About This Class

Are you having trouble with your Sewing Machine? There are a number of issues Sewers might experience while using the Sewing Machine. Even though a Sewing Machine Manual will give you Troubleshooting tips, the most common problem won’t be covered there and it’s actually a very Simple Fix.

Any Sewer that hasn’t already come across this problem, will benefit from this knowledge. Once you experience this, it won’t stress you out again or make you believe you have to take it in for "Maintenance." Save yourself $100!

Sewing has been my passion for most of my life. After taking Fashion Design and learning Couture techniques, Teaching was the next best thing! I love to encourage people to find the joy I found in making clothes or Household items, and thereby finding the Zen moments when you're immersed in a project. It's a valuable Life Skill, even if it's just for hemming your jeans. Happy Sewing!

1. Hi : Hi there. My name's Marcie. Through all my years of teaching sewing, there is one issue that continues to occur and sometimes even after learning what the issue is, people will still have it happen and experience so much stress that they still believe that they have to take their sewing machine and have maintenance done on it, which can cost you $100-150 nowadays and is actually very unnecessary if this is the issue that's causing the trouble. Let me show you how to fix it and save you some money. And save you the stress of what happens when you experience it. If you're a beginner, it's going to probably happen eventually. So if you learn it now, then it will save you money and save you stress later on. So let's get right to it. 2. Projects: And I think that the best project after doing this video would be to make yourself experience what it's like when you loosen the tension and you make the big loops happen and you hear the noise, and you get familiar with it so that it doesn't stress you out when it happens. I really like to see that and I like to hear what you felt about when it happened. And if you feel confident next time that you will not be bothered by this soap it will be a muscle memory experience for you. Where it gets into your brain, sinks into your brain so that you don't freak out when it happens. Make yourself experience this and tell me all about it. 3. Good Stitches: I would like to note that the upper thread is pink and that the bobbin is chartreuse green color, yellowish green. I will now show you when we sew the fabric, which is white, where each of those threads will appear. I'm now going to show you what the stitches look like when the tensions are working well, the upper and the bottom are in sync. This is the upper tension, which is showing no loops on the bottom. And the bottom tension showing no large loops on the top. Now I'm going to show you what it's like when it's going to make you crazy. 4. Loosen Tension: Even. Generally speaking, a normal tension on a machine is about three, in order to get loops to happen on the bottom so that you know the whole process and how it affects you and how it feels, we're going to lower the tension to about a one. I tried before at maybe a two and it didn't quite work. I'm going to go all the way down to a one. That's where we're surely going to get the issue to arise for us to practice. All right. Let's strike this time. Oh, I hear it. Oh, something's wrong. Let's see. Oh, my goodness. You see that? Look at this. Something major's wrong with the sewing machine. But you know what I did? I just loosened the tension. So when that happens, now we're gonna tighten the tension back up and watch it go back to normal. See how crazy that looks? It's very stressful. Quite stressful when you get it to look like that, and you have no idea what it is, and you think, I have to take it in for them to fix it. Now, let me show you one more thing that can happen. Seems that everything's okay, right? Then there's a little surprise. Now, this time, and we didn't hear that really stressful sound that you might hear with some machines, but you may continue sewing thinking everything's okay, only to discover that on the bottom, now have large loops indicating that the upper threads tension was too loose. 5. Clean up Threads: Is there we busy. Before I go to fix it, what I will do is I'm just going to double check under the bottom to make sure that some of those loops didn't get caught in the bottom and cause any thread to get stuck in there. Just remember, remove the needle for safety so you don't poke yourself. Just loosen it till the needle comes out and and then slide it down. By the way, needles only go in to each machine the way that they're made. The flat flat part on the back will only fit in one way. You can't put the needle into your machine the wrong way. It just won't fit, it doesn't have to be super tight. When it goes back in. Don't crank it so that you can't get it off. Just a little note. Press your feet, come off, remove them. Then you can open the bottom with the little screws, the screwdriver taking off the plate and making sure there's no thread under there. If there was a piece that was having a hard time coming out, you would hold the thread, pull on it, and then turn the hand wheel back and forth up and down until it comes out. You'll be able to pull it out just like that. So I had a few little pieces in here that got stuck and broken off when I made the big loops. It's not a really big deal. They came out quite well. And then I will retry the sewing to see that the loops are gone. It won't be swing. 6. Reset Tension: I've returned the tension to a three and I'm just going to test it to make sure that the upper and the lower threads are connecting as they should. Looks good on the top. Looks good on the bottom. Actually, it might be a little bit too tight. I'm gonna check. We'll do it right. We'll do it right beside it. This side. See if it's better this time. I'm gonna try it again. Might have to fiddle with it sometimes. Never know when you play around with the tension. I got loosened again. I don't know why that was. Try it again. Three looks a lot better. This one here instead of these two. And on the back, it looks much more even. You don't see as much pink on there now, which means that this was a little bit too tight or something wasn't quite right yet, you know? Looks better. And you don't know until you when you don't have moments pass how you look like my dog class. 7. Are you relieved?: Well, I hope that was fun. I think it's always really fun when you can learn something that will prevent you having stress later on. Especially if you're beginning to learn how to sew, there's a lot of stuff that you need to learn. You'll be able to say, Oh, I know that. It's a breeze. Then if someone you know goes through that, too, you'll be able to say the same thing. Like, Oh, don't worry about that. You're saving them money, I might take you out for lunch or something. I think it's great to share because it's always fun to learn something ahead of having an issue about it. If it happens now, you won't be worried, you won't be stressed out. Hopefully, it can be shocking just the sound of it. Also if you're really eager to sew, you're into it and then it's a drag that it happens, you have to stop and one good thing about the fact that they are large loops that you will be able to actually cut them away so easily. And then the threads will come away pretty quickly. So that's another little banfit. Alright, so happy sewing, as I always say, and look for some more of my videos and also for my videos being improved. Happy sewing. Bye for now. And you don't know what you've got until it's gone.
