Good start Jay.  The paints and paper are fighting against you.  If you used artist grade paint on that paper or the cottman paints on cotton paper you would see a difference in how the pigments sit on the paper or the paint saturation.  All that being said, working with what you have.  Take a look at my website where I explain value and tone, your painting sits around a value of 5 across the board.  If you were to add darker shadows, make the eye darker, the section under the wing darker, shadows darker and then put a spot of white on the eye you now have a much fuller value range and that alone will make your painting jump off the page.  This is easier with artist grade materials but all of these things can be done on your existing painting too.  Here is a link about value and tone as well as one about pigments by value which shows you what colours have what values (darks and lights) <a href="https://paulcheney.ca/value-and-tone/" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">paulcheney.ca/value-and-tone/</a> <a href="https://paulcheney.ca/pigments-by-value/" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">paulcheney.ca/pigments-by-value/</a>

Appreciate the feedback. I got the strathmore to try b/c it was on sale at Blick for like 25 cents a sheet. But it’s not 100% cotton and bad. But i had done the sketch on it so i could take the class later and then realized later. Really appreciate your thoughtful feedback :)

I used winsor newton cotman. Not sure the paper think it was cellulose strathmore - not the best. Also cheated a bit and used other techniques. Any suggestion for how i can improve?
