Retelling Roadmap

Section 1: the Beginning

Dr Frankenstein is haunted by obsessive  ideas about creation and revitalization. He has created the Monster. Although it was his life’s mission to assimilate a matter of life after death, he was disturbingly disgusted with the Monster from the very first breath. It’s wide eyed stare. The way It’s touch chilled his bones to the very core. How slow and lumbering It was. He loathed the beast.

Section 2: the Middle

The Monster was amazed at the slightest intentions of human life. He watched silently at first until he began one day to find his lips twitching and small shrieks escaping his throat. The noise was loud at first and he  scared even himself. It seemed as though a very long time passed that he could only babble loudly. But one day he began to utter his masters name with his trembling lips.

At first the world and all its colors held the beasts wonderment. But those days had long gone. He had learned to speak and do many things and yet he found that man would never be a companion to him.

His ruler was a wicked man and beat him often for his shortcomings. He thought often of his demise more as time came to pass.

Unsatisfied with the world and the way it treated him he began to rebel.  It was small things at first, Ofcorse but eventually his temper became his identity as he was consumed with rage.

He had decided to kill his master but in a last moment of thought he asked for the one thing he never had: love. He begged his master to create a female counterpart to journey the rough tundras with.  As soon as he received his love, man could go to hell for all he cared. He’d decided he was done with man.

And so it came to be that his old, flawed master granted him this.

The once again mad scientist took to his work and created what was to be the perfect bride. Not only would the creature have love after all but he would have understanding. He would have a familiar with which to live out the rest of his  depraved days — however long that may be, we don’t know — maybe forever.

Like the immoral being he’d created once before he did once again. But just as Victor pulled the switch and electricity began to animate her cold dead corpse he realized something. He jolted his hand from the lever like electricity zapped him too.   With terror in his eyes he backed away in disgust. The once brilliant scientist howled and wondered if he mistakenly created a race of inhuman beings. For what would happen when they consummated their love. Would they have a litter of beasts roaming the world?

Victor was a creator of evil and he decided to put a stop to it once and for all as the bride took her first breaths.

Section 3: the End

The bride comes to life. She is different from the beast. Perhaps her parts were not long gone like him.

She has an understanding she’s in a lab but she does not know the strange creatures around her.  Standing just above her is a sweaty, scowling man who moves around the room quickly. In the corner is strangeness the likes of which she’d never seen.  It was large compared to the man. It grunted and  fidgeted in the corner, looking at her with eyes that blazed in hunger. Her new heart quickened with fear as she realized the monster was intended for her.

She did not know why she was brought to life in this place. She was terrified. She was wrapped in cloth but the monster had torn them away. Even though the doctor had rejected her, he’d given her clothes. She dressed her foreign mutated body.

Who was she. Why was she here. What would she do? She stared fear in the face and knew she had to make a choice.

The bride decided to run and in that moment she’d be known as the bride no more; for there was never to be a wedding.

Her wobbly legs took her away as it was clear the mad doctor wanted nothing to do with her. He had began humming peculiar tunes to himself in an unkempt way.

The abomination lumbered after her but his size held him back.  It was busy fighting off the insane leech in the white coat.  While their battle raged on furniture toppled and fire spilled into the lab consuming everything in its path.

As she ran she pondered her “intended role” in this world. She was disgusted the monster would assume she’d love him. She didn’t know who she was; she was many people. So she decided this meant she’d design her own self.

Why did the monster think she was some sort of concept that would save him so badly? She was looking for her own peace of mind and did not want to be assigned his.

As she traveled the lands she found herself more and more.

She’d adapted the name Solveig. Her dark eyes and long raven hair complimented her newfound confidence.

As she bound into the brave new world she smiled as she knew deep in her heart she’d never need man again.

The End

afterthought:
~ I’ll be honest. I’m here mainly to learn more about digital art in Procreate. I was gifted my first iPad 4 months ago. I am really enjoying the outcome of some of these projects.

When I read this class discussion I immediately knew I had to use the bride // the monster // the creator.

As I preceded through the class I could see the teacher was very passionate about this as well so I got excited about our shared enthusiasm.

I sat down with candle light at my kitchen table and placed myself in that lab and this is what I created.

I hope you enjoy.

Niki

PS) I also painted a digital scene on Procreate using classic imagery from the story.
I did this first and in the few hours it took me I carefully crafted what would be the brides story.
I wanted the scenery to be familiar as I knew the story would not be.
Welcome to my lab.
