1. Welcome!: I believe the holidays
are to be enjoyed by people of all ages
wherever you are. You're never too old. Who doesn't love
Valentine's Day? Hi everyone. My name is Carrie Sanders
and I'm an artist, a teacher, and a creative
here in St. George, Utah. I raised five kids and
now I have 12 grandes. And the holidays
have always been a really special time
around our house. And this led me to
create a painting book and pattern packets
that were picked up by a big box store and
distributed across the nation. And I love to paint and
share holiday ideas. Today, I have for you an adorable little
Valentine Cupid num. And this is a fast, easy watercolor piece for
people of all abilities. In this project, we are going to learn some techniques
such as base coating, lifting off highlights,
stroking in highlights. And we'll be adding some
final details with a gel pen. You could do this piece
in your sketchbook. You could do it on watercolor
paper like this and frame it and add it to
your holiday decor. Or you could make it into a
darling Valentine's Day card. If this looks like a fun
project you'd like to do, then grab your paints
and come with me in studio and let's
get started together.
2. Supplies: Welcome everyone. I am so excited
to get started on this cute little
Valentine Cupid Noam. He's so fast and easy and we won't need
very many supplies, so it should be fairly simple to pull everything
together quickly. First of all, you're
going to need to print out the PDF that I have provided for
you, the pattern, and trace that onto a piece of tracing paper vellum
so that you can easily manipulate that and work
it on your paper or on the greeting card
if you're doing a fun Valentine's Day card, once you have that trace, you're going to need
some graphite paper to apply the pattern. Or you could use a light box. Whatever you have
is totally fine. And I show you how
to do that when we get into the video a
little bit further, I'm going to recommend
that you use some watercolor paper that
is 140 pound or better. This will give you
a great result and you put so much
effort into painting this beautiful piece that
you're going to want to have some nice paper to give you the best
results possible. So 140 pound water paper is always going to be my
recommendation for that. And then for our paints today, you're only going to need a few. You're going to need
some white gouache and some bright red watercolor. And Naples yellow watercolor
and burnt umber watercolor. And then you're also going
to need a metallic gold. I know they come in
a variety of colors. I would recommend something
that's very light, not one of the darker golds, but one of the
really light ones. And we will be mixing our
own pinks with the white. So you're going
to need a palette that you have room to mix on. And then for some of
her fine detail work, you need to have a
white gel pen or white posca pen is fine tip that you can
work with easily. My favorite gel pen is
the sigma unit ball. It comes out nice and
smooth and wonderful. But today I'm actually going
to be using the posca pens. And for brushes, I would just recommend what
you're comfortable with, but you will just
need a small variety of flats and rounds
that are just small. You will definitely be using a number one scripture to do
some fine line detail work. And then you're going to need a cloth and water container. And my favorite tool
always handy-dandy tissue. You'll be using this a
lot to be dabbing up some paint because
we'll be doing a lot of lifting off to, to get to our highlighting, which is really fun technique. And to apply your pattern, you're going to be needing a pencil or you
could use a stylus. I'll be using a stylus and I'll show that to you
a little bit later. So why don't you go ahead and take just a moment and gather all your supplies together and I'll see you in the next video. We will start painting.
3. Apply Cupid Pattern: Okay, let's go
ahead and transfer our pattern over and then
we can start painting. I've just taken the PDF
that is provided for you in the lesson and copied it
with some vellum paper, and then tape that to my watercolor paper and put a piece of graphite
underneath it. And then I usually just
test a small section first to make sure that it's facing down in the correct position. And it looks like it is. So I'm gonna go ahead and
fast-forward the video here and finish putting on this pattern and you can
do the same with yours. Alright, before you completely
remove your pattern, keep your tape in place
and just lift this up and see if you missed anywhere or want to
adjust anything. I think this looks just about
where I'd like it to be, so I'm safe to go ahead
and remove my pattern. And I'm going to
set up my palette. And let's go ahead
and get painting.
4. Cupid Basecoat Pink: We are ready to go
ahead and get started painting our cute
little Cupid gnome. We're going to
start from the back and work our way forward, which means we're going
to start with our wings. I'm using a very light gold and we're going to just put a really light
coat on it apart. As you can see, I've already reactivated this with
some water on it. And now I'm just
going to mix that in a little bit and make sure
I can load up my brush. And we'll go ahead
and put some on the wings and then
we'll actually probably be dabbing some
off with our tissues. So have your tissue handy and just go ahead
and base coat that. In base coat means
we're just going for one value, just straight paint. But I do have quite a bit of water in this just so you know, I'm not going for really dark. I think this is going
on light enough that I'm not going to
have to dab it off. That's about the shade
that we're going for is quite light. Let's go ahead and continue on. Smoothing out some
brushstrokes. Very good. While that's drying,
let's go ahead and mix our lightest value of pink. We're going to pick up some
of this white gouache. I'm going to put it over here, pick up some water and just the tiniest
amount of bright red, you can see a tiny
amount goes a long way. Okay, make it a shade
that you're happy with. I'm good with this. So let's go ahead. And again, this is just base coating, meaning we're going for
all when shade one value. Now we're going to take this same shade and we're
going to do his beard. I know that sounds
funny right now, but it'll be okay. Yes, I'm gonna go right
over the top of that arrow. I'm not going to try
and go around it. Alright, I went a
little outside. They're just going to pick
up clean water on my brush. Let's let that dry for a moment.
5. Cupid Gown & Bow: For this next phase, we're
going to use our burnt umber. And what we're going to
do is we're going to, this is a scrap piece
of watercolor paper. So we're going to
base in his gown, Let's say that that's his gown. And then while it's still wet, we're going to press and lift
and that's going to leave a light value on the inside. And then we'll come in and
we'll outline it afterwards. So I just want, if you want to practice,
that might be a good idea. Otherwise we're
going to go for it. I'm going to add just a
touch more burnt umber and let me test that out again. That sometimes we do this with flower petals
too. I like that better. That has a little
more value to it. So I added a little more paint. Let's try it one more time. Please test this out before
you try it on your Cupid. I like that. Okay, here we go. So have your tissue handy. We're gonna do this in sections. Let's go ahead and
start with his sleeve. Go around the mustache. So we've got this sleeve in, maybe I'll add a little up here. Then before that dries, we're just going
to touch and lift. Matt leaves a nice little
shadow of what that value is. Let's do the other one. In the spring. I'll do a flower class
using this technique. It's really beautiful. Okay, Let's let that
sit for a moment. And then we're going to
just press and lift. Awesome. Let's come down to the
bottom edge of his gown. Middle, leave that little
shadow right there. I like it. I like the way it's darker
right underneath the beard, darker up in the crevices. Darker right where the
crease of his gown would be. That's just what
we're going for. Right now. Let's let that dry just a
little bit while it's drying. Let's go for our flesh color. We're going to pick
up just a little bit of Naples yellow. It doesn't take
much. I put out too much touching Naples yellow. And the tiniest amount of red. I'm going to start
over here so I don't add too much to the whole thing. You can see it does
not take much. Again, let's use our paper
to see color we like. We are going to come
back in and add some red to it to give him
a little rosy nose. But I do like that color, so I'm going to use that color. And I'm gonna base in his nose. Now if you want deeper skin, you can use some of
that burnt umber. Or you could even add
a little bit of blue, but we didn't pull blew
out on our palette today. Great. Now that are gown is dry. We're going to take
some burnt umber. I don't have my burnt
umber watered down much. It still might take two coats. All right, while the
feet are drying, our flesh should be dry. Let's go ahead and make
it a little more rosy. So coming back to
our Naples yellow, picking up a little
bit of the bright red. We're just going to build up
a little bit of rosie *****. Now what I'm gonna do is take just a water brush and blend. You can see how the water
just works, its magic. All right, and now we're going to do the
same thing for the hands. Now let's do the same thing using the burnt
umber on his gown, testing it out there. I just want to emphasize
some of the shadow areas. I'm just lightly adding
a little bit more. And this is totally up to you. You determine how much
shading you want. And you can either
water it down like we did before with the hands or
you can touch it a little. It just adds a little
depth and dimension. Now this is water on my brush. Just going to soften it, touch. Yeah, I like that
compared to that. Okay. So now I'm going
to pick up a little bit more and come over on this side. The last place I want to do
is down here around his feet. While that's drying,
let's just put a little bit on his mustache. Almost the same technique. Well, does the same
technique that we used on his clothing or we're going to wash that in and kind of tap it off so it just kinda
stains it a little bit. We're going to come in
with white afterwards. Right? Okay. We'll come
in with some white and do the detailing
their afterward.
6. Cupid Beard & Shading: Alright, I'm going to switch to a fine line, a script brush. This is a number one. And coming back to a
real watered down, umber, very watered down. And my test paper, I just wanted to
see how that looks. Even that's a little bit dark. I'm going to add
more water better. Well, I'm going to
add just a little bit of shaving a touch more
just here and there. Mr. tiny emphasis
we're actually going to do a little bit of
outlining in a minute. Now, we're going to
start laying in some of this beard using
this script again, we're going to do
some contour lines, which means we're going
to do curved lines. We're going to follow
the contour of his beard using very thin lines. Keep your paper handy. We don't want them super dark. We're just going to
build layer upon layer. Okay, sticking with
our burnt umber now, we're going to add
just a little bit of one toying to the mustache. And I'm going to add just a touch of shading
around the nose. That tiny area. If you have a, some
of you might have the hat right down on
the nose, that's fine. Like I do a good place to put
some other number in there. Let's just give a
light outline to the entire hat. Wonderful. Let's let that dry. We're going to take
some of us than down umber and outline his clothing. I'm going to do
just a little bit underneath the mustache.
7. Cupid Painted Details: Well, we have our
burnt umber out. Let's put in the bow. We're going to do burnt umber
with some gold highlights. So let's let that dry a little
bit and pull out our white back and take a look and see if that's the
coverage you need. Looks like I need a couple
of right over there. Oh, I hope you're having fun. This is the fun part to do all these details and to see
it start to come to life. I just love it. Now we're going to take care
of our mustache and beard. I'm just thinning
the white gouache down a little bit more. Let me show you the consistency. So I can do a nice thin line. We're going to emphasize
the white in the center of the beard to make it look like it's puffed
out a little bit. So it's kinda highlighted area. And we're just going
to slowly build that up by doing a lot of
little thin lines. What does it mean
that we don't want any white on the
edges because we do has a white beard and the Brown gives
depth and dimension. But we don't want
to cover the pink, we don't want to
cover all the brown. Want to find that nice balance. And then we're going
to come back in this center area and just
add some nice crisp white. I'm going to let that
dry and see how I feel about it while that's drying, let's do our moustache. It's gonna start by
outlining so that I make sure I stay
where I want it to be. Just wants I don't
know if you can see those little wisps
of hair right there. That's what I want on
this side as well. I'm going to turn
it and just kinda pull some of those
hairs up and touch. So cute. Let's let that dry for a minute and step
back and take a look. Let's go ahead and add his arrow in using our burnt
umber some more. And then we can go ahead
and bring out some of the what they call feathers. We're going to add
some gold to these. We're going to bring them up. Now for the strings on this bot, you could do gold
or red or brown. I am going to do brown and gold. So I'm gonna go ahead
and use this one. Just a very fine line, probably two ampere into gold. Then I'm going to
pick up some gold. This is the same goal
that I used on his wings. Okay. We're going to
let that part dry. So while that's drying, let's turn it upside
down and we're going to outline just lightly the wings, just to give them a
little more distinction. So we'll just go ahead
and follow the outline. Just like that. Guy is the best way
to do that kind of lining is to just go for it. If you go too slow, you tend to start getting a
little bit shaky. So just kinda hold your breath. Just go, just go. Oh. Now if you want to do the
little loop de loop that I showed you
on the pattern. That's pretty cute. I like that. I don't know if you notice
the angle of my brush, but the best way to do
those loop D loses. Try to keep it almost straight up and down
so that you can plant your little finger
to help steady you. And that will help
you immensely. Alright, let's go ahead and
add in our strings of gold. If that's what you're doing, that's what I'm gonna do. You could also use a gold
gel pen if you want to. The unit ball. Gold gel pen is really great. We are almost done and
he's looking so cute. What I do want to do is add a little more depth right
underneath that mustache. And I don't want
to just shaded in. I want to make it look
like little hairs. I'm picking up white. Oh, I like that better. Good. Alright. Let's let that dry
for just a moment. Alright, let's go ahead
and add our red hearts. Alright, we don't
want to overwork it. And our next heart is going
to be the tip of the arrow. Awesome. And then I just want to
put a little red band, whoa, where the
strings attached. And also I wanted to add
a little round ball. One more thing I wanted
to do with the gold was if you have a highlight
on the outer edge of that. Alright, let's let
this dry completely. Especially be careful
with the red. We don't want that to smear. And we'll come back
with our white gel pen or Posca pen. The details.
8. Cupid Final Highlights: Isn't he darling? Oh my goodness guys. I hope you've been
having fun with this. I've had a blast, is time to put the
final highlights on. And I'm going to be using this postcard white
pen. It's a fine tip. And you could also
use a gel pen. This is my favorite
white gel pen and I'm tested a lot of them. This is a signal. It's made by unit ball
and it is a medium tip, but it's really
wonderful as well. So use what you're
comfortable with. This Posca pen is almost
like painting with gouache. It just comes out so nice and solidly white that I
really enjoy using it. Let's step back
and see if there's any other places that you feel like you need some highlights. All right. I did realize that the last
thing that we need to do is add just a little bit
of sparkle to his beard. So I'm going to pick
up just a touch of this gold and stroke
in a few beard hairs. I'm not gonna put any
in this area at all. Wonderful. I hope you had as much fun
as I did with this piece. And of course, the last
thing that we always do it so important that you sign your work and be very proud of the work
that you do because it's unique and it's a
part of who you are. And thank you so much
