Becky, this is such a beautiful piece! You did an amazing job retaining the value even without having exact colors. I will say the Brown Derby was an oversight on my part. I had no idea you couldn’t get (one of my dad’s tubes before he passed) so I will have to find something similar. I just think of it as a cool tone brown. Maybe Terri can give us some insight on what colors look similar, she has been researching what could replace that one. I LOVE the violet shadowing, brings a bit of interest to the overall painting. I just don’t know that there is anything I’d change, just so well done. Keep it up Becky!

Wow, thank you.  I see all kinds of "errors" I'll just say are "variations".

Again, it's amazing how minor changes make such an amazing difference.  I discovered the line I have above the nose to represent the ridge between his eyes was off a bit to the right.  I've since moved it by angling it to the left.  It made a huge difference.    

BTW, does your American Journey Brown Derby have pigment numbers listed?  Cheap Joe's is so wonderful to list not only their pigment colors, but the temperatures of their colors in their catalog and online!  I had used the Neutral Tint (which added the violet tone) in other areas of the painting, and added it to tie it all together.  I did tone it down a bit by adding a little wash of brown over it.  

My mom passed away several years ago and I was able to keep her watercolor brushes.  I've added to those, but use them and think of her, as I'm certain you do with your dad's watercolor.  That makes everything we paint with their materials more special.  Right?

As far as matching your colors, since I'm crazy enough to have over 100 tubes, AND insist on making mixing charts for them as a great guide, I can usually match most everything.  

I'd LOVE to get your opinion on a landscape piece I just did for a family member who lost their mom last week.  They wanted their childhood home painted, and I've done a couple others in the past, so I agreed to do it.  I noticed YOU do similar (and VERY BEAUTIFUL) renderings of people's homes.  I'd LOVE to get your input.  Is there any possible way to get that help affordably?

OH, what did you think of the way Potter's Pink performed?  It was the first time I used it, but knew it was a great granulating option.  Like you, I've spent quite a bit of time around pups.  Many have a unique coloration to their noses.  AND, you may not be able to see it, but I WAS able to get the salt technique to work AFTER buying a salt grinder with fresh salt.  I used both large and small salt on the nose for texture.  I may have found my humidity salt solution.  ;-)

I LOVE how you call errors (which I don’t believe in :)) variations. That’s such an encouraging statement to tell yourself. How wonderful! I think your color mixing is so spot on. I’m sure I could learn a few things from you! Wow. So knowledgeable. I am unsure of the pigment numbers. I will email you about that further and about trying to give you some feedback on the home illustration you are working on, that is super special. Yes I stay quite busy with homes illustrations as well as pets. The best of both worlds. It’s great to go between the two subjects. ^_^  And you are so incredibly kind about my work. Thank you.

And I DO see that texture! Love that you got around that humidity. So so happy for you! 

Potters Pink is amazing. I may have to pick that one up next. What a beautiful tone. Thank you for explaining so much, it really gives me insight into your process. And I get to know you a bit better. So sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. Yes they keep us going with their tools. Very special.

Though I didn't have the exact colors you used (American Journey does not carry Brown Derby anymore, and I was unable to locate pigment formula/# to replicate it. They say if you keep your values true, it doesn't matter what color you used, but I believe I used too violet a shadow color.&nbsp; Easy to fix! I used Daniel Smith Potter's Pink &amp; Lunar Black for the nose. I'm not saying this was an easy painting for me.&nbsp; I am picking up new skills, though, and am happy with the end result.&nbsp; Not ready for "prime time", and wouldn't ever take on an actual pet portrait, but I'm having fun learning!
