pan of paint. And what this will do is it will soften up our paints a little bit, so they are easier for us to use. So I always encourage students to take that step because it really does help. And now that our paints are softening up, let's turn our attention to our design. I'd like you to take a moment to think about the colors that you would like to apply to your L, your O, which is an apple, your V, and your E. I think that I am going to use red for the apple with a brown stem and a green leaf, and I am going to use some rainbow colors, I think, on the rest of the letters. So I think that's the design that I'd like. I might consider painting the background black. But you get to choose any colors that you like. That's just what I'm thinking about right now. Sometimes I do change my mind. So if you see me, change my mind at any point, it's just because I had a different idea. So we're going to paint the background in the next step. We're just going to focus on the letters L, O, which is an apple, V, and E for this step. Okay? Because I know that I'm going to paint my apple, red, I'm going to start there. I am going to try to stay inside of the lines, and I am going to remember that if I'd like a brighter, more vivid color of red, then I'm going to add more paint. And if I'd like to have a softer color, I'm going to add a little bit more water. So there we go. You can even have a couple of colors for your apple if you'd like. It's up to you. Now I'm going to paint my stem and my leaf. Now I'm going to start with the rainbow colors on each one of these letters. So I'm going to have to make sure because I do want to fit all of the colors. Let's see, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. I want to fit them all on each letter, so I'm going to have to make sure that I leave enough room. I do want my colors to run into each other, so I'm going to make sure that they touch each other as I am applying them. So there's my red. I start with my red. And then I'll move to my orange and make sure that it touches my red. And hopefully by the end, I won't run out of space and I can get all of the colors on there. All right, so there's red now orange. So I'm just going to move on down. I'm going to touch that red, and hopefully the colors will blend in with each other just a little bit. You know what I forgot? I forgot to do this part of the V. So let me go back and do that just a little bit of red. So now I can go back and do my orange. Remember, if it's not perfect, that's okay. That makes it more fun, actually, I think. So just do the best that you can. Alright, now I'm ready for yellow. Like a strong yellow color. And then if I have too much space at the end, I just start over with my red and then my orange and then my yellow all the way down. Alright, I think what I'm going to do is I'm going to speed up the video, and I'll be back in just a minute. Alrighty. I love my artwork. I think it looks great. Remember, you can use whatever colors you like. You can use solid colors. You can use many colors. You can use just a tie dye look. It's completely up to you. So when we come back, we will be painting the background. 4. Step 3: Paint the Background: In this step, we are going to paint our background. So let's get started. So I want to mention one thing before we get started painting. If you feel like you really like the way that your artwork looks right now with a white background, it is your choice. It is your option to keep it white and not put paint on it on the background at all. So if you'd like to do that, go ahead and do that. That's just fine. I like the way that mine looks with the white, but I think I am going to go ahead and paint the background. I was thinking about pink or blue, but I really think that I like to use the color black. Because for one, I love the color black. But also, I think that the black paint will really make those colors stand out. So I am going to use that color black. So I'm going to go ahead and I'm going to drop quite a bit of water into one of my wells, add some black. My background's not probably going to be a very dark dark black, but it will be pretty dark against those colors. Oh, I love it. So much. Okay, so what I'm going to do is speed up the video. I'm going to try to stay away from those rainbow colors and from that red apple, the red on the apple, because I want to make sure that the black color doesn't overpower those colors. So I'll see you back here in just a minute. Alright, friends, I'm finished painting my background. I really like the way that it looks. I hope that you had a lot of fun with this project, and I will see you next time. Mm hmm.
