1. Intro - Watercolor brush : Hi, I'm Krista. I'm a graphic designer based in Belgium, a small country in Europe. In this Skillshare class, you will learn how to create a watercolor brush in Adobe Photoshop. First, we are going to paint an abstract texture on a piece of paper. And then we will import it into Adobe Photoshop. And here we will transform that texture into a brush. Now, this class is for complete beginners. So if you've never used Adobe Photoshop before, don't worry, I will explain every step we take. And at the end of this class, you will be able to create this brush lost this cool looking bedroom. Hope to see you in the next video. 2. Create a watercolor texture on a piece of paper: Welcome. In this first lesson, we're going to create a watercolor brush texture on a piece of paper. You will need two balls, one for water and one for paint. You will also need a brush and a piece of paper. Now to avoid any scum place something between the paper and the disk. Let's get started. Even notice I'm using one single color, dark pink. That is because I don't have a red color, but this one works also great. So this color allows us to edit the brush more easily in Photoshop. I will explain more in a later class. They could have brush and socket in the acrylic paint a little and start painting something abstract, something similar to mine. Now, use some water and make the color lighter on some parts of the texture. After you are happy with the result, you need to import that texture into Photoshop. There are two methods to do that. The first method is to use a scanner, and the second method is to take a picture. If you use a scanner, you must wait until the texture is completely dry. Keep in mind the quality as well. The quality of a scanner is sometimes lower than that of a professional camera or even a smartphone camera. If you use a camera, then makes sure we have enough light. Not it's up to you which method you prefer. But in this class, I'm going to use a smartphone camera. Once we have taken the picture, transfer it to your computer. I'm using Google Drive to send files from my iPhone to my Windows PC. And because this class is for complete beginners, I will show you how I do it. So I'm using my thumb, my iPhone, go to photos that bond the share icon and search for the three dots. I can then find Google Drive. If you want to stay organized. Then renamed the picture and tap on Upload. Now let's make sure the image has been transferred to Google Drive. And hip. There it is. All right, it's time to open your Photoshop. And also don't want the image from Google Drive. If you want to use my image, then click the link I left in the project section. After you download the image, then click and drag the image into Photoshop. And that's it for this lesson. See you in the next one. 3. Select the texture + Convert it into a Photoshop brush: So far, we have created the watercolor texture. We have also important the image into Photoshop. And now we will convert the image into an actual brush. Let's get started. First, we are going to crop this image because we only need the pink area. That is a toolbar in Photoshop. And here is the crop tool. After we click it, we get this border around the picture. So we need to click and drag down towards the texture. And this will delete the outside part of the image. Now, do the same with the bottom, right and left side of the image. After I've done this, press Enter on your keyboard or go and click on this icon. Now let's zoom on the image, go to View and click on fit on screen, then select the move tool. So I've already named this layer. I will call it original brush texture. And now I will duplicate it. To do that, click and drag it to this tiny square icon. Now we have two identical layers. Let's hide the layer below by clicking on this icon. The next step is to make this layer black and white. There are a few ways to achieve this, but we're going to use adjustments layers. Adjustment layers are very easy to use and that also non-destructive as well. Click on this icon and then click on black and white. So you just create an adjustment layer. Great. So do you remember when I told you that I've used the dark pink color because it is easier to work in Photoshop. Let me explain why. In this adjustment panel, there are five different sliders, each with a different color. If I direct a red slider to the left, my texture will become darker, but the rest of the image will stay the same. This happens because the red slide that is able to detect every single red pixel from my image. So next time when you paint on a piece of paper instead of black, use one of these colors. Now because of that, I can choose how soft my brush can be. But for this time, I will use a value of minus 73. Then go and select the below layer. To do that, press Control on Windows or Command on Mac. Then click on the Copy layer and now go to Layer and click on Merge layers. Now, we will create a selection around this texture because there is enough contrast between the texture and the background. They can use photoshops, AI tools to make the selection for us. But if you have an older version of Photoshop, then you can use the magic Events tool or wait until I show you another way to create the same brush. Alright, go to Object Selection Tool and then click and drag to create a square. After that, Photoshop will take care of the rest. And voila, Photoshop has selected the texture. Now, go to edit and click on Define Brush Preset. Here you can name the brush and then click Okay. And congratulations, you've just created a watercolor brush in Photoshop. So easy isn't volume. Let's check the brush and see how it looks. But first, we need to deselect the active selection. Otherwise, we can do certain tasks. If, if it stays selected, go to Select and click on the Select. Hi, this layer and go to the squared icon. This will create a new empty layer. Now go to edit and click on field. Then click on contents and choose color. And then choose white and click on, Okay, on both panels. We have created this new layer where we will try our brush for the first time, click once, and that's the brush we just created. It looks quite impressive actually. Let's see how it looks in a smaller size. To undo, go to Edit and click undo brush tool. Here you can change the brush size and that's how it looks smaller. Now, the method you have learned in this lesson is not the most ideal one. In this case, we were able to select the texture easily bought some textures have more details and are harder to select. So in the next lesson, you will learn another method to create a selection and to make a brush from it. See you later. 4. Use adjustments layers + Convert the texture into a brush: Welcome back. Let's start deleting the first second layers. If you haven't it's selected the first layer, select it and press Backspace on our keyboard. Then select the second layer and again press Backspace. Click on the empty square icon to activate this layer. Just as we did in the previous lesson, click on the adjustments icon, then click on black and white. I'm going to use a value of minus 80, but you can use whatever value you like. Once again, click the adjustments icon and now click on exposure. Slider, slider to the right. This will make the brightest part of the picture even brighter. It also means we are going to lose a lot of details. So be careful how much you use it. In my case, I have a type of paper that has a lot of texture. When I took this picture, there was insufficient lighting. So all the small dots you can see are the shadows cast by the texture of this paper. This can be solved in several ways, including manually, and that's what we are going to undo. Let's first increase the exposure even more. I think plus 228 is going to do the job. Now select a zoom tool and zoom in to see the details that we need to remove later. So this one here needs to be removed heat as well. Alright, now we're gonna select all three layers and merge them together. Click on the last layer, then press and hold shift, and click on the first layer. Navigate to Layer and click on Merge Layers. Select the brush tool. And here you can select a different brush if you want, or you can use the brush we created in the previous lesson. I will use the brush we created and I will paint on the canvas, but the color is black as you can see. So press Control Z to undo and change the color to white. If you click on this tiny switch R0, it will change from black to white. You can also press X on your keyboard to do the same thing. Now use the brush to paint on the sports where you see small artifacts. To see more clearly, we must invert the colors of the image. Press Control plus I on our keyboard. Now, let's select the zoom tool and zoom in. As you can see, the artifacts are now much easier to spot. We need to change the foreground color of our brush to black. Click on the switch icon or press X on our keyboard. Select the brush tool and start painting on the black area of the image. If you want to navigate, Foster used to handle to make things even easier, hold down the spacebar while clicking and dragging. Every time you need to navigate. And to rotate your brush, press and hold shift plus left or right arrow key on your keyboard. This part will be sped up, so we don't waste time on a boring process. Once you are done, press Control plus I, to invert the colors. Again, I want to remove this port right here, so I will select a white color and paint it. This looks great. So go to Edit and click on, Define Brush Preset. Name it Brush, Tool, and click Okay. Create a new layer and fill it with black by pressing Control plus Backspace on our keyboard. Once you click on the canvas, you can see how our brush looks on a black background. Let's undo this and press Alt plus big space, which will filter background with white. Then press X to invert the color of the brush to black. Now we can see that this brush is a bit different from the brush we created in the previous lesson. Delete one of the layers and press Alt Backspace to fill the background with white. Create two new empty layer and rename them. Brush and brush tool. Select the brush tool and select the first brush we created. Then select the second layer, click once on the canvas to create a brush stamp. Then height the second layer, select the first layer and select the second brush we created in this lesson. Again, click once on the canvas to create a brush stamp. Now select the crop tool and make the canvas bigger by clicking and dragging to the left. Then press Enter. Select the background layer that says exposure to one and press Control plus T to get the free transform options of the layer. Then click and drag to the left while holding Shift. Now activate the second layer and then select the Move tool. Now click and drag the first layer to the left and press Control plus 0. Great. Now we can compare the two brushes. That's it for this lesson. See you in the next one. 5. Use the Brush settings panel to upgrade the brush: Welcome back. In this lesson, we will change the settings of our brush in order to create this nice-looking background. So select the first, second layer and then press backspace to delete it. Then select the brush tool and choose the first brush Ve created. Now click on this icon right here to open the brush settings panel. We will use some of these settings to upgrade our brush. But first, let's change the colors of the brush. Click onto black square icon and type in 00, D8 FF. Then click Okay. Now click on the switch arrow and then click on the white square icon. This time, type in 0096 FF. If you want, you can choose different colors as well. Click on Shape Dynamics, increase the Size Jitter to 16 per cent, then Angle Jitter to 11 per cent, and the roundness jitter to eight per cent. Now click on scattering and increase the scatter to 142 per cent, create a new empty layer. And let's try to brush, click and hold. And the brush will automatically change its position and angle. Okay, now undo everything by pressing Control plus Z and go back to settings. Click on Color dynamics, then activate the Apply Per Tip option and type in the foreground background jitter field four per cent. And for hue and Gita type in three per cent. Now click and hold. As you can see, we get different colors for our brush, which makes it feel like a real brush. If you have a graphic tablet that is going to work even better. Once again, press Control Z to undo everything. And now we're going to combine both brushes we created in this class. Click on Dual Brush and then select the second brush we have created. Now start painting on the canvas. You get a very nice combination of our brushes. Let me show you how it looks if you have a graphic tablet. So I'm starting to paint on the canvas. Only thing I selected for my graphic tablet is the opacity brush sensitive option. And in my opinion, the result is much better than a mouse. Look at how beautiful everything blends together. Now, I will undo everything and let's create a nice background by using a mouse. Go to Shape Dynamics and click on flip Y, Jitter. Now start painting on the canvas and voila, press Control plus 0 to zoom in. Now, let me show you one final trick. I will click and drag an image into Photoshop. You can download this image from the link in the projects and resources section on Skillshare. Now place the image more on the left and press Enter. Go to the Layers panel and place your cursor between the first second layer. Press and hold Alt on Windows or Option key on Mac and click once. This will create a clipping mask. And that's it. Congratulations for finishing this class. I am surely did a great job. Please upload your work and shared it with me and other creatives like you. And I hope to see you in a future class.
