- Remember your values and make choices that align with them
- Stay focused and motivated
- Believe in yourself
- Get excited about your future
If you’re ready to start achieving your professional and personal goals, manifesting dreams and living your best life, it’s time to get crafty and make a vision board.
To help you get inspired, we’ll share a few vision board ideas and tips on how to get the most out of yours. Let’s dive in!
Vision Board Themes and Ideas
Your vision board should represent the vision you have for your future. If you’re not quite sure what to put on it, think about all the different areas of your life and how you’d like to improve them. These can be:
Your Career
What is your dream job? Is there a company or specific person you’d like to work with? What are some things you can do in order to reach your career goals and grow professionally?
Your Finances
Get specific about how much money you’d like to be making. You can put this figure right on your vision board or represent it with specific purchases you’d like to be able to afford. For example, don’t hesitate to include a picture of your dream house or car.
Your Health and Wellness
What are some habits you’d like to implement to improve your physical and mental health? Fill your vision board with images that will inspire and motivate you to keep up with these habits.
Your Personal Growth
Think about the kind of person you’d like to be and the words you’d use to describe them. Include these on your vision board, along with positive affirmations that will help you become the best version of yourself.
Your Relationships
What are some things you can do to deepen your relationships or maybe bring new ones into your life? Include images that represent your relationships with family, friends or a significant other.
Your Activities
Is there a hobby you’ve been wanting to take up or a recreational activity you’ve been thinking of trying? Maybe there are things you’ve had on your bucket list for a while or travel destinations you’ve been dreaming of visiting. Put these on your vision board to remind yourself to make them happen!
If you have lots of goals and wishes in one specific area of your life, feel free to dedicate an entire vision board to it. There’s no limit to how many vision boards you can make, as long as you have easy access to them and review them regularly. Otherwise, you can make a single vision board and loosely divide it into sections, each representing a different domain.
How to Create an Effective Vision Board
Before you get to actually making your vision board, there are four important steps you need to take. Don’t skip these, as they are the key to making your vision board work.
Step 1: Journal
Vision boards work best when they align with who you are and what you truly want out of life. This isn’t always clear—our thoughts are often influenced by the people in our lives and what we see on social media. To get to the truth, spend some time journaling and getting to know yourself. What does your ideal life look like? What would truly make you happy?
Step 2: Evaluate Your Life
Consider the different domains of your life (the eight dimensions of well-being is a great framework you can use). What are some areas where your current life is different from the ideal life you journaled about in Step 1?
Step 3: Set Goals
For each domain, make a list of things you can do to bridge the gap between your current life and the life you want. Turn this list into a set of actionable goals that will help you get there.
Don’t overwhelm yourself and list every goal you ever plan on achieving. Instead, choose a few of the most important goals in every domain. It can also be helpful to set a timeframe. For example, you can focus on only the things you’d like to accomplish in the next year.
Step 4: Find Visuals
Take time to find compelling images that represent your goals. When you look at each of the images you’ve chosen, you should feel the same way you expect to feel when you achieve that goal. This is what will give your vision board the power to change your life.
Types of Vision Boards
When it comes to putting it all together, you have two options: you can make a physical vision board or a digital one.
Physical Vision Boards
If you like working with your hands and enjoy arts and crafts, you’ll love making a physical vision board. Simply print your inspirational images and glue them onto a poster board or pin them to a corkboard.
When finished, place your vision board in a prominent place so you can see it daily. This can be a wall above your desk, the back of the door to your bedroom or even right next to your bathroom mirror.
Digital Vision Boards
If you prefer working on a computer or iPad, there are plenty of tools that will help you create a digital vision board. For example, you can use design software like Canva or an app like Procreate. Export the final image and set it as your wallpaper to make sure you see it on a regular basis.
If you use a productivity tool like Notion or Milanote, you can create an online vision board there and keep everything related to goal setting in the same place. They both have vision board templates you can browse to get started.
Your digital vision board can even be as simple as a secret Pinterest board.
The benefit of creating a digital vision board is that it’s dynamic. You can update it as you accomplish your goals and set new ones.
