Another great project, Justin, well done! I love the alternative approach you took when creating letterforms out of the strokes within the shapes! It looks fantastic as a complete alphabet! How does it work when you try to write something with these letters? Would be awesome to see some examples of using this typeface;) Also, have you tried to follow the technique I show in this class in a more straight-forward manner?:) I'd love to see how you can develop a scratch-inspired typeface where the glyphs' anatomy is based on the custom grid. Hello Evgeniya! Thank you so much for commenting on my project(s) — it's great to see that the teachers on SS stay involved in their projects.   

I tried the approach taught, but I had two recurring problems: First, I kept arriving at variations that felt too similar to your product. The second problem continues to be grid issues. Actually, the second problem is many problems which all seem to stem from grid issue: too many lines, or too much symmetry (vertical and horizontal), or an unwillingness to sufficiently break the grid.

I've uploaded a screenshot of the grid I'm working with now. Have I set myself up for bad outcomes?

Hey Justin, I think this starting point is completely valid, and you are definitely not setting yourself up for bad outcomes. I see these glyphs you've shared as a sort of wireframe with transparent facets/planes of structures which could potentially look 3d in the end, if coloured correctly. Remember that the grid is just a starting point, and you can add additional guides if necessary and only use as many or as little of them as you want — that's all in your hands, and that's the answer to your question about too many lines and unwillingness to break the grid, just do it;) You can also adjust the glyphs afterwards, and add/remove/extend their elements to develop them further or if you need to tweak something. It's an experimental process, and you might not get it prefect the first time around. But I personally really like what you've got there so far and can imagine it working fantastically (when coloured) in a large size, for example in posters. It also has an origami feel to it, the same as one of my typeface iterations, but it is also quite different! So don't give up and keep on working, and you'll get there for sure. Would be awesome if you could share your grid as it is and the picture it is based upon — maybe I'll have more feedback in regards to the grid itself. So please share your process (and don't delete any previously uploaded images, so it all stays there for reference), and let's work through this together:)

The low-poly/volumetric quality of it is kind of nice. I will in-fact now set it aside, take a deep breath, and come at it with fresh eyes on Thursday...

ps. hah! I should have used the turtle shell for my grid. Unfortunately, I trashed the image layer in Affinity. I think this was my 6th grid iteration. trying to remember the image...

I think this is coming together now. It hues too close to the typeface demonstrated than I am comfortable with were it a client piece, but what can you do.
The letterforms that convey volume with fewer lines are the preferred direction (N, A, V, O). I'm putting this aside for a day or two to look at it with fresh eyes later in the week.
