Finding My (Ink) Lines

Finding My (Ink) Lines - student project

One of my big take aways from this class was different materials and approaches for different styles of art - I started my art journey with watercolours, then studied drawing to learn the artistic fundamentals, and now I playing with fountain pens to help me develop my understanding of different types of lines and styles - soon I’ll be moving back to watercolour and gouache (I’ve just discovered black watercolour paper and am itching to try it) and different types of graphite pencils.

My main goal was to explore different types of line making - the scribble map has become one of my warm-up exercises before I start drawing, and I applied this class to a picture of a bat I was working on.

The first rendition - that could have gone better. I was using a slightly softer pencil than I was used to (which fell apart during the drawing, as pencils are sometimes wont to do), and it didn’t communicate the focused elegance I wanted. Its a perfectly good observational drawing, but it doesn't 'feel' like anything.

I switched from using pencil to fountain and brush pens, and from lots of small lines to big, focused, movement lines to communicate the dimensions of the subject and the sense that it was moving across the page.

Still not perfect, but it’s a movement towards a style - I’ve realized that I like a limited pallet, with strong silhouettes and lines-work (like white gouache in black paper, perhaps - I’ll update this project if that works out better) and I’m looking forward to exploring this realizations more in watercolour, ink and drawing.
