Put ten people in front of me for a weekend and by Sunday afternoon they are painting, properly, and most of them are surprised by it. That is not because I am a magician. It is because almost everyone arrives carrying the same weight: the belief that every sheet has to turn into something. Put that down and the learning starts almost at once.

Watercolour has a reputation for being difficult and unforgiving, and I think that reputation is mostly earned by bad information. There is a great deal of received wisdom in this craft that nobody has checked in fifty years, and plenty of it is simply wrong. So I teach the way I wish someone had taught me: plainly, with the reasons attached, and with the honest answer even when it is the dull one. I will tell you when a technique is worth your time and when it is a party trick.

I paint with single-pigment colours, I have firm opinions about paper, and having wasted more money on materials than I care to admit, I will happily talk you out of a purchase you do not need.

Alongside my classes I have been building a free watercolour encyclopedia. A pigment index, guides to paint, paper and brushes, colour mixing, and a growing library of free reference photos with traceable outlines, for when you want to paint a subject more than once. Nothing behind a paywall, no account needed to read it.

A lot of people are intimidated by watercolour, that generally comes from a lack of understanding how it works.  I have spent the past decade not only learning how to paint with watercolour but also everything about it.  How it is made, what materials to use and why and so much more.  All of these things combined are what got me to where I am today.  In each of my classes I incorporate those lessons for you so that you do not have to go down the same bumpy road I did. 

When I am not painting I can be found adventuring around our beautiful planet.  I recently returned from a solo sailing trip in the Pacific North West, it was the adventure of a lifetime.
